Are the any superhero type characters from Brazil you wish got more attention internationally?
The ones I create, hopefully I don't really want specific characters to get more attention internationally, so much as I want more interesting characters to be developed, because most Brazilian superheroes (and that goes for a lot of other international superheroes) tend to be stuck on creative dead ends. I can elaborate more on that and the history of Brazilian superheroes if asked but if you want a specific answer, I'll give three, first one being, Tales of the Orishas by Hugo Canuto.
Tumblr media
Tales of the Orishas fuses the pantheon of the African diasporic religion of Candomblé with the Silver Age comic aesthetics of Jack Kirby into a riveting tale of high adventure. The story centers around a celestial battle between the gods of Brazil, who are worshipped by the Bahia people, and a fearsome conquering force led by a dark and malevolent overlord. Only Shango, the god of fire and thunder, can lead his people into victory while the fate of creation hangs in the balance.
It is considerably popular already and even used for didactic purposes in classrooms overseas. but I can say very comfortably can say that this is a thing that should reach as large an audience as possible by any means. I mean, fucking look at it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but I've seen enough pages of it that I can very comfortably call it the best Jack Kirby tribute I've ever seen, even though it's ambitions are way higher than just doing that, and It's been heavily recommended by everyone I follow within the Brazilian comics scene for very self-evident reasons. Gets my strongest recommendation out of all these as proof of concept for what can and should be done with Brazilian superheroes.
Tumblr media
Danilo Beyruth is one of the biggest names amongs the local comics scene, and has done several works with superhero-esque characters like The Necronaut, which is about a Spectre-esque "lifeguard of the dead" who wanders the world helping spirits carry over and resolve their unfinished business, and Days of Horror, which is a showcase piece for 50 major names in Brazilian comics, in a story about a Dr Doom analogue named Doc Horror standing trial for his role in an alien invasion that murdered his world's Trinity as well as thousands of civilians. He's done five books on the Astronaut series, which are a space-opera superhero-esque revamp of Monica's Gang character Astronaut, more in line with their more adult-themed Graphic MSP line-up.
Tumblr media
The power to change the world lies in his hands...but he only wants to play king.
Rei de Lata is set in a world ravaged by war that faced it's worst disaster: a biological weapon that practically drove an entire country extinct. Unexpectedly, however, all children born after the attack developed some kind of abnormality, some kind of power generated by a survival instinct, trauma or extreme situation. Due to their immunity to the toxic air, the surviving adults detest and fear them, and wish to hunt and study them, and so the super-kids must battle for their survival in a post-war country.
And I'm also gonna be including Rei de Lata (I think you can loosely translate it as The Can King but that is way too clunky and isn't quite right for what the name is supposed to mean and sound like), which is available on Webtoon. It's more along the lines of a shonen battle manga, but it is about distinct, superpowered characters, it's invited enough comparisons to MHA and the main character is a supervillain so I feel comfortable putting it here. It's been ongoing since 2017 and I think it got a physical release, it rules and rises above a lot of it's inspirations, the protagonist and side characters are all great opposite perfectly detestable villains. Very strongly recommend it, really excited to see where it's going.

12 7 2 for any ocs!! :D <3333
hiiii vera :-3 i'll be answering using multiple ocs bc they've been rotating in my head lol
(number 2 under cut bc it got REALLY long oopsies)
7. What is an aspect of their appearance that you like the most?
midas' lack of (visible) face is easily my favorite part of her design, it adds to the dehumanization and mysticism surrounding her character. she's a walking corpse without a name or a face :-)
it's kinda hard to say for danilo, its design is supposed to look plain and boring so ToT i think i have to say its hairstyle, since i do have notes for myself to convey their emotional state through their hair
i also like akira's hair. another intentionally bad hairstyle to convey a bit of the character lol. but my favorite about her is of course her stitches, they're her core design element after all and shows a bit on how her ability works
12. Do you have a playlist for the character? What songs do you associate with them and why?
for this trio i have a playlist that has songs that fits at least one of them, so it's a trail mix rather than a dedicated playlist. some songs there that fit all three of them are:
Curses - The Crane Wives
Christine F - Surf Curse
The Perfect Girl - Mareux
The Wolf - SIAMES
2. How long was the process before the character reached its final version? (or a version that would be clearly recognizable as the character?)
midas' process of creation was hilariously and needlessly convoluted. i've talked about it previously here. tl;dr: her conception went as far back as 2022 but it never came into concrete creation until early this year
design-wise, it went through quite a few iterations. i kept getting unhappy with its design, but i think i'm finally happy with this one
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(oldest to most recent)
danilo was also a funny one, although quicker. here's a quick one that i just now realized i never uploaded here:
Tumblr media
they weren't supposed to be any more than "haha funny priest gets off to pain" one-note character, and a lot of their character traits that i wrote down when i uploaded them on artfight were mostly quick thoughts that i had no real plans for, but unexpectedly a lot of those traits come together very, very seamlessly. from their near-perfect memory (caused a major conflict with their daughter), their distaste of wealth, even their scars and the choice they made to be a priest. they're a very happy accident :-)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
my first ever art of them vs the "transition" process to where we're at now. around this time i've also started to solidify their character, so i decided a mildly awful hairstyle like their current mullet thing would be fitting
creation date wise, akira is the oldest of the bunch. she was initially created as a jjk oc on early 2022, and i've posted her exactly once at that year lol. she was initially created to be paired with kenjaku as well as nao. i thought it would be fun if kenjaku were to meet someone who's so like them yet they hold no respect for, i always love hypocrisy in character writing
like midas, her character took a backseat because i was still fixating on ko around that time (more specifically developing ko's jjk au), but this year i've exported her to an original story with both danilo and midas. these three were created completely separated from the others and weren't intended to be in the same story at all, but their character works like turning gears with one another and now they're grinding my brain
jjk akira didn't have much going for her besides her cursed technique. like the other two, akira's finalization took time this year. when driving an idea struck me to frame akira's curiosity for life in a different way than kenjaku's: hunger. rather than intellectual curiosity, akira's drive for knowledge is something more primal, seeing herself and others as no less or more than animals, and she's made herself an apex predator to learn about it all firsthand. from heart to liver, from fat to blood

