Everything was perfect. Absolutely everything you had dreamt of your whole life when it came to your wedding. Coryo had told you money was no object, and therefore, you spared no expense. You had a strong theory that your father was being sent every last bill, since you knew neither of you had anything more than what the Plinth's were providing for school, but that was the farthest thing from your problem. It was the least your father could do.
The hardest part of the whole thing, even before deciding who would give you away without your father, was deciding on your maid of honour. You didn't have many good friends, or friends at all, outside of your new husband. At one point, you wondered if had things gone differently, would you have chosen Lucy Gray?
Clemensia Dovecote was a fine enough choice. "Let me just say," Her speech began, hitting the side of her overfilled wine glass with a fork. "I have called this wedding for years, and no one believed me." She shot a smile over to you at the head table. "For anyone who doesn't know me, I'm Clemensia. Y/N's Maid of Honour." She had just thrived on the title since you offered it to her which, while annoying, was good because she took her position very seriously. She was the perfect choice- she looked nice, presentable in a dress you had picked out, but the colour clashed with the yellow in the whites of her eyes and the few scales that were yet to fall off after the snake bite. She looked fine, but she also made you look better. "But like I said, I knew this would happen."
She was drunk, repeating things in a way that made you cringe internally but nevertheless, you had to watch. The lights spread across the large backyard of the Plinth's mansion lit up the night beautifully, bouncing off every white and red rose you had spread about. You were very grateful to them for allowing you to host the reception there. They had done a lot for you in the last year since you returned from Twelve.
Mrs. Plinth was very involved with planning the wedding- she loved the winter wedding and leaning into it as a theme. It worked out nicely because it gave her something to think about other than the death of her only child, and she was a tremendous help and support to you. You were truly grateful, but this day was hard on them without Sejanus there. She had mentioned on more than one occasion that Sejanus would have been the best man, and you only slightly doubted that. You wouldn't want it to be anyone else- but Coryo would have had different thoughts, you're sure.
"How much longer will this go on for?" Your now husband whispers in your ear, fake smile on his face as he also has to listen to Clem's rambling.
"I really don't know." You reply with the same fake smile, knowing that eyes were on you just as much as her.
"Some choice for a maid of honour." He chuckles.
You roll your eyes, a playful smile on your lips. "Oh, well, I would have gone with Arachne Crane but, you know..."
"Fair enough." He mumbles, sitting back in his seat. "Are you really the only woman in the Capitol who isn't insufferably annoying? You should have been your own maid of honour."
"Well it was her or Tigris, and Tigris is prettier than me so she wasn't really an option." You hum, grabbing his hand under the table as you keep your eyes focussed on Clemensia, not paying attention to a word she says.
Coryo laughs. "Tigris is not prettier than you."
"She's your cousin, your opinion is invalid." You shrug it off.
"Doesn't change the fact that I'm right." He argues, squeezing your hand.
You don't reply, and you let his hand go to clap once Clem is finally finished. You had already eaten, so now it was supposed to be the "fun part", as Clemensia so aptly put it in her speech. You found it rude, yes, but it wasn't a big deal and after tonight you wouldn't have to see her again for a while.
It was brisk out, being a winter wedding you should have expected that, but you still had another dress to change into so you excuse yourself from the table, kissing your husband goodbye as he gets up as well.
You hadn't allowed him to see any of your dresses, and this would be your third one today alone. He loved every one, and did not expect to be disappointed by the next. Or the one after that.
"Hey, congrats, Coriolanus." He tears his gaze away from your retreating figure to whoever was talking to him.
"Thank you, Hilarius." He nods, smiling politely at him and reaching out to shake his hand.
"I saw this one coming miles away." His classmate laughs. "You remember that though, right?"
"When you said that if I wasn't going to go after her you would?" Coryo asks, eyebrow raised. "I do remember that. It makes me wonder who let you in..." It's meant as a joke as he makes a point of looking past him toward the security they have at the entrance.
He furrows his brow when his eyes catch on your father standing there, arguing with one of the security guards, his wife by his side.
"If you would excuse me..." He says, walking toward them before Hilarius could even respond.
"Ugh, I know. Why did you even invite her, Y/N/N?" Clemensia complains as Tigris helps you step out of your gown.
"Who?" You ask, unsure what she was even talking about.
"Livia." She states, yet another glass of red wine in her hand.
"Oh, I kind of had to. Connections and all that." You shrug. You weren't Livia's biggest fan, she had a "greater than thou" attitude that drove you up the wall, but who in this city didn't?
"Ah, yes. Of course." She hums. "She had a lot of audacity to show up in that dress though..."
Your head whips around to look at her. "What dress?"
"You haven't seen her?" She gasps. "I thought you saw her! It's this white-based floral, really questionable for someone else's wedding. Looks like a tablecloth." She accentuates the statement with a sip from her glass.
Your jaw ticks and you look toward the door, already seeing red.
"Hey, Y/N, it's okay." Tigris rests her hands on your shoulders, prompting you to look at her. "We'll tell security, they can escort her out if that's what you want."
You take a breath, forcing a smile on your face. "Let's not bother them. I'll just go chat with her." You smile, stepping out of the dress in bare feet, quickly grabbing Clemensia's overfilled wine glass from her hand on your way out the door.
"Y/N, Wait! Don't!" Tigris calls after you, well aware of your notorious temper by now, but you don't listen.
You're in your white slip when you storm back out to the reception area through the back patio, immediately and quickly scanning the crowd for the guest in question. You know you have seconds before Tigris likely tries to stop you, but you know Clemensia won't. Then, you see her.
You're seething already. That's practically a wedding dress on its own. You would kill her.
You stomp across the ground, tunnel vision locked on her as she raises her glass to her lips, laughing, and talking with other guests, completely careless to what she had done wrong. Well, she would learn today.
"Livia Cardew!" You grin, walking up to her. "I don't recall sending you an invitation, but here you are!"
Immediately, she's taking in your appearance, giggling at your lack of appropriate attire and shoes. "Y/N! Congratulations." She says, eyes finally locking with yours again.
"May I have a word?" You ask, already grabbing her arm and pulling her away.
"Is there a problem here?" Coriolanus asks, addressing only his security as your father stands there, red-faced with anger.
"Yeah, they've got no invite." He nods, showing Coryo the list in his hands which he quickly pretends to look over.
"Oh! Sorry, yes. There you are..." He says, pointing down at the bottom and your father visibly relaxes. "Under the title there that says 'not welcome under any circumstances'... Well then." He looks at your father now for the first time, tilting his head at him.
"No, this is my daughter's wedding and we will be let in!" He demands, raising his voice.
Coryo clicks his tongue, slightly shaking his head. "No, sir, I thought we were clear on this."
"No, you said the wedding. This, if I'm not mistaken, is the reception. I made my sacrifice. Now, I'm here."
"And only about two hours late." Coryo hums uninterestedly, looking down at his watch. "Father of the year."
Your father's fuming, and it's hard for Coryo to not laugh in his face. "I paid for everything here! You can't deny us entry!"
"I can." Coryo says. "Well, actually, my apologies. Mrs. Y/L/N, you are welcome to come in, if you'd like." He smiles at her, polite demeanour flicked back on like a light switch.
Your father quickly pulls her back behind him. "It's both of us or neither of us. Go ask our daughter." He states, gripping tightly on her arm.
"Oh, no. I won't be ruining our wedding." Coryo shakes his head, firm in his decision. "I'll tell Y/N you send your love, Ma'am. Have a good night."
"No! You will let us in right now or-" Your father's tantrum is interrupted by a commotion across the yard, drawing Coryo's attention. People gasp in shock, and then he sees you, about to absolutely lay into Livia Cardew, who now has red wine all over her face and the front of her dress.
"I must be going, now." Coryo tells them, turning back to the security guard and adjusting the cuffs of his shirt to be able to roll up his sleeves. "If you don't mind, call for peacekeepers to escort him from the property. Thank you."
He doesn't have time to hear your father's angry disagreement as he walks away.
"So," You drop her arm, turning to face her. "I'm not sure if you are aware, but this isn't your wedding." You spit, gesturing to her dress. "And listen, I get it! You're jealous. That's fine, but it's extremely tacky and honestly embarrassing for you to wear a white dress to a wedding that's not yours."
Livia's lips fall open in shock, looking down at her dress before she laughs. "Y/N, come on. It really isn't that serious, you realize that, right?"
You stare at her for a moment, weighing your options. You could smash the glass over her head like you wanted to, demand that she leave immediately, or, you could 'accidentally' spill the glass on her. Before you complete the thought, you're throwing the contents of Clemensia's glass at the front of her dress, smiling as it splatters up over her face and in her hair, dripping down the front of her expensive-looking gown.
"Oops."
Livia gasps, wiping the red substance from around her eyes and flicking it off. "I thought that for one day you could be normal! God, you are vile!" She's practically screaming now.
