IPK Rewatch: EP 01; the fateful night

ah the first look! the first impressions and the first introductions. it's interesting how the first snapshot after introducing us to Lucknow is of the Guptas. While both the families belong from the same city, it's now after 14 years that Arnav is at the point to take what is rightfully his, that Khushi breaks past the gates of his shell.

I love that bua ji's, the fiercely protective guardian of the two girls later onwards entrusted with their responsibility when they are sent to Delhi with her is the one introducing us to whose day it'll be.

"arre khushi ka mawqa hai!"

one of my favourite things about ipkknd were the possibly double meaning of dialogues. of course, it's a blissful and happy day for the daughter of the house is about to get married but today also marks the day where Arnav think he's won from his past. He is unaware that Khushi or happiness will come knocking at his door in span of few hours. Khushi is unaware that the turmoil her recklessness will pull through will lead to her, and her sister's best decisions of life.

Khushi's introductory dialogues reveal that despite being nervous she doesn't shy away from doing whatever she thinks is 'right'. I've always maintained that Khushi's moral compass is driven from the understanding of morality but whether whatever decision she makes will make the person she's doing that particular action for or from happy or sad. Right now, the shop being mortgage is going to take all of Guptas' assets and savings away. It'll also endanger her sister's happiness if the demand for dowry doesn't stop. While Khushi is right, as we know Shashi assures her afterwards, her going behind everyone to fix the situation herself isn't. These actions establish a running theme with Khushi's character. She is the definition of chaos and regardless of her intentions, things do tend to explode a lot in her face.

Also Payal's character's demure and ever-pleasing nature is established from the get go. While Bua ji is singing for her outside, she is worried about Khushi and her father instead of enjoying. The stoic tendency to please others and care for others before observing her own happiness stands out however her ability to go along until someone else takes the first step also shows her status as the elder daughter, whose often lauded as the perfect daughter of the house taking play.

The first look of Khushi, we see her eyes.

The eyes have a big role to play with both Arnav and Khushi, and to see the clarity and courage in Khushi's eyes from the first instance is just a beautiful directorial decision.

I also love Khushi's face reveal just as she is justifying her actions and revealing the same to Devi Ma. This is Devi Mayyian's child. Her absolute favourite and the closet confidant before Payal for Khushi! Sanaya looked absolutely ethereal in the first episode. The lengha is beautiful, the subdued green with pink with gota all over suits Khushi. Her switching out her khussas for tennis shoes few seconds earlier showing the unconventionality she doesn't shy away from. My only qualm is the amount of bronzer they put on Sanaya's face. (cough cough *colorism*)

Again with Khushi's moral compass, she wouldn't have stolen the milk man bike along with milk crates on the side if she actually took decisions which she thought through. Milk symbolises fertility and abundance blessed from gods. Khushi running away with stolen milk is a good use of metaphors in direction with Khushi being the force of change for everyone around her. Today in particular with Payal and Arnav's life. Also, 20,000 rs is symbolise the how the universe is shifting for the Guptas at least in the beginning. 20 being the universal number of harmony, balance and blessings and adding 0s to it which symbolise a divine journey. Three zeros simplify the divine journey Khushi has set out on and taken others along with her. The journey starting with loss will one day end with the gains Guptas didn't ever dream about. These little details were what pulled me into the script the first time around and seeing it repeat reinforces for me at least that I am glad to have been on this journey of Khushi and Arnav's from day one. (I started watching around the teej episodes).

Shashi's red kurta, I think at one point Shyam and NK both wore this during A & K's marriage. The recycling of wardrobes.

Shashi and Garima's conversation reveal the compliance that comes with being a woman in society and is understood by perhaps Garima and Bua ji. Shashi on the other hand might give into the norms, is also someone who stands against the injustices practiced in name of tradition and I love him for it! I really wish we had seen him recover before the show ended. A conversation between him and Arnav would've been heartwarming to witness since they both seem to align on their moral perspective of the world to an extent.

I know they try to tell us Khushi is around early adult years like 18, I really thought she passed as someone who was 21 and 22 through mannerism and with the bday tracks, I'm using that age as cannon.

We finally have the entry of our rakhshas urf rajkummar

I love the shot of Khushi's motorcycle leaving the gates and stopping at the signal for the chopper to fly over and her being the only one to look up in the shot.