"Pop, can you tell me about mom?" Angel knew that question would come at some point from his son Danilo. He was a teenager now and Angel knew he would be more curious about his mom after seeing all the mothers dropping their children off to school every morning. When Danilo was younger Angel showed him pictures of his mama, and always told him "that's your mom, and she loves us so much". It always broke Angel's heart thinking of her and talking about her, but he wanted Danilo to know who his mother was.
He vowed to tell Dan about her when he asked even though he knew that he probably wouldn't get through it without breaking down. 15 years later and the pain was still indescribable and very very raw. She was the love of Angel's life and he knew he would never find anyone like you.
Angel sat Danilo down at the table and patted his knee. "Are you sure you wanna know Dan?" He asked his son.
"Si pops" Danilo told him and that was the encouragement Angel needed to start talking.
By the time I was your age, I'd give anything
To fall in love truly was all I could think
That's when I met your mother, the girl of my dreams
The most beautiful woman that I'd ever seen.
"When I first saw her, she took my breath away instantly. She was struggling to carry shopping bags to her car so I offered to help being the gentlemen I am" Angel smiled sadly at the memory. He can still see her struggling to juggle 6 bags with 2 arms. She refused help at first but Angel didn't take no for an answer and grabbed the bags from her causing her to smile. And from that moment on he knew he wouldn't let this woman leave his life.
"She had this smile that lit up every single room she walked into son, you would have loved it like I did". It was Danilos turn to smile sadly.
"I really wish I could have seen that smile pops, but I've seen pictures of it and she was so beautiful" Danilo told his dad.
"She really was Dan" Angel confirmed.
"What happened next? When did you see her again?" Angel was coping ok telling this part of the story, they were happy memories which filled his life with pure and utter joy.
She said, "boy can I tell you a wonderful thing?
I can't help but notice you staring at me
I know I shouldn't say this, but I really believe
I can tell by your eyes that you're in love with me."
"Well, I'm not going to lie to you son. I followed her home" Angel smiled sheepishly at his son. "Never do that though kiddo" he warned Dan and ruffled his hair.
"I watched her go into her house and I just knocked on the door" Angel laughed. "No plan, no nothing". When she opened the door I just stood there and stared at her like an idiot, she asked me how I knew where she stayed, so I just shrugged and flashed her my best smile"
Angel smiled at the memory. He will never forget the look she gave him. She wasn't scared or pissed off or annoyed. She was happy and Angel knew that she knew he was in love with her already. He had never felt the butterflies he felt when she shook her head softly and smiled her beautiful smile at him.
He was smitten and boy did she know it. "She literally said to me - "I can tell by your eyes that you're in love with me" - "and I didn't deny it. I'm glad I didn't".
"She sounds wonderful dad, what happened next? What did you guys get up to?" Angel was so glad Danilo wanted to learn more about his mother. He knew he would want to say some point and he was glad it was when he was old enough to understand.
Now most of the time we'd have too much to drink and we'd laugh at the stars and we'd share everything
Too young to notice and too dumb to care
Love was a story that couldn't compare
"We were still pretty young back then, so we spent most of our time getting drunk under the stars. Our favourite place was a little hut down on the beach. We don't know who owned it but we claimed it as our own" Angel took her there for a first date and it soon became their favourite place to go. They kept a blanket and some pillows under the bench at the hut for when they were too drunk to drive home.
They said their first “I love you’s” there, and Angel found out he was going to be a father there.
I said, "girl can I tell you a wonderful thing?
I made you a present with paper and string
Open with care now, I'm asking you please
You know that I love you will you marry me?"
"I proposed to her there too" Angel smiled sadly at the memory. "I wrapped up a ring box, and put some string and ribbon on top. I told her it was just a little gift but really it was a ring". Angel didn't know what the perfect way to propose was. He had never thought he would get married and he didn't really have any serious relationships so this was all new territory for him. "As she opened it, I went behind her and got down on one knee. She turned around and was crying but that beautiful smile lit up her face".
"And she said yes" Dan confirmed.
"That she did kid, she made me the happiest man alive".
Now son, I'm only telling you this because life can do terrible things
You'll learn one day, and I hope and I pray that God shows you differently
The hardest part was coming up for Angel. He had told Danilo some of the happier memories Angel and his mother shared but he knew that he owed Danilo the whole truth. He knew Dan could handle it, he just didn't know if he could handle telling Dan.
"This next part Dan, isn't sunshine and rainbows. All of it isn't happy memories but I want to tell you the truth. I'm telling you because life can do terrible and awful things and I just want you to be ready for what life can unexpectedly throw at you" He reached out and grabbed his son's hand, bringing it to his lips to kiss before placing it onto his own cheek and cuddling it.
She said, "boy can I tell you a terrible thing?
It seems that I'm sick and I've only got weeks
Please don't be sad now, I really believe
You were the greatest thing that ever happened to me
"Everything was going great. We were married and were expecting you. You were due in a few weeks and it was supposed to be the best time of our lives, well it was, but also the fucking hardest" Angel couldn't stop the few tears that spilled from his eyes. He wasn't ashamed of crying in front of his son. It was a natural human trait so he didn't wipe them away.
"She called me at work. Asked me to come home quickly. I thought she was in labour with you so I drove home as quickly as I could. When I got home she was sitting on the kitchen floor cuddling the blanket she knitted for you". Dan left the table for a few seconds and came back holding the very same blanket that his mom made for him.
"I love this blanket pops" Dan told Angel.
"I know you do son, I know you do" Angel grabbed Dan's hand again and resumed talking.
"Anyway, she told me that she had cancer, and the doctor's said she might just stay alive long enough to give birth to you" Angel's world stopped right then and there.
She didn't tell Angel that she had a feeling she was sick. She lost some hair and her bones ached, she wasn't eating and was sick, but she played it off as pregnancy symptoms and Angel will never forgive himself for believing her or for not pushing it. She went to the doctor's alone and she told them how she felt so sick and tired constantly, and she didn't just think it was the pregnancy. The doctor's confirmed she had cancer and gave her only a few weeks to live.
"I picked her up and sat her on my knee, cuddling her, letting her cry for hours and hours. It was the worst moment of my life" Angel was now crying hysterically having to relive that moment again and Dan went over and pulled him in for a cuddle of his own. Angel grabbed onto him for dear life, refusing to let go for a while.
When Angel was finally composed enough to talk he continued. "She died right after giving birth to you mate. Her body couldn't take it. She pushed through the pain long enough to bring me an amazing gift. She gave me happiness and sadness in one go. I was ecstatic to have a mini me, but heartbroken that I would raise you on my own and you would never meet the love of my life, your mama".
Angel had help from his own pops Felipe, and his brother EZ and the rest of the MC he was in. They all helped Angel grieve and to raise Danilo and he will forever be thankful to them all for that.
So don't fall in love there's just too much to lose
If you're given the choice then I'm begging you choose to walk away, walk away
Don't let it get you, I can't bear to see the same happen to you.
Angel didn't want to scare Danilo away from love. Away from something that could make him as happy as it made Angel. The chance to have his own kids. But he also didn't want Danilo to feel the sheer pain that he does every single day of his life. To wake up in the morning crying, having nightmares every single night of the exact moment he lost his wife. His partner. His everything.
"Dan, I'm not going to lie to you. I haven't lied to you all night. It hurts everyday man, every single day I think of your mom, all the memories, all the laughs, all the tears, all the arguments and it hurts like hell. I'm not trying to scare you away from love, but please, if you can avoid it, do it".
Angel knew it was so selfish of him to say that, but he would rather be selfish than watch his son go through what he has.
"I love you so much buddy, never forget that". Angel pulled Dan into his chest and kissed his forehead. He was glad to have got some things off his chest. Only Felipe and EZ knew everything, and now Danilo did too.
“I love you too dad”.
Angel just wished that Dan would never forget his mother.