"This is entirely your fault, you do realize that, right?" You tilt your head at her, a slight laugh under your tone. "If you wanted my husband just say that."
"I- ugh!" She groans in frustration and anger, swiping her hands over the liquid on her chest and flicking it all at you, staining the perfectly white satin of your slip. You look down at it, and then back at her. You were about to go through the roof.
The amount of people watching in the immediate vicinity is the only thing keeping you from grabbing her hair and shoving her head into the dirt. You decide to scream instead.
It turns into more of a wail, pumping angry tears into fake sad ones. Coryo is there in a second. "Darling, what's happened?" He asks, horrified as he looks between the two of you, grabbing your shoulders.
"I-" You sniff, pointing to the girl in front of you. "I just came to offer her something to change into because that is out of dress code and I tripped and-" You hiccup as he's rubbing up and down your bare arms. "It was an accident, and then she... It was just an accident! Now my dress is ruined and, and-"
He turns his gaze to Livia who just looks pissed while you ramble on about having had a little too much to drink, that was all. He's sure that's not what happened, he knows his wife better than that, but this show was not for him. He looks her up and down, visibly disgusted by her choice of dress. It honestly looks better now.
"Coriolanus that's not-" She chuckles with the shock of the accusation, shaking her head as she pleads with him.
"It's time for you to go." He tells her, looking toward a member of security who's not busy with your father, quickly waving him over.
Livia looks at the approaching security man in shock. "I didn't do anything!"
"That dress and causing a scene over it is more than enough." He states, wrapping an arm around your waist and wiping your tears from your cheeks. "Let's get you some water, Darling. It's okay..."
"It's not!" You cry, gesturing to the few small drops of wine on the front of your dress. "It's ruined! She ruined everything!"
Just as she's about to be escorted out, you make eye contact with her, offering a smug smile. She scoffs, which earns her a grab on the arm and a more forceful expulsion from the reception.
"Y/N!" Tigris is rushing across the lawn toward you, careful not to stumble in her shoes and bridesmaids' dress. "What happened?" She asks, addressing her cousin now.
"She's okay, there was just an accident with a glass of wine. We're just going to take a few minutes. I'll help her change." He explains to her.
She nods, looking worriedly down at the small stains in your dress. "I should be able to get this out, alright?" She assures you, rubbing a clean spot of the fabric between her fingers to make sure.
"Okay, thank you." You sniff, leaning into your husband's side as he guides you back up to the house.
You get inside and upstairs to what has become your dressing room and secondary bedroom over the last year. As soon as he shuts the door behind you, you can't hold your laughter back anymore. You're practically doubled over with it, and immediately Coryo understands. He chuckles, shaking his head at you.
"What a show..." He grins fondly, pulling you into a hug which you happily return.
"Oh, you liked it?" You giggle, coming down from your laughing fit.
"It was wonderful." He agrees, kissing the top of your head. "For a moment I was worried about you."
"Aw, really?" You look up at him, jutting your lip out in a pout.
"Definitely." He hums, kissing you softly. "Now come on, let's get you changed, huh?"
"Please." You nod, kissing him again before pulling back to pull your next dress from the closet. "I was supposed to wear this underneath, but now I can't." You sigh, hanging the full dress on the door before pulling the wine-stained one over your head.
"Just that will do, I suppose." Coryo mumbles, wrapping his arms around your waist from behind as you toss the slip onto the ground.
"Oh, you suppose, do you?" You chuckle, reaching up to pull the new dress from its hanger.
"Mhm." He nods, planting a kiss in the crook of your neck. "Makes my job easier later."
You laugh, blush spreading over your cheeks and flushing your chest while you unzip the back. You carefully balance as you step into the opening in the fabric, pulling it up around your waist.
"Don't rush, Darling. It will probably take you a while to recover before we can return to the party." He says, watching you adjust the skirt before you plan on zipping it up.
"Good point." You agree, but make no effort to stop until Coryo places his hand over yours.
"What should we do with all this time we have to kill, hm?" He's already leaning down to kiss over the back of your neck.
"I feel like you have an idea..." You mumble, tilting your head to adjust to his presence.
"Have I told you how much I love you?" He asks as he gently pushes the fabric back down to drop in a pool around your ankles.
"You may have mentioned it..." You turn under his palms as they land on your lower back, gently pulling you closer. "And I love you too. More than you could ever imagine, Coryo."

Ok so I had this thing in my head for a bit. And it being spooky season I feel that I need to share.
The carriage ride was slow and uncomfortable to say the least. Being late October it was cold and rainy. All you wanted to do was to be at home with a good book by the fireplace with a nice cup of tea. But no you're here on your way to some boring party in a god awful tight dress to some middle of nowhere town just so a few rich assholes can have a few moments of fun with your fortune telling. You let out a sigh. "This sucks why do I have to do this again?" You ask yourself looking at your surroundings. "That's right the money."
You laugh to yourself. That was the only reason why you're doing this. You need the money it's almost winter and you need to have everything you need to survive. Not a whole lot of people need fortune tellers in the middle of winter. As you came to a fork on the road you hear some movement in the woods next to you. Your head snaps to the right where the sound is coming from. "Hello someone there?" You call out. Realizing what you just said you feel so dumb. "I must be losing my mind."
"Na sweetheart you isn't you just need to look better." A low raspy voice came from the trees. Out came a man with a group of not so nice friends behind him. "Now little lady give us the carriage and your gold and we will let you go." You looked at him and the others. You have been in a encounter like this before. You know that this will not end well if you don't give in. "Okay you can have the stuff but please don't hurt me." One of the men grabbed your wrist. "Oh no pet we won't hurt you, to bad." He laughed as he licked your cheek." You try to get out of his hold. "LET GO OF ME!" You yelled wishing that someone, anyone would hear you. Just as you felt the man's hand go up your shirt a strong wind knock you down. You hear screams and crying from all around you. You covered your ears to drown out the sound and shut you eyes. You felt something warm and sticky hit your face. You opened your eyes and looked around you. You see all the men dead at you feet. You bring down your hands from your ears. "What the hell?" You say out loud.
You put your hand to you cheek to see what was on it. When you pulled it away you saw it was blood. You heard movement behind you. Against your better judgement you turned to see what it was. What was before you made all your strength leave your body. You saw 8 men standing around one of your attackers Drinking His Blood. They didn't seem to notice you. Backing up as quiet and as slowly as you could, you tried to get back to the carriage. Just as you where about to make it, you tripped over one of the dead bodies. As you where about to hit the ground you felt a set of very strong and very cold arms wrapped around your waist. "Well what do we have here. A nice little thing for dessert." He said as he licked his lips bring his head down to your neck.
"Toji stop that your scaring her. Now let her go." Said one for the men. "My apologies miss let me introduce myself and my friends. My name is Kento, the man that was holding you is Toji. The two searching the bodies for anything of valuable are Satrou and Touya. The two that are cleaning up the bodies are Erwin and Keigo." They waved to you as they started to stack the bodies on top of one another. "The one that's by the tree being quiet as our look out, he is Levi and the one that is checking on your horses is Shota." You look at all of them acting like what was going on was normal. But this was normal to them. You see being vampires this was what they did. And deep down you knew that.
"T-thank you what is it that you want in payment. I don't have much but-" you paused. You pulled the collar of your dress down a bit to show off your neck. "this is all I can do for your help." You closed you eyes waiting for what comes next. But nothing happened. You opened your eyes to see them kneeling before you. "If you don't mind me asking why are you kneeling." The one named Keigo lifted his head. " You see my lady apron see your mark on your shoulder we come to know you as our goddess." The one named Satoru spoke next. "You see it is prophesized that in 100 years new goddess will be born and will guide us to our salvation. And that goddess is you, my lady."
You tried your best to understand what was being said to you. "So let me get this straight, you're telling me that I'm your new goddess?" The men all saluted and yelled "Yes goddess!" An evil smile creeps along your face. "Alright boys let's go have some fun." 👻🎃

it's something that people feel, namu understands that. but, he doesn't think anyone should wish for an early grave. so, he always did his best to try to reassure them, to try to help; he knows it's something that's a little small, he's just a small piece of helping in life. but, he could at least do something, right? even if maybe he doesn't fully understand, like you could say he doesn't fully understand yejun's situation - even though he's doing his best to try. nonetheless, namu was definitely one of the lucky ones. he had done extremely well on his college entrance exam, managing to get into a place like yonsei because of it. though, he simply dropped out after a few months because it wasn't for him and he also, almost, didn't fit in with the whole thing. so, he had decided to focus completely on chasing his dreams and he got support from his family - something that a lot of people don't get. he understands that he's lucky, privileged in that sense. at least he didn't have to worry about grades, right? at least, he probably would have done rather well if namu did enjoy college, after all. but, that's okay, because he's working towards being a singer! the thing that he wanted the most in life, the path he knows he's supposed to take.
he raises a brow for a moment as he listened. "oh... yeah," he said, shrugging his shoulders. "you shouldn't have to lose out on family dinner or having to move out," namu says, before giving another firm nod. "i guess you're going to have to continue then?" he says, even though he probably didn't need to say it because it was obvious. but, of course, leave it to namu to say the obvious. but, that was the reality for most when it comes to adulthood, right? "if you ever need to get away for a little bit though, you could always come to stay with us!" namu says, before a small giggle would leave his lips afterwards; smile all that wide once more.
