Cloud is keenly aware that his breathing has fallen shallow, that he might be mistaken any moment for a deer caught in headlights, that fear grips him so horribly, so absolutely, that he can’t even bear to meet Light’s eyes. Slowly, slowly, Cloud exhales through parted lips to gather his courage. 

If anyone else were in the room right now, if anyone else had asked him, Cloud isn’t sure he would have answered.

“I wasn’t a good person.” 

Resounding, resolute. He wishes the truth were otherwise. Cloud balls his hands into tight fists. Tighter and tighter, until the leather covering his knuckles creaks in protest. “I wanted to be strong. Didn’t want to need anybody. I was on my own for so long, it felt good to finally feel like I was better than everyone else.” He stops, wills his hands to relax and flexes out his fingers to relieve some of his tension as he moves towards the window and looks out at the thin trails of smoke rising from the sea of Radiant Garden’s rooftop chimneys haloed by the setting sun. “Selfish.”

Cloud glances back at Light through the flaxen fringe of his bangs. Afraid of what he might find there, but soldiering on nonetheless. He cannot stop now.

“I exploited my darkness. A man named Iblis taught me how to use it, how to…” Cloud nearly bites down on his tongue trying to come to terms with what he is about to say, ”How to kill. How to twist the darkness in people’s hearts. I did whatever he told me, and I liked it. For years. If I hadn’t met Tifa…” 

They might not be standing here right now, talking. Despite that possibility, he doesn’t want anyone's pity. Light’s least of all. 

Disgust, on the other hand... Well, Cloud cannot deny that he deserves that much.

“I won’t blame you if you want me to leave.”

The ship dynamic of "I love you but I will always choose the world over you. I love you but my conscience binds me to the greater good in a way I can never escape. I love you but I would sacrifice you to save the world if I had to, even though it would kill me and I would never forgive myself. I love you and a part of me wishes that I could be the kind of person who would sacrifice everything for you. But I'm not, and I never will be, and if you're going to love me I need you to understand that."

I get a kick out of how nobody ever recognizes the Warrior of Light. I mean, there are widely circulated newspapers, but mass distribution of information is still in its infancy. People will be like, "You there! I need someone to shovel shit for me!" and the WoL is just like "sure, fine with me." Then they realize they have someone who literally saved the world shoveling manure and fall all over themselves apologizing. Or they'll be like, "Watch out! There are bandits on the road!" And the WoL will just smile cryptically like "They don't know I kill gods."

I adore y’shtola now because every single plan she comes up with is nigh-guaranteed to be the most unhinged idea ever thought up by cat or man. Being pursued by cops? COLLAPSE THE TUNNEL AND TELEPORT DIRECTLY INTO HEAVEN. Need to distract the Children of Everlasting Dark? THROW BEEHIVES INTO THEIR HOUSES. Need to perform a diving save into a bottomless pit? TELEPORT DIRECTLY INTO HEAVEN. AGAIN. Need to get on Mt. Gulg but air travel isn’t feasible? GIANT ROBOT. Need a portal to hell? MAKE A DEMON. That doesn’t work? SHOOT A LASER. AT THE MOON. Banger after banger.