Top 5 N.B.A. Trades at the Deadline
Fears of an underwhelming N.B.A. trade deadline were washed away on Thursday, when at least 11 separate deals came to fruition before the league’s 3 p.m. Eastern time buzzer.
Further fears that the most significant action of the week would belong to Major League Baseball — after the Los Angeles Dodgers’ deal with the Boston Red Sox to acquire Mookie Betts and David Price — were at last somewhat alleviated by the Golden State Warriors’ willingness to trade away D’Angelo Russell on such a frenzied day.
In all, there were 12 N.B.A. trades this week involving more than 40 current players and numerous future draft picks. Here are five major takeaways from the league’s latest transactional storm:
The Biggest Trade
In strict numerical terms, it doesn’t get much bigger than the four-team, 12-player blockbuster on Wednesday that landed Clint Capela with the Atlanta Hawks and Robert Covington with the Houston Rockets.
On deadline day, however, Minnesota managed to pull off something even bigger: The Timberwolves persuaded the Warriors to part with Russell.
The Warriors, truth be told, had always intended to trade Russell for a better-fitting player after acquiring the point guard in a sign-and-trade deal last summer with the Nets as part of Kevin Durant’s free-agent move from the Bay Area. But it happened even faster than the Warriors planned; they figured Russell would spend one full season as a Warrior while Klay Thompson (knee) — and eventually Stephen Curry (hand), as well — recovered from serious injury.
The Wolves, after missing out on Russell in free agency, sped up that timetable by agreeing to send Golden State their first- and second-round draft picks in 2021 along with Andrew Wiggins, the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2014.
Minnesota’s motivation: Russell and the Wolves’ center Karl-Anthony Towns are close friends who badly want to play together. Russell’s arrival will surely lift Towns’s sagging spirits in the midst of the Wolves’ 5-27 slide that, along with a knee injury, kept Towns from earning an All-Star berth.
For Golden State, there’s little doubt that Wiggins has the potential to flourish as merely its fourth-most important player alongside Curry, Thompson and Draymond Green — but Wiggins hasn’t come close to fulfilling his potential since he was drafted. Although there are also financial savings for the Warriors with this move, no shortage of skeptics will question whether the team can indeed get the best out of Wiggins.
The Biggest Flex
Less than a year ago, amid much eye-rolling, Miami’s Pat Riley proclaimed that the Heat, after missing the playoffs, were on the verge of a return to prominence — even with no salary-cap space. Riley then went out and lured the marquee free agent Jimmy Butler to South Beach in July via sign-and-trade — followed this week by a significant trade to bolster the Heat as they unexpectedly reside in the East’s top four.
A swap with Memphis to acquire Andre Iguodala, the most valuable player of the 2015 N.B.A. finals, along with a quality perimeter defender in Jae Crowder, should make the Heat even more of a concern for the East-leading Milwaukee Bucks. A two-year, $30 million extension Riley awarded to Iguodala as part of the trade, with a team option in Year 2, enables Miami to keep Iguodala away from a widely expected return to Golden State next season — without affecting the salary-cap space Riley is hoarding for the summer of 2021 and a potential free-agent pursuit of Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Riley was foiled in his attempts to bring Oklahoma City into the deal and likewise add the perimeter threat of Danilo Gallinari. But Iguodala and Crowder are meaningful additions — while Memphis, which has taken considerable criticism for letting Iguodala wait at home as it searched for a trade for him, proved its doubters wrong and acquired the former lottery pick Justise Winslow in the process.
The Biggest Surprise
Just when it seemed that the trade market had dried up completely for Andre Drummond, Detroit struck a deal to send him to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the final hour before the deadline.
The Pistons, though, netted a remarkably small return for a player averaging 17.8 points and 15.8 rebounds; Cleveland got Drummond for two out-of-favor veterans (John Henson and Brandon Knight) and a 2023 second-round pick.
In other words, the league’s diminishing appreciation for big men who aren’t adept perimeter shooters continues — even for big men as productive as Drummond.
Of course, Cleveland’s thinking here is fuzzy in its own right, no matter the discount price. The Cavaliers already have Tristan Thompson (whom they did not trade) and still have to find a trade destination for the disgruntled Kevin Love (who has three seasons and $91.5 million left on his contract after this season). Now Drummond joins them to form a trio of established frontcourt players marooned far, far away from playoff contention.
The Biggest Question Mark
Philadelphia was a contender for this dishonor after the recent admission from Al Horford that the underachieving 76ers, mired in a tie for fifth in the East entering Thursday’s play, have “some stuff going on in our locker room.”
Those issues persist for the Sixers, who appear to badly miss Butler. But they did manage to make two minor upgrades for their bench by acquiring Alec Burks and Glenn Robinson III from Golden State despite their limited trade assets.
Less clear is how the Rockets fared at the deadline after they were forced to surrender Capela and his team-friendly contract to reacquire the much-coveted Covington.
The Rockets will be hard for some teams to guard, but Houston will also be relying on the 6-foot-5 P.J. Tucker as its primary center for the rest of the season. Even if Covington flourishes next to James Harden and Russell Westbrook, it’s hard to take a team that small too seriously — even in the small-ball era.
The Biggest Markets
The Los Angeles Lakers decided on Thursday afternoon to pull Kyle Kuzma off the trade market. That cleared a path for the Los Angeles Clippers to acquire the Knicks’ Marcus Morris and keep him away from their Staples Center co-tenants.
It will be easier to assess the two teams, as well as the East’s top title contenders, after the buyout market shakes out. A handful of veterans in the final year of their contracts will secure buyouts from their current teams before March 1 in time to preserve their playoff eligibility to join title-chasing teams such as the Lakers and Clippers. The Lakers also will soon audition the free-agent guard J.R. Smith, who won a title alongside LeBron James in Cleveland, and are considered the favorites to sign the point guard Darren Collison — should Collison decide to make his much-anticipated N.B.A. comeback after the All-Star break.
The reality, though, is that perhaps nothing we just saw was as league-shaking as the Knicks’ decision to hire the longtime player agent Leon Rose as their next team president, according to a person with knowledge of the plans who was not authorized to discuss them publicly.
The timing of Tuesday’s ouster of Steve Mills remains dubious because it needlessly turned the Knicks’ deadline week into a roller coaster. Yet it must be said that the Knicks, despite Rose’s lack of prior front-office experience, got the whole N.B.A.’s attention by persuading Rose to surrender one of the most lucrative agent seats in the industry and take on the challenge of hauling this franchise out of its considerable hole.
If James L. Dolan, who owns the team, and the Knicks were not prepared to go the most advisable route and undertake the protracted pursuit of a proven team-builder like Toronto’s Masai Ujiri, or one of Ujiri’s highly rated peers under contract elsewhere, they at least managed to lure a well-connected and widely respected figure to Madison Square Garden. Mark it down as a decent step for a franchise that badly needs one.
How much authority and autonomy Rose actually gets is sure to tell us much more.

