One part mystery, one part adventure, all fun
Book Review of: The Avebury Legacy (Vampires : The New Age #1) by Natasha Duncan-Drake
Tumblr media
In the interest of full disclosure, I'll start by saying I've been acquainted with Tasha for roughly a decade through mutual fandom interests. When she started writing professionally I was interested because I enjoyed a lot of her fanfiction, however given the broad genres she covers far from everything she writes is to my tastes. For quite a while I thought The Avebury Legacy would be one of those stories, I was wrong. It's placement in the 'horror' genre is much more Dracula than Steven King, and when I found that out I decided to give it a try.
In The Avebury Legacy, Nate Laven has been a vampire hunter quite some time, unfortunately the last year has been spent trying to avoid turning into what he hunts. He and his partner Lexie have finally found the promising lead they needed on the relics that are their only hope for a cure. Of course they never expected where their search would lead them. Told from Nate's point of view, The Avebury Legacy is an interesting and unique story set in the modern vampire genre. With so much written in the genre in recent years, all the material available can make it hard to find something that's a bit unique. A central character's quest for the one thing that's going to save them is a premise that's been seen before, but along with the vampires themselves, The Avebury Legacy has its own take on the tropes that keep you wondering and guessing what will happen next. The best part of the novel, however, is in my opinion Natasha's strength no mater which genre she's currently writing in: the characters. You are taken on a journey with Nate as he tries not to lose himself to his condition, and while he tries to figure out if the lines that are being blurred in his relationship with Lexie are the result of his own feelings and the trials they've gone through together, or if their condition is manipulating them. You make a real connection with Nate as the story goes on, which with this sort of plot is the key to caring if the characters even succeed. One of my favourite secondary characters is another hunter named Brian Hawker. Brian's a hardened man with a dry sense of humour, and the taunting banter between him and Nate makes for some absolutely wonderful comedic moments. I haven't read the prequel, The Beginning, yet, but it will definitely be my next ebook purchase as I look forward to reading more about Nate and Lexie's adventures.

It's Free Fiction Friday! Woohoo!
Greetings Lovelies!
Every month, usually the last Friday, I give away an original short story/novelette to all the members of my newsletter.
This month we have a paranormal romance with psychics and vampires and a rock band.

Save a Cat, Bag a Boyfriend: Of Psychics & Vampires
Maisie is psychic. This is often a pain in her behind, but no matter how innocuous her visions may seem, they always have a reason. When the universe sees fit to guide her to rescuing a cat, it leads her into a situation that not only might gain her a boyfriend, but one which has a rock band and vampires as well. Romance and excitement await but so does danger. (Het with a gay side pairing)

馃巸Haunting Horror for Halloween!馃巸
Free book for Halloween.
Tumblr media
Happy Halloween one and all.
As has become a tradition for me and Soph at Wittegen Press, we like to give away a free book for Halloween (link and instructions at the bottom). It started when we heard about @neil-gaiman's All Hallows Read way back in 2012, where the idea is to give books as a Halloween treat.
Soph and I created eBooks to give away from 2012 to 2021. We took a little break in 2022 for family reasons, but now I am back to continue the tradition!馃懟 (Soph's been too busy at work this year to join in, poor thing - hopefully she'll have more time next Halloween).
This year the book is called Mirror Mirror: A Haunting Tale of Horror, which is the first story, and it also contains The Crosses We Bear.
A chill runs down your spine as you enter your refurbished home in Mirror Mirror. Little do you know that glancing in a mirror will spell doom for you. In The Crosses We Bear, meet Lyle and Susan, two ad executives who are about to discover that a remote Scottish hotel is only the beginning of their terrifying journey. Follow their story of facing terrible things in the dark as they confront the horror they find.
I also decided it would be fun to read Mirror Mirror over on my YouTube channel. I hope I come off as sufficiently spine tingling 馃槺 - although not too creepy or YouTube will bury my vid 馃槈.
The book is available from all the usual eBook sites, but to get it FREE you need to pop to Smashwords - and use this coupon code on checkout: HA85H
The offer is valid until 01 Dec 2023 - so grab your copy before it runs out.
馃巸Please be aware the stories this year are not kid friendly - they are for older trick or treaters who enjoy a bit of horror.馃巸
I do love writing a bit of dark horror from time to time. It balances out my usual desperate need for a happy ending I suppose 馃槈. Hope you enjoy the stories and have a fabulous Halloween.
If you are looking for more spooky horror, all the previous years books can be found here.

Sid is half-fae, but that's only part of his secret. Another part is he's also a little bit - okay a lot - attracted to Jamie of the perfect abs and lovely nature. When Sid gets over excited there's glitter and you don't usually get a lot of glitter in a zoo.

A/N: This month I had a little trouble coming up with an idea for the story, so my husband kindly gave me a challenge. He told me to write a story with penguins, a unicorn and snow, so I did and Menagerie is the humorous result :).