Ah ASR, Arnav Singh Raizada. He oozes arrogance, attitude, entitlement, purpose, and luxury. This is not an ordinary man and makes sure everyone around him remembers that. Of courses betiya didn't care about any. of it and that wasn't okay, at all!

With the first pap question we already know the this man has an established reputation of being hard to reach, of being mysterious, and making calculated decisions which leave others stumped in light of his age and experience. The second and third follow up are questions are just as enthralling. This is one of the most eligible bachelors and not many know much about his personal life. His mysteriously magnetic persona also begs answers to know why they're exceptions in him making a presence at events he is hosting in smaller cities of the country. All these questions and he answers nothing. Just calmly walks past. But we get hints. There's a past. A haunting one with a broken marriage, death, and a mother.

"Hum usoolon ke bare pakke hain!"

"Usooloon se somjhota nahi karte!"

ah chacha ji! where else do we go on to hear these lines from? Dadi ji. How ironic that a woman and her son taking pride in their ability to stick to rules, morals, traditions, are the ones at mercy of this man whose morals are deemed questionable throughout, who doesn't advertise morality, nor preach verse of tradition. These are also the people who wronged him and his sister as a kid. The Maliks left Arnav and Anjali at a place where they couldn't use their name without feeling disgraced. And now here, fourteen years later Arnav stands on the same grounds he was was told to leave from. I love the 630 above Arnav. The number signifying success. Apt! The white dove signifying the turmoil ending to some degree with the Arnav Malik rightfully taking what was his, a reign of peace.

In contrast Payal and Khushi once again having the conversation about what they're doing is right or not brings us to a contrast in decision making abilities. Arnav's move was calculated. He went over Chachaji's head to buy from the man the havali was mortgaged to. Khushi's move is driven through impulse of protecting her sister's happiness.

Khushi's words abut dil, zameer, paisa are hilarious because the man she loathes for the same reason is the one she is unable to hate. Oh how the tables turn!

I love Anjali's introduction. The first words are Arnav. The first interaction in the flashback of her's is with Arnav. The siblings are each others' first friends, first confidants, first people. Anjali wearing very thick visible sindoor after we just saw an ambiguous flash back of hers at her wedding is such a perfect example of Raizada's not being much different than the Maliks in their quest to bury the past and refuse to answer questions. Anjali wearing yellow in a see of red is such a perfect repression of what she means to Arnav. Yellow symbolises happiness, sunshine, brightness. Khushi later showing up in Green is also such a beautiful thing as green symbolises rebirth, revitalisation, and reincarnation of life. The two women are everything for this man.

We find out Arnav wanting to knock down Sheesh Mahal. Whether he does so or not, we don't find out.

(The ipk Redux was amazing at plot analyses and predicting tracks through easter eggs in the show. The complete truth of Garima, Arnav's dad, Khushi's parents, Chachaji, Dadi ji, and Shyam being tied to their past was changed according to those theories and ofc they are theories not canon. but these narrative shifts annoyed me a lot which is why I think IPK would've been good as a finite series. It wouldn't have to adjust its tracks in accordance to trps. Regardless of this theories being right or wrong, we can already observe with the omission of Chacha ji that there were changes made. Ah well.)

I loved that poet dude. The insinuation of taking to rights and two lefts, and Khushi being lost in the labyrinth that was Sheesh mahal is apt in terms of how Khushi found her life tangled with Arnav's past later onwards. I love how Khushi always ended up unintentionally walking towards Arnav since this day onwards. We see that when she ends up at Shantivan with saris. We see that when she ends up in front of him after Shyam the first time around.

and now for that fateful moment. The moment planned by the Gods. the moment where Khushi finds herself scared, her phone battery gone, she has no one and in a sea of people her eyes land at that one person. Interesting how she pulls up her dupatta just as that man stares her. Arnav's eyes when looking at Khushi find a way to admire her or in this case, he was straight up being disrespectful towards this strange girl. When she turns around to leave, she slips on the dupatta his staff had pinned on her and god, this man was taken aback by her. The first meeting derived anger from Arnav but also it pushed something he didn't hope to have to that extent. There is a pull between the two. He looks at her eyes, observes her trembling lips, and her hand, her hand clutches onto his collar which becomes a theme. The dupatta and Arnav's collar are two things that become so important in their ability to communicate their comfort to each other.

And so it begins. The love story. The kahani of nafrat, of refusing to be indifferent but trying so so hard to be.

Dear Diary,

I found out what it was like to be a woman when I was ten. My best friend’s mother owned her own beauty salon and on some days after school and summer camp, we’d grab lemon-yellow popsicles and crayons and head on over to the parlor to hang out while her mum worked. Lolling around on zebra-striped couches and watching the hot pink interior of the salon got too boring for us at certain points. We’d smash crayon heads into the couch, trying to drown out the monotony of black and white, throw our Popsicle sticks on the mean old manicurist who shot us death glares, or stared out the window watching the summer sky turn to dusk. Day-after-day, ladies would walk and talk about the same old things (weddings, kitty parties, soap operas, designers), smile plastered on smiles, and go on with their endless twittering. I couldn’t understand why nobody wanted to talk about Ninja Turtles and whether or not Michelangelo would’ve liked to know he’s got a cartoon character named after him. I couldn’t understand why those ladies didn’t go outside and play, or watch a movie, or read a book. Why would anyone waste three to four to five hours in one place just to make herself look pretty?

I found the answer in a salon chair. There was a rather large salon chair that would swivel around and make creaky noises as we played on it. I was too small for it. My best friend and I always felt too small and confused in that hot pink adult world, but that chair made us shrink even more. Our sneaker-clad feet couldn’t even reach the floor, the feet that did touch the floor wore sandals, khussas, chapals and stilettos. One day a bride came in to get dolled up. She wore a crisp cotton top and jeans, had a plethora of curly hair like an aura around her, a hooked nose and a book in her hand whose title was a word too big for me to understand. She smiled at me in my disheveled shorts and t-shirt, with my messy mop of hair squirming around in a chair that was too big for me. I watched as she got ready, fascinated by this lady unlike all the others, who walked in caked with makeup, that looked so normal. They took had her put on an opulent, gold spangled dress, did up her makeup, straightened her hair and pulled it back, hooked a nose-ring into her hooked nose, and then covered her head. They gave her stilettos to wear.

I looked down at my sneakers then, and I realized that they might someday grow into stilettos. I realized that when my feet reached the floor, they would be subject to pedicures and other things to hone them into a perpetual state of daintiness. They wouldn’t hold scars and burns and blisters from a life of running outside, but would be pale from being indoors, with indents of heel straps having dug into them….

It is nighttime and I am at a dhaba (outdoor cafe, found in South Asia). I am gazing at the men around me, shifting from one to another, particularly at their feet, at their neon green nike sneakers and burnt umber flip flops and I wonder how worn their soles are...They smoke and sip tea, their voices rumbling, the night air ruffling through black hair and swaying the creaking tables, the plastic chairs settled precariously over stones and uneven ground. The scent of tea lilts through the air, the waiters here hover over these men, casting us furtive glances as they pass us.

My friends and I have been here for the past hour. They are playing Parcheesi; the sound of rolling dice is followed by an issuing of protests after every three minutes. This is not the first time I have come here, but this is the first I have a book besides my cup of tea. It’s “Why Loiter?” by Shilpa Phadke. I have an assignment due this week and the one light bulb the dhaba has installed provides the light I need for the numerous annotations and post-its I’ve stuck through the pages. My friends have allowed me to study for the past half hour, but they have promised that if I don’t join them in the game soon, they will snatch my books and feed them to the wild dogs in the neighboring parking lot. I smile, highlighting a paragraph and scrawling in a note, thinking of books whizzing through the night air.

It occurs to me after a while that this is appropriate, that this fits into my on-going project of wandering through and loitering in public spaces. That though this dhaba is in a relatively privileged area of Karachi, we are accessing a public space and as women that means something. It means breaking the boundaries that our parents drew between us and the rest of the world. It means engaging in the risks of the city, traversing the cityscape in spite of the possibility of groping/ molestation/ rape. Mum and dad always spoke of the dangers of the night. I don’t feel fear, here. The whole thing feels so completely ordinary, it’s like this space is an extension of my own house, of my roof where we all hang out and smoke and play games through the night.

I ponder over whether or not this constitutes flânerie. I am observing all these boys, close to my age, lounge around. I think of the politics of loitering. There are many layers of privateness and publicness blurring together here. This is a make-shift café set up in an empty plot, private property that would not have been accessible to the lower-class males who work here. And my friends are here, girls who should not be at dhabas because of the threats they represent. Although, hanging out at dhabas has been normalized by the #Girlsatdhabas community, it is still seen as a male enclave, where women ordinarily are not allowed to go because it is seen as a space of ill-repute where drugs, alcohol and salacious behavior is imagined to accompany the tea. It all comes from this perception of public spaces as being threatening for women.

And I then I think of this book, and of the #Whyloiter #Girlsatdhabas campaigns. And how useful they have been, that they carved out this space for us, here, no matter how small it is. They have propagated a narrative of risk and fun instead of respectability, actively countering hegemonic discourses of respectability and fear surrounding women in public and specifically urban spaces.

I think of how they have said that “risk taking is often considered acceptable, even desirable masculine behaviour. For women, on the other hand, it is not only seen as unfeminine, but as potentially the behaviour of a ‘loose’ woman.” And I remember a male student at a debate at my university. How he argued that these spaces, dhabas, at night become places where women’s honor is at risk, that he had seen for himself the dishonorable things that have happened there. And then I remember that a friend had called him out on it, his insistence on preserving women’s respectability and then engaging in behaviors he would brand immoral if done by women.

I think of how by turning the safety argument on its head” they have argued for women to gain “access to public space as citizens” there is no need for a discourse of “greater surveillance or protectionism (however well meaning)” but is centered on “the right to take risks.” These narratives constitute a counter-public discourse, demonstrating the inter-connectivity of discursive and physical spaces. I have seen through these wanderings the gendered spatiality. that is born of the forms of spatial control placed on the female body that disallows the freedom of engaging with the landscape of the city.

And then I think of the bride and her stillettos, how we’re trained to be less mobile, slowly as we grow into women. How soccer games at parks, with our scraped knees and dirty clothes, become lunches at exclusive cafes. I think of how I am made to sit in that same salon chair now and be made up for hours before prom, or a wedding, or a party. How this is expected feminine behavior. These are the rules. You have to get pretty and sit pretty.

And then I look around me, at my friends and their wild hair and make-up free faces, arguing over whose turn it is, and I am glad that we are breaking the rules, that we are defining and imagining womanhood on our own. And then I look down at my shoes, purple ballet flats worn from all the travelling. And I smile.

How is salat-ul janazah (funeral prayer) performed?

Accordding to Hanafi madhhab (sect), the funeral prayer is performed as follows:Funeral prayer is performed with niyyah (intention) and four takbeers (saying Allahuakbar). If the prayer is performed without niyyah or less than four takbeers, it will not be valid. In fact, niyyah is made in the heart; it is sunnah to utter it. It is stated in the niyyah whether the dead person is a man, woman or child. The imam utters the niyyah as, "I intend to perform funeral prayer and utter prayers for the dead person for the sake of Allah” and starts the prayer. There is no need for uttering the niyyah for being an imam. The congregation utters the intention similarly and adds the words, “I will follow the imam”. It is necessary to say only, “I will follow the imam”. The arkan (pillars) of the funeral prayer are qiyam (standing) and takbeers. There is no reciting from the Quran, ruku (bending down) and sajdah (prostration). The prayer is performed as follows: The takbeer of iftitah (beginning) is uttered and the right hand is placed over the left hand and fastened. The prayer of subhanaka is recited. While reciting subhanaka, after saying وَتَعالى جَدُّكَ "wa taala jadduk" (Your majesty is exalted), وَجَلَّ ثَناؤُكَ "Wa jalla thanauk" (Thy praise is glorified) is added. Then, the second takbeer is uttered without making a sign with the head or eyes and the prayers of “Allahumma salli wa barik”. Then, the third takbeer is uttered and a prayer is recited for the dead person and all Muslims. There is not a definite prayer here. The following prayer: "Allahumma`ghfirli wa li`l-mayyiti wa li-sairi`l-mu`minina wa`l-mu`minat...(O Allah! Forgive me, this dead person, and other believing women and men, …" or: رَبَّنَا اتِنَا فِى الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِى اْلاخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّار بِرَحْمَتِكَ يَا اَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمينَ "Rabbana atina fi`d-dunya hasanatan wa fi`l-akhirati hasanatan wa qina adhaba`n-nar birahmatika ya arhama`r-rahimin (Our Lord! Give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter and save us from the torment of the fire We seek Thy blessings, Thou art the most Merciful)" can be recited. Or, some other prayers can be recited. Those who do not know those prayers can recite the Chapter al-Fatiha with the intention of prayer. It is sunnah to recite the following prayer: اَللّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِحَيِّنَا وَمَيِّتِنَا وَشَاهِدِنَا وَغَائِبِنَا وَذَكَرِنَا وَاُنْثَانَا وَصَغِيرنَا وَكَبِيرنَا اَللَّهُمَّ مَنْ اَحْيَيْتَهُ مِنَّا فَاَحْيهِ عَلَى اْلاِسْلاَمِ وَمَنْ تَوَفَّيْتَهُ مِنَّا فَتَوَفَّهُ عَلَى اْلايمَانِ وَخُصَّ هذَا الْمَيَّتَ بِالرَّوْحِ وَالرَّاحَةِ وَالْمَغْفِرَةِ وَالرِّضْوَانِ اَللّهُمَّ اِنْ كَ��نَ مُحْسِنًا فَزِدْ فِى اِحْسَانِه وَاِنْ كَانَ مُسيئًا فَتَجاوَزْ عَنْهُ وَلَقِّهِ اْلاَمْنَ وَالْبُشْرى وَالْكَرَامَةَ وَالزُّلْفى بِرَحْمَتِكَ يَا اَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمينَ "Allahumma`ghfir li-hayyina wa mayyitina wa shahidina wa ghaibina wa dhakarina wa unthana wa saghirina wa kabirina... Grant especially this dead person your ease, rest, forgiveness and consent O Allah, if he acted well, then increase for him his good action, and if he acted wrongly, then overlook his wrong actions. Grant him security, glad tidings, generosity and closeness to you. We seek Thy blessings, Thou art the most Merciful " (*). " If the dead person is a male child the following prayer is uttered after the sentence “wa man tawaffaytahu minna fa-tawaffahu ala`l-iman”: اَللّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ لَنَا فَرَطًا اَللّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ لَنَا اَجْرًا وَذُخْرًا اَللّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ لَنَا شَافِعًا وَمُشَفَّعًا Allahumma`j`alhu lana faratan, Allahumma`j`alhu lana ajran wa zuhra... Allahumma`j`alhu lana shafian mushaffaa... (Oh Allah! Cause him to become a means of salvation for us, and cause his loss to become a means of reward and recompense for us (in the Hereafter), and make him for us an intercessor whose intercession be granted by Thee. (*). Then, the fourth takbeer is uttered, the Imam and then the congregation turn their faces to the right and then to the left, saying “as-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah”. Since the prayer is completed after the fourth takbeer, the hands are released. The prayers other than the takbeers are read silently. It is not permissible to recite from the Quran in the funeral prayer. However, some verses can be read with the intention of prayer. A person who misses the takbeer of iftitah waits for the next takbeer and starts the prayer with it. He should complete the four takbeers before the janazah is removed from the musalla (prayer place). It is makrooh (abominable to perform the funeral prayer inside the mosque unless there is a necessity. If the weather is rainy and if there is not a suitable place, there is no drawback to performing the funeral prayer in the mosque. It is wajib to recite salam at the end of the funeral prayer. The prayers that are recited are sunnah. It is mandoob (recommended) to form three ranks during the funeral. The funeral prayer is performed only once before the dead body. It is makrooh to perform the funeral prayer again. It is better to perform one prayer each when there are several janazahs. It is permissible to perform one funeral prayer for all of them. It is said that it is hoped the dead person will attain the forgiveness of Allah if some holy words expressing that he was a believer when he died are written on the forehead, bandage or shroud of the dead person. However, it is possible that those words, for instance the word of tawheed, will stay in the grave and later be stepped on or they will get dirty due to the liquids that will flow from the dead body. Therefore, there are some drawbacks to writing them. It is deemed more suitable to write bismillah (in the name of Allah) on the forehead and la ilaha illallah (there is no god but Allah) on the chest of the dead body not in ink but with the index finger after the dead body is washed but before it is wrapped in shroud.