"it's a mocha!" he says. "mochas are my favorite coffee drink," he explains. "do you want one? i can make another," namu is sure to offer, much in park namu fashion. anything that involved chocolate, it had always been namu's favorite, truth be told. though, he really likes savory a lot too. chocolate and savory foods, those were always his two top favorite types of food, that's definitely for sure. he nodded his head, "we make a pumpkin type of latte for the autumn season. we also have a hand made persimmon tea that we do as well when the temperature drops and the persimmons come in season," he explains as well. "oh! we also do a lot of cinnamon and spices for speciality drinks, my uncle and aunt really like doing the speciality drinks. i do as well, they're actually lots of fun to make when you have it down!" his uncle and aunt definitely have a creative flow that they use to come up with drinks that are just rather special to the café and that work really well together. lots of people always come for their speciality drinks - though, namu does make a ton of americanos, that's for sure.
he nodded his head again, a chuckle leaving his lips once more. "i'll pay you whatever rate you deem necessary!" he states. "if you have any ideas you need to give me now, just tell me and i'll fork over the money!"
cw: depression/depressive symptoms
namu is right; he shouldn't wish for an early grave. yet somehow, eternal slumber seems like the better option compared to the 8am accounting class that he can't help but dread. there are admittedly times like these where he can't help but resent his friend; getting into yonsei of all places, a sky university, and dropping out within a year to pursue his true passions. it's not fair, is it? yejun's family would have been thrilled with him if he had managed the grades to get into such a good school; maybe if he had, they would've at least let him choose his own major. or maybe that's just wishful thinking; if his family had been half as supportive as namu's was (and continues to be), he wouldn't be burying his head in a textbook and praying to be smote from the face of the earth right now.
"yeah," he sighs, and manages to straighten himself up enough. he should at least be polite, even if it's just namu, who surely won't begrudge him for being a little miserable. "i mean i could, technically. i think i'd just have to find somewhere else to stay... and probably won't be invited to family dinner anymore." he laughs, but there's nothing funny about the harsh reality he lives. he's an adult, and yet he's entirely dependent on his parents.
"what are you drinking? it smells good." yejun would much rather ignore his studies and changes the subject to something else entirely. namu is sweet, and so willing to help, but yejun won't take advantage of his kindness. no, economics is his burden to bear alone. and even if namu gave him the best notes in the world, it's better for him to study on his own even if he hates it. "are you guys doing anything special for the season, or something? jumping on the psl trend?" he's never been a huge fan of pumpkin spice, but even yejun has to admit that they've become something of a cultural phenomenon once the calendar marks the start of autumn.
"i'll take more business and marketing electives and then charge you for my great ideas, someday," he half-jokes. "at least this degree could be good for something, someday."

The Empress (pt. III)
Hello lovelys! Incase no one told you today, I think your spectacular!
Also, lets be real. This part really shows how much I love Buff Techno
Warnings: mentions of violence, swearing, blood
Tumblr media
You couldn't believe what you were hearing. The Emperor was asking you to sit and eat with him. With his family. You didn't want to come off rude or impolite, so you simply nodded and walked over to the remaining open seat. Phil pulled the chair out for you a bit, you lowered yourself onto it and pushed yourself in.
To say the room was beautiful was a understatement. The table was made of elegant dark oak, the edges lined with detailed gold. The chairs matched the table with wood. But the seats had a plush Black velvet cover over the cushions. The backs of the chairs stood taller than you, Techno's chair was the most detailed and the tallest out of them all. When you glanced up at Techno you were only met with the skull staring forward.
You honestly became nervous now. Your hands grew clammy as you held a bit of your cloak. Yesterday you had no problem being in front of this family and now you were terrified of offending them. The Family was known for being nothing short of dangerous, and blood thirsty. Yet when you look to Philza, or Wilbur who sat in front of you. You couldn't see how, they were perceived as dangerous. Don't get yourself wrong, you saw how Techno could be seen as terrifying, the man stood at well over 6ft, maybe approaching 7ft?
Wil watched you a bit, taking note of the complex look you had. "So where are you from?" He asked simply, taking a drink of his milk. "Dadza said you were wearing really light clothes when he met you." The boys tone was casual. Trying to set your wild nerves at ease.
"O-oh, I'm from a little village in Madagascar" techno's mask faced you as you spoke. Showing you had his full attention. "It's pretty... small..." You tried of how to explain it but, every way you turned it in your head, it was still bland.
"What's your village like? For the small size is it well off or strugglin'?" Phil inquired. At this a few butlers came out with platters of food. They placed a plate full of eggs, toast, sausage and oatmeal in front of Techno, Phil and you. Talk about a meal fit for a king- no pun intended. Techno only nudged his mask up a tad more. His mouth now visible more. Your eyes lingered on him. A slight scar could be seen on his lip, it looked a bit fresh if your being honest. You averted your gaze before he noticed your lingering eyes.
"It's... struggling. We were slightly larger, but years ago there was a raid by some Pilliagers" you couldn't help your face twist into a bit of disgust. After how they humiliated your village, and father, you couldn't help hold a high distaste for them. "They ransacked what we had. The men of our village defended what they could, but too many lives were taken if you ask me." You took your fork into your hand, starting to cut up the egg.
"Did you loose anyone close to you?" Phil spoke between bites. Only speaking when his mouth was empty. You hummed and nodded as you chewed your food. Waiting to respond out of courtesy.
"I lost my uncle, but that luckily was all. My father was injured too, but he survived.” your eyes scanned your food, slightly pushing the food apart so it wasn't touching. “I was too young to understand when it happened, but I guess one pillager took a swing at his leg. It never healed properly since during the attack, the Pilliagers targeted the women and children mostly. Who for the most part were in charge of medicine and occasional potion brewing" You could feel Techno's lingering eyes on you. He ate in silence only listening.
"I'm sorry to hear of your uncles demise. however, we are glad that you are ok." Phil said, resting a hand on your shoulder reassuringly. You smiled gently and nodded. the action was similar to that of what your father did. Even if Phil didn't recognize it, the little actions he did put you at ease.
Everyone ate for a bit longer. the sounds of silverware and plates clinking were the only sound that filled the room. Techno finished his plate first. Neatly setting his dishes together. Phil and I worked at our plates still. Mostly because we were the ones talking. "What made you get into Smithing?" Phil asked. Having previously recalled you mentioning the blade was your creation.
You took a sip of Orange juice to clear your throat of food. "When my father was injured our family suffered. Smithing was how we made money. My father couldn't stand long- he still cant. even if he could, I'm pretty sure the hammer would be too heavy for him." You paused thinking a moment. " I think I was eleven or twelve when he started showing me the tools and the trade. After a few months I could put a tool out. By no means was it good though.” You could still remember the first tool you put out. It was a twisted, warped mess. At the time you were proud, but now you rather not admit it was yours. “By the end of the year I at least could put something worth a show out. Ever since then I just continued. I didn't know how to sew or weave like my mother so I never strayed from the forge."
"It was somthin' in your blood" Phil commented. You tilted your head slightly as you ate a bit more. Starting to feel utterly stuffed. "A lot of trade's or artistry’s get passed down so long that it just becomes part of their heritage, they seem to have a natural born talent for those knacks." He fallowed up with. "Techno is like that with sword combat" you herd a sound of disagreement from under the boar mask.
Wil decided to chime in now. "If your blade pasts the test, what will you do with the money?" You thought a moment. In your heart you knew you had no use for it really. Your father and village however did need it.
"I'll probably give it to my village and my father." It was a simple and cliché answer but you meant it. "I have a roof over my head at home, parents who love me, support me. For once I wanna support them." You set your spoon down. Only having ate half your oatmeal, feeling too full to finish. "My village also needs the help. The baker. The farmer. They all could use a bit of spare change." You looked up from your plate to face Phil. His eyes were kind. They glittered like your fathers, when he was proud.
"Your very kind to offer your riches to others." you didn't expect Techno to voice his opinion. But you graciously took his complement. Your cheeks a faint pink. As you nodded. He moved his mask back to where it fit comfortably. He stood up from the table. the action commanding attention, The mask faced you. "Fetch your blade. I wish to test it."
