"Will you still be saying it's grand when my father shows up here with a shotgun?" Luke tries to keep his tone light to not sour the mood, but there was an eerie echo of likelihood to his words. One of the first lessons he had learned in life was a simple one -- Landrys and Breelands didn't mix.
( And should they cross paths, it usually ended in venomous words and blood spilled. )
The familial feud pre-dated his own birth, the details of it murky to him even into adulthood, the hushed silences and cold snap that took over the room whenever Jasper's family was mentioned in a room of his own was still fresh in his mind.
It was a stark contrast to the room they were in, where all he could feel was the warmth of the fire and the whiskey and Jasper's smile in the confined shared space.
He reaches for the Jameson bottle, unscrewing the signature red cap to take a generous gulp of it, cups and cutlery not something that they had concerned themselves with when they found themselves in the reality of what he had once thought was just a fantasy.
When he swallows, he smiles at him, a response to the request rather than a wholly genuine one. Try as he may, he can't shake the sense of foreboding that crept up on him every time Jasper wasn't keeping his thoughts solely occupied.
"I know I make y'happy, I know you do the same for me, and I know that won't mean shit if that door gets put through on top of us."
Whether it be by his kin or Jasper's, he can't see that scenario ending pretty for either of them.
He holds the bottle out in offer to him, his eyes searching the other's for a reassurance that he knows in his bones neither of them could truly give.
"Is this real life, Jay, or are we just waiting it out until the other shoe drops?"

“Ya know, the more I sit in here, the more I think we’ll be grand here for a few days. It’s a nice place, and ain’t nobody we know gonna come this far into New Orleans, especially not down by the docks,” Jasper mused.
The seemingly casual statement held a deeper meaning. By ‘nobody’, he meant their families, and by ‘alright’, he meant they’d be safe from either one of their kin trying to drag them back to the dusty corner of rural Louisiana playing host to their decades-long feud, which saw Jasper and them on opposing sides, like a Bayou Romeo and Juliet.
Jasper sat opposite his lover on the floor of the tiny studio apartment. Cajun takeout and Jameson whiskey sat between them, whilst a small fire burned in the corner. The mattress where they’d sleep sat close by, with the bags they’d grabbed in their hurry at the end. It was a small and makeshift place, but a tiny, hidden corner of a sprawling city.
Despite the dark predicament, Jasper smiled at them. “Come on, darlin’, let me see you smile at least. You know, even just that makes me happier than any of them ever could.”

Stares abounded towards Jasper from all across the office, and the young photojournalist knew exactly why. First, his attire. Even in the age of hybrid working and more casual offices, it remained beyond the norm for someone to turn up at the magazine in casual clothing, like the gym shorts, vest, baseball jacket and sneakers that Jasper had on that morning. With a gym bag slung over his shoulder, sunglasses propped above mussed hair and the lingering scent of sweat, nicotine and bourbon from the night before, Jasper knew those fine details just added to the mystique of him that morning.
Second, and undoubtedly more important, Jasper attracted looks for the scoop he’d left on the editor’s desk. Word travelled fast in a magazine office, and by the time he reached his office, he figured everyone around him must know what he’d found out. Their opinions didn’t interest him, however. He pushed his door open to find the only one whose opinion he cared about already by his desk, in his usual seat. Jasper smirked and laughed, proceeding to stroll into the office. “Make yourself at home, why don’t you…” he mused, tone playful and another laugh following. “Heard about my scoop, I assume?”

@ofdreamland
A mere three months prior, Jasper would never have imagined himself in the position which he presently was, namely turning up at the doorstep of a guy at 3am for sex. However, as much as the whole experience was still new to Jasper, lust overrode uncertainty each and every time. Therefore, no hint of nerves, anxiety or fear were evident for anyone who might look at him and indeed any such feelings paled distinctly in comparison to the lust, desire and arousal pumping thickly through his veins at the prospect of spending another night with Leon.
Upon reaching Leon’s door, Jasper knocked loudly four times and stood back whilst he awaited a response. Bourbon ran through his veins alongside the lust and the combination of drunk and horny would perhaps be quite tempting to Leon when he answered. As he waited, Jasper took a cigarette from the pack in his pocket and placed it between his lips, striking a flame with ease to light it up just as Leon answered. “Evenin’...” Jasper said by way of introduction, his natural Southern drawl more pronounced than usual thanks to his inebriation.

