so I just finished watching ponyo for the first time and I gotta say the climax kind of surprised me a little bit. ponyo’s parents trash dad and sea goddess no I don’t know their names rn what gave that away kept talking about how sosuke has to pass the “Test of Love” in order for ponyo to stay with him as a human and I was so worried that this little five year old boy was gonna have to do some big grand thing or maybe have to sacrifice his mom in some way in favor of ponyo (the way my heart stopped when we saw the empty car—) so when it came down to ponyo’s mom just asking sosuke if he would love ponyo, knowing what she was and who she is, I had a moment of oh. this is what it should be. because what is love, if not just us making a choice to accept everything someone is, as they are now and in the past and even the future. love is a choice, and love is acceptance.