How to change a B&N url into a Nook UK url to find your books...
I distribute my books via Smashwords and I thought several of them must have been simply refused by Nook UK because they didn't show up when I searched for my name. It turns out they are there, they just don't show up in searches. It mostly seems to be my adult titles, but there are a couple of others that are simply not there. I have no idea why, but the only way I found them was by translating the B&N url into the Nook UK format. We link to Nook UK from Wittegen Press when we can so that Nook users can easily find our books. For my reference and for anyone else having the same trouble I thought I'd document how to do it. Here is a B&N url for my latest book Cat's Confidence (it's on both sites which is what made it easy to use).:
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/cats-confidence-natasha-duncan-drake/1116968975?ean=2940045280310 here is the Nook UK URL:
http://uk.nook.com/ebooks/cats-confidence-by-natasha-duncan-drake/2940045280310 So to translate one to the other you have to do the following three things:
Replace聽www.barnesandnoble.com/w/ from the B&N URL with聽uk.nook.com/ebooks/
Add a by- before the author's name
remove the first number and ?ean= (e.g聽1116968975?ean=) from the last part of the URL
That then gives you the correct URL on Nook UK for your ebook that is on Barnes and Noble. It doesn't seem to work with big name books because they have different ref numbers, but they'll show up in searches anyway.

New Title: Out of the Frying Pan by Tasha D-Drake
New book out today. I actually wrote this one last year as a commission at http://PennyDreadfuls21.com and it came out of it's 60 exclusivity period on 24th Dec, but, truth be told, I totally forgot about it until now :). My commissioner asked for modern setting, male/male, a vampire and a human in a situation bringing them together with conflict from one or both that meant they really didn't want an entanglement. This short story is what I came up with. Please be aware it has mature content.
Title: Out of the Frying Pan Author: Tasha D-Drake Price: US $0.99, UK 拢0.77, EUR0.89 Dan works his magic with food as a new up and coming chef, what he does not need is his restaurant being destroyed by an explosion and ending up trapped with the UK's hottest food critic in what's left of his kitchen. When vampirism enters the equation it makes things a whole lot worse. Our main site's running a little slow this morning (I assume Dreamhost are up to something) so here are some direct links in case it fails to load. Amazon US | Amazon UK |Smashwords

New Title: The Beginning by Natasha Duncan-Drake
I have a new title out today. It has been previously published in the Wittegen Press Giveaway Games Anthologies, but because it is part of an existing published book series (Vampires: The New Age), it is also now available stand alone. It's a novelette (~12k wds), so a nice quick read full of excitement and action.
Title: The Beginning (Prequel to Advent) Series: Vampires: The New Age #0.1 Author: Natasha Duncan-Drake Price: US $0.99, UK 拢0.77, EUR 0.86 Nate hunts vampires and he's good at it. However, when he comes across Lexie while stalking his latest quarry, he finds out life can be a whole lot more complicated than even he knew. Lexie is a white witch with a dark secret. When one of the vampires Nate is tracking turns out to be an initiate of the worst kind of blood magic, that secret might just save his life. This title is a prequel to the previously published novel Advent. It is also available in the following anthologies: Myriad Imaginings: All The Stories From The Wittegen Press Giveaway Games Half of Everything: Stories by Natasha Duncan-Drake From The Wittegen Press Giveaway Games Bright Young Things: Young Adult Stories From The Wittegen Press Giveaway Games

New Book for All Hallows Read: When Darkness Beckons
Wittegen Press is supporting All Hallow's Read 2012 by giving away a free eBook on Amazon. The brainchild of Neil Gaiman, the principle of All Hallow's Read is simple: during the week of Halloween, or the day itself, give someone a scary book. Well, we can't hand out our books physically, so we're going to let people help themselves. From聽31st October to 3rd Nov 2012 When Darkness Beckons will be available for聽FREE聽on all聽Amazon聽sites. When Darkness Beckons聽(wittegen Page) Amazon聽US,聽UK,聽DE,聽FR,聽ES,聽IT,聽JP The book contains two spooky stories: Catcher of Souls by Natasha Duncan-Drake When Miles sets foot inside The King James pub he knows instantly there is a disembodied soul in residence. The question is, is the soul responsible for the deaths that have happened on the site or were they just accidents. It's Miles' job to catch troublesome lost souls, but when danger strikes he might just be too late. Some Things Are Stranger... by Sophie Duncan Life is weird enough for Jake being a werewolf on the run from The Pagan Dawn, ruthless hunters determined to wipe out all 'paranormal scum'. His luck runs out when he is ambushed after a Halloween party and, badly injured, he dives into the shadows of an abandoned warehouse with his pursuers on his heels. Yet, Jake discovers that he is not alone and his encounter with a goofy hobo, who talks about the place being haunted, teaches him that all strangeness is relative. Now because the majority of our audience is on Amazon and we had to enrol the book into KDP Select to ensure it would be free on the right days it is only available on Amazon. However, never fear, you can still read it if you don't have a Kindle. We apologise to non Amazon users, but this was the only way we could see to do it and still reach everyone.聽 This is how to get the book if you don't read on Kindle:
Download one of the free Apps Amazon offer for reading Kindle books:聽UK聽|聽US聽|聽DE聽|聽FR聽|聽ES聽|聽IT聽|聽JP
Wait until 31st Oct (midnight PST is when the promotions come online) then download the book.
Now you have two choices either:
Read the book on the ap you downloaded
or
Download this useful piece of software聽Calibre.
The eBook has no DRM, so you can copy it to where you like and Calibre will convert it to just about any format for you.
Read it on your usual eReader.