Jasper Reviews: Grovedaughter Witchery
I NO LONGER HAVE TO WRITE MY OWN BOOK BECAUSE @breelandwalker WROTE IT FOR ME SEVERAL YEARS IN ADVANCE! I COULD SCREAM AND DANCE JOYOUSLY RIGHT NOW!
Okay, that's very dramatic, but I did promise to @ Bree in this review and she didn't specify how to @ her.
Before I begin, it took me way too long to realize that Bree's username is supposed to be read as "Bree Landwalker", because my second-step cousin has the last name Walker and I genuinely thought that Bree's name was actually Breeland Walker. Bully me however you'd like for that one, I deserve it.
Let's actually get into the review now that I'm done being a dramatic crackhead.
I ordered through Amazon, and unlike some books I got recently, it came in completely fine and unbent. Not a point for or against Bree because she doesn't control Amazon, but something I wanted to note.
This book was printed in 2016, or as I like to call it, "the year Jasper went crazy over radio stuff". Ah, 2016 was such a simpler time...let's see if this still holds up in 2021!
First, I would like to sing praises for the disclaimer/author's note at the beginning of the book. It felt more...genuine than most disclaimers. The foreword about what makes a witch was also a lovely touch.
Chapter one is the practical advice chapter, which goes over a lot of stuff recommended for beginning witches - research, formerly common words to no longer use, fire safety (Bree is after my volunteer firefighter heart, I swear), safe herbs to burn for smoke cleansing (and why smoke cleansing isn't "smudging"), the possibility of spiritual attack, consent in love spells and baneful magic, stuff on covens and solitary practice...
And she emphasizes safety, which I can appreciate. There are even ideas and things listed here that I've never seen before, and I've been all over the place in some witch communities and in different witch books.
Chapter two is filled with tutorials, including personal experience from Bree on spell writing. She breaks it down into simple steps that are easy to follow, especially if you have problems with keeping your attention on something (cough, me).
We love a witch who talks about the safety standards that food-grade plants are held to in market stores, and Bree definitely covers that. One thing I didn't quite understand is why herb names were capitalized all the time, while food names were only capitalized when they were supposed to.
I love the emphasis on being able to rely on LED candles if you don't feel comfortable using an open flame. Muah. This makes my firefighter heart very happy because I'd prefer that people be responsible when it comes to flames. I can relate to the accidental burning of fingers on cauldrons and such, because I burnt my hand on donut machinery back when my sperm donor worked in a donut shop.
I also loved the witchy travel kit, where Bree talked about what she carried in a cookie tin at the time. I also liked the proposed substitutions for what she carried and why she carried them.
There's also a guide on how to make a "witch web", and I like that Bree addressed the problems with dreamcatchers (those problems being that a lot of them are just cheap knockoffs mass-produced for profit without a care to the tribes that these originated from). The witch web seems like a very interesting concept and I look forward to fucking around with it in the future.
I'll definitely be coming back to this chapter in the future after I post this review and have time to make a scapegoat.
Chapter three is about charms, where we transition from how-to's to spells written or used by Bree.
The first thing we're presented with is sachet charms, and a general household protection one at that. Bree talks about the different kinds of sachets (I had no idea there were different kinds???) and details in every entry (a new spell every entry, up to three per page!) where you should put it and how you should activate it.
After that, there are walnut charms - did you know that walnuts can be used to hold spells? Because I sure didn't! I also don't work with walnuts, which probably explains that gap in my knowledge, but still! Like with the sachet charms, Bree explains how to do walnut charms broadly, and then gives us delicious recipes to stuff into the walnut.
I'm more familiar with witchballs (yes, yes, I cackled like a twelve-year-old, shut up), and Bree mentioned that there were many methods to create one and outlined the method that she uses. Like with the previous two, this also has a bunch of ideas for what to put in it for what purpose.
