Ekubo Week Day 1 - Friendship
(Mob & Dimple, word count: 1k)
So far, Dimple’s Plan G for Becoming God and Ruling Over Humanity was not paying off as much as he would like.
Thinking back, he shouldn’t have expected anything different. Sure, Kageyama Shigeo was a naive doormat, and his tolerance for Dimple’s presence was shockingly high. But Dimple had seen firsthand how stubborn the kid could be when he wanted. He’d exorcised him for the crime of calling him a loser one too many times, after all.
But the lack of ambition was really starting to get on Dimple’s nerves.
“You’re seriously gonna spend your break in the classroom?” Dimple demanded as Shigeo unpacked his boxed lunch. “You won’t get any better at social skills like this, you know.”
Shigeo shrugged. The gesture was the closest thing to a response that Dimple could expect from Shigeo at school. A shrug was actually a step up from the blank stares Shigeo usually gave him.
“You could go find that Tsubomi girl,” Dimple continued, planting himself on top of Shigeo’s lunch box. “Not talk to her, you’re not ready for that yet. But you could eat in the same area, at least. Then, you can listen to her conversations with her friends-“ Shigeo pushed him with a light burst of power and he rolled off the desk, returning to Shigeo’s eye level, “-and maybe you’ll learn something about her personality. Observing people is a great way to understand them better.”
Shigeo glared at him. Or it seemed like he might be glaring. The kid’s facial expressions were subtle as hell. But Dimple wouldn’t let that hold him back. He was an expert on manipulating humans to serve him, and Shigeo was no different from any other small-minded human.
“Okay, so are you gonna talk to that classmate of yours? The camera one? She’s been trying to get your attention all day. She probably wants to know about the power you used to destroy me. This could be your shot at popularity, Shigeo! She’s a journalist! Even amateur press can make a big difference in publicizing your brand.”
Dimple had snuck in to countless seminars on public relations and marketing. If Shigeo showed any interest, he could get him a thousand Twitter followers in a day. But the kid didn’t even have a smartphone. He’d have to look into getting Shigeo a tablet or something.
For now, Shigeo was staring right through Dimple as he ate his lunch. Dimple had watched Shigeo’s mother pack the lunch that morning. Besides the rice, pork and greens, there was a single umeboshi that Shigeo seemed to be saving for last.
When was the last time Dimple had eaten human food? Some kind of unidentifiable emotion rose up in him as he watched Shigeo eat his mother’s cooking.
“Hey. Shigeo.” Dimple pointed at the lone umeboshi. “Can I have that?”
Shigeo kept staring right through him. A few grains of rice fell from his chopsticks onto his desk. He sweeped them up with a napkin, not looking at Dimple.
A flash of irritation made Dimple’s form waver slightly. “It’s rude to ignore people, Shigeo.” He folded his arms. “Come on, it’s just an umeboshi. Give it to me already.”
Shigeo looked at him… and started packing away his lunch box, the uneaten umeboshi still inside. Dimple scowled. “Oh, you’re brutal, aren’t you,” he said. Shigeo’s lips quirked in amusement. The high class evil spirit Dimple sunk onto the desk and sulked for the rest of the lunch period.
–––
Later that day, Shigeo walked home, still a little dizzy from his club activities. Why the kid bothered trying to develop muscles when he could do anything effortlessly with psychic power, Dimple had no idea. Maybe he’d get through to him one day.
They passed by a tiny park, just a few benches and a swing set. To Dimple’s surprise, Shigeo sat on one of the benches. He started rummaging through his bag.
“Hey, what’s the deal?” Dimple asked. “You gonna eat that umeboshi now, just to torment me? You’d make a hell of an evil spirit.”
Shigeo pulled out the lunch box and unearthed the umeboshi. “Here,” he said. “You can eat it now.”
Something inside Dimple clenched. “Wh-seriously? Why didn’t you give it over before?”
“The teacher was in the classroom. I thought he might be scared if he saw a floating umeboshi.” Shigeo stared at Dimple, as if to say, ‘wasn’t that obvious?’
Dimple snatched up the umeboshi. He took a moment to appreciate the lingering emotional energy radiating from the food, then swallowed it whole. He felt… warm.
…and salty. “Aghk- that’s strong!” he spluttered. “You really eat this?”
Shigeo shrugged, putting his lunch box away again. “I like extra salty things,” he said. Then, “I didn’t know evil spirits could eat.”
“Normally, we only eat curses and other spirits,” Dimple explained. “But we can eat other things if they have psychic properties. Home cooked food usually does, and food offered at shrines.” He phased through a puddle on the ground, hoping to alleviate the salty taste. Shigeo watched him with vague interest.
“…I’m sorry for ignoring you,” Shigeo said quietly. “I don’t like being ignored either… it must have been frustrating.”
Dimple froze. He felt oddly light for some reason. “Oh, forget about that!” he laughed, not meeting Shigeo’s eyes. “You gotta keep up appearances, I get it.”
Going by Shigeo’s blank look, he wasn’t comforted by this. “…I’ll ask my mom to pack an extra one,” he said, continuing on the path towards his home. “You know. As long as I don’t have to exorcise you.”
“Hey, don’t worry about that! I’ll be good as gold!” Dimple hurried to resume his hover over Shigeo’s shoulder as he walked home. “You won’t find a more conscientious evil spirit anywhere! You know, as long as you keep the treats coming.”
…Did he imagine it, or did Shigeo just… smile? “Wow… I didn’t know evil spirits could be domesticated.”
Never mind. Clearly, this kid was completely heartless.

I've gone through all the submissions!
Submissions: 105 (a few of which submitted multiple characters)
Re-submissions to add more detail: 2
Characters submitted: 92
Characters nobody submitted who are being included because I think they should be included (mostly because I would have submitted them if someone else was running the bracket): ...um...18
Most-submitted character: Eri, My Hero Academia (4)
Most-submitted character I had not previously heard of: Naru Kotoishi, Barakamon
Franchise with the most entries: Pretty Cure (9)
Individual anime with the most entries: The Case Study of Vanitas (4)
Characters named "Maria": 2
Dragons: 4.5 (not all from Fire Emblem)
Still a lot of stuff to do before I start posting polls, not the least of which being how to efficiently run a double-elimination bracket with 110 members. (I guess I could track down 18 anime kids to make it an even power of 2, but then I'd be running a poll that's ~¼ characters chosen entirely by me, which feels kinda ridiculous.) But I figured I should let people know how things are going.
Full list of characters in the bracket below the cut.
The following list is in alphabetical order. For characters with both personal and family names, I alphabetized by family names. (Except when I mistook which name was which, because the internet cannot decide whether to use Japanese name order or European name order, which isn't a problem except when it makes people like me worry about whether they're naming characters wrong.)

