I miss old deviantart. When it wasn't drowning in ai plagiarism slop and reveling in it. When they didn't sell out and alienate their artist base by incorporating ai scraping databases. When it wasn't mask off pro-israli and pro-genocide (I believe because deviantart was owned by Wix? iirc). When you could actually post art on there and people would engage and comment on it, even if it was 'bad' art, because people recognize other people trying to get better at their craft and want to encourage that.
I miss the fun custom animated stamps and fun little emojis used on the site. I miss the old layouts and free widgets and elements that got retroactively put behind a paywall because nothing is sacred in capitalism.
Yes, even old deviantart had its problems, the site has /always/ had a problem with uncensored niche fetish art being posted brazenly because well 'technically it's not breaking rules no one is naked or getting overtly fucked' but it's still fetish art and therefore should be marked as adult content.
I deleted my deviantart when the ai shit came around, but I still miss the good resources I followed. Good stock and pose reference accounts, brush packs, tutorials.
Artstation is just as heinous about the ai slop. Add that I've experienced scammers using artstation to mass email artists with fake job opportunities, it left a very sour taste in my mouth.
The internet is getting so hostile for creatives, for visual artists, for writers, and it's concerning. The cop-out advice of 'make your own website' ignores that search-engine optimization makes it so that personal websites get buried under ads and the popular websites, therefore making it so the personal websites get way less traffic than the social media sites. Starting up a new website to fill the niche deviantart and artstation should fill takes a lot of time and money and work, servers cost money to maintain, and even if you have all of that, it may never get enough traffic and new people to become a real competitor to the big sites. Suffering.

Clients Are Demanding More Web Design Freedom
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/clients-are-demanding-more-web-design-freedom/
Clients Are Demanding More Web Design Freedom
Web designers love to client-proof their creations. It’s all about preventing a rogue client from mucking up a layout or feature. After all, everyone’s happy when things look good.
The practice keeps those technical support requests to a minimum. Or at least it did.
These days, it seems like clients are eager to experiment with design. The more we lock down features, the more frustrated they get. It’s been a growing trend in my freelance business.
I often receive design queries from clients. They want to know how to create specific layouts. Or how to embed video or other third-party content.
It marks a change from how things used to be. So, why are clients suddenly interested in doing it themselves? I have a few theories! I also have thoughts on what we can do to meet this need.
There’s a Higher Standard for Web Design
Today’s clients are avid web consumers. Some have grown up alongside the internet. Therefore, they possess a different set of sensibilities.
The web used to be a novelty. The clients I served 10+ years ago weren’t as attuned to user experience (UX). If anything, they asked for features that went against the grain in this area.
Sure, I still get requests for such features. But they have decreased significantly.
I more often hear from people who want to replicate a specific look. They want a page layout similar to a big brand or competitor.
True, they may want these results on a much smaller budget. But they have an idea of how a website should look and work. And it’s miles away from the clunky designs of yesteryear.
Clients are surrounded by better design. And they want the same for themselves.
No-Code Tools Are Promising a Better Experience
We’ve witnessed an influx of browser-based design tools in recent years. Proprietary systems like Wix market themselves as do-it-all solutions. Even open-source apps like WordPress have gotten into the game with its Site and Block Editors.
The message is that anyone can build a website. Sure, the reality may be blurred (and there’s no mention of quality). But these tools have raised the bar of expectation.
For some website owners, having a site is no longer enough. They also want to create content and personalize the look. Empowered clients, yay!
However, this is a less-than-ideal situation for web designers. We want our clients to accomplish great things with their sites. But there’s a price to all of this newfound freedom.
These tools make building a custom layout easier. But things can get out of hand rather quickly.
I’ve seen this with the WordPress Block Editor. There’s a lot to love about it. However, it doesn’t guarantee success. Those unfamiliar with design can paint themselves into a corner.
For example, building layouts that are hard to maintain. Or accidentally dragging a block into the wrong space. All good for our job security. Not so much for our mental health.
Yes, anyone can build with a no-code tool. But it still takes careful thought and foresight to do it well. That’s why locking things down is still so attractive.
What Should Web Designers Do?
We want to keep our clients happy. Plus, there’s only so much lecturing we can do. So, how can we provide the flexibility clients want while also safeguarding their site?
There are a few ideas that come to mind:
Build with Flexibility in Mind
I’m a very purpose-driven designer. I like to build features that match a client’s stated needs. But sometimes, that leads to inflexibility.
A client will attempt to use a feature in a way that I didn’t intend. The result is often a frustration for both parties.
The lesson here is to build with flexibility in mind. Consider other ways a client may use a feature. Then, provide options for making it work.
Custom WordPress blocks are a good example. Instead of creating a block with a singular layout option, go the extra mile. Add column and row layouts. Allow for different types of content to be input.
These little steps can mitigate issues down the road. Clients won’t have to think outside the box – they’ll already have everything they need.
Invest in Client Education
Design tools are more powerful than ever. That’s a good thing. However, a well-intentioned client could use them to cause havoc.
When people know better, they do better. Thus, education can be just as powerful.
Sit down with clients and teach them the basics. Provide documentation that spells out best practices and things to avoid.
Granted, not everyone has time to do this. In that case, you might employ a third-party resource to help. Curate a list of videos and tutorials to put clients on the right path.
Again, prevention is the best medicine here.
Lock Down What You Can
None of this means we should stop locking things down. A client-proof website is still a noble goal. We might have to be more selective, though.
Tools like the WordPress Block Editor include a locking feature. You can use it to prevent those unintended consequences. Adding block patterns could also satisfy the need to create custom layouts.
You might also seek to limit user permissions. If there’s an area that a client should never touch – don’t give them easy access.
Think about the site’s most mission-critical aspects and act accordingly.
Web Designers Need to Meet Clients Where They Are
Today’s web design clients want to do more with their sites. Sure, they want us to build them something beautiful and functional. But they also want the ability to do it themselves.
There’s no going back on this. The cat’s already out of the bag. Thus, we need to adjust to match these expectations.
We can achieve this through a bit of foresight. Anticipate how clients will interact with their website. Build features that can withstand whatever they throw at it.
We’ll still make mistakes. Plus, some clients will be prone to mishaps. However, these experiences are learning opportunities. Take them and keep evolving. After all, our clients aren’t slowing down.