For the week of 28 January 2019
Quick Bits:
Amazing Spider-Man #14 begins “Family Matters” as Chris Bachalo and his army of inkers (Al Vey, Wayne Faucher, John Livesay, and Tim Townsend) join Nick Spencer and Joe Caramagna. The art is gorgeous, with some interesting layouts and beautiful washes for flashbacks, as we get a bit of an advancement on the simmering Kraven plot.

Batgirl #31 complicates matters further in the Alejo and Moore election campaigns as Babs tries to work out who Cormorant is, who he’s working for, and what’s happening. The politicking and mystery of Mairghread Scott’s script is very compelling.

Tumblr media
Captain America #7 begins the next stage of this epic, with the first part of “Captain of Nothing” from Ta-Nehisi Coates, Adam Kubert, Frank Martin, and Joe Caramagna. This one’s fairly meaty as the conspiracy to eliminate Cap from the board continues to come down around him as he deals with the consequences of being framed for the murder of General Ross. I’m very impressed with Adam Kubert’s art here, between this and his work on Soldier Supreme, he seems to have levelled up his already wonderful art again. Some very inventive layouts and panel staging, while also employing excellent use of 9-panel grids, that make this a treat.

Crimson Lotus #3 continues to be an entertaining mix between the paranormal and a spy thriller from John Arcudi, Mindy Lee, Michelle Madsen, and Clem Robins. It’s also quite funny to see Agent Dai’s reaction to the supernatural.