hi @eshithepetty. hope you don't mind if i join you again... i have words about this boy.
ritsu also wears the Smart™ label. this automatically makes him unrelatable or intimidating or offputting to a great many people.
i don't love it either, but that's often true IRL too; it's why the protagonists of most films and TV series aren't 'geniuses' or bookish, and why so-called nerds were subject to so much cultural stigma and bullying (at least in the US) until relatively recently. no one likes feeling stupid or inadequate by comparison.
trauma or mental illness or crippling neurodivergence in kids labeled as gifted often isn't taken seriously either.
i hate to say it, but the envy-laced 'you're smart so you should be able to figure <insert any problem, really, here> out' crap some adults and peers fill gifted kids' heads with from childhood means they can end up struggling alone with their problems. sometimes they internalize the voices who tell them such things and beat themselves bloody in their own mental back alleys for... not being able to just THINK their way out of shit.
*sighs*
so here we have ritsu, who almost died at his brother's unaware hand. who has NO IDEA what set the boy off and basically lives in terror, forever waiting for the other shoe to drop. who dearly loves his brother still but cannot trust him. who subsumes all of this into a classic fawn-fight response of resentment and bullying and solicitousness sealed with a stepford smile; ritsu's resentment is so strong it bends his brother's spoons at dinner.
but wrap all that emotional turmoil up in a very real, skillfully-drawn package of 'people keep praising me to the skies for shit that comes easily to me and i'm not comfortable with this' AND increasing awareness of the pressure -- societal, familial, and otherwise -- that being Smart™ entails? (because his brother is such a disappointment to her and she's vocal about it, ritsu knows he carries his mother's hopes and dreams for both her sons. he doesn't want this, either.)
that renders his pain invisible... or maybe just not worth examining? to some watchers.
for that reason alone, ritsu kageyama is indeed the most misunderstood character in this story. but i don't think there's no support in canon for his over-the-top overprotectiveness of shigeo.
his first impulse when he happens across high-schoolers trying to mug his older brother is attempted murder by strangulation. if ekubo can come up with a nonviolent solution, but not ritsu...?
he starts off the big cleanup arc with a plan to rid salt middle school of delinquents to make the place more comfortable for shigeo after grossly misreading onigawara's shouty apology to him. granted, kamuro twisted his plan into something far nastier, but the cleanup was his idea (this is clearer in the manga, IMHO).
he's so vehement about this overprotectiveness because he's trying to ward off anything that might make his brother explode; it's partially out of a sense of self-preservation.
there's also sufficient canonical evidence for his massive resentment outright hatred grudging tolerance of reigen:
the manga contains at least one omake in which he subs for shigeo at spirits and such and actively tries to get the man injured. for the lulz.
the anime addresses this animosity by having reigen be the only person he unleashes all that mental snark on. at this point in the story, he does indeed hate reigen with a seething passion for holding that much of shigeo's admiration and for taking advantage of him; it does mellow out some in subsequent seasons.
i've said before that ONE was only hinting at the darkness swirling round inside ritsu. those who describe him as 'edgy' or 'emo' for no reason irk the shit out of me too.
with all the above said: the big cleanup arc could have used a little more screentime, and i felt that way as an anime-only. unlike those who don't like this arc, i didn't find ritsu's slide into infamy and despair jarring, exactly; he just didn't feel established quite enough as a character yet for me. the arc had to do double duty as a second establishment of character and character development for him, and it doesn't begin to justify his choices until later. another half an episode would have done it, i think.
i need to rewatch this arc... my few criticisms of it may feel like nitpicks after a closer look. thanks for giving me a great excuse to, OP!
Having ritsu feelings today
The fandom does him so dirty 😔
Like he doesn't have that much fan content and the content he does get is often micharacterized/flanderized, too. I feel like...
People often make him too angry and emo and overprotective, usually because they take those qualities as surface level funnies. Like hes definitely a little hater to an extent, but you dont get itttht hes not just edgy, he has layers, and hes not just mean to everyone all the time, hes actually quite polite towards people a lot of the time because he grew up as the smart good kid, and I hate HATE how overprotective they often make him of mob, like, hes certainly protective to an extent, and its an important part of him because its literally part of his issues™, but people take it too far, especially in ship fics, like - for example, its apparent in how they make him hate teru for no reason so often, even though!! That literally has no canon evidence!!! Like he even looks up to teru in canon a tiny bit i feel like! And of course once they get to know each other better theres a good chance hell clash with teru to an extent, because terus just extra and ridiculous and ritsu doesnt bode with people like that too well (as evidenced by reigen), and actually, on topic of reigen, he definitely is wary of him, but like 😭 calm down, he doesn't actually want to kill reigen, hes not that big of a hater. But what i find most disappointing is how many people just. Dont get him. Like ive heard so many people say that they dont understand the big clean up arc or that ritsu was just being edgy for no reason or that they even dislike that arc and im....
hghrhrg i am beating my pillow i love that arc, i love young characters struggling to understand their feelings, i love traumatised characters taking out their bottled feelings in unhealthy and messy ways, i love characters who get it wrong, i love characters who put themselves into narratives of good and evil to make their life make sense, i love characters who only slip deeper and deeper into despair until they are pulled back, i love the arc for how well paced it is and how well it transitioned from one story beat to the next and how gradually it revealed more about the characters and the world and its still one of my favorite arcs ever and the one i think the anime did the most justice like I LOVE YOU BIG CLEAN UP ARC AND I LOVE YOU RITSU!!!!!
sorry

Welcome, Ladies and Gentlemen, to Stats Equalized!
The show that equalizes strength, durability, and speed to see who would win in a battle of pure versatility and skill.
This Episode....
Shigeo Kageyama vs Steven Universe!
Rules:
Base Forms Equalized.
100% Mob and Pink Mode Steven Equalized.
???% Mob and Gem Steven Equalized.
Both have prior knowledge of the other's general power set.
Scenario:
Mob and his class are going on a field trio to America, with Reigen coming along as a chaperone (mainly to try selling his business to other tourists). Their most recent stop is Beach City, where the Fitness Club plays volleyball with the rubies, the Telepathy Club argues with Ronaldo, and Reigen sells Greg a "spirit removing" back massage while he gets the bus washed. Everyone is having a good time.
That is, until one of the rubies accidentally cracks their gem. Steven makes a watermelon Steven to help even out the team's numbers. When one of the Fitness Club members accidentally beans Steven in the head with the ball, the Watermelon Stevens attack to defend their master. Mob stops the creature with his telekinesis and, misreading the situation, lectures Steven for using his powers to hurt others. Before Steven can explain, other Watermelon Stevens that Steven had doing other tasks attack on his behalf. Both Mob and Steven resign themselves to a fight, convinced that the other won't stop escalating.