So I follow this WordPress news site and check in there every few days, and this is one of their recent posts:
Matt Mullenweg, WordPress founder, now also owns Tumblr (and he’s even one of us @ photomatt), so his thoughts on AI got me interested in reading and this is what he thinks:
“I consider all proprietary software to be an evolutionary dead end,” Mullenweg said. They discussed how AI is changing the developer experience. Mullenweg is optimistic about AI working with open source and reiterated what he said recently on Post Status’ Slack:
“Open source and AI are the two mega trends of the next twenty years, and the reason they are complimentary is that GPT4 hasn’t read Shopify’s code. It’s read Drupal’s code and WordPress’ code, and all 55,000 plugins and everything else, so it can write it. If you ask it to write a website, it’s going to write it in an open source thing. It’s not going to write it in these propriety things. From an evolutionary point of view, if you go far enough into the future, someday we’ll see even our proprietary competitors – the Wix’s and Squarespace and Shopify’s of the world, actually running on open source software. “That’s part of our vision with Gutenberg as well as why we made it an even more permissive license than the GPL. We dual-licensed it under the MPL so it could even be embedded in commercial applications, because I really think it’s so important that I want it to be in even commercial applications.”
He’s talking about code and open-source software, and he’s very optimistic about AI’s intervention in those… I’m not a developer, so I don’t really know how to feel about that. [But I remember when GitHub Copilot was launched, a lot of developers, even those working on open-source stuff, were against how Copilot would use the code published on GitHub]
With Matt being very pro-AI, I wonder how it will eventually affect us here on Tumblr...
#in the end matt is still one of those tech bros#hmmmm#ai#wordpress#matt mullenweg#tumblr#open source#not fandom#miyamiwu.src

Small Business SEO – Top Tips you Need to Know
Are you new to the world of SEOs? Well, it isn’t that difficult as it sounds! Here are some of the small business SEO top tips that will help you boom your business:
1. Choosing the right keywords
SEO or Search Engine Optimization helps you rank better in a search engine. The reason that you lag behind your competitors, or you are not getting enough visitors to your site is that, your rivals are putting colossal effort in using the right SEO technique than probably you are doing.
Using the right set of keywords and small business SEO technique can either make your break all your efforts. The classic web marketing formula says that, although those popular keyword search tools can help us drive traffic to our website up to a certain extent, the real challenge however, is to have a thorough understanding about your own site.
You can either use hit and trial method or logically perform hypothesis and tests to understand which exact set of keywords are most suitable for your business. You can also use Google AdWord’s ‘exact match’ feature to find specific and restrictive keywords. Some of the popular keyword research resources are: Moz Keyword Explorer, Google AdWords Keyword Planner Tool, Google Trends, Microsoft Bing Ads Intelligence and Wordtracker’s Free Basic Keyword Demand.
An easy method to drive traffic to your site is by starting a new blog. Write posts for your blog and insert the right keywords under the right headings that directly relate to your business. While making a post, do remember that Google Algorithm only recognizes 100% unique and plagiarism free content. Small business SEO contents that are useful to the users and don’t have bogus keyword inserts rank high on the search engine list.
2. Join the Google My Business Account community
If you just started your business and you require walk- in customers, then a Google My Business Account can help you in growing your business faster. If you register your business with the Google My Business account, then when people use their smartphones to find nearby places, your business and its details will show up on the local map results on Google.com.
3. Building a mobile friendly website
Today, 70% of people use their smartphones to do a Google search. If your website is not mobile friendly and if some of the contents get spilled out from the mobile screen, it’s very likely that your visitors will soon get frustrated. Not only do you require optimizing your website to be mobile friendly, but your mobile website should have fast load speeds as well. All major website building tools such as WordPress, Weebly or Wix, have simple plugins to get you an automatic mobile friendly version of your website.
4. Understanding your target customers
If you just started a restaurant business, then it’s probably illogical to grab attention of the customers who are in search of a book publisher! Therefore, it’s very important to know your customers and understand what they need. You must use social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pininterrest and others to grab attention of your customers. Also, you must never ignore the reviews and ratings given by your customers on a blog post or a product. Businesses with high response rates are preferred over those who chose to remain silent.