We move away from things to stuff into containers and on. Next is a candle charm for attracting "something" to you. That something can vary. Bree mentions that she never substitutes white candles for black candles but that your own experiences with color magic may vary (mostly because color psychology is far from universal, and that's the basis of color magic).
Immediately following that is a candle repulsion charm. I would make a "perfectly balanced, as all things should be" joke, but that meme was beaten to death.
After those candle spells are a bunch of miscellaneous charms that don't follow any particular theme, including one with a COCONUT. A COCONUT. Talk about reusing something!
There are also "quickie charms" (yes I also cackled like a twelve-year-old at this one, shut up) that can be done pretty much at the drop of a hat.
Chapter four is about magical powders and incense blends. I apologize ahead of time for the inevitable drug jokes.
First and foremost in this chapter, Bree explains how to make a magical powder and shares some hints and tricks - including using a coffee bean grinder instead of a mortar and pestle if you don't have the time or ability to grind up their own magic powders.
The first recipe here is everyone's favorite and the most iconic of Bree's powders - Bree's Banishing Powder. I found out about that long before I was aware of who Bree even WAS. There are other recipes for basically anything you can think of (and if you do think of something not listed, hey, there's always that guide on how to make your own).
It's not until the very last page of the chapter (page 124) that Bree talks about loose incense blends that she uses for seasonal solstices. They are very aesthetically on-point for the given season.
Chapter five is the chapter that I truly feared, because I know that people go crazy over essential oils, and this chapter is about magical potions and oils.
We jump right in with washes to cleanse and clean an area or object. It's not until we get to "Not On My Watch" Vinegar where my old nemesis essential oils finally pop up. Luckily, she doesn't say you should eat it, so I breathed a little easier.
She goes more into magical oils and how to make them (again with essential oils on occasion) but specifies that these oils are not for topical or internal use. Thank you, Bree, for not contributing to the "you can safely consume essential oils" scam.
Chapter six is titled, quite simply, "Spells From My Witchbook". Each spell gets one to two pages dedicated to it, and these spells are a nice blend of "fuck you", "begone thot", and protection and finding stuff spells. There's a lot of curses and, as a deeply vengeful person, I love that.
Chapter seven is about correspondences, where we jump in with substitutions for rare and dangerous plants, such as over-harvested plants (like white sage) or poisonous/hallucinogenic plants (belladonna, mandrake root, or yew).
She then lists plants by purpose and marks the ones that are poisonous and ones that you should not use or handle if you are pregnant or around someone who's pregnant. It is a long, long set of lists.
She lists plants for warding in a separate group so that she can list them by event, object, person, or eventuality they're meant to prevent. This is super useful if you're looking for specific correspondences rather than just general protection or banishing. There's then a similar section for plants for baneful magic, listed and warned in a similar way to all the rest.
She also lists correspondences for different colors, which is cool if you're looking to learn Western color magic and psychology.
Overall
Something I noticed throughout the book is that Bree would reference something and then send you to the page it is on so that you don't have to go searching for it or mark it yourself.
There were a few editing errors in the book, but they weren't major enough to take me out of it.
There are so many things I didn't mention that were in this book, especially in the tutorials section.
I love the secular approach to this book, it's precisely the thing I was complaining about lots of beginner witch books lacking.
I appreciate the information on plants as that's a thing that I'm super weak on.
There are tons of things in here that you can go back and reference, even as someone who isn't a beginner at witchcraft.
Official Jasper Review: 10/10, the first-ever full 10 points given to a book that's been run through the Jasper Test
I'm looking forward to picking up your other books, Bree!

