#FootBindingRetold "For generations, foot-binding was inflicted upon millions of Chinese women and girls in an effort to ensure their marriageability — a wife with bound feet was seen as a status symbol in Chinese society. Although the practice of foot-binding has been banned in China since the mid-twentieth century, there are still women today who remain living testaments to this cruel custom. Photographer Jo Farrell is on a quest to capture the everyday lives of these women, who are in their 80s and 90s. Contrary to the stereotypical image of foot-bound women as wealthy urbanites, the women Farrell photographs “are peasant farmers working off the land,” who have survived the turbulent social and political landscape of twentieth century China."
