Library Scavenger Hunt

At first, I was genuinely stressed out about this whole library scavenger hunt. When I think about the word “library” a sense of ancient, confusing, and just out of date information is what first pops into my head. After all, its not like any of my other college classes incorporated the library within their curriculum. However, after building my research with the cooperation and assistance with Kutztown’s library and staff, my thoughts are entirely revised. 

The Library Works!

When going about the challenges on the scavenger hunt, I decided to first and foremost complete the 30 word key words about my topic. The reasons in which I decided to brainstorm keywords pertaining to the van life, was because it served as a spark plug towards my research direction. By being able to throw topic ideas on paper, it allowed me to gain insight on what future blog posts I will most likely be developing on. 

The second challenge that I decided to take on, was to check out a “physical book” at the library representing Chris McCandless’ journey called “Into the Wild.” At first, I typed “Into the Wild” in “books and media” and to my surprise my book was available! So after that, I simply walked to the nearest librarian, asked a general direction to find the book, and in the Library’s main collection in section C is where I was able to locate my book siting on the second shelf. I didn’t realize how easy this process was, and I was hesitant on doing this challenge because I thought you needed to “register” for a library card but here its just a simple swipe of your Kutztown's card! 

The last challenge that I decided to complete was utilizing “WorldCat” to find a very custom/specific book of my choosing.This book was about “A Guide to Van Life” and the tips and tricks related to the van life lifestyle. At first, I didn't even realize “WoldCat” existed, let alone it was built into Kutztown’s URL! If there was one difficulty throughout this assignment, it was definitely figuring out “how to submit a request” but after 5 minutes of tinkering around I was able to submit my desired book request!

What the Kutztown’s library proved to me, was that with the help of library staff and understanding of the Library’s electronic capabilities, you can truly grab a hold of any book that your heart desires! The two books that I selected entailed a biography of a legendary nomad by the name of “Chris McCandless” and the other book was a van life guide to getting your home on the road! What I discovered was that the library was better suited for biography based research among my van life topic, but when I needed something specific to the overall van life guide, the Library’s electronic capabilities came to the rescue! 

In conclusion, the overall process of gathering these books took no more than 20 minutes to do combined, given the fast help of the library staff and electronic resources. In the end, I didn’t write a blog post about either of these sources, however I did read “Into the Wild” just for enjoyment purposes and the story itself was a delightful/inspiring yet very tragic and grim ending. It’s crazy to think how McCandless can just so easily leave his life comforts behind, and how the rising waters of the Alaskan rivers, trapped McCandless in the lodging bus.