Tumblr media
Ok now the nerves really set in. You stood outside on a snow covered training ground. Your head was covered by a cozy fur lined cloak. Beside you stood Wilbur, and Philza. You had the cloth wrapped sheath in your hands firmly. The sword secure in it's place. Waiting for someone to release it and show the strength it held.
You were unsure where techno was, he was supposed to give the test but as it stood, he was nowhere to be seen. That is until he turned the corner with a thick wooden log over his shoulder. You couldn't help how your jaw dropped. You knew he had to have some strength but you didn't expect him to turn the corner with a good size Hickory log. He dropped the log in front of Phil, Wil and I. Next to it was a rather large block of ice, and a Anvil. Once Techno situated the log securely in the snow he unchained his cloak. Handing it off to Phil.
There he stood. This monster of a man. broad shoulders drawn back, his posture perfect. Where he looked as strong as twelve oxen, he also had a elegant, ethereal beauty. His jaw was sharp, lips drawn into a thin line. His hands, although gloved, moved with precise elegance. When he breathed a puff of cloud would push itself out of the Boar's empty nasal cavity. He looked terrifyingly beautiful.
He turned to you and outstretched his hand. A wordless request for your blade. You bit your lip. The moment had come for you to truly test it. Carefully you unwrapped the cloth, the simple sheath was the underwhelming part of the blade. however when you moved the Sheath towards Techno he made no comment on the simplicity.
His hand easily took the handle. Skillfully he pulled the blade out. The black blade shimmered brilliantly. The purple-blue pearlescent really popped against the snow. When he saw the color of the blade you could have sworn you saw his hand falter slightly. “tis’ a beautiful blade...” was the first comment. “what is made of?” he inquired.
You swallowed the slight lump in your throat. “It’s Netherite and Diamond” You didn't expect them to know what Netherite was, but the look Phil gave you shown that he very well knew what it was. Even Techno turned his head to face you. This is the part where you wondered if you shouldn't have said the true material.
“Netherite eh?...” the angle was just right, you could see into the empty eye sockets and pinpoint techno’s eyes. they lingered over your blade fondly. he seemed very familiar with that type of material.
You watched as he took notice of how the blade was well balanced. The handle was comfortable and surprisingly it fit his hands. He tossed the blade between his right and left hand. Seeing how it felt. Mentally he assumed the blade's handle would have been made small to accommodate your own hand. But he was pleasantly surprised to see you took account that maybe you would not be the one handling it. He moved the blade back to his dominant hand. Looking to the mound of ice. You felt a hand rest on your shoulder, pulling you away from Techno. You looked up to see who the hand belonged to, only realizing it was Phil. well you stood in front of Phil pressed up to him, you didn't have to look to know how much he towered over you. His wings only adding to the height. you thought it was a tad weird  that he pulled you so close, until you realized he did it to Wil was well. The action was out of protection.  your gaze shifted back to Techno. He rotated the sword in his hand once. From Phil, Wil, and your stance, all you saw was a quick movement of purple, the light bouncing of the blade beautifully as it swung. He did not delay on his swing back, it was fast and powerful. Techno simply stepped, and swung back down, hard. The idea of being on the other side of the blade seemed impossible to survive. Well he beat the sword edge against the ice, his body moved as if he was reciting a simple dance. He was testing the durability. Seeing exactly how much your blade could take. The sheer force of his hits only needed two, to break the ice chunk in half. Sliding both halves away from each other upon the swords impact. You could only watch in shock. His strength was raw and powerful. You were genuinely terrified for your little sword.
Techno didn't let up his assault. Moving from the ice to the wood in one swift movement. Continuing to strike the hard wood. The woodchips flew in the air, you averted your eyes a bit, worried the wood might hit you. After beating a decent size gash into the wood, you spared a glance back up. He shoved the sword into the snow bank next to him. Lifting the abused log up. Placing his hands on both sides of the gash, he with little struggle, tore the log in half with his hands.
To say that it wasn't a little bit attractive, would have been a lie. Your cheeks were pink again. but luckily you could blame it on the cold nipping at your face. You watched as techno looked at the log, now in two parts at his feet. He made no sound of disproval, or really said anything. He simply took the sword from the bank and looked over at the Anvil. ‘surely he wouldn't hit the blade on the metal’ you thought. Oh, don't worry he would. He looked down to the blade, judging it breifly before glancing the anvil. You looked away, you couldn't watch. the blade was going to break as soon as it hit the anvil. It was evident on why no one was able to past the test. The test was a fucking nightmare.
The only sound you could hear was a harsh ring. He did it, oh shit he really did it. Phil from above you just whistled. “tha’s a mighty blade (y/n).” you spared a glance. in Techno’s hand was your sword. structurally intact. you let out a rather large, breathy laugh of relief.
Techno didn't congratulate you, or make a remark on your blade. instead he removed a glove and pressed his thumb to the blade. He wanted to see if it was still sharp after the pure beating it just took. You watched, now unsure if this was all positive or negative. He hummed, he wanted to say he was surprised. but he wasn't. what you didn't understand, was that he was used to Netherite. He knew it took something almost godlike to break anything with that material.
Although the sword was beat to hell, when he pressed his thumb against the blade and applied pressure, it was still sharp enough to draw blood. He put his thumb to his lips. The hard metallic taste of blood filled his mouth from the cut he received. his lips only twisting into a bemused smirk.
"Your blade passes" he turned to face you. Wiping his bloody thumb on his black pants before offering his hand to you in a handshake. "You are the only one that somehow designed, dare I say it. The perfect blade."
Tumblr media
After the event that occurred out on the field you were a giddy mess. You did it. You fallowed techno down the hall. He explained that since you did impress him, he was now wanting to open the table for a discussion and a possible contract. But first, he wanted to know how much knowledge you possess.
He opened a large door that was detailed in gold. when you stepped in he fallowed. walking past you in a easy, lazy stride. You were in his office. the shelves were lined with books, many having titles about Mythology, histories of wars, war tactics, potion brewing, etc. The titles were endless. From the books alone you could assume he probably had knowledge on a plethora of subjects. The walls were high, the detailing never faltered however. Two Antarctica Empire flag's hung on the walls, framing the main desk. There were paintings, but unlike the one of the whole family you saw on your arrival. There was one of Phil and Techno, the mask painted on his face. The second painting was Tech and Wil. But similarly. The mask was present. Looking about a little more, there were also swords of all types on the walls. In the center of the celling there was a massive candle lit chandelier. A fireplace stood tall behind techno's desk. You only assumed the desk was placed there solely for the point of warmth.
Technoblade took his seat at the rather large desk. His posture, was still perfect even when sitting. His hands were folded together. The rings still adorning his fingers. Everything he did, and wore just screamed elegance. "I will give you 3k for the blade. An additional 2k will be added for your trip" he said, his voice still straight.
'Holy shit, 5k? That's far more than I thought' you were speechless. You could already imagine how the money would help. ‘Father could get the help he needed.’ ‘The farmer could build a new barn possibly’ The upgrades flowed through your mind. Hope and joy surged through your veins. "Thank you your Imperial Majesty..."
"You said you used Netherite, correct?" You nodded to him. The mask was facing you, he was quiet. But you assumed he was thinking. "Were did you find the Neitherite?" He leaned onto his desk, moving his folded hands to the desk top. Resting his head on his hands.
"A man in my village had it. It was pretty cheap to buy it off him" you thought back to the man. Trying to recall the conversation. "He uh.." you paused trying to remember it properly. "Oh- he said it was a great material when used properly. But he couldn't understand what he needed to achieve it." Techno stayed quiet a moment.
"So how did you come by the proper techniques?" He questioned. You thought back again. It was a off day when you discovered it really. You weren't trying to use it. It just fell into your pan.
"Well, I was trying to make a diamond sword for a sister village originally. But when my pan was over the fire heating, I had left the room. Not realizing the small chunk of Netherite I had on top of the mantle had somehow fallen in. When I came back I saw the discoloration of the metal, that wasn't normal so I pulled it from the fire. When it cooled I noticed it made a unusual harder substance, so from there I just started experimenting with it" he nodded and pondered what you said. He didn't linger on the subject for long however, Instead he changed it.
"I have a proposition for you. That is... if your interested of course" You looked to him. Showing he had your attention. He had mentioned something along the lines of a deal well you walked down the hall with him. "With your permission, I would like to hire you as the royal blacksmith." The skull never faced away from you. You swallowed thickly.
"You mean... I would work here?" Your brows furrowed. "I don't live anywhere close to here..." he nodded his head, shrugging a bit.
"I'm aware" he paused. "We would give you a room, Pay you weekly, you would have benefits. Access to the best quality material" he didn't rush all the information out. He simply just read the list from his mind. "The only thing in exchange, is for you to make my armor, weapons, and anyone else I deem fit for them." It was a basic comply. He wanted you to work for him. Have your craft explicitly his only.