Analysis: Steven
Countless years ago, long before the advent of human history, the small, insignificant planet of Earth was discovered by an alien race known as the Gems. The Homeworld Empire would have mercilessly sucked the planet dry, if it were not for the second thoughts of their leader Pink Diamond. Unable to convince her fellow matriarchs of the error of their ways, Pink instead waged a war against herself using the pseudonym Rose Quartz.
This…. is not her story.
This is the story of the son she left behind. This is the story of Steven Quartz Universe.
Growing up mostly unaware of his now dead mother’s dark past, Steven was raised by his homeless father Greg Universe and trained by the three remaining Crystal Gems Amethyst, Garnet, and Pearl. In his youth he’d mostly lazily hang around Beach City and go on missions to subdue Corrupted Gems, or Gems who were forcibly turned into monsters by the Diamonds corruption blast as the fled Earth. However, after Steven would inadvertently lead Homeworld back to Earth, the young boy would be forced to confront the lies his mother left behind and stand against the Homeworld Empire.
Thankfully, Steven develops a wide plethora of powers abd abilities to protect his friends and family. Inheriting all the powers of his mother, Steven can create a pink shield that can manifest in a variety of different ways. It can appear as a small frisbe and a body encompassing bubble, even growing spikes to ward off aggressive adversaries. He can also bubble his fists to increase their punching power. These shields are made if hard light, much like a Gem’s physical body is, which would likely explain how customizable they are.
Similarly, he can summon bubbles to contain objects, sending them home for later use. It should be noted that, while this has a sealing affect on poofed gems (that’s what it’s called when a gem’s physical form is temporarily destroyed), organic beings seem unaffected by it and can break free of these bubbles with ease.
In regards to his movement options, Steven can levitate, controlling the speed at which he falls to the ground in a manner basically synonymous with flight, even being capable of halting his own momentum.
His half gem physiology also grants him a rather bizarre biology. For example, he cam voluntarily shapeshift his own body, even influencing his own age, though this appears to be the one ability he has yet to truly master, as it is often subconsciously influenced by his own image of himself and can easily spiral wildly out of control. His, uh, body fluids also seem to be similarly affected. Don’t worry, it’s not as gross as it sounds.
For example, his spit csn heal the injuries of others, healing Connie’s eye sight and fixing Lapis’s broken gemstone. His tears, meanwhile, can resurrect dead animals and people as unaging pink “zombies” with special powers, such as hair that contains a pocket dimension and a voice that can create portals. The most bizarre trait of his, erm, fluids, is his ability to make plants sentient by licking their seeds, creating an army of Watermelon Stevens fiercely loyal to and protective of him. In great enough numbers, these creations can overpower the Crystal Gems and even threaten the dangerous fusion Malachite with just stone age era technology.
Plus, when knocked out, he can telepathically communicate with and even possess other beings from astronomical distances away. He can even communicate with the Diamonds, despite their diamond auras initially warding him off. Being half diamond himself, Steven should have a similar aura and, thus, similar resistance. Hell, given his aura outright overpowered theirs, his resistance should be stronger.
He can fuse with other Gems to become stronger and, uniquely, can fuse with humans. In fact, Steven can do a lot of things that Gems can’t. His half human biology grants him an immunity to weapons designed specifically to counter gems, causing them to merely harm him at worst or harmlessly tickle him at best. But, this resistance has limits as certain weapons like the Rejuvenator can nullify his powers. Still, he doesn't need to resist an attack to deal with it, as his regeneration is so good that he can heal from broken bones and cracked skulls so fast that he never even notices them.
Similarly, Steven is supremely tough and fast, capable of moving fast enough to appear as a blur in eyes of normal humans long before he mastered his powers. As a teenager, he can fight some of the toughest of the Crystal Gems foes, such as Spinel and Jssper, single handedly and fight them blow for blow. This is impressive on both a skill and a strength front, as both Jasper and Spinel have proven themselves able to defeat the toughest members of the Crystal Gems on occasion, though not without their best weapons available. Keep in mind, the Crystal Gems have been alive for centuries and were known to take down entire battalions during the war on their own. On the strength front, it’s impressive because of what it would mean Steven scales to.
Both Jasper and Spinel have fought Garnet, someone capable of turning sand into glass with the force of her blows and cleaving mountains in half. Most impressively, Garnet could tear apart Peridot’s escape pod, which survived getting blasted down to Earth from orbit at massive speeds.
Steven is, by the end of the series, definitively one of Garnet’s equals, seeing how he can fight opponents on a similar scale to her. Even at the age of 13, he was able to contend with Bismuth, evenly while actively trying to avoid hurting her.
But all this shies away from the true power Steven wields.
With Steven’s Pink Mode transformations, Steven can channel his full Diamond potential, going from competing with Jasper to actively stomping her. What’s more, if Steven is seperated from his gem, any buffer between him and his full power is completely removed.
The now emotionless and remorseless Gem Steven is all of Steven’s power without an ounce of his humanity or restraint. He's capable of nearly blowing Yellow, Blue, and White Diamond away just by screaming and can effortlessly deflect attacks from all three. This is especially impressive when you consider the Diamonds are the strongest gems in existence, capable of obliterating countries with their combined power.
However, this form runs the serious risk of killing Steven’s human half, so it’s unlikely he’ll use it willingly. In fact, Steven is highly unlikely to use his most dangerous powers in combat.
Steven’s greatest strength, as well as his greatest weakness, is his empathy. He’ll always sacrifice his physical and mental health to protect others, which has caused him series problems. This tendency, plus his constant exposure to life threatening trauma, as caused him to develop a severe case of PTSD, which can make his powers go haywire of not properly checked in. At it’s worst, it can even forcibly transform him into a giant unstoppable monster.
But, despite all his weaknesses, Steven managed to save Earth and Homeworld. He succeeded where his mother failed and nade tge Diamonds change their minds. Because he’s not his mother. He’s more. He’s Steven Quartz Universe.
Analysis: Mob
Imagine a world full of supernatural creatures. Whether they be undead spirits from beyond this mortal coil or mythical legends brought to life, intangible ghosts and demons live among us, haunting our world from just out of sight. Who are you gonna call?
Reigen Arataka! ....So that he can call in his own far more capable side kick.
Shigeo "Mob" Kageyama is by all appearances your ordinary Japanese High Schooler. That's because he is. He also happens to be the single most power psychic in the entire world. These facts do not contradict. As a matter of fact, Shigeo acts like he's unaware of how grandiose in scale his powers truly are. Not that he's oblivious to how powerful he is, but he simply doesn't believe that they make him inherently special.
