withc!mumbo and grian, maybe one of the first times mumbo tries walking around as a human ^^ mumbo tends to lean too far foward since he's used to his bird spine paha mumbo's since adjusted perfectly

yeah! familiars have to get used to their human forms, especially if they're adults at the time of the spell. since grian lives alone he was pretty happy to spend some time helping mumbo, but of course very entertaining to watch him fall straight on his face ^^

Grian the kind of witch to try jumping off the roof of the house the moment he hears that the wings should be capable of flight

I do honestly believe mumbo would have to physically restrain him to keep him from jumping off the roof of the house XD like I'm pretty sure that's canon

yess the withc au!! I think about how grian needs help with his growing wings while Mumbo needs to preen his. Sitting together, reaching around to help comb the feathers

you're right you're right i remember saying before that mumbo underestimates how long it takes to preen his feathers in his human form since he's used to smaller wings in bird form ^^ They really do be helping each other. and I can only imagine grian's excitement when mumbo declares g's wings big enough to allow flight :)

I just had a thought… mumbo probably didnt have a name as a bird. I think the WITCH is generally the one who will name their familiar, maybe with some discussion if necessary. But imagine, mumbo is thrown into his human form for the first time, suddenly capable of language, and he instantly starts rambling on and on about how that spell felt, how weird it is to have fingers, THIS NEW MUSTACHE, how he has feet and how his wings are much bigger- grian, just happy that the spell worked, thinks to himself. Then interrupted him- “I think your name should be Mumbo Jumbo, if you’re going to be talking like that all the time”

WEASELLLL!!!! YOUR AU!! How did Mumbo and Grian meet? Does Mumbo prefer human or bird form? How do they communicate when Mumbo's a bird?

HIHIIIIII um so i got a bit carried away. i had a hard time thinking of something that wasnt too cliche (ie, mumbo was injured and grian nursed him etcetc) soo... i ended up deciding that mumbo as a chough had nested in grian's home before he moved in... but i wanted to know WHERE in the house... so.

i drew grians house XD likely isnt a final design ANYWAY mumbo probably lived in that tower up there. ok cool XD

mumbo was living in Grian’s house, but choughs as a species dont like to move around! so when grian bought the place mumbo never left. and. sorta became a bit of a nuisance living up in that tower n defending it... grian eventually just wouldnt go up there. BUT, grian's form of magic like with crystals n everything becomes… very shiny. Mumbo would spend a lot more time at Grian’s window just watching. He probably would have stolen some crystals if he were less nervous, but it's probably better he didnt ^^ Time goes on and they get used to each other’s company, and grian decides he could use an assistant n turns mumbo into a familiar :) (ill probably go into the process of getting a familiar later ^^)

Mumbo i think likes being bird form better simply because he's a jumpy guy and appreciates being able to make quick getaways or hide in tight places! but I think he starts to like the human form when he realizes he gets to be a part of human society and do things birds could never do :)

I would say that a comprehend language spell is not one grian can easily cast with his focus yet, BUT starts buying sheets of that spell to invoke (now i want to figure out the magic system FRICK) because mumbo likes to purposely take off his form-keeping accessories when he doesn't want to talk to grian X) but like, mumbo can understand human language in both forms but can only speak in human form, and grian doesn't understand or speak chough without spells

Notes on Familiars

a witch can turn (nearly) any creature into a familiar

the familiar spell consumes a witch's focus, doesn't just drain it (consumes part of the witch)

a familiar must obey all commands by the witch, but they get a longer lifespan and the language comprehension of the witch

The familiar spell instills the focus with some of the castor's energy, the portion of the given energy must match the portion taken from the animal. The witch must have enough energy to spare which can be cultivated through practice or training

This is why the witch will take some aspects of the animal and the animal gets a longer lifespan!

i was just wondering, was grian friends with bird mumbo beforehand? obviously he wasn't sentient, but had they bonded as human and animal until grian decided to cast the spell?

or was mumbo just chilling as a bird one day and then all of a sudden was human because some witch cast a spell on him. then he and said witch bonded and became friends after that. that'd be pretty funny

hihi thank you so much!! i call the au "withc" au :) a mix of witch + hc (hermitcraft) ;) only slightly confusing!

mumbo had lived in grians house (you can see his house here, this post also sorta answers your question) before grian ever moved in. Once grian moved in, mumbo was territorial and didnt let grian up to the tower that he settled. grian didnt really care about the tower so he didnt want to put effort in scaring out some old bird. BUT! mumbo took more and more notice of the shiny pretty magic grian did downstairs, so he would watch through the window until eventually grian left a window open and mumbo sorta just wandered in! The rule with the familiar spell is that it will not work if both parties do not want to be bonded like that. i figure there must have been some moment where mumbo and grian sorta realize that theyre buds? and grian takes the opportunity to try the spell and it works :) but there should be some meaningful moment i just dont know what that could be yet ^^

Okay so FIRST: the amethyst.