Cyber Force #8 hits round two against Leviathan while Dominique comes to terms with her new status quo. Matt Hawkins and Bryan Hill attempt to show us more complications of the new cyber order, beautifully brought to life by Atilio Rojo.

Detective Comics #997 pits Batman and a strangely alive Thaddeus Brown against sharks, piranhas, drowning, and that shape-shifting beast that has been dogging everyone since “Mythology” started. This is like a demented memory lane from Peter Tomasi, Doug Mahnke, Christian Alamy, Mark Irwin, David Baron, and Rob Leigh.

Doctor Strange #10 offers up the beginning to a new wrinkle in a story that has been building since the first issue from Mark Waid, Jesús Saiz, and Cory Petit in the lead to this extra-sized anniversary issue. This magic accountancy office reminds me a bit of the revelation of the Time Variance Authority. There are also three back-up stories and an art piece to round out the issue.

Tumblr media
Fight Club 3 #1 is visually stunning. Like with Fight Club 2, Cameron Stewart is pushing himself to create some of the most inventive, complex, and unique art of his career. Breaking planes, panel structure, and framing within the panels themselves continue to create a blurred reality mirroring the fractured nature of the story itself. It’s good, as Chuck Palahniuk, Stewart, Dave McCaig, and Nate Piekos continue to challenge readers.

The Flash #63 concludes the “Force Quest” arc with a confrontation with Gemini and a revelation about the Forces. It kind of echoes the darkness and depression that’s been creeping back into the DC Universe in recent months. Great art from Minkyu Jung and Hi-Fi.

The Flash Annual #2 brings the tragedy of Heroes in Crisis into the Flash’s world, following on his learning of Wally’s death in Flash #63, from Joshua Williamson, Scott Kolins, Luis Guerrero, and Wes Abbott. It’s interesting to see all of the current speedsters, but this also raises some questions about Impulse, who seems to be the pre-New 52 incarnation confused about what’s happened (and feeding in to Young Justice, raising even more questions about that as well).

Ice Cream Man #9 begins “Hopscotch Mélange” and does something different. Since the beginning, this series has been an odd mix of different horror and surrealist pieces ostensibly tied together by the presence of the titular “Ice Cream Man”. This issue presents a “time before” beginning to explain the story of the Ice Cream Man and the cowboy who follows him in what feels like a mash-up of Grant Morrison and Stephen King. It’s good. Weird as hell, but good. W. Maxwell Prince, Martín Morazzo, Chris O’Halloran, and Good Old Neon continue to work wonders with this story.

Infinite Dark #4 brings the first arc to an end with a revelation as to what the entity is (or at least claims to be) as the crew tries to find a solution to absolute destruction from Ryan Cady, Andrea Mutti, K. Michael Russell, and Troy Peteri. This is a wonderful blend of horror and sci-fi with some great character moments.

James Bond 007 #3 continues the action as Bond and Lee fight over who gets the Russian smuggler. Marc Laming and Roshan Kurichiyanil are doing an incredible job with the artwork.

Journey into Unknown Worlds #1 is another of the 80th anniversary one-shots, this one offering a pair of horror out of space stories; one from Cullen Bunn and Guillermo Sanna, the other from Clay McLeod Chapman and Francesco Manna, both anchored by Lee Loughridge and Travis Lanham. They’re good. Very classic body horror approach.

Justice League Annual #1 is a major turning point in the series as Starman, the Justice League, and the major cosmic players attempt to fix the Source Wall in this tale from Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, Daniel Sampere, Juan Albarran, Adriano Lucas, and Tom Napolitano. It’s epic and definitely not to be missed in regards to what’s coming next for DC’s multiverse.

Justice League Odyssey #5 pulls back the curtain and gives us an insight into Darkseid’s plan and the purpose of the Ghost Sector. It’s nice to see some guiding force here amongst the chaos of the first four issues. Beautiful artwork from Carmine Di Giandomenico and Ivan Plascencia. Plascencia’s colours are particularly impressive with the starscapes.

KINO #13 drops a few more bombs on the narrative as it twists what’s going on even further into a delicious, mind-bending pretzel. Also a return to the old school superhero-inspired style within a virtual reality space. Alex Paknadel, Diego Galindo, Adam Guzowski, and Jim Campbell are turning in some incredible work here. Highly recommended.

Man Without Fear #5 concludes this mini with Matt continuing to be haunted by his fear as Danilo S. Beyruth returns to close out the art chores. Jed MacKay’s use of narration throughout the series has been well done, but I think this one ups the ante as Matt’s fear and the memory of his father fight to shine through.

Marvel Knights #6 gives us an end from Donny Cates, Kim Jacinto, Travel Foreman, Richard Friend, Matt Milla, and Cory Petit that delivers on action and hints at a future nightmare that the combined heroes were trying to prevent.

Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt #1 is a sequel to Watchmen. Kind of. Kieron Gillen, Caspar Wijngaard, Mary Safro, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou pick up on the squid ending, here re-envisioned as a spidery alien invasion and run with it from there. Where Peter Cannon is restored, many of the Charlton heroes are reimagined again, and Rorschach/The Question is interestingly replaced with an analogue to another Steve Ditko creation, The Creeper. It’s both entertaining and fairly meta. Gorgeous artwork from Wijngaard and Safro, even playing with the variations on the 9-panel grid structure famously used in Watchmen itself.

Rick & Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons #4 brings this fun crossover adventure from Patrick Rothfuss, Jim Zub, Troy Little, Leonardo Ito, and Robbie Robbins to an end. This has been a great series, tapping into both properties extremely well and telling an entertaining story that does both Rick & Morty and D&D justice.