This was the furst lesson that his brilliant sensei, Reigen Arataka instilled in him. Mob's powers left him ostracized from the rest of his friends, and because no one else in his family had similar powers, Mob was crushed by an ever-present feeling of loneliness. Until he met someone whom he believed to have the same gifts he did. Reigen was a dream come true to the lost and lonely Mob, as he finally felt less alone in the world upon hearing Reigen's guidance and falling under his wing. While Reigen turned out to not be psychic at all, he would still go out of his way to guide Mob as best he could and instill in the boy a strong moral conscience.
And good thing to, because if Mob wanted to, there is absolutely nothing that could stop him from destroying the world. Mob possesses many of the same powers as most psychics in his world. Firstly, he can see and interact with things that ordinary people cannot, which is what allows him to see the aura of other psychics as well as see ghosts. Once he's spotted a spirit, Mob just has to reach out his hand to erase them from existence entirely, wiping them so thoroughly that not even their atoms survive. As a matter of fact, Psychics in general are a hard counter to spirits, as they resist being unwillingly possessed by default and can remove supernatural curses. Hell, if the situation requires, Mob can leave his body and become a ghost himself, granting him all the powers of a spirit such as regeneration, Intangibility, and possession.
Moreover, he possesses remarkably powerful telekinesis even by psychic standards, which he can use to fly, create explosions from a distance, protect his body with shields, and even ragdoll cars with ease.
You'd think with that much power, Mob would be all the rage at school. Though, truthfully, he's not. This might be partially because Mob's psychic power doesn't translate to physical strength. While his mind can rip you to shreds, his fists would just awkwardly slap against you and he has to go through intense training to even reach the top 100 in gym class. On top of that, Mob refuses to use his powers to solve his mundane problems, both because he feels that's unfair and because he heavily limits his own power.
Mob most of the time only uses a fraction of his full power. Due to an incident early in his life where he accidentally gravely injured his brother, Mob is somewhat terrified of his own full potential, so he never uses it... unless he's forced to.
If he's put underneath enough emotional distress, Mob reaches his breaking point, exploding into a form of raw emotion and power. Regardless of what emotion is powering it, 100% Mob packs a serious punch, as he's now capable of tossing around cities, throwing people into orbit, and even crushing the leader of CLAW, who had, up until then, been the most powerful psychic in the world.
Even when Mob is barely even controlling himself, he still remains a remarkably brilliant fighter. He's intelligent enough to copy the abilities of other psychics after seeing them in action only once, such as when he learned to manipulate plants. Moreover, he can actively choose to heal from wounds such as broken arms, create massive clouds of smoke, and even absorb the powers of other espers to bolster himself. He's practically unstoppable.
Of course, that might be the peak of what Mob's capable of, but Shigeo himself is capable of much, much more.
If Mob gets knocked unconscious in an especially dangerous situation, then ???% wakes up. Or, as he prefers to be called, Shigeo Kageyama.
Mob nearly killing his brother traumatized him so much that he seems to have developed a form of Dissociative Identity Disorder. Shigeo is the Alter that formed as a result and he's effectively all of Mob's potential power without any of his usual restraint. Shigeo will work in Mob's best interests with extreme prejudice, whether that means throwing his opponent into the atmosphere, or completely obliterating an army of thousands of souls. Shigeo is the most powerful being in the Mob Psycho universe, completely eclipsing 100% Mob and even defeating the most powerful spirit in history.
Shigeo has all of Mob's powers to a far greater extent, with an added bonus. Shigeo sucks the energy out of everything around him. Ranging from his opponent's psychic energy to the energy in the air itself, Shigeo devours it all. He is a giant humanoid void of pure psychic power.
Having said that, he's no Mr. Hyde. While he is utterly ruthless in protecting Mob, even against his own friends, and is completely indifferent to his footsteps creating earthquakes, he isn't malicious. For instance, while utterly brutalized gang leader Teruki Hanazawa, stripping him naked, destroying his school, and throwing him into space, he didn't kill Teru despite the fact that he very easily could have. He's not an evil part of Mob, but he is still a part of him. A part that Mob has been supressing all his life, for better and worse.
What Mob failed to understand for most of his life is that he only really understood half of Reigen's lesson. Mob's powers aren't inherently special and they aren't something to lord over others, but they're also a part of him that can't be run from. They're like knives in a way... or maybe a chainsaw in Shigeo's case. Just because they can't be pointed at people doesn't mean you can't use them to cook or build a house.

Throwdown Breakdown:
Alright, this matchup has a lot of moving parts, which is why it might not be obvious that this is one-sided until you break it down.
Let's get the obvious out of the way, Steven is far and away much better at hand to hand combat. Mob in character would never fight up close and personal, he predominantly relies on his psychic powers and telekinesis to deal with his foes. If Steven gets in close, he takes this pretty handily.
The issue there is that, as far as range in concerned, Mob has everything Steven has and then some. Telekinesis would throw any long range attacks Steven could try back at him while Mob's flight outpaces Steven's pseudo gravity powers considerably. Mob has better plant manipulation, with his giant plant tendrils easily shutting down Steven's watermelon army. While Steven's shields are much more versatile than Mob's and could conceivably trap him, that's also the only reliable win condition Steven has for one big reason...
Namely, that if Steven does ultilize his hand to hand advantage, he's going to knock Mob out... and unleash ???% in the process. From then on, Gem Steven vs Shigeo is going to be the exact same fight dynamic, but with the added bonus of completely leveling Beach City while Shigeo just uses his opponent like a battery the whole time.
Steven's only win condition is trapping Mob in a ball so tightly that he can't move at all and even then, Mob can keep fighting with telekinesis anyways... only now he can throw himself at Steven like big ping pong ball. Steven and Mob share a lot of the same powers... but Mob's are just better suited for shutting Steven down. Mob's fought plenty of close quarters heavyweights like Steven but Steven's never fought anyone quite like Shigeo Kageyama... or Mob.
This Month's Winner is...

MP100 OVA Drama CD Track 6 - Episode 5: Reigen’s Will - English Translation
The MP100 OVA Drama CD, titled “The first spirits and such company trip; The other side of a journey that mends the heart and heals the soul and such” comes with the blu-ray/DVD, and is officially described as a compilation of 1) conversations from the day before the OVA itself & 2) exchanges that aren’t depicted in the OVA. More info here!
Here’s the translation of the sixth track, “Episode 5: Reigen’s Will”!
Characters: Reigen, Serizawa
You can listen to this track from the masterlist!
-
REIGEN [As Narrator]
This fifth story takes place within the looping train, when I’d resigned myself to the fact that I was going to die.
[BGM: train moving]
[SFX: scratching into floor with screwdriver]
REIGEN
“Reigen… Arataka… was here.” Damn it, my vision’s going… as if Serizawa’s screwdriver would turn out handy after all, for something like this...
[SFX: dropping screwdriver, pained inhale]
That Serizawa… where did he go? It’s been a week since he vanished.