You shifted your weight as you stood. "Do I have to make a choice now?" You were hoping you didn't have to hurry this. you were already hesitant on bringing the sword down here, but now the idea of staying in this frozen tundra had you uncertain. Yes you would live in wealth, and possible glory. But, at the cost of being over a thousand miles away from your family. You also were still uncertain of the land itself.
Techno shrugged a bit. "I mean, I'm in no particular hurry" he explained. Tilting his head to the side a tad. If you accept, you knew what it meant. Your devotion to a nation, to the royal family, to the Emperor. You really would be making a shot in the dark.
"If I work here. Could I send the money elsewhere?" He watched you. You couldn't see his eyes, but you could feel them eating away at you.
"We can arrange that." You watched him in turn. Trying to see if he had a underlying plan, or possible catch to add. "I mean, I am a lenient man" his hands unclasped. Opening his arms slightly to motion to himself.
"R-right... of course" you nodded. Agreeing with him, not wishing to anger him. He pondered a moment before he stood from his chair. The chains, and pendants around his neck jingling slightly from his movement.
"I look forward to hearing your answer"
Tumblr media
About a week had gone by before you had your answer. During the said week you started to notice the family had a slight routine. Phil would come for you in the morning to walk you to the dining hall for breakfast. after that Wilbur would either roam to the music room, or to the library to do some of his studies. Techno was harder to pinpoint, sometimes he would leave to his office, be in the library, or other times he would walk towards the room with the planes. No matter what, Phil kept you in good company and made you fell welcomed.
You choose to tell techno of your answer over dinner. Assuming it would be a decent time since that was when everyone was together. The dinner was casual. Since your stay was expanded, the boys would roam the hall’s in there casual wear instead of there more formal, business attire.
“So I've thought on it..” Your voice broke through the peaceful silence. Techno and Phil lifted there heads to address you. Wil looked up at you as well, the noodles from the dinner slipping from his lips back into the soup bowl. “I’ll work for you... if you would still have me.”.
“of course we’ll have ya’” Phil said, his smile wide. “It’s been nice havin’ someone new and different around these halls” you smiled a little and nodded to him, looking over to Techno.
“I do have two questions though...” techno gave a slight nod to you, motioning for you to continue. "If I choose to quit at any point. Could I?" Techno, hummed and nodded.
"Of course, that would only be right." a bit of weight was lifted from your shoulders knowing this wasn't a endless contract type of deal.
”My other question is a bit personal, but could I go back to my village to explain my new job to my parents? I don't feel right sending it through a letter.” You chewed your lip, hoping you weren't over stepping your bounds of what you could request.
Phil answered for Techno. “I don't see why not, me and Tech were discussing going on a trip anyway.” your eyes lit up, you would see your parents again. “You could tag along with us. of course we’ll be making trips other than Madagascar. techno was talking about visiting Russia, and France” you tilted your head a bit.
“why Russia? you already live on a ice cube” you said, humoring Phil, earning a chuckle.
“They have a few things Techno and I have been looking for” he said, continuing back on his dinner. You thought on it a moment and shrugged. nodding your head, you turned your attention back to your food.
“when would you like to leave?” you asked, curious of when you should pack your bag again. Techno hummed a bit.
“We were thinking of leaving in two days time.” He set his fork down before looking up at you. “I wouldn't worry about packing, we will not be traveling in our typical attire. We plan to dress down” Techno said as he wiped his mouth with the napkin. “I'll have some simpler clothes sent to your room”
You were a little surprised. They planned to travel, but not in there imperial attire? That's what you assumed he meant at least. Either way you were excited. Not only would you be seeing your parents, but you also would be taken to Russia and France. Man if this was your new job, you could get used to this.

Tumblr media
Chan knows what happiness is. He's felt it before in mild amounts- like the time when he was 7 and his dad bought him that toy truck he'd been wanting, or when he ate his favorite food.
As the years went by though, he found it harder and harder to feel even an ounce of that elusive emotion. It wasn't like he was a particularly sad person, either. He was just...existing.
Which is why he found you so intriguing. He watched as you rambled away between sips of your boba, accentuating your words with wild gestures. It was cute, how passionate you were about art and how happy you got when you talked about it. Chan loved making his music too-it was a welcome distraction from his hectic life. He never found himself feeling this level of enthusiasm, though.
"And yeah. That's why I think Bernini is objectively better than Michelangelo."
He smiled, nodding, though he hadn’t really paid attention to what you had been rambling about. God, he couldn't help but be fascinated by you.
This was bad. He couldn't lie to himself anymore- he was definitely starting to feel things for you that went beyond mere intrigue. It was easy to pretend he didn't like you when you weren't around...But when you were right in front of him, Chan found himself hating the way he wanted to spend more and more time with you.
Suddenly, the door to the cafe opened. You looked up when you heard the tinkling bells, a frown growing on your face as you watched Minho walk in with Miyoung right behind him.
You sat up immediately, glancing at your watch and shooting a quick, apologetic smile to Chan. “Uh, I just remembered I have somewhere to be, so-”
Too late. Minho smirked as he walked over to your table.
“Chan, thought you’d be here. Can we talk?”
Chan’s eyebrows knitted as he slowly looked away from you. “Okay, I guess.” He stood up, following Minho as the two boys walked out. You looked up at Miyoung, who offered you a shy, genuine smile before sitting in Chan’s spot.
“Hey, Y/n. How are you?”
“Hey. I’m good. You?” You said slowly, slightly cautious. Miyoung was one of those girls who hadn’t been particularly mean, but it wasn’t like she’d gone out of her way to befriend you either.
“I’m alright...” She smiled again, trailing off a little awkwardly.
Her smile seemed genuine enough, but would she have smiled at you the same if you weren’t with Chan? Probably not, You noted with slight bitterness, sighing under your breath.
“Do you want some?” You spoke up, gesturing to the untouched cheesecake in front of you, tilting your head.
She shook her head, the same smile fixed on her face. “Nah, I’m on a diet. Thanks, though.” She opened her mouth, looking like she wanted to say something else, closing it and fiddling with her fork.
Awkward silence.
“I...” Miyoung looked at the fork in front of her, avoiding eye contact. “Are you happy?”
“Hap...py?” You questioned, a little confused.
“With Chan. Are you happy?”
“Oh..well yeah, I guess.” You frowned. “Um...we’re not actually dating yet, you know that, right?”
“You’re not?” Her eyes widened a little. “Oh...the way he acts around you, I thought...” She shook her head, sitting up straighter. “Anyway, I’m sure he’ll make it official soon.”
“Hmm.” You stared at the girl, her expression a little sad as she looked up, staring out the window. You tilted your head, following her gaze to Minho and Chan, who seemed to be having a conversation.
You looked back at her. “Why’d you ask that question? Are you not happy with Minho?”
“Wha- no, I am! I just... ” She paused. “Forget it. Hey...you want to come with me to the mall later?”
You raised an eyebrow. A week ago you had no friends, and now some of the most popular people at school were lining up to spend time with you. Huh.
“Sure.”
***
“Why do you want to talk? What’s up?”
Minho rolled his eyes. “Nothing much, really.”
Chan frowned. “Why’d you take me out here, then? I’ve got to get back to Y/n-”
Minho narrowed his eyes, leaning against the wall. “Chill, dude. She’s with Miyoung. She’s not going to die if you leave her alone for a few seconds. Why do you care, anyway?”
“What are you talking about?”
Minho pressed his lips together, observing the uneasy expression on Chan’s face.
“...Whatever. Just know prom’s in a few weeks, and Miyoung’s whipped for me.” He smirked. “You better get that book fast~” He turned around, walking back towards the cafe door.
Chan watched him leave, fists clenching as he watched Minho go up to the table, greeting Miyoung and steadily ignoring you. He watched the slightly hurt expression on your face uncomfortably. He felt so much anger, all of it directed at Minho...and some of it at himself.
***
Miyoung quickly put a smile on her face as Minho entered, standing up as he slunk a hand around her waist.
“Hey, baby.” He smiled down at her. “Let’s go, my parents aren’t home~”
“Oh...actually, Minho, I kind of made plans with Y/n.” The boy frowned at that, glancing at you. He opened his mouth to protest, interrupted by her.
“Um, we were planning to go to the mall, but you can come too! And so can Chan.” She said, smiling sweetly up at him and running a finger up his chest. “Please? I’ll make it up to you later...” She winked.
“Fine.” He gritted his teeth, looking up as Chan entered, placing a hand on your shoulder.
“But we’re going in my car.”
***
Miyoung was a sweetheart, really. She just wasn’t the kind of girl you’d usually befriend- but someone was better than no one, right?
She ran her eyes over the jewelry on the shelves, humming under her breath. “Hm, I’m not sure which necklace would match my belt...what color is your prom dress?”