As Jasper’s gaze lingered upon the woman before him, he briefly considered how he didn’t recognise her. With his predicament, the bar had become a home away from home for him, and as such he’d gotten to know the staff fairly well. However, it wasn’t a thought Jasper dwelled on for too long - presumably she was just a new member of staff, hired by Eddie.
When she apologised, Jasper shrugged and shook his head. “Eh, don’t worry about it. As far as habits go, it’s not that bad in comparison to some,” he mused, words slurred just a little, though his words still holding a gentlemanly sentiment. No matter the inebriation, Jasper could keep his manners for a lady. With a final gulp, Jasper finished off his dying rye and nodded to her question about the bottle. “Yeah, that’s the one. Hit me up again, double and neat,” he replied, pushing his glass gently across the bar for her.

Jasper had photographed people for long enough to know when they were nervous. The tone of Cash’s laugh told him just what the band member likely felt beneath the surface, and so when asked if there was free reign, Jasper shrugged before nodding. “Yeah, like I’ll be here to guide things in case you’re stuck, but I’m also very flexible. Whatever comes naturally to you, whatever you feel most comfortable with, we’ll do. It’ll be a doddle, promise.” He smiled at Cash in an attempt to reassure him. However, as Cash moved to the closet, Jasper continued watching him until he disappeared. He stayed outside out of respect, waiting with ease for Cash to return. When he did, any sense of ease instantly shot from Jasper as he saw the bare, tattooed and toned torso. His gaze lingered on it, even as he managed to compose himself in a moment by focusing on the choice he’d been given. “I think they’re…” Jasper began, trailing off for a moment as he had to force himself to focus his gaze on the two shirts. “Both good,” he continued. “Maybe we try one and then the other, see what fits best?” Even as he tried looking professional, he couldn’t cease the sudden quick beating of his heart.
@writermuses
"All right, guess we can manage that. Is it like free reign then?" Cash laughed a little nervously. Tangling his fingers through his shaggy dirty blonde hair before walking into the closet, Cashel paced back out. "So you're just going to chat and take pictures while I..." He looked at the man standing in his bedroom then shook his head, clearing his throat and walking back into the closet. There were clothes he typically wore and clothes he typically wore out. He didn't want to look like some kind of layabout, but there was a stylist sent from the band's agency under these exact circumstances. Knowing Blaine, Cash would put money on him sleeping with that person and that being his reason for sending Jasper his way. Taking a few deep breaths, Cash told himself it didn't matter, to focus on the present, and, surprisingly, it helped him relax. Keeping it simple, he came out buttoning dark wash jeans and held up a plain white tee and a black henley. "All right, Boss, you pick." Unfazed by his bare, tattooed and toned torso on display.

Swirling rye at 11am was a surefire sign of despair. For Jasper, not even eighteen months beyond being a war hero in Europe and the Pacific, life had turned against him. No job, no girl and no prospects, with medals all but useless, all he had to rely on was his dwindling savings and charity based upon his looks. Jasper certainly wasn’t above using the latter to his advantage, and yet in the City of Angels, not even those were guaranteed.
However, as Jasper swilled from his rye again, he felt a pair of eyes upon him. He turned instinctively to face them, and saw a feminine figure. A slight yet knowing smile appeared on Jasper’s features, and he regarded them with an initially intrigued gaze. Could his looks have worked once again? As seconds passed though, cynicism crept in and he frowned.
“You want my story, lady?” Jasper began, no qualms making himself heard across the bar. “I’m a war hero, but there’s no war anymore. I’m a photographer, but there’s no jobs to photograph. I’m a rye drinker, and I’ll soon be out of rye.”

@dearxeden
Warm sojourns to exotic destinations had become the norm for Jasper ever since he’d gotten together with Harper. His now wife had introduced him to a world that he’d not thought possible before, although at the heart of it resided Jasper’s genuine love and desire for her, rather than any material concern about money. He’d have loved Harper even if neither of them had a cent to their name, although their present life where they could spend New Years in Maui in a five star resort and where Jasper could sip Lagavulin without a care in the world was naturally one he had absolute contentment with.
Adorned in a tailored, striped t-shirt, navy khaki shorts and boat shoes, Jasper looked every inch at home, his newly acquired beard completing a vibe that made him look more like a handsome mariner than any tourist. However, Jasper also knew he couldn’t compete with how beautiful and breathtaking Harper looked, nor would he want to, the amount of looks she was getting as they sat together in the hotel bar drawing a smug smirk from him each and every time.
“Darling, I was thinking after midnight…” Jasper began, just finishing a sip of the scotch, his huskier tone barely above a whisper. “That we might retire early to our suite? I know they’ll all be celebrating down here, but your birthday is far more important than any New Year celebration… and besides, I don’t wanna waste any time in worshipping and thanking my wife on her most important day.” Jasper pulled back to meet her gaze after his playful proposition, eyes alight with mischief and a daring smirk upon his lips.

The thought of Landry Senior turning up with a shotgun sent a chill briefly jolting through Jasper. However, rather than let fear take hold, he simply smiled and shrugged. “There’s a risk, sure. But I just can’t see either of ‘em ever thinking to come this deep into a city they despise. And, it won’t even enter their heads that we could be slumming it down by the docks, with the workers and sailors. They’d never think artsy gays like us would go so far.”
Between the two of them, Jasper tended towards being the glass half full type. He was a dreamer, the kind who loved nature and art, fuelling his passion for photography that had also become his career. Of course, it had also made him the black sheep of the Breeland’s, and in a way had helped lead him into the arms of Luke. The two complimented each other no matter what, and so where Luke was the pragmatic realist in their tense situation, Jasper was the ambitious idealist.
When Luke smiled back at him, Jasper beamed, and not just because Luke had given him exactly what he’d asked for. He smiled because it always made him happy to see his lover smile. Luke’s subsequent words about how they felt for each other proved to be the cherry on top, stretching Jasper’s grin to the corners of his mouth even as his lover warned again about being caught.
Taking the Jameson bottle from him, Jasper took a swig of the harsh but fine liquor before meeting Luke’s gaze and saying “This is real life. It’s our life. I know we’ve got a few more days before we can get there, but it’s our life now.”