[SFX: a few pained deep breaths, flipping of page]
“Trip Guidebook”, huh… when I was making this, I really didn’t think this kind of situation would happen, did I…
[SFX: flipping of pages, pained exhale]
“Fun memos”... I need to tell my mother and those guys what they should do after I die… my final job.
[SFX: Pen click; pained exhale, begins writing]
“Father, mother,
I’m so sorry that it’s come to this. Honestly, I didn’t think this would ever happen, so I apologise. If I think about it, after I left my job, I was nothing but a nuisance and a worry to you both, and I’m sorry that I couldn’t give you the love and respect required of me.
However, through the office I work at now, I’ve obtained many things. Above all, I was blessed when it comes to my employees. At the office I run, I have an employee named Kageyama Shigeo - I want to give ownership of the business to him. The formalities of that will take time and labour, but I’ll leave that in your hands…
Mob, I’m a nuisance to you as well now like this, aren’t I? But. Even without me, I want you, together with Serizawa, Ritsu and Hanazawa, to continue to make the office greater…
If all of you work together, then even without me, surely, you’ll be able to manage fine.
Do your best, and make S&S the greatest consultation office in the world for me.
If it’s you guys, you can definitely do-”
[SFX: pen drop, Reigen collapses, voice as if about to cry]
[BGM: creepy piano that gets louder and louder as he continues]
Damn it… seriously, damn it! Why am I the only one suffering…? Even when I was in primary school, playing games with everyone, whenever it’d be my turn I’d get skipped over… I’d never recover from my colds… when it comes down to it, I just stood out as someone buggy…
What was it called, that game...
That’s right… “Ninja Khaiden”[1]. How nostalgic…
I frantically memorised that spell, that’d let you start the game off in the strongest position possible... [2] I can recite it even now.
Na-n-ta-ko-ro, ko-cchi-to-ru.
Eh….huh? What was it?
Na-n-ta-ko-ro, ko-cchi-to-ro...no-ro-ma-n...
Eh… wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong. That’s not it.
Na-n-ta-ko-ro, ko-cchi-ko-ro?
What? Seriously, what was it... I was always able to recall it.
I definitely have it down as far as “tsu-ku-ki-na”...
Damn it, seriously, what was it?
Just a little more...
Uh, If I remember correctly… Um...
Ah, seriously!? What was it!?
To be in the strongest position poss-!
[SFX: Train door opening]
SERIZAWA
Ah, amazing! The landlady made onigiri with some bodai butterfish rice-
REIGEN
Serizawa-san! Where the hell did you go? I was looking for you!
REIGEN [as Narrator]
And like that, somehow or another… I survived. I’ll likely not forget the taste of that onigiri for as long as I live. And even now… I can’t remember that spell.
--
And here’s the subbed audio! Thank you @mobu-time!

TN: Goodness this was hard to translate. It’s SO difficult to understand what he’s saying because his speech is very slurred from… y’know, dying. I’m a bit iffy on the “tsu-ku-ki-na” bit but the rest is fine, I BELIEVE, because I ended up spending hours on this one translation mxcvn.
[1] This is a play on the Japanese title of Ninja Gaiden (a famicom/NES game) which is ‘ninjaryuukenden’ (lit. Ninja dragon sword story). Clearly in the Mob universe it’s called ‘ninjaryuumaden’ instead (Ninja dragon magic story). I don’t have enough brains to translate such a thing, pls take “Ninja Khaiden” instead mncvbcbcnvb
[2] Spell, as in, a video game cheatcode

Aubade is a great fic; too bad it’s possibly dead.
Been a while since I did a long long babble on a fic I like, and lately, I’ve been rereading a few fics to fuel my entertainment. I low key notice how rare it is to find a multi-chaptered fic for Ritshou that doesn’t have Terumob as main, which is really funky honestly.
I talked about Aubade once, in my list of incomplete fanfics I missed back in like February. But it’s so good, I’m gonna make a long post about it lmao.
Even though this fic has literally taken the number one ranking in my favorites list, it only took today for me to bookmark it in my ao3 (mostly because I’ve been waiting it for it to be completed before doing so.)
And generally, anything that I bookmark on ao3 is something I’ve cried about at least once, whether it’s because of the story or because I love the story too much. So anyways,
Aubade by Ravenesta is a M rated Ritshou fic centered around Ritsu, who moves in with Shou after Shou declared he was going to stay in Japan for good.
They buy an apartment together near Ritsu’s university and go on a shopping spree in IKEA for furniture and such, which is as chaotic as it doesn’t sound. The tension between them is real and it’s there, so much so you just want them to get together already sometimes.
I’ve read this fic for a total of 4 times, and I will keep rereading it until the day I die. If you asked me what would come to mind if I thought about Ritshou, it would be the fic’s summary;
My dove, my doe, I love you so I cannot, will not, let you go
Ritsu and Shou have been orbiting around each other ever since they were thirteen years old. Really, something like this was inevitable.
It’s so simple and sweet, and somehow, without fail, every time this summary (specifically the poem) comes to mind, I would get teary eyed. Even now I’m getting :’( over the poem, just because it literally speaks Ritshou to me.
The fic starts off with Ritsu heading back home by train to Seasoning City during his summer break from college in Grain City. It’s written in a way where it’s very easy for you to visualize the scenario of Ritsu waiting for the train to come while holding a cup of cheap coffee.
It’s realistically detailed too, going as far as to include little quirks about Ritsu and the people around him (stranger or not).
Both Shou and Shigeo gets introduced during a phone texting scene, where you can easily tell their personality was conveyed right through the way they message Ritsu. Shigeo adds little face emoticons with caring and sweet messages, and Shou shortens his words to ‘u’ and ‘ur’ with chaotic spacings between words and many exclamation marks.
Even Ritsu has his own way of messaging, always adding punctuation to his sentences.
Later on, after Ritsu arrives in Seasoning City, he’s picked up by Shigeo and Teru, who are already a couple in this fic, and you can tell how much Ritsu misses his home.
Teru is such a beautiful mess in this fic, everything about him is dramatic and overtop, going from his haircut to his little diet habits, and he’s still playful with Ritsu. The ‘Little Brother’ nickname will never go away.
(Also, at some point, Ritsu makes a face immaturely after seeing Shigeo drop a kiss on Teru’s head and I think that was pretty funny)
(Also also, they all call Reigen ‘Dad’. Which is hecking adorable, but it did confuse me at some point because Ritsu named Reigen’s contact as Dad and I legitimately thought that was Ritsu’s actual dad until later.)
Fast forward after Ritsu gets a haircut from Teru in Spirits and Such. Pretty funny considering how Reigen did the same thing to Serizawa in Season 2, but I’m mildly sure Serizawa doesn’t exist in this fic so it was probably a coincidence.
