i keep on thinking about how textually, the townie eps are important because they show that steven’s human life is just as exciting and important to him as his gem life, but in reality most people just find them boring. i think shrinking the cast of human characters to care about (focusing on the ones with closer relationships to steven/any of the gems really) and having most of the townie eps center around them instead would have mitigated this

#because usually ppl say that out of the humans they care about sadie lars and connie the most #aka the ones with the most screen time and imo more interesting interactions with steven #as in the interact with him as if they’re their own developed characters rather than a personality to bounce off of #one example of a character who is NOT like that is mr smiley #he doesn’t really have any overarching motives to care about and he’s just written as #‘businessman who gets comedically but impersonally mad at steven’#this is a definite sliding scale bc i think ronaldo was CLOSE to being compelling but they didn’t follow up #with his relationship to lars in horror club so it just fell through #funnily enough mayor dewey would be VERY close (maybe even in) that Interesting Human category which i would agree with #but ik the fandom would not #so these aren’t comprehensive criteria #ALSO more non-lore eps of gems doing human things (past s1) and humans being more intricately involved with gem things would’ve been amazing #the former really outweighed the latter
