Do you have any recommendations for any combat-focused games? For example, I love the combat of D&D 5e and how players have to be resourceful with what moves they’ll use against enemies, and I like that there are a lot of chances for players to shine in combat. However, any recommendations does not need to be similar to 5e!
THEME: COMBAT
These games are about fighting monsters, fighting angels, and fighting your inner battles.
Infinite Revolution, by gwencie.
A LIGHTSPEED EXOSUIT DOGFIGHTER RPG
A TURBINE IN YOUR HEART, FOREVER SPINNING.
A SOLAR SYSTEM—YOUR SYSTEM—UNDER THREAT.
YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS IN ARMOR MADE OF STARLIGHT AND DREAMS, AGAINST THE NASTIEST BASTARDS ENTROPY CAN MUSTER IN A BURNING KNIFE-EDGE DANCE ACROSS INFINITY—
This is INFINITE REVOLUTION.
In Infinite Revolution, you play as a Revolver—a human whose spirit burns so hot, quick, and bright it would reduce their atoms to ash if for not an implanted turbine called a Revolver Drive. A race of entropic predators called the Veil has swallowed most of your system, and now it's time to take it back—for yourself, for your friends, and for everyone back on Earth. They're counting on you.
The basic idea behind LUMEN games is not what kind of skill you are using to complete your objective, but rather how you attempt what you are trying to do. In Infinite Revolution, these three approaches are called Roar, Hiss, and Sing Players roll an amount of d6s based on the points they have in their chosen approach, and use the highest die rolled to determine what the outcome is. Each class option in LUMEN games tells you something about your character’s style of combat, and gives you guidance about how you might want to complete the missions you are sent out on.
Blazing Hymn, by Peach Garden Games.
At first, when we called them Angels, we meant it. Their flawless crystalline forms caught the sunlight in dazzling colors, and their radiance set our hearts at ease. These otherworldly creatures didn’t come from any planet we could identify, but we knew the second we set eyes on them that they came from somewhere beyond us. Then the slaughter began.
Now, we call them Angels literally. We know what they are. They have come from Heaven to massacre us.
We will not let them.
Inspired by Neon Genesis Evangelion and Senki Zesshou Symphogear, this action-heavy TTRPG takes you to a future where music is humanity's only weapon against the armies of Heaven.
Will yours be a song of pride? Of violence? Of regret?
Build a Hymnal unit, a music-powered anti-Angel battlesuit, and take on missions to protect humanity from destruction. The songs you choose will change how you play, protect you from damage, help you build up power and protect your teammates.
Blazing Hymn is yet another LUMEN game, with a different premise but the same hunger for power-fantasy. Players will have a considerable amount of creative control over how their weapons manifest - and each class of weapon has its own arsenal of powers to choose from. What is interesting about this kind of game is that while you’re still engaging in combat, your weapons are based around music - and that might change how your table decides to describe combat. All of these chances for creativity give your players ample room to shine! There are two official supplements for Blazing Hymn: Rhinestone Revenge, a starting scenario, and Ashes to Ashes, an expansion for after your party has dealt with a major threat.
Boot Black, by Dagger Press.
Relive your favourite action movies and fiction! Be a fearless commando or a wasteland wanderer, and roll a whole bunch of dice. Boot Black delivers tense, gritty combat with minis on the tabletop (or your favourite VTT)!
This booklet contains everything you need to grab some friends and have an exciting cinematic adventure. Creating characters is fast and easy, and so is setting up the battlefield! Use d12s to test your skills--push through barbed wire with Grit, or crash a truck through a gate with Speed! Choose your weapons wisely, since they determine which dice you roll and how you'll engage the enemy. Choose perks to support your squad or go in guns blazing.
The game is designed for 1960’s-style warfare, but can be adapted for post-apocalyptic settings, futuristic settings, etc. The game uses a number of different polyhedral dice, depending on the kind of check you want to make and what weapon you’d like to use. While this game doesn’t require a dedicated hex map, it does recommend using index cards to sketch out how different areas are linked to each-other and map out courses of action. Much of the game is focused on gaining ground and finding advantages to use against the enemy - so if you’re mostly looking to set up obstacles for your players to overcome, Boot Black might be for you.
Steel Tempest, by mburnamfink.
Tempest used to be an peaceful planet, another growing colony on the human frontier. Then a survey team found the Anomalies, artifacts of unknown provenance that violate the laws of physics. Every CorproState arrived looking to unlock the power of the Anomalies, and the Interstellar Confederation imposed a quarantine to prevent the Anomalies from getting out. Corporate rivalries turned into clashes turned into hostilities turned into war.
That’s where you arrived. You’re a jockey, an elite mercenary piloting a customized war machine called a frame. You take contracts from MercNet, fighting a fragmented war where strategy and objectives are secrets held by your paymasters. A contract may see you shooting at former allies or defending a fortress you once attacked. You fight for money, for pride, for escape from your ghosts, because you can’t imagine anything else.
Steel Tempest uses Charge, a stripped-down version of Blades in the Dark. Unlike Blades, however, it contains a resource called Momentum that your characters gain on successful action rolls, and can be used gain bonuses on future rolls, or mitigate consequences. The game comes with lists of weapons to wield and factions that your characters may be up against, allowing the group to flavour the combat scenario as they like. As mercenaries, the idea behind the missions is pretty standard: go in, complete the objective, return and get paid. Simplistic, with plenty of opportunities for weird enemies and supernatural problems for your characters to overcome.
Bloodstone, by Matteo Sciutteri.