So they’re going shopping and Ritsu gets another text from Shou, because Shou isn’t in town, or at least, that was what we were led to believe, until he does pop up.
And it wouldn’t be Shou if his appearance isn’t random, so of course his first line is to comment on Kiwis looking like balls.
Ritsu, being Ritsu, responds by calling Shou an asshole and proceeds to be conflicted between wanting to punch Teru, because he knew all along, or wanting to hug Shou, because Ritsu misses him so much. He goes for the latter.
Cue Shou and Ritsu hanging out because Shigeo and Teru had to go save Reigen from a spirit job, and their interaction is just so Ritshou it makes you feel fuzzy inside y’know? Because it’s just...friends being friends.
Ok so fast forward again, and they’re sitting around in Ritsu’s room and here’s where the plot begins:
Shou, sleepily, declares he wants them to live together, before suddenly falling asleep.
And Ritsu panics because he can’t tell if he’s serious or just sleep drunk. So he consults Teru to confirm this, who answers that, yes, Shou was being serious, and this just makes Ritsu panic even more because wow he did not expect that and mostly because he can’t afford an apartment.
Shou, being the rich boy he is, offers to settle the payment, because of course he would.
Ritsu weighs his options in his head and convinces himself that he’ll do it. So that’s what they do. They make a little list, which is funny and adorable, and start scouting for apartments online.
Fast forward yet again and Ritsu’s plan was to first gather his shit from his dorm room, crash there for a bit, before fully moving into the new apartment.
Reigen, Teru, and Shigeo are seeing the two off at the train station, and Reigen being Reigen, he’s all double checking that Ritsu has all his shit and it’s just such a dad moment.
Most of their luggage is Shou’s because Ritsu packs light and most of his things are at the dorm, and I brought this up because of this scene:
“It’s my oldest friend!” Shou had argued, trying to wrestle it from Ritsu’s hands. “Six years I have known you, Suzuki, and never once has there been a working bulb in this lamp.”
We get a few more cute scenes of Shou running around and being playful before being tired out and falling asleep on the train, and there’s this tender moment where Shou’s snuggling on Ritsu’s jacket, which the latter had taken off early, and he makes a comment saying how it smells like Ritsu which just baffles the only. It’s...nice, makes me fluffy.
Anyways they reach Ritsu’s dorm to crash and pack, and they have this scene where Shou gets a little emotional about how organized Ritsu is, and he genuinely couldn’t believe how Ritsu is making this work.
So! Chapter 6, alright! And it’s the apartment viewing chapter, because of course they need to view apartments before moving in (which is as fun as it sounds).
They view 3 apartments, with the third try being the charm;
Apartment 1 fucking sucks! And Ritsu only chose this because he wanted to get a feel of how apartment viewing works, and you gotta hand it to him for thinking ahead. So no matter what, he knows he won’t be buying this apartment.
Apartment 2 was actually pretty decent, the landlord, however, was not. Throughout this scene, she is constantly trying to get into Ritsu’s space, and you don’t exactly know what’s up until the very end where she gets really close. Shou saves Ritsu in the end by dragging him away and making it known that, “THIS IS MY MAN DO NOT TOUCH.” And makes an enemy out of her, so big whoops.
Apartment 3 is kinda awkward but workable, with their landlord being the sweetest man to walk this earth. His kids were born on the viewing day, which made him a little late, though Ritsu finds in understandable. After the viewing, Ritsu asks if they can crash at the apartment even though they haven’t actually gotten it yet, and the man’s like, “Don’t worry, you’re gonna live here anyways so might as well crash here now!” Protect this man.
Next scene we have Ritsu finally moving out of his dorm and into the apartment with Shou and after getting a few groceries, they finally decide they should head to IKEA for furniture. It’s a pretty funny scene because everyone knows IKEA is an equivalent to a bloody maze, so you get to watch them play around in the display rooms and climbing into beds and getting lost.
And it’s funnier because this is the Shou’s first time stepping foot into an IKEA, and Ritsu makes fun of him for it briefly. Shou gets back at him later on when they’re playing around in a bathroom display room.
he doesn’t quite notice where Shou’s wandered off to until he turns around from a bathroom sink and spots him in a shower stall, calling him over with a wave of his hand. Ritsu steps inside, ducking his head under the bar for the shower curtain
He almost startles when Shou reaches over and pulls the shower curtain closed with a flourish, leaving them enclosed in the shower stall, somehow still mysteriously lit by no lamp that Ritsu can see. He shoots Shou a questioning look, only to snort when Shou leans back against the shower wall, a hand over his heart and eyelashes fluttering.
“Why, Mister Kageyama,” he says, all false coquettishness, “Cornering a young girl like me alone in a place like this? How scandalous.”
He considers giving Shou the reaction he wants, a laugh and a shove on the shoulder and possibly a comment about exactly how classy making out in an IKEA shower stall is, but the reaction he’d gotten earlier was too good to resist playing along with the joke.
He shamelessly uses his height advantage when he steps into Shou’s space, one leg between Shou’s and a hand propped casually on the wall beside his head. He leans down so that their noses are almost touching, and says low, “Well with you standing here all gorgeous like this, how could I resist?”
It’s pathetic joke flirting, some cheesy disaster line out of every old black and white movie he’s ever watched with his mother, so he doesn’t quite expect it when Shou seems to freeze, eyes wide and locked onto Ritsu’s. It’s only for a few seconds, a barely noticeable pause before Shou’s howling with laughter as he pushes past him out of the shower, but Ritsu gets caught on it, on the hitch he thought he’d heard in Shou’s breath, on the way he feels oddly wired, like his skin is buzzing from the proximity, and what the fuck had just happened?
This scene, ladies and gentlemen, had me sold on the fic. Starting with how Shou had playfully dragged Ritsu into the display shower in an attempt to tease Ritsu, only to be surprised that Ritsu had played along because, according to Ritsu, the raven would usually just laugh and dismiss the joke as a joke.
You can literally see that’s where the subtle feelings come out, where their friendship suddenly moves a bit faster into something more. It’s a slowburn for a reason, because their relationship happens really slow, so it’s moments like these that makes you really warm inside.
We come to a near end to the fic from here, which includes a scene where Shou cooks and Ritsu has a wet dream that’s pretty brief tbh and nothing too explicit don’t worry. Then there’s some scenes where Ritsu’s doing school things and Shou’s being Shou in the kitchen and everywhere.
It slows to a stop after the iconic Shou and Ritsu flies scene, because we’re all suckers for Ritsu trusting Shou that he won’t drop him when they fly.
SO! You can pretty much get the idea of how the fic will end/go from there since the major arc scene has been settled (moving in together). And frankly, if Ravenesta was to stop the fic on chapter 9, I don’t think we’ll lose too much since the only thing we didn’t get is a conclusion to the slowburn.