What Sets a Custom Web Development Agency Apart from Template-Based Solutions?
Your website is the face of your business in the digital age. Often, this is the first point of contact for potential clients and customers, making it highly important that your website stands out, functions smoothly, and has a reflection of your brand identity. Business owners always face a dilemma when making a website: whether they should go for a custom-built website or use a pre-made template. While template-based solutions might seem like an affordable and quick option, custom web development offers a variety of advantages that can better serve your business in the long term. In this blog, we’ll explore what sets a custom web development agency apart from template-based solutions and why a custom website is worth the investment.
Customization vs. Limitations
Custom Web Development: One of the greatest benefits of hiring a custom web development agency is having a completely unique website. Custom development allows for the full creative freedom to give businesses the flexibility to design a website that perfectly aligns with their brand, business goals, and user needs. From bespoke designs to custom features, a web development agency ensures that your website will be distinct and tailored specifically to your audience.
With a custom agency, you can build the exact layout, features, and functionality that your business needs. This could be a custom-built content management system (CMS), specific integrations, or a unique user experience (UX). A custom website ensures your business stands out from competitors and serves customers in a more personalized way.
Template-Based Solutions: On the other hand, template-based solutions, such as website builders like WordPress, Wix, or Squarespace, often come with pre-set layouts and features that can limit customization. While these platforms offer convenience and speed, they are often designed for generic use. As a result, your website may end up looking like others, lacking the unique branding and personalized experience that helps businesses differentiate themselves in a crowded market.
Templates are designed generally for wide audiences. In such a scenario, the design and functionality may not precisely suit the needs of your business. Customization within such sites is possible but mostly in relation to extensive workarounds or third-party plugins and still is somewhat restrictive than custom development.
Scalability and Flexibility
Custom web development is another key benefit. It's scalable and adaptable. Your business will grow, and your website needs to change and grow with it. A custom web development agency will build your site with growth in mind, ensuring that it can handle increased traffic, new functionalities, and integrations as your business demands evolve.
Whether you want to add more products, create custom landing pages, or integrate new tools like a customer relationship management (CRM) system, a custom-built website can easily be scaled to meet your future needs. High-quality custom web development solutions ensures that your website is flexible and can adapt to future trends and technologies, making it a long-term investment for your business.
Template-Based Solutions: Template-based websites, while quick and inexpensive to launch, may struggle to keep up with your business’s growth. As your website expands or requires more advanced features, template-based platforms can become restrictive. Scaling a template-based website often involves reworking the template or adding external plugins, which can complicate the development process and lead to issues with website performance or compatibility.
Also, template-based solutions will have to be redesigned or migrated in case your business outgrows the constraints of the platform, and that means more costs and headaches later on.
SEO and Performance Optimization
Custom web development: Search Engine Optimization or SEO is fundamental for getting organic traffic in the website. A web development agency develops your website, considering SEO. Here the code, structure, and content are optimized, thereby enhancing the search engine's ability to view it more conveniently. Custom websites will consider the best practices of SEO by cleaning the code up, making sure the website's hierarchy is proper and facilitates crawling and indexing of a website.
Additionally, custom websites are optimized for better performance. Your web development agency will ensure that your website loads quickly, is mobile responsive, and performs well on various devices. This means that users will have a better experience and higher rankings on Google and other search engines.
Template-Based Solutions: Most template-based websites have generic SEO settings pre-configured. Although you can customize some of the SEO settings, like meta tags and keywords, the underlying structure is not optimized for the best performance. Moreover, templates have redundant code that slows download times or negatively impacts SEO.
In most cases, template websites need extra plugins for enhancing SEO or performance. This may create complications and possibly cause conflicts with other features. Optimizing a template website for speed and SEO is usually much more time-consuming, effortful, and technical compared to working on a custom-built site.
Security Features
Custom web development: Security is a prime aspect of any website, especially when dealing with sensitive customer data, payments, or login systems. The agencies of custom web development ensure that they build websites from scratch and with strong security measures in place. Advanced security measures such as SSL certificates, secure coding practices, and regular updates can be implemented to protect your website from potential threats such as hacking, data breaches, and malware.
In addition, a custom web development agency can offer ongoing security audits to make sure that your website stays secure over time. Since security threats evolve, your custom website can be updated with new features or protocols to stay protected.
Template-Based Solutions: Template-based sites are more prone to attacks because they have been adopted by many different sites. This makes them an attractive target for hackers. Generally, there is a possibility that the template code contains known vulnerabilities, which if left unpatched, might lead to exploits.
While templates usually have some built-in security features, it is not as robust compared to a custom development agency. Moreover, most of the template-based solutions heavily rely on third-party plugins to add security features, which can lead to potential conflicts and vulnerabilities.
Long-term Support and Maintenance
Custom Web Development: Most firms that provide custom web development offer long-term support and maintenance so that your site stays fresh and works great. This may include new content, feature addition, or solving technical problems altogether, depending on your specific business needs.
In contrast to templates, which can demand some other vendors or third-party services to make further updates, a custom-built website offers more direct and personalized support. Your agency is aware of everything concerning your website, making for a faster issue resolution and smoother updates.
Template-Based Solutions: Basic template-based websites may have very basic support options. Still, the level of support can vary greatly from template provider to template provider, and many template providers only provide limited support, so users usually must rely on forums, third-party resources, or paid support plans, which can be frustrating in case of technical issues requiring immediate attention.
As your business expands, you could also have to hire a developer for customization or redesigning of the template at a certain point in time, which will increase cost and complexity of the maintenance.
Distinct User Experience (UX)
Custom Web Development: When you get a custom web development company, you have the option of creating unique and bespoke user experience tailored to the goals of your business and what your audience desires. A custom-built website allows your agency to design an intuitive, engaging, conversion-optimized user interface while implementing it. Every component of the UX can be designed with your target audience in mind-from navigation to interaction elements-to ensure a seamless experience for users.
Template-Based Solutions: Templates are already designed with pre-built UX designs, but they are often generic and may not provide the best experience for your target audience. Since templates are used by a wide range of businesses, their user experience may not be tailored to specific industries or goals. Thus, businesses may miss out on opportunities to improve user engagement or conversions.
Cost Considerations
Custom Web Development: Even though custom web development is usually costlier than template-based solutions, it often offers a better return in the long run. A site built for your business means that you will not always have to redesign or redo it as your business expands and changes. ROI on well-optimized, scalable, and secure websites can go far beyond the cost of initial development.
Template-Based Solutions: A template-based website is cheaper to implement but may require additional investments in customization, plugins, and ongoing maintenance. As your business grows, you may find yourself outgrowing the template's capabilities, leading to the need for a redesign or migration to a more robust solution.