“Oh...I haven’t exactly bought one yet.”
She looked at you, her eyes widening in shock. “What? Prom is two weeks away!”
“Yeah, I know. I might just wear one of my mom’s old dresses.” You shrugged, looking at the brooch Miyoung was holding. “Ooh, that one’s nice.”
Miyoung shook her head incredulously, putting the brooch down and grabbing your wrist. “Come on. I’ll help you find a dress, just follow me.”
You groaned but let her pull you along, deciding to entertain her for the time being. After all, she was your only female friend in years, and you didn't want to lose this yet.
***
People passing by the two boys sitting at the table and sharing their fries would probably think they were friends. Two dudes, hanging out and enjoying a fun guy's night. If only they knew.
Minho slipped another fry into his mouth as he tilted his head. "So you're sure you're going to get the book within the next few days?"
"Um, yeah. I know she trusts me. We've gotten really close."
"Yeah...I can tell." Minho raised an eyebrow, swirling his next victim in the small tub of ketchup.
Chan frowned as he took in Minho's expression. "What's up with that tone?"
"Don't you think you're getting a little too close to Y/n? You could easily steal that book if you wanted to, you spend every day with her now and I'm sure she's left her bag unguarded around you." He smirked. "Part of me wonders if you actually want her around. If you're dragging this out on purpose."
Chan turned red, the implications of what Minho was saying making him swear internally. "Wh- what are you talking about? I only hang out with her cause you made that bet. Or I wouldn't have looked twice at her." He said firmly, almost like he was trying to convince himself.
Minho shrugged, devouring yet another fry as Chan's mind started racing, the familiar feeling of confusion rising up again.
***
"We shouldn't keep Chan and Minho waiting." You groaned, Miyoung choosing to ignore your pleas as she tossed yet another dress at you.
"Shh, they'll be fine. They're at the food court, and you know boys and their relationship with food of any kind. I assure you, they're not missing us. Now come on, I just know you'll look good in green." She smiled.
You sighed, tiredly clutching the dress as you went back into the changing room for the nth time. For the last half hour, you'd repeatedly tried on dresses to the point where you were ready to collapse from exhaustion. However, the excitement Miyoung was radiating made you want to please her...and it was kind of nice, the way she oohed and aahed each time you changed into a different dress. Was this what it's like to have a friend?
You stared at your reflection in the mirror once you managed to get the dress on, your eyes widening. Wow.
The silk was dark green, hugging your waist perfectly. The cut of the dress flattered your body like it was made for you. It was the perfect dress. You fell in love with it the more you turned around, assessing your reflection from every angle.
Slowly, biting your lip, you checked the price tag hanging off it. You sighed. Just as you thought.
You knew your mom would never be able to afford a dress this expensive. A sudden rush of guilt ran through you as you dropped the tag, running a hand through your hair as you moved to take the dress off.
For a minute, your hand paused on the zipper, your eyes travelling back to your reflection. For a moment, you let yourself imagine attending prom wearing this beautiful dress.
An image of you and Chan, slow dancing under the dimmed gym lights settled itself in your brain. You let a small, dreamy smile take over your face as you removed the dress. Even if you'd be wearing your mom's old floral dress, at least the Chan part of your fantasy would remain true.
***
You hadn't had this much fun in ages. So this was what it was like to hang out with friends. You wished you'd met Chan and Miyoung earlier.
The only problem? Minho. Your worst nightmare, in the form of a handsome high school boy with a devilish smirk and a weird, unprovoked hatred towards you. The fact that you were now left alone with him was probably the only downside to an otherwise wonderful day.
Miyoung had dashed into a shop, saying she'd be out in a second, and soon after Chan had dipped saying he had to go withdraw some money at the ATM. By pure, rotten luck, you somehow winded up sitting next to Minho on the mall bench as the two of you waited for your partners to come back.
You stared ahead of you, determined not to look at the boy sitting next to you. He'd always ignored you, treated you like you were the dirt on his shoe. You weren't going to give him the satisfaction of knowing you hated him as much as he hated you.
After a few minutes, Minho smirked, glancing over at you. "Why do you look so worried? Afraid your boyfriend's gone to cheat on you?" He asked, his tone dripping with fake sweetness.
You turned to look at him, glaring. God, this dude was so annoying.
"What the fuck is wrong with you?"
Minho's eyebrow raised slightly, as he hadn't really expected you to reply. His expression faltered for a moment before his usual sneer took over his face once more.
"There isn't anything wrong with me, darling." He said, looking up and eyeing a lady in a crop top. You followed his gaze and let out a snort.
"What an asshole."
"Excuse me?"
You turned to him, anger taking over your entire being again.
"Miyoung's a sweet girl. She deserves a lot better than a lying dickhead who can't even keep his eyes to himself." You scoffed. "You should stop using her like this."
Minho's mouth opened slightly, the slight shock giving way to amusement as he grinned.
"I'm using her?" He pouted. "Hm. I guess that is wrong...I should probably take lessons from your boyfriend, yeah? Since he's so perfect."
"What do you mean?" You narrowed your eyes, slight discomfort settling in you as the man shifted closer to you on the bench.
"Just saying." He shrugged. "Channie isn't who you think he is." Leaning in, you shuddered as you felt his lips graze your ear. "I'd watch my back if I were you, sweetheart~"
He quickly drew back as he noticed Miyoung emerge from the shop, expression neutral as he stood up to go over to his girlfriend.
What was he talking about?
***
"Hey, you okay? You seem...out of it." Chan said gently, glancing at you from the corner of his eyes as he drummed his fingers on the steering wheel.
"Oh? What- no, I'm fine." You nodded, carefully staring at your lap. Chan turned to look at you, frowning.
"You sure?"
"Uh huh." You said slowly, staring out the window as Chan drove you home. There was silence in the car, and Chan hated it. The atmosphere was thick with unspoken tension. He wanted to do something about it, but you looked so closed off and guarded ever since he got back from the ATM.
"You can...you can always talk to me, you know." He said gently, as he stopped the car in front of your house.
"I know." You mumbled, looking up at him. "I'm sorry. Thank you for today, it was fun. See you tomorrow?"
"I wake up at 5 am every day for you, now." He whined, glad your smile was back on your face. "You know, going to school that early should be a crime."
You giggled as you got out of his car, closing the door and going over to his side.
"Well then, arrest me, officer~"
Chan blushed slightly, gripping the wheel. "Bye, Y/n." He laughed, as you blew a kiss and turned to enter your house.
Chan let out a sigh under his breath. He realized slowly that for the entirety of the day, he hadn't felt all that much jealousy. He'd been too focused on you to even notice Minho's desperate attempts to induce envy in him. And after Minho's sly accusation, Chan didn't know what to believe. Could it be...
This was bad. This was really bad.

When The Lights Go Out

Two weeks.
That’s how long you’d been in the prison that was the sprawling Winchester Estate.
Well to you it was a prison anyway, to anyone else standing from an outsider's perspective, you hit the jackpot.
You, on the other hand, didn't feel so lucky.
You felt trapped, and alone. No matter what Dean did to try and make it better, no matter how close you and Jess had become over the last few weeks, it wasn’t home, and that’s the whole reason you joined that whole Sugar Daddy app to begin with. Now you didn’t even have that.
You knew that you had gotten in way too deep when you first met Dean Winchester, but damn if you didn’t know that you had gotten in that damn deep.
Now, you had lost your only home you’d ever really had, along with what felt like your freedom to live and move like a normal human being.
Dean had tried. He really had. He felt horrible about what John was making you do, and he and Jess helped you pack up everything in your apartment the day after John’s declaration. That was probably the hardest thing you had ever done. Keep up the happy couple act for Jess, while silently you felt like you were dying, or wishing that you would.
That’s when you really started to resent Dean Winchester.
If he would have just left you alone, if he  had never contacted you, if you had never got into his SUV that Friday night, you wouldn’t be in this mess, and better yet, if he would have been man enough to tell you the fucking truth about who the fuck he was, you wouldn’t be in this mess. You would have never agreed to go on that God forsaken “date” with him in the first place. No matter how much money you needed, or how fucking attractive he was.
The first week that you were here, Dean really tried to spend as much time with you as his “work” would allow. Taking you out to get ice cream, down to the peer to watch the boats, anything and everything he could think of.
You couldn’t tell if he was just trying to keep up the happy couple act for his family, or if he just felt guilty, and was trying to make it up to you.
That just drove your resentment deeper.
You were forced to share a bed with him, but mercifully it was large enough that you could throw a pillow between the two of you to use as a wall, keeping him at bay, at least mentally anyway, and still have enough room to sleep comfortably.
The first night you did that, you could have sworn the most hurt look you had ever seen on a person crossed his face, but he hid it quickly, and now when he got into bed, whenever that was he just turned his back on you, and fell asleep, or passed out, because Dean had taken to drinking a lot.