Jasper Breeland - 29, bisexual, photojournalist
Despite not even having hit the age of thirty, Jasper Breeland was quite the old fashioned type. He liked the hallmarks of a bygone era, ranging from black and white movies through to drinking whiskey at long business lunches. As such, a glass of rye wasn’t too far from his hand as he sat in the restaurant, the drink being characteristic for him whenever he went out to lunch or dinner. The faint scent of cigarette smoke also filtered around Jasper as he sat, the establishment known amongst its exclusive clientele for ignoring certain public health orders like smoking bans. All in all, it was one of the closest places you could visit to feel like you were in Old Hollywood.
“In an age where everyone can take a nude on their phone, you’ve gotta think outside the box when it comes to doing a photoshoot that grabs attention these days...” Jasper began, leaning back in his chair slightly as he swirled the rye and ice around in his glass. “Nude photoshoots can still grab attention, don’t get me wrong, but they’ve gotta be done in a new or an interesting way. Location, props, the story behind it, plenty of ways you can do this kind of shoot and stand out from your average Kardashian shot,” he added then, the traces of a smirk gracing his lips as he eyed the woman before him up and down briefly.
Jasper leaned forward then, taking a brief sip of rye whilst the smirk still remained upon his features as he then mused “Gotta say though, it intrigues me... why now for a photoshoot like this? And why this sort of shoot in particular?”

When Natalie mentioned how he’d wounded her by mentioning her in the same sentence as a Kardashian, Jasper grinned and then chuckled. “I’d never dream of comparing you to them, I was just making the point that your shots won’t look anywhere near like theirs when I’m behind the camera,” he replied smoothly, his charm and ease in conversation being one of the key reasons why clients usually always felt comfortable working with him on any number of risque or provocative shoots.
Therefore, as Natalie began telling him about the scandals and controversies of hers that Jasper already knew about, the photographer nodded respectfully as she continued talking. He equally didn’t interrupt her and instead took in every word that she said, thinking at the same time how he might be able to help her with the photoshoot given what she was saying. When Natalie then finished by saying he could have anything his photorealistic heart desired, Jasper grinned again and laughed once more.
“Well, that’s quite the offer...” Jasper began, taking another drag of his cigarette before continuing speaking. “I think we’re both on the same page about this shoot needing to make an impact and stand out from the crowd without being tacky at the same time... so, based on that, I think the next question is what limits do you have? What don’t you wanna show or do?”

When he’d embarked on his tour of America, to photograph the “real people” of the “forgotten places” across the land, Jasper had expected to encounter some surprising situations… but even then, strip poker in the back of a biker bar would never have crossed his mind. And yet, surprise didn’t come into his thoughts as he looked back over at Kara, his final opponent and undoubtedly the most tantalising of all those Jasper had played with that night. She met his gaze with a sparkle in her eyes, a coy smile following just before she spoke. Her taunting words prompted Jasper to laugh, and he fired back, “What’s that old phrase? Pride comes before a fall?” It was hollow talk, however. He knew from his hand that he was certain to lose, and so rather than prolong that process, Jasper laid his cards down, sealing his fate. He laughed as he did so, his gaze flicking to Kara for her reaction. He let her have her moment before musing, “Ah well, that’s that. Should’ve worn more clothes tonight… or been better at poker.”

muse: kara stone ( mid to late twenties ) more info here
kara and y/m are the last two left at strip poker. they're both down to their last bit of clothing, bar and panties, etc. kara has just put her hand down, showing her cards and is now waiting to see y/m's hand to reveal who has to strip! basically who has to strip is up to you eheh!
connection ideas: members of her father's motorcycle club, friends / best friend, strangers, exes, fwbs, etc. anything!
Kara's heart raced as she set down her cards, anticipation filling her veins, eyes locked on them as she awaited the reveal. Her lips pulled back in a slight smirk, eyes glancing up at them, then back down to the hand of cards before them. Both of them were about as undressed as they could be before they'd start showing more than just their underwear. Still, she was determined as ever to keep her cunning nature about her, to make sure that she didn't let her guard down in any way shape or form. "Alright, it's all up to you now, sweetheart. We both know you're shit at bluffing, so there's no way I'm losing. So come on, lay 'em down," she taunted with a grin, biting down on the knuckle of her pointer finger teasingly. "Don't keep me waiting, I want to see you have to strip again."