If you’ve read up to here, thanks for indulging me I suppose. I mostly write little reviews for my own sake since I really talk too much and it’s very hard to collect my thoughts at times.
Is this a fic I would recommend? Most definitely yes, it’s lovely, it’s well written, it’s captivating. It is the embodiment of Ritshou’s romance, and I really wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

“If you can do it, Kageyama Shigeo… Then nobody can defeat you.”
Got his last scene… amazing as always, you’ll always be the best villain in mob psycho 100 in my heart…
Sorry for reposting because the last time it did not show up in the tag and Tumblr hates me apparently. With meta this time!
With his finale maybe a few words about him.
He started his life as a positive force in the world, just like mob he used his powers to help others and exorcised evil spirits. But sometimes just because you are a good person that doesn’t mean good things must happen to you. And through all the misfortunes, we feel like we didn’t deserve the bad things in life. We cannot choose what happens in our life but we can choose how to face it, change ourselves, cut off bad influences, get help, find support… but Mogami has been dealing with everything on his own since high school when his mother fell sick. With no alternatives, he just did what he thought was the only way, and walked himself to a dead end.
In his battle with mob, even after mob has broken his ‘vessel’, the fight doesn’t end. The whole mogamiland turned against mob instead. I think that really reflects on Mogami’s situation. He cannot control the rampant evil spirit in mogamiland, just like we cannot eliminate all evil in our world. But Mogami was the one who chooses to take in all that evil and trap it inside him and build his entire mindscape with it. On the other hand, it also seems like the true enemy is not Mogami, but the world’s evil, and Mogami is just the vessel that it manifested in. (Quite like how Minori isn’t the enemy, but Mogami who possessed her).
I think a lot of his actions were led by not only his hatred towards the society that took advantage of his misfortune, but also his self-hatred. He did all that he could to save his mother only for him to kill her unknowingly. Which is why when he met mob he constantly told him not to be like him. He is aware that his world view is extremely toxic but he could not accept that it doesn’t have to be that way, because that would mean his life, all his effort, all his suffering would be worthless and he cannot accept that. When mob told him about everyone is worth saving and the world could change, Mogami immediately tried to shut him up, is it because he believed that he himself is not worth saving, and neither is the world that made him that way?
In a way, I think mob’s forgiveness towards Minori also implies he forgave Mogami as well. Truly it takes a lot of courage and compassion to forgive someone like Mogami. But like every villain in mob psycho 100, he was saved from himself in the end. He had long lost his hope in humanity but he saw it again in mob, which is why he wanted to watch him. I suppose he wanted to be proven wrong deep down, no one wants to live in a sense of hopelessness forever, even if the negativity is justified. In this episode, Mogami chooses to trust mob when mob said we need to trust others, or nothing can be accomplished, and that Minegishi will change, and Mogami spared him.
I believe mob has learned a lot from Mogami too, not in the way Mogami intended, but it still made an impact none the less. Other than the lessons that he explicitly stated in the show, he also learned not to take shit from people, that sometimes talking does not work, that sometimes he needs to be strict.
In this episode, Mogami seemed to have passed on in the anime, but it was not as explicit in the manga (or the Chinese sub that I watched). In the end, whether he has passed on or not, I hope he could see hope, forgive the world, and himself.
This is the reason why I am interested in his redemption, He is a really relatable character to me, for a long time I believed that withstanding all the stress and pressure from my studies and abuse from my teacher will be rewarded, but in the end, I just got depression and trauma, I blamed myself for making those choices, for just taking whatever happens to me, I wanted to believe I had no choice. It is easy to develop a cynical world view, and I did. But seeing that character who fell so deep into the whirlpool see hope again, gives me hope too.
Maybe I can do that too, forgive myself too, forgive the world too, and make a change too.
“None of this is your fault. You’ve done nothing wrong.”

Homura’s Flash Reviews [March 2019]
Tumblr media
The Napping Princess
Every time Kakone falls asleep, she dreams of a magical world based on a fairy tale told her to her by her father, of becoming a princess with a magic tablet that can bring things to life.  In real life, her father is a car mechanic and she’s a high school senior getting ready for college. When her father is arrested, leaving behind only her childhood stuffed animal and a cracked tablet that he warns cannot fall into the wrong hands, the real world and her dream world begin to intersect in surreal ways.  Perhaps the key to saving her father and learning the truth about her deceased mother lays within the fantasy world of her dreams?
What a fun ride!!  I do think the movie was a little long and draggy in places, but other than that, I’m such a sucker for those moves where reality and fantasy overlap so that you can’t tell where one begins and the other ends, what’s real and what’s only a dream, how much of the magic is real and how much of it is metaphor.  Both the dream world and the real one are beautifully animated and populated.  I love the way that characters are animated, with their motions all almost over animated in a way that adds so much personality to even the smallest of movements. Overall, it’s an incredibly sweet sci-fi adventure about family and doing your best no matter what.
overall: 8/10
Tumblr media
Big Fish and Begonia
Chun lives in the world beneath the ocean with the Others, those responsible for controlling the natural forces of the human world. When each Other comes of age, they are transformed into a dolphin to spend seven days in the human world and observe natural forces in motion. When Chun is on her way back, however, she’s trapped in a net and nearly killed -- if not for the human boy who cuts her free, saving her life and drowning in the process.  Wracked with guilt for the boy’s death, Chun pits herself against her family, her friends, and the very nature of the world itself to grant him another chance at living.
God I’m still crying.  This was incredible.  If you like Ghibli, Spirited Away in particular, you are going to adore this movie.  Not only is the animation drop dead gorgeous and the designs breathtaking, but the story is truly touching and heart-wrenching.  This fantastic world is colorful and unique, drawing from Chinese mythology to populate this fantastical world, and god I can’t talk enough about the animation okay!! It was like they drew 2D animation over 3D models somehow, if that makes sense?? Somehow it felt like they merged the best of both worlds.  and the music, oh god THE MUSIC...that alone brought me to tears.  An absolutely gorgeous animated film that everyone NEEDS to watch ASAP.

Mob Psycho 100
Unassuming Kageyama Shigeo aka “Mob,” is a young and very powerful psychic who spends his afternoons working as an exorcist with “psychi” Reigen Arataka. Though he’s decided he doesn’t want to rely on his psychic powers, events spiral out of control after his younger brother is kidnapped by a group of powerful espers.