Week two started, and you barely spoke to each other inside your shared room. Only on the outside of the room did you even attempt to act like a couple with him, and that’s because you didn’t want to die.
When the second week started, John had started taking Dean on a lot more “jobs” with him, and usually they were gone late into the night. When Dean finally did stumble back in the door, he recked of whiskey, and stumbled to the bed without so much as a good night, or fuck you, just like you were another piece of expensive furniture that filled the room.
You didn’t ask Dean about his work. You didn’t ask Dean about much of anything. You found it easier just to ignore each other.
Tonight was no different. You had spent all day working on the transcript that your new job Dean had got you, just like he promised, had sent you.
You were thankful for the job. It was a nice distraction from the reality you now found yourself in, even if you knew Dean probably only got it for you to cover his ass.
Dean had been gone all day with John, which freed you up to move around the house without risk of being caught by John, who you tried to avoid with everything in you.  Something about the man just made your skin crawl. Still today you had work to do, and that’s what you did, from the moment you woke up to the empty bed, Dean on another “job”, to the point where a knock on our door disturbed you from your distraction.
“Hey woman! You’ve been hauled up in here all damn day! Care if I join you?” Jess asks, coming in without invitation and flopping down at the foot of your bed.
“Be my guest. Nothing really all that exciting here today though,” you tell her, typing away on the computer in front of you.
“You're still working? You do realize it’s almost seven in the evening right?” she asked, shock clearly evident in her voice.
Looking up at the clock on the wall, you look back down at your computer with wide, burning eyes. You hadn’t realized that it was that late. You had successfully wasted the whole day staring at this computer.
“No, I hadn’t realized it was that late.” you mumble, shutting your computer, and shoving it away from you like it might come to life and attack you, earning a smile from Jess.
“Well come on.The men are home, and it’s time for dinner. I haven’t even seen you leave this room today, so I know you probably haven’t eaten. Dean won’t be happy if you get too skinny now will he?” she said with a wink. You forced a chuckle in response, but said nothing in fear that you would blow your cover, and Deans.
Truth be told, you weren’t sure Dean would even notice you died, much less lost weight.
Getting up from your perch on the bed, you stretch and follow Jess to the dining room where you could hear the men’s voices filtering in from the hall. Bracing yourself for another acting session, you take a deep breath, and step down into the room.Thankfully, they were all so immersed in conversation that they didn't even see you two walk in.
Jess took her seat next to Sam, and you next to Dean as the maid came into the room  with the butler that you didn’t even know the name of, and started to plate everyone’s food. That was one thing that you just couldn’t get used to. People waiting on you hand and foot that way.
“Well I’m telling you Sammy, another person in the car is nothing but another liability, and Dad and I can move in and out easier with just the two of us,” Dean said, not even acknowledging you sitting next to him.
“I agree with Dean. Sam, stay here and watch over the ladies. Dean and I will be in and out quicker if it’s just the two of us.”
Sam throws down his silverware, and Jess leans over to quiet him down before he can make too big of a scene.
“When are the two of you gonna stop treating me like a child? I can handle this job, just me and Dean!”
“Well Sammy, maybe if you weren’t walking around acting like a little bitch every fucking job you were sent on, then Dad would trust you with this.” Dean said, shoving food into his mouth, not bothering to make eye contact with his little brother.
“Fuck you Dean. You think that since you’ve got a woman now, and the high table is back to kissing your pretty little ass, that you can say and do whatever the fuck..”
“ENOUGH!” John’s voice boomed, and everyone at the table froze. “Sam, you're not going on this job, and that’s final. It’s dangerous, you’re not experienced enough, that’s it, that’s my call, and that’s final.”
A defining silence fell over the room. Sam sat there brooding at his plate of food, pushing food around with his fork. Jess dared not say anything, but instead busied herself pouring another glass of wine. Dean continued to give you the cold shoulder, and busied himself with his own food.
John, on the other hand, was watching Dean and yourself with a sickening smirk on his face.
“So Y/N. My son and I will be leaving early tomorrow to go on a rather dangerous job. This one is one of the biggest deals that we’ve done in a long time, and if it goes south, it might be awhile before you see Dean again, I assume you plan to send him off properly tonight.”
You turned white as the table cloth sitting on the table in front of you, and Dean paused from eating only a moment, before returning to his meal, a little smoother at hiding his shock than you at his father’s boldness. That or he was just used to it.
You, on the other hand, had to force down the wave of bile that was working its way up your throat at John’s lewdness.
“I...I...Don’t see how that’s any of your business.” you stutter, still shocked he boldly asked such a question, much less at the dinner table.
“Oh, it’s plenty my business princess. See what we have to do tomorrow requires a lot of concentration, and I need my boy’s head in the game, and not on what he did not get last night. See sweetheart, it’s your job to take care of my son, and he’s one of my best, so I expect you to never let him leave this house with his balls….”
“STOP!” Dean yelled, shocking everyone at the table. Throwing his napkin down he shoves his chair back with force, and goes to walk out of the room, stopping only to look over his shoulder and to call you to him, the first time he’d spoken to you directly in three days.
“Y/N, come, now.”
Whatever raft Dean had planned when you got back up to your room was better than this conversation, so you quickly got up from the table and followed him there without a word, grateful for an excuse to get away from that room, and away from John.
As soon as you got to your room, you quickly thought maybe you were better off downstairs, because as soon as Dean shut the door and locked it behind you, he rounded on you with more fury than you had ever seen in the green eyes that still haunted your every dream.
“What the fuck was that down there? Do you realize you almost got us both fucked down there?!?! HAVE YOU LOST YOUR FUCKING MIND?! You have the audacity to disrespect my father, at his table, and think he’s not going to make me pay for it?”
Dean backed you to the wall before letting his fist land very close to the side of your face, literally letting you feel the breeze of the blow as he hit the wall with force, pinning you against the wall.
“Dean, how can you say that? You heard what he asked you down there?”
Dean snarled at you, and you cowered back into the wall further.
“He suspects what’s going on between us, or else he wouldn’t ask.You could have played along, but no you had to show your ass. Don’t you get it? He’s dangerous Y/N! One word and he could have you killed, and no one would ever come looking, nothing I could do would stop it!!”
Shoving off the wall and away from you, Dean poured a glass of whiskey in the expensive crystal tumbler that sat on the little table by the door. He took a deep breath to calm himself, before taking it down in one pull.
When he turned back to you, his eyes were colder than you had ever seen them, and it made your stomach curl sickeningly.
“How often do I have to apologize to you for this? I know it was my fault. I know I fucked up and pulled you into this mess. I’ve tried to tell you I’m sorry. I’ve tried to show you I’m sorry, everything I’ve done, every job since you got here was to ensure you have a future, to make sure YOU want for nothing!! Night after night, day in and day out, you walk around here mopping, ignoring me, hurting my feelings, disrespect me! This job I’m doing tomorrow is to present you to the high table, to make sure that we can live whatever life there is for us now comfortably, and no one calls a hit out on you!! Do you give a shit? Fuck no!”
Anger boiled under the surface of your skin like water in a pot, and you had to swallow hard to make your voice work as tears streamed freely down your face. How dare he try and make this all your fault. Like you had disrespected him, when he’d taken everything away from you.
“I hope your ‘high table’ kills you tomorrow, then maybe I’ll be free of you and your lies.” you spat at him, and he flinches before collecting himself, careful not to let too much show.
“Oh no baby girl. Because if they kill me, you belong to John Winchester, so you better fucking pray I come back alive.” Dean turns to go into the bathroom connected to your room, undoing his tie with force and throws it across the room.
Turning to face you, his face showed more hurt than he’d let you see before.
“You know, I thought maybe, just maybe I could convince you to feel for me what I’ve felt for you from the moment I saw you. Guess I was wrong.”
Slamming the door to the bathroom before you could say anything, you stood there with your thoughts reeling. Was he playing with you, or was he telling the truth?

[birthday fic anon] Sure, it was really just a suggestion :) Though one thing I'm thinking is, no one actually forgot or ignored his birthday, did they? Newt left early, but he didn't seem to forget? And the aurors sort of thought they were respecting Graves's wishes, though I see your point there about how that's a tough one. You'd think they shouldn't forget when Graves was missing. But yes, I'm just rambling, so if writing more doesn't work for you, that's a pity, but of course your choice.
Sorry it’s taken this long but…here you go anon!
Find it on AO3 as Chapter 2 of A Birthday Is Just Another Day
Part 2 (the fix-it)
So Newt hadn’t forgotten his birthday. Percival felt bitterrelief at that and he couldn’t find it in himself to see his selfishness as repugnant. He took in the candles, the cake and the little box Newt had run his fingersover. After everything that day Percival had thought he had no more tears yetthey once again welled up. Newt wrapped him in a warm embrace, burying his nosein his hair and held him.