Sparrowhawk #4 builds Artemisia and her motley pair of fairy compatriots up towards a conclusion in this penultimate issue from Delilah S. Dawson, Matias Basla, Rebecca Nalty, and Jim Campbell. Italy sends migrant convoy to Spain, has words with France
ROME (Reuters) – Italy sent hundreds of migrants towards Spain in a small naval convoy on Tuesday after shutting its own ports to them, sparking a war of words with France that exposed EU tensions over immigration.
Some 629 migrants, including 11 children and seven pregnant women, have been afloat in the central Mediterranean aboard the Aquarius rescue ship since Sunday, when both Italy and Malta refused to let them dock.
Spain unexpectedly offered on Monday to take in the group of mainly sub-Saharan Africans, who were picked up off the Libyan coast over the weekend. But the Aquarius is heavily overcrowded, making the four-day trip to Spain particularly perilous.
To resolve the problem, two Italian boats moved alongside the Aquarius on Tuesday to share out the migrants before heading west through what are forecast to be stormy seas.
The convoy set sail at around 9 p.m. (1900 GMT), according to a spokeswoman for the Franco-German charity SOS Mediterranne which is operating the Aquarius.
It will take the Aquarius about 10 days to make the trip to Spain and back, leaving the Dutch-flagged Sea Watch 3 alone off the coast of Libya – a staging ground for people smugglers – looking out for migrant boats in distress.
The Sea Watch reported that a migrant shipwreck had claimed at least 12 lives. A U.S. Navy ship, Trenton, radioed Sea Watch on Tuesday to say it had picked up 12 bodies and 41 survivors from a sinking rubber boat.
“This shows what happens when there are not enough rescue assets at sea,” said Sea Watch spokesman Ruben Neugebauer.
Italy has taken in more than 640,000 mainly African migrants over the past five years. Other EU states have largely ignored pleas by Rome to take in some of the newcomers and share the cost of their care, heightening anti-European and anti-migrant sentiment in Italy.
Matteo Salvini, Italy’s new interior minister and head of the far-right League, has said his decision not to accept the migrant boat is aimed at forcing other European states to help bear the strain.
However, French President Emmanuel Macron denounced the decision to block the Aquarius, saying that under international law Italy should have taken the migrants in.
“There is a degree of cynicism and irresponsibility in the Italian government’s behavior with regard to this dramatic humanitarian situation,” government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux quoted Macron as telling his cabinet.
Gabriel Attal, a spokesman for Macron’s party, went further, telling Public Senat TV: “The Italian position makes me vomit.”
Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte responded angrily.
“Italy cannot accept hypocritical lessons from countries that have always preferred to turn their backs when it comes to immigration,” Conte said in a statement.

HUNGARIAN PRAISE
Italy also received backing from Hungary’s right-wing Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who is a friend of Salvini and is known for his fiercely anti-immigrant rhetoric.
“It was so depressing to hear for years that it is impossible to protect maritime borders,” Orban told reporters in Budapest. “Willpower has returned to Italy.”
Even as Italy dispatched the charity ship, an Italian coast guard vessel with 937 migrants aboard was heading north from the Libyan coast and was expected to dock in Sicily on Wednesday.
“No one should dare brand Italy or its government as inhumane or xenophobic,” Transport Minister Danilo Toninelli told Radio Capital.
The Sea Watch met the Trenton and was asked to pick up the survivors and bodies, but the group refused to bring them on board without a written guarantee from Italy.
“We have the capacity to take them on board, but we will only do so if there is a written statement by Italian authorities that we will be able to disembark them within 36 hours,” Neugebauer said. “We cannot go to Spain.”
Doctors Without Borders (MSF), which is operating the Aquarius alongside SOS Mediterranne, urged Rome to drop plans for the lengthy trip to Spain for its migrant passengers.

“This plan would mean already exhausted rescued people would endure four more days travel at sea,” it said on Twitter. “MSF calls for people’s safety to come before politics.”
Salvini’s League scored its best-ever result in March national elections, partly on pledges to deport hundreds of thousands of migrants and halt the flow of newcomers, and has formed a coalition with the anti-system 5-Star Movement.

Activists protest as Italy prepares to ship migrants to Spain
ROME (Reuters) – Italy plans to transfer migrants crammed aboard a charity boat onto other vessels on Tuesday and then sail them all to Spain, despite appeals from humanitarian groups to let the group disembark immediately.