Because of the ourple I am already associating it with the rift-- since Grian does illusion magic, do you think one of his abilities with the amethyst could be to send others into a make-believe illusion world? To make them see and 'live in' other hypothetical 'timelines' and possibilities? In Grian's hands, I could see these powers either turning out wondrous or horrific... or a chaotic mix of both.

And SECOND: corvid Mumbo will never not make me go tee hee -kicks my legs back and forth-

God I can imagine him being a very good fit for a witch that runs off of crystals, being instinctively inclined to snatch up shiny things on default. Do you think he has his own personal collection of crystally knick-knacks outside of the amethyst Grian gives him? And when Grian grows those wings in, oh boy... Mumbo is going to have quite the situation in his hands. Teaching him to fly, to preen, to avoid knocking everything on the shelves over every time he turns around.

Anyways, looking forward to the other stuff you come up with for this AU!! I'm very in love with the designs and concept!

I’m trying to do research on like. Dnd and elder scrolls types of magic to get a sense on what is feasible to like, just some self taught witch BUT. I think sending physically sending someone to like, a fake dimension of his creation would be the end goal, for him. At the moment he can probably handle more hallucinatory things? Or hypnotic things? like as long as the target is asleep he can create reaaally realistic images of, like you say, timelines and worlds :] if I were at all informed on any EVO stuff id say theres some watcher influence BUT! Im not ^^; sooo grian just be doing wacky things XD

YES CORVID MUMBO bro I was drawing him with the black wings and I was thinking of you and your vamp grian avian mumbo au XD AND YES! As in my previous post I totally thought mumbo and grian grow closer simply because mumbo’s bird brain gets transfixed on grains crystals :] actually- I considered making mumbo steal some of Grian’s stock and grian turning mumbo into a familiar to stop this behavior but I decided the familiar adoption process has to be consensual… and mumbo had to be nice to Grian’s collection XD after they’re connected tho? Yeah mumbo just puts pockets some of his stuff sometimes XD honestly yeah tho. He probably finds stuff when he goes around flying and I wouldnt be surprised if mumbo brings something back and Grian’s like- dude. How did you get that thats super magically charged. And mumbos like idk shiny :>

IM THINKING SO HARD ABOUT WHEN GRIAN’S WINGS GROW OOOOOOOOOO yeah honestly- I think as mumbo is getting used to his human form he also knocks into things? But quickly adjusts? But once GRIANS wings get big? Yeah no it takes him a while to stop rushing around and knocking alllll his fragile stuff around (me thinking about grian flying for the first time…. That does something to me….)

Sadly I'm still kinda stuck on a couple of key points, like what grian does as a job, and how mumbo really feels about magic and witches and humans?

But I do like to imagine the moments where grian is trying to teach mumbo very basic elemental magic, like maybe how to control a stream of water, or summon a breeze. really gentle things that grian gets tired of (in favor of more destructive magic that mumbo refuses to have grian even practice in the house) I think mumbo really likes stuff that connects him back to nature :) peace love and plants xoxo

oh that reminded me- i can see mumbo quickly taking the role of a bossy parent, especially when it comes to the cleanliness of the house? he's lived there longer than grian it means more to him yknow! plus i think grian is pretty messy and leaves his studies all around ^^ My last drawing- with mumbo preparing food, i think he quickly took over that responsibility for the both of them since i think grian doesnt take a lot of time to think about his nutrition with all his studying (though, if the two of them fight mumbo will just find something to eat as a bird outside or simply cook for just himself sadhjkf)

Nice, an old au is back, glad it wasn't abandoned like others. In any case, how large would Grian's wing grow? Is it just gonna stay tiny or eventually grow to Mumbo's size?

PAHA it’s alright when aus get abandoned, much better than if creators come back to revive it when they don’t actually care for it I think ^^

Grian’s wings should grow to the same size as mumbo’s :) (maybe slightly smaller since grian is a bit shorter) I’m excited to get to the point since then mumbo could teach grian how to fly 👀

But for the moment they’re still tiny and mumbo makes fun of him for it ahdhsh

Thank you very much! my latest post was the first time in a while that i posted about it, so i might as well do a refresher :)

My eventual goals for the au is to assign every hermit as witch or familiar, or at least some other related figure in this fantasy world ^^

At the moment, the only confirmed pairs are mumbo and grian, mumbo having originally been a chough! a kind of bird, which grian cast the familiar spell on, turning mumbo into a person and giving grian some bird features :)

Mumbo has to serve as grian's assistant sorta? I tentatively decided that grian should run an enchanting/illusion service based in his house..? or maybe he has a small shop in a town nearby? and in the meantime he studies, uh, a bunch of magic that i havent figured out yet ^^