I really took my sweet time getting to this one, but thanks to @dark-angel-of-muses, we watched it together all in just two days. And it was GREAT!  I was really wary to start because I really, really did not like One Punch Man, written by the same mangaka.  This one, however, has all of the heart, soul, and endearing characters that I felt was lacking from OPM.  Mob is the politest and sweetest young man in the world, and his emotional struggles are immensely relatable.  I was under the impression from memes that Reigen would be a much skeevier personality, but he turned out to actually be the most well-adjusted and most good-hearted character in the whole show.  Despite the fast pace of the show as well, every important aspect of it seems to get the attention it needs, and nothing feels rushed.  Not to mention the innovative animation, which seems to switch between styles and even mediums even between shots in a way that makes it more exciting and supports the emotions of the story, rather than being cluttered or confusing.
Definitely looking forward to catching up on season 2 next!
overall 9/10

He doesn't know what to do with himself, his goal he worked so hard to achieve was finally accomplished and he never really thought what to do after that. He's taking a walk outside, trying to clear his head. Not many people left their house that day, naturally still scared of what happened. He doesn't have a reason to be scared, though, so he walks on. After spacing out and letting his legs do the thinking, he finds himself in front of the Spirits and Such Consultation Office. Huh, that's where Ritsu's brother and his boss work. Maybe Ritsu is in there right now. - Shou tries to get used to living a normal life, now that his father is arrested

Tales from Spirits and Such
Tales from Spirits and Such by chaos crochet and anthropology
Up the stairs and to the left you'll find a small, seedy office with a strange little family made up of a self-proclaimed psychic, his actual psychic partner, a floating green snot bubble of a ghost, and the collection of psychic and non-psychic children that they've adopted. These are the stories of the little moments in-between and sometimes the big moments at various points in their lives.
A series of Mob Psycho one-shots, ranging from pre-canon to post-canon.

What does it mean to be dangerous?
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7 Part 8 Part 9
"What did he come here for?" Arataka frowned, still following Hanazawa's figure walking away down the hallway. "Is he still insisting on his stupid show?"
"My brother asked him to come." Kageyama-san shrugged and kept filing the invoices that were beginning to pile up on his desk. "You still don't like him at all, huh?"
"He's just a show-off who thinks he's better than everyone else because he's on TV."
"He's not that bad," Kageyama-san shrugged. "When you bother to get to know him, he's got a good heart."
"If you say so," Arataka muttered through his teeth.
Hanazawa's qualities had to be deep down because Arataka had never been able to see them. All he knew was that every time he showed up there, Kageyama-san ended up in misery.
"And couldn't your brother come directly? Someday it would be nice to meet him." Arataka grunted. " Apparently, you've already met Serizawa."
"You're talking to each other again, then?" Kageyama-san put down the papers on the desk table and walked over to him, messing up his hair. "I'm glad."
"Let go of me, it takes forever to get it back under control!" Arataka shrugged, hands on his head, trying to shield himself from Kageyama-san. "You could have told me something about Serizawa. Did you two have a good time at my expense?"
"If I had told you anything, the same day you would have broken down the door of his house demanding that he explain himself."
"And?" Arataka folded his arms. "What would have been wrong with it, five months! He could have been lying in a ditch and I wouldn't even have known about it! Didn't I at least deserve to be told that he was fine?"
"People deserve their privacy and Serizawa had his reasons for vanishing." Kageyama-san leaned against the edge of the desk. "Serizawa knows he' s dangerous."
"Dangerous? He's no more dangerous than you!" Arataka raised his arms in despair. He felt like he was talking to a wall.
"Exactly. He's as dangerous as I am. His power is no joke. We are dangerous. Just because it's been years since I lost control doesn't mean it can't happen again." Kageyama-san massaged his temple. "Serizawa knows that too."
"And I'm too much of an idiot to understand, is that it?" Arataka sat back in his chair and started looking at the web hits.
"Taka, I didn't mean."
"Whatever, leave it." Arataka interrupted him. He didn't need to hear anything else.
Kageyama-san left him alone. Silence was an oppressive presence in the office. Arataka typed angrily, trying to push away the depressing thoughts that tried to creep into his mind.
Arataka was not like Kageyama-san. Or like Serizawa. Arataka had no powers. He couldn't help in exorcisms. He couldn't notice the presence of evil spirits. Nor cleanse bad energies. There was nothing that made him special and Kageyama-san had had no problem reminding him of that. Arataka had forcibly created a place for himself within those four walls but that place had never belonged to him. Arataka was never going to be able to understand them. Maybe his mother was right. He was already a high school student and maybe it was time for him to start taking his future more seriously.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
For once, the supposed curse that had been causing the customer nightmares had been real. Shigeo hadn't had much trouble taking down the evil spirit attached to the small ceramic figurine. His power still sizzled around him as he sat back down in front of his desk.
Taka didn't flinch, his gaze riveted on the computer screen as he typed. Tension could be breathed in the air. Shigeo let himself slump against the back of the chair and sighed defeatedly, his gaze glued to the ceiling. As much as it pained him to think about it, it wasn't the first time Shigeo wished someone else had been the one to walk into Taka's life. Anyone else would have been a better influence on that kid than a social inept like him.
"Tomorrow's client called to cancel the appointment. He said he'll call back to reschedule another time."
Taka stood up, grabbing his coat and slung his backpack over his back. His gaze seemed far away. Shigeo felt like a complete good-for-nothing.
"Taka, you were right," Shigeo said before Taka walked out the office door. "I should have told you."
"Right." Taka turned, hand still gripping the doorknob tightly. "You should have told me. Why didn't you?"
"I was afraid it would all happen again." Shigeo massaged his temples. "I just wanted Serizawa to have some more time. He's been repressing that power inside him for a long time, hiding from the world. When his mother called me, there were so many things that reminded me of how things were when I was still at home. Repressing never ends well."
"What do you mean?" Taka let go of the knob and took a step, moving closer. "Serizawa would never have hurt me. Things float around him when he gets nervous but"
"Ritsu ended up in the hospital because of me." Shigeo hunched over the desk table, elbows digging into the wood, his monotone barely reflecting how much saying that was affecting him. "I could have crippled him or even killed him. I'm sure Serizawa knows what it's like to live with that fear."
Shigeo knew he should have told him much earlier. Taka had a right to know what kind of person he was. Maybe it would have been a good idea to accept Hanazawa's offer but Shigeo could also be selfish.
"Is that why he never comes to see you?"
Shigeo nodded his head. His mouth tasted like bile. Shigeo was barely able to raise his eyes, too scared to find out what he would see on Taka's face.
" He could at least call" Taka replied with a snort. "What a jerk."
"I don't know why I expected any other reaction." Shigeo laughed. "You know the rest of the world would think we're the idiots, right?"
"Like I care." Taka shrugged. "It's not like people need to be psychic to hurt you. I'm sure it was just an accident."
"Serizawa is lucky."
" Yeah... now try to fix it." Taka tried to hide but the blush was tingeing the tips of his ears.