“I heard you had a horrid day.” Newt rumbled. It only madethe sobs come harder, now that there was another human to share his misery withthe feelings all came back in a fresh wash of pain. “I’m sorry I was out thismorning. I did pop back at lunch of the hopes you were home but you were stillat the office. So I left you the note and sandwiches in case we didn’t crosspaths when I went to MACUSA to get you.”
Percival’s fingers gripped tightly at the back of his shirt. He didn’t want to think of today, he didn’t need the painful reminders. In thatmoment all he wanted was to be held and loved. A reassurance that he stillmattered outside of his job, outside of his capabilities. That he was stillwanted even when he wasn’t useful or had something someone else desired. Hefelt Newt move them, slowly bringing them round then he was being gently pulleddown. Percival lost a bit of time in the warm dark comfort of Newt’s shoulders, the man warm and steady against him, a firm constant against the turmoil thatthreatened to pull him apart. Not once did Newt shift uneasily though Percivalmust have been a heavy weight in his lap and his legs must have been goingnumb. Instead he was wrapped in arms, a hand rested on the back of his neck ina grounding pressure. It felt safe and for the first time that day it didn’tfeel like Percival was struggling to hold himself together all alone.
Eventually he raised his head, the candles were burninglower in their holders and the candles on the cake had been frozen mid flickerunder a stasis charm. His eye found Newt’s who smiled at him warmly. Almost onautopilot Graves gravitated towards him, lips seeking further comfort from softkisses. They pulled apart when Newt chuckled, having to break the kiss. Hescratched at his forehead where the flower crown still sat askew Percival’shead had tickled him. Gently, Newt reached around him and grabbed the smallvelvet box on the plate. They stared at each other before Newt broke thesilence.
“I’m not sure if now is appropriate to ask all of a sudden. But the surprise has been ruined either way.” He glanced down at the box he wasfiddling with. Percival lay a hand on his, stilling them.
“I’m not sure if I want to remember today in all the yearsto come.” He sounded sad and weary but Newt nodded and slipped the box out ofsight into a pocket.
“Perhaps you’d like to have dinner with me still? I cookedyour favourite while you were down in the case.” It was a hopeful question andPercival could only kiss him once more before getting to his feet and takingthe other chair by the table. Newt flicked his wand, inconspicuously rubbingfeeling back into his legs where he sat. The food started to float towards themwhen something twigged for Percival.
“Wait. You said you went to MACUSA?”
Newt hummed in response but made no attempt to elaborate.
“What-. What did you do there?” Percival asked cautiously.
“I went to find you. See, I knew about having the afternoonoff and got a bit worried when you didn’t come home for lunch. Except when Igot there you’d already left.”
“Oh.” Percival didn’t know what to say to that. He lookedback down at his half empty plate and felt his appetite waver.
“Tina explained everything though.” Newt’s voice turned coolat the memory, he could almost feel Percival’s pain.
“So you know.” He was almost ashamed of it. Percival feltexposed all of a sudden, the shame of his subordinates not forgetting hisbirthday but rather forgetting that last year it wasn’t him they tried tocelebrate with. He still couldn’t decide which was worse. Quietly he placed hisknife and fork down and reached for his glass to disguise freshly wobbling lipswith a sip.
“I do.” Came the soft reply. “So I gave them a crash coursein common human decency.”
Percival almost choked on his drink.
“You what?”
“I gave them a crash course in common human decency.” Newtrepeated more slowly as though speaking to a child.
“How? What even is that? How did they take it?”
“You don’t want to know.” Newt grinned slyly at him. “Noweat up, we still have your cake after this.”
The cake was indeed wonderful and when they slid into bedthat evening Percival held protectively by Newt, he thought that perhaps theevening of his birthday wasn’t quite as awful as the day had started out to be.
Next day he walked into work and tried to ignore the glanceshe was getting. His aurors flashed him remorseful looks but said nothing. Alltheir files and reports were on time, precise and he didn’t have to send any ofthem back to be rewritten. It was a miracle in itself. He cut off Goldstein’smumbled apologies with a curt interruption and told her to get back to work. Itseemed to do the trick. Over the course of the week things slowly settled down, reports became their usual sloppy quality and the sad glances and whispersstopped. Things returned to relative normal after that and Percival was quietlygrateful for it.
Months slipped by, Newt came and went on his travels butspent most of his time with Percival when he had a few weeks at a time to be inone place. It was their usual rhythm of unpredictability which was a softcomfort to the both. Newt was off on another wild adventure chasing rumours ofa new breed of dragon. In the morning Percival got up, made himself a cup ofcoffee and lamented the fact that the past week had been so quiet and peacefulat home. There were no occamies to unwind from around the lights, no nifflerpawing at the door of the trinkets cupboard. He even missed the roar of thenundu he could hear every morning when Newt went down for his morning rounds. It was quiet, it was calm and he’d never realised how bored he could be withoutthe chaos of Newt and his creatures.
There was no incentive for Percival to linger in his homethose mornings. So as soon as he was ready he left for work. Most days he wasthe first one to arrive and sometimes last to leave. At least it didn’t leaveroom for anyone to question his dedication to his job. That morning he strolledinto the building. He enjoyed work but not to the point he’d rush in to getstarted on his paperwork. The memo-mice would wait patiently for him no matter whenhe got there.
The elevator ride up with Red was quiet and uneventful evenif the elf gave him a more sour look than usual. The halls were quiet as hewalked towards his department. He paused outside the door as he hears lowmutterings. It was unusual and for a second he thought he’d heard Newt’s voicefrom within. Percival dismissed it as wishful thinking and his imaginationrunning wild and pushed the door open.
Confetti fell around him in a blustery storm of soft paper. Abanner hung from the ceiling – it read “Happy 10th Anniversary” andeveryone from the department was crowded under it with wide, hopeful smiles.Percival’s eyes darted to the calendar but nobody’s birthday was written in andhe couldn’t think of who in the department had been married for 10 years.
“Oh dear.” He said. “I think I ruined the surprise forsomeone else. Shall we get the confetti back in?” His wand was already in hispalm, spell on the top of his tongue when Goldstein stepped up to him.
“Happy anniversary, boss.” She smiled at him and pressed asmall, carefully wrapped present into his hands. Slowly, one by one, all theother aurors came up to him, some bearing a gift while others just patted himon the back and handed him an envelope. Percival was bewildered. By the timeSeraphina approached him with a bottle of the finest firewhiskey he knew moneycould buy he was floundering, speechless and so so lost.
“10 years as director, that’s quite a record Percival. Wasbeing the youngest DMLE not enough?” she teased him gently.
“It’s been that long?” he muttered in surprise.
“And longer with you as not only my right hand man but oneof my most trusted friends. Happy anniversary.” The bottle was placed on thedesk next to him and he was given a quick peck on the cheek. “I have to get towork now, but pop by one evening when you’ve got the time. Your company is alwayswelcome.”
She left and behind her stood a widely smiling Newt. He wasmore tanned than before he’d left and looked a little more wild than usual. Notcaring who was watching Percival strode towards him and swept him up in a hug.Newt laughed delightedly and enveloped Percival in his arms.
“I didn’t realise you’d be back so soon.” Percival laughedbreathlessly as he held Newt by his shoulders an arm’s length away to get agood look at him.
“Surprise.” Newt grinned back. The aurors had quietlygathered around them. For trained professionals they were suddenly doing anawful job of disguising their loitering interest. Before Percival could grumbleat them to get back to work Newt stepped away and flicked his wand. A cakedrifted in from the kitchen area, 10 candles alight on it. It took a lot ofwill power for Percival to keep his emotions in check but he was left with nodoubt that despite his best efforts his face flickered through a series ofemotions. The cake came to a gentle floating stop in front of him.
“Make a wish.” Newt encouraged him. Percival only took amoment to think before he closed his eyes and blew. There was a slight pop anda flash of green light which had him blinking in surprise. Where the candleshad been, the cake now had a small velvet box floating just over the middle ofit. As he watched it slowly swung open to reveal a simple golden band. Helooked up at Newt whose smile was filled with hope.
“Marry me?” he asked. Percival grinned.
“Always.” He said and Newt was launching himself at thedirector. The cake forgotten almost fell to the ground, the spell Newt had caston it to float forgotten in his haste to get close to Percival. It was onlyGoldstein’s quick thinking which prevented such a disaster. The aurors aroundthem cheered and once they surfaced from their kiss, rings fresh on fingersthey were congratulated. After a breakfast of cake and absolutely no work heand Newt were ushered back out the door with well wishes and wolf whistles.
While it didn’t erase the memories of his disastrousbirthday out, it certainly helped ease the old hurt which he’d managed to allbut forget about. However, for the first time since then he was genuinely happyto that particular group of people working for and with him.