Conclusion
In conclusion, although templates are inexpensive and can be ready in much less time, custom development is more valuable in the long run. A site built custom will be easier to adapt, scalable, and secure and offer a unique user experience for your business. When you are working with a custom web development company, you're making a wise investment in your company. You are building the foundation of a website which evolves with your business to fulfil the objectives of your company. It's the time if you are prepared to do this, you can seriously investigate the benefits associated with custom web development solutions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is custom web design better than templates?
Custom web design provides unique, tailored solutions that align with a business's brand, goals, and target audience. It allows for greater flexibility, scalability, and a personalized user experience, ensuring the website stands out and can grow with the business. Templates often lack this level of customization and differentiation.
What is the difference between web design and web template?
Web design refers to the process of designing a one-of-a-kind website from scratch, from layout and functionality to user experience. A web template is a pre-made design framework that users can customize to create their websites. Templates are faster and cheaper but lack the originality and flexibility of custom designs.

You should be very careful while making this choice because what seems perfect for an individual might not be as effective for a business organization.
Choose an ecommerce business model that matches with your business goals:
B2C (Business-to-Consumer): Business-to-Consumer model which entails directly selling products to consumers using Channels such as Shopify or Wix.
B2B (Business-to-Business): Sales of products in large quantities to other establishments.Evaluation of Merchandise:
DTC (Direct-to-Consumer): The elimination of the concept of middlemen and selling products directly to the customers from your website.

It is important to learn who your potential customers are, and this can be done using metrics from Google Analytics, SEMrush, and social media. Build buyer personas based on:
Demographics

5. Purchase a Domain Name
The first thing that you have to do after deciding a name for your business is to purchase a matching domain name. If such a domain name is not available, someone by that name already exists. This means you have to repeat step 4.
Your domain name is your web address. Get a name that people can easily memorise and which should be related to your brand. Pair it with reliable hosting services like:
