If ever you doubt the value of a good lighting in an Actor headshot it is worth pulling out a variety of shots of the same Actor and examining the images they portray. Here are 4 of Gemma Arterton all of which present her (literally) in a different light.

In the first, by Wolf Marloh is a very clean well lit shot, Gemma appears fresh faced, hair back and in a plain black Tee. This image presents her as a blank canvas, a pretty woman with clean features, someone an agent can look at and project a possible character onto. This type of portrait is a simple 2 light set up against a white background with a reflector to reduce any shadow.

The second by Michael Wharley makes greater use of shadow, and is a less well groomed image, the background is more textured. I think the photographer has used side lighting to create this look, with a dark backdrop and flags to intensify the dark shadows, the Actor’s expression adds to the slightly ominous atmosphere of the shot. 

The third by Sandro Baebler looks like it is window lit. A soft diffused light comes in from the left, lighting the 3/4 face, and the shadow picks out the contours of her cheekbone and jaw, subtle use of a reflector reduces shadows, the image is very soft and natural and the natural freckles can be seen.

The Final shot by David Slijper is a classic Rembrant or 3/4 shot and the Actor is made up and dressed very High end...strong make up, diamond jewellery  (the shoot was for Vanity Fair) this along with the dramatic lighting heightens the glamour of the image and stylistically it looks like a Richard Avedon shot from the 50s.
