Hello people of Tumblr…. M speaking, as mentioned in our earlier post, I am the Broiler Breeder Chicken Farmer Extraordinaire of the Laggies. Today I am going to enlighten you about the poultry industry and what it’s like being a woman in the industry. Let me start off by saying that I love chickens, they are smart and beautiful creatures and they are the most common bird in the world adding up to a grand total of 25 billion. This means that there are more chickens than people in the world, so we can conclude that they rule. (haha) Broiler breeder chicken farming means that I have male and female chickens in my barn and the females lay fertilized eggs. These eggs then go off to the hatchery and out hatch baby chicks. These chicks then grow up to become broiler chickens, which grow up and become the meat that people eat. The eggs that our farm produces actually grow up to be the chickens that supply McDonalds! I live on a beautiful farm with 30,000 birds. Every morning I get up with the sun, and go hang out with my chickens. I check their feed, water, temperature, do some cleaning, prepare for egg picking and much more. Then it’s time to collect, sort, and clean all the eggs. This is a very important part, since our eggs go to the hatchery, and the hatchery only accepts the best of the best quality. Collecting eggs is done two times a day in two hour periods. Once all the eggs have been collected, they are counted, the weights are taken and all the information is put into excel spread sheets and I make graphs. Then it is time to check feed and water again, do some cleaning and tuck my chickens in for the night. At first I found being a woman in the industry to be difficult, but as time goes on I think it is getting better because it’s becoming more common for woman to be farmers. What I found very difficult at first was that whenever the vet or the feed rep would come over they would only speak with my father and not with me. This is getting better now, I think because they are starting to realize my knowledge and passion for chickens and that I am doing the best I possibly can for the industry. In conclusion chicken farming is awesome and it is what I look forward to doing with the rest of my life! I hope you all enjoyed learning a little about chicken farming and if you would like to learn more about chicken farming or just some cool facts about chickens, I have attached some websites that you can check out. Sincerely, M.