Some 629 migrants, including 11 children and seven pregnant women, have been drifting in the central Mediterranean aboard the Aquarius rescue ship since Sunday, when both Italy and Malta shut their ports to the vessel.
Spain unexpectedly offered on Monday to take in the migrants, who were picked up off Libya’s coast over the weekend, but the Aquarius had still not moved more than 16 hours later, as Italian authorities work out the logistics of the trip.
Doctors Without Borders, which is operating the Aquarius alongside SOS Mediterranne, said Italy wanted to shift at least some of the migrants onto other vessels and then head together in a convoy towards the Spanish port of Valencia.
“This plan would mean already exhausted rescued people would endure 4 more days travel at sea,” Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said on Twitter. “MSF calls for people’s safety to come before politics.”
It added: “The better option would be to disembark the rescued people in the nearest port after which they can be transferred to Spain or other safe countries for further care and legal processing.”
But Italy’s new anti-establishment government, looking to put pressure on the European Union to re-write its immigration rules, showed no signs of relenting despite warnings of an approaching storm bringing waves of over 2 meters (6.5 ft).
“This morning we will send ships and boats to take them to Spain,” Transport Minister Danilo Toninelli told Radio Capital, adding that Italy had already sent fresh provisions to the Aquarius ahead of the voyage which could take three days.
MORE MIGRANTS AHEAD
Even as Italy worked to dispatch the charity ship, an Italian coast guard vessel with 937 migrants aboard was heading north from the Libyan coast and was expected to dock in Sicily on Wednesday.
“No one should dare brand Italy or its government as inhumane or xenophobic,” said Toninelli.
However, charities questioned why the coast guard boat was being allowed to dock in Italy, while migrants on the Aquarius, who had been at sea for longer, were not.
“Why do 629 people on Aquarius still have to suffer? NGOs do nothing differently to the coast guard,” the charity Sea Watch wrote on Twitter. “All a political stunt … at the expense of people in distress?”
Italy has taken in more than 640,000 mainly African migrants over the past five years. Efforts by Rome to persuade other EU states to accept some of the newcomers and share the cost of their care has largely fallen on deaf ears, heightening both anti-European and anti-migrant sentiment in the Italy.
The far-right League scored its best-ever result in March national elections and has formed a coalition government with the anti-system 5-Star Movement.
League leader Matteo Salvini was sworn in as interior minister earlier this month and has vowed to clamp down on illegal immigration and change EU rules.
“To politely raise one’s voice pays off,” Salvini said on Monday. “It’s something Italy hasn’t done for many years.”

This Summer Is Setting Us Up for NBA Trade Deadline Insanity
Since the NBA Finals ended last month, we've damn near witnessed a starting lineup's worth of All-Stars change teams, while a few other franchise-trajectory-twisting talents decided to stick with their incumbent organizations.
But unlike last summer, where the two main themes were "God help us, the Warriors have Kevin Durant" and "It's time to spend all the money," the most interesting and noteworthy development over the past week has been an unforeseen obsession with short-term contracts. Fear of a flattening salary cap has increased the value of long-term financial flexibility, leading us to a slew of sensible deals that protect teams while also satisfying players who still get a ton of money, plus the opportunity to hop back into free agency right after they leave it.
Big-money deals that only last one, two, or three years are a win-win proposition, and they can potentially electrify next year's trade deadline. From the dog-paddling Toronto Raptors to the rebuilding Sacramento Kings, let's take a look at a few examples across the league.
We'll start with one of the most non-traditional acquisitions of the off-season: the Philadelphia 76ers finally joined the rest of the NBA as a free-agency participant in a major way, adding Amir Johnson and J.J. Redick with a pair of one-year deals totaling $34 million. Johnson is a fine veteran and will bring a calming locker-room presence to a young team that needs as much of that as it can get, but Redick is the more relevant addition who can change the perception of the team while also helping on the court.
Still an elite three-point shooter who will provide space and sizzle for an offense that doesn't know what that those qualities look like, the 33-year-old Redick has nearly 2,200 playoff minutes under his belt and should complement Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid, and Markelle Fultz right away.
There's on- and off-court value here. It makes sense for Redick to boost his annual income by joining a non-contender before he can re-enter free agency next summer to chase a ring. For the Sixers, that single-season pact is humongous. If the playoffs feel unattainable at the All-Star break, Philly can simply cut bait and auction Redick's valued skill set off to the highest bidder in return for a future asset.
A lot can happen between now and then, and in a scenario where the Golden State Warriors or the Cleveland Cavaliers look vulnerable—or if a fringe playoff team simply wants to make the postseason—a front office that can cobble together enough salary to make the money work may be willing to fork over a first-round pick for Redick's service. The Eastern Conference's middle class is robust, and out West teams are constantly elbowing their way past one another.
The same philosophy applies, if on a less consequential scale, to the Chicago Bulls and the two-year, $9 million deal they just gave to Justin Holiday. A long wing who made 35 percent of his threes last year, the 28-year-old's contributions are more valuable on a playoff team than one staring at rubble. The contract is curious, until you realize the Bulls have armed themselves with someone who may garner trade-deadline attention on a team that should play fast and free. Holiday's numbers will sprout if he sees the court (and playing him should be a priority).
It could go either way with Ben McLemore, who signed a two-year, $10.7 million contract with the Memphis Grizzlies. If a change of scenery alters the trajectory of his career, and the 24-year-old looks like he can contribute on a Memphis team in the running for a postseason spot, fantastic. If he plays well and they stink, even better. The Grizzlies already lost Zach Randolph to the Kings, they're waving goodbye to Tony Allen, and letting Marc Gasol's name float in trade rumors. There's a decent chance they hit the reset button pretty soon, and if McLemore is able to moonlight as a quality NBA player, his contract can be exchanged for something else.
Moving on to a few more impact veterans, the Denver Nuggets signed 32-year-old Paul Millsap to a three-year, $90 million deal that somehow has a team option hooked on at the end. Trading him after half a season would be an odd move for a Denver team with serious upward momentum and enough desire and ability to make the playoffs this year. The good news for the Nuggets is there's no downside even if things don't work out.
Millsap is a logical fit beside franchise center Nikola Jokic, but barring a deep playoff run, Denver's front office should still listen to offers that can help propel the team into the next phase of what may be one of the more appealing eras in its history. Jokic could be up for a max contract in 2019, and furnishing the roster with a more dynamic supporting cast that'll accentuate his strengths beyond the next couple years may be more beneficial for the franchise's long-term health.
The Raptors signed Serge Ibaka and Kyle Lowry to a pair of three-year deals because there apparently weren't any buyers willing to offer something better. It's a smart move for Masai Ujiri, who can now pivot from Toronto's pseudo-competitive outfit—resting on the hope that someone like Norm Powell, Delon Wright, or Jakob Poeltl unexpectedly blossoms before Lowry starts to decline—to a full-on rebuild if the Raptors disintegrate earlier than expected.
Lowry turns 32 next season and has played roughly one billion minutes over the past four seasons. He can earn up to $100 million over the life of this deal, but the fact that it's three years, not four or five, gives Ujiri more than enough leverage in a potential trade. Instead of losing one or two of his three best players for nothing, Ujiri kept both around on his own terms. (Getting off Ibaka's contract will be a piece of cake.) It's a lot of money, but the length of these contracts is more consequential than how high they rise.
Jeff Teague and George Hill both signed three-year deals for $57 million, with Teague getting a player option with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Hill receiving a partially guaranteed third year on the Kings. Both are fine contracts, but Hill's is a potential gem for one of the least experienced teams in the league. He'll essentially show De'Aaron Fox how to be a professional while existing as the club's top trade asset (one that they're actually willing to flip).
Randolph's two-year, $24 million contract falls into that same category. With their 2019 pick gone to either Philadelphia or the Boston Celtics, the Kings have an incentive to be as bad as possible in 2018. Trading Hill and Randolph, their two best players, for treats that may pay off years down the line would be wise.
Minnesota isn't looking to get off Teague, but if Tom Thibodeau feels he's a poor fit beside Andrew Wiggins, Jimmy Butler, and Karl-Anthony Towns, this contract is easy enough to exchange for another starting-caliber floor general—which oddly enough is the most interchangeable piece in the league right now.

The Golden State Warriors re-signed Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston to a pair of three-year deals, with Livingston only guaranteed $2 million in the final season. A vast majority of teams in the league would upgrade their bench by being able to bring Livingston off it, and he's still only 31 years old. It would be astonishing if no team made a better offer, but perhaps those were ignored so he could stay on Golden State's unprecedented joy ride.
Iguodala's deal is a fully guaranteed doozy, but it's also a tiny bit surprising to see no teams give him a fourth season. Yes, he turns 34 next year, but if for no other reason than to partially dismantle a dynasty, Iguodala could've probably made more money elsewhere. It'll be interesting to see if and when the Warriors unload these deals in an attempt to restock the cupboards with younger talent around their four-man nuclear warhead.
Danilo Gallinari and Patrick Patterson probably shouldn't be lumped into the same sentence, but both are useful players who were expected to attract four-year deals, assuming that's what they wanted. The market apparently shut them down.
Gallo turns 29 in a month and a torn ACL suffered four years ago might have still been on the minds of front-office decision-makers weighing the risks reward. But he's 6'10", made 39 percent of his threes last season, and is one of only a few players his size who can efficiently shoot, post up, and conduct a pick-and-roll. That explosive offensive skill set is deservedly worth the $65 million the Clippers agreed to give him over the next three years. And because there isn't a fourth year to worry about, the Clippers now have a player with enough production value to either kick-start a rebuild or at least get younger around Griffin, should they ever seriously entertain the thought.
The Gallo-Blake Griffin-DeAndre Jordan fit is suspect but intriguing. Gallinari is a stretch four in today's NBA, but with Jordan's contract about to expire (he has a player option next season) L.A. may want to trade him, play a majority of Griffin's minutes at the five, and go all-in on one side of the ball—the classic "it's crazy enough to work" strategy.
That probably won't happen, though. Instead, if things don't work out, Gallinari would draw the most significant return in a trade, as demonstrated by his new three-year deal.
Patterson, meanwhile, can guard multiple positions, knock down open corner threes, rebound, and set screens; he doesn't take anything off the table when he's on the court. He's also an ideal complement beside Paul George and Russell Westbrook, but even if those two leave next summer, Oklahoma City Thunder GM Sam Presti won't have a hard time moving on from that outrageously inexpensive three-year, $16.4 million contract if it makes sense to do so.
All this is no guarantee that the next trade deadline will be a flurry. Teams that now own these valuable short-term deals may just want to enjoy owning a valuable short-term deal. So much depends on how teams and players perform relative to expectations, if a new piece fits or doesn't, and whether one of the other 29 organizations is willing to partake in a rational negotiation.
That said, a vast majority of the deals made over the past few days have definitely increased the odds that we'll see a busy trade deadline in 2018. There's almost no risk involved in taking on any of these contracts, which means February could be an exciting, franchise-altering month in the NBA.

Italy prepares Spanish migrant convoy, clashes with France
ROME (Reuters) – Italy forged ahead with plans to send hundreds of migrants to Spain in a small naval convoy on Tuesday after shutting its own ports to them, sparking a war of words with France that exposed EU tensions over immigration.
To overcome the problem, two Italian boats moved alongside the Aquarius on Tuesday to share out the migrants before heading west through what are predicted to be stormy seas.
Meanwhile the only charity vessel left to patrol off the coast of Libya — a staging ground for people smugglers — said a migrant shipwreck had claimed at least 12 lives.
It will take the Aquarius about 10 days to make the trip to Spain and back, leaving the Dutch-flagged Sea Watch 3 alone off the coast of Libya looking for migrants.
Matteo Salvini, Italy’s new interior minister and head of the far-right League, has said his move this week is aimed at forcing other European states to help bear the strain.
However, French President Emmanuel Macron denounced the decision to block the Aquarius, saying that under international law Italy should have taken the migrants in.
“There is a degree of cynicism and irresponsibility in the Italian government’s behavior with regards to this dramatic humanitarian situation,” government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux quoted Macron as telling his cabinet.

“Will power has returned to Italy.”
Even as Italy worked to dispatch the charity ship, an Italian coast guard vessel with 937 migrants aboard was heading north from the Libyan coast and was expected to dock in Sicily on Wednesday.