The city of Heliwyr is damned. Decades ago, a mad priest officiated an ancient ritual, awakening a wicked force that branded every inhabitant, corrupting their blood. On nights with a blood moon, the curse awakens, depriving the inhabitants of their minds. Those who decide to follow the path of the priest, voluntarily feeding on the corrupt blood of people, become Apostles: almost immortal creatures, with bestial features, devoid of any humanity.
BLOODSTONE is an action-packed horror tabletop roleplaying game with a dark, gothic feel. The players are a group of hunters sent to the city of Heliwyr on a blood moon night to hunt down an Apostle attempting to ascend, opening a gateway to the realm of the Ancients. The game has a high pace: the Hunt is a race against the clock. BLOODSTONE is designed for one-shot games: every time we play, we play different Hunters, who will face new obstacles and challenges every time: the blood moon nights in Heliwyr never end.
This game takes much inspiration from Bloodborne, and contains the same gothic feel. Your characters will hunt monsters in the cursed city of Heliwyr, using resources such as Blood, Stamina, and Insight to weather Harm, fight with their weapons, and summon Ghosts. The game is Forged in the Dark, so you’ll roll dice pools with the goal of getting a 4 or higher - and even if you get a 4 or a 5, you’ll still be wrestling with a mixed success. The tiered success options make the game feel more brutal, and pushes your characters to their limits.
Bloodstone also has a downtime mechanic called the Workshop, which is a place where your characters can rest, recover, and pray in front of the tomb of the first hunter. The cyclical nature of your quests is what makes this feel like a souls like rpg, so if you like the idea of grinding forward in a bloody hells cape, paying a heavy cost to make forward progress, this game might be for you.
Biocalypse, by Club Xero.
Biocalypse is a survival horror RPG for 2—6 players, inspired by Resident Evil.
One of you is the Game. You control Parasol—the diabolical genetech corporation whose dangerous experiments are running wild throughout Civet City—plus their grotesque creations and everything else in the world besides the players. The players are members of special ops task force SAVIOR, or they’re ordinary people caught up in the chaos, or gifted civilians with a connection to Parasol and its evil plans (maybe trying to stop them, maybe they helped create them).
Battle the monstrous creations of sinister genetech firm Parasol. Hunt for weapons and precious recovery items. Find an exit or saferoom before it's too late! There are three character types, each with a unique special ability: SAVIOR task force members excel in combat. Average people have luck on their side but never know how much. Gifted civilians have inside info on the outbreak, which lets them ask the GM for hints. The game contains procedural level design that maps locations (like abandoned hospitals and secret laboratories) as you explore, plus populates them with NPC survivors, hazards, clues, lifesaving gear, and horrific monster encounters.
This game is steeped in a weird and horrific world where viruses threaten your character regularly. There’s regular monsters of course, which can whittle away at your hit boxes, but getting infected with a virus may change a character’s appearance, give them new powers, or whittle away at their humanity. The game has three modes: Story, Survival, and Puzzle. Story mode is for introducing new characters, and figuring out what the party wants to do next. Survival mode is akin to a dungeon crawl - characters move through a location, avoiding enemies and traps as they try to find the exit. Puzzle mode allows the GM to give their players a series of clues, called keys, to help them get past a complex obstacle. Solving Puzzles is likely to happen while the characters are trying to escape a Location, and thus interacts quite a bit with Survival Mode. If you really want to test your player’s wits, this might be the game for you!
Some other games that are heavy on combat that I've recommended in the past:
Blood Neon, by Radmad, a game about protecting your dimension from horrifying monsters.
Brinkwood, by Far Horizons Co-Op, a game about castlypunk revolution against vampire capitalism.
Disaster/Peace, by A Couple of Drakes, a game about magical girls fighting powerful villains while battling their own internal darkness.
Drifters, by Gila Rpgs, a game about cursed gunslingers searching for purpose.

Remember when i draw that chibi art? This is basically the continuation. Enjoy~
Primo: " . . . ", lets out a load sigh, "Fine, prove to me that you have it in you now! Last Round, human!"
Primo gets her back up on her feet and returns to his Duel Runner. Despite the minor injuries she has she also got back up onto her duel runner. Ones she was ready the two started the engines. The two activated Speed World 2 and got ready.
"Ready, Set, DUEL!", the two yelled and took off. While Primo started behind her, he easily overtakes her into the first corner.
"I'm going first!", Primo said, a white line appears faintly over the track as he got to his main phase 1. They each gain 1 speed counter for the turn. "I play Wise Core in defense position and set two cards face down. This should be enough for the start. I end my turn."
Primo speeds up while Livia even has a hard time keeping up with him. "My Turn!", she yelled and drew a card for turn. "I play Maiden with eyes of blue in attack position.", the monster appears and Livia checks her hand, she also had Seer with Eyes of Blue, she could go into a synchro . . . but she needs to destroy the wise core without a card effect. "I activate the effect of Seer with Eyes of Blue, if i control a Eyes of Blue monster i can special summon it to my field.", she summons the Seer, " When Seer is special summoned, her effect activates, i can add one spell or trap card that list Blue-Eyes or Eyes of Blue in its card text!". She searches out Traitor of white. "Hmpf, i know what you going to do Livia, spare me the trouble and don't, unless you want to lose this badly.", Primo said, he seemed fully aware of what she wanted to do. This irritated her a bit and she doubted her play a bit now, perhaps she should do a different approach. She looked at her monsters, perhaps an XYZ would be better. "I-i build the overlay network. XYZ Summon!", she took her two monsters to create a new monster, Sylvan Princessprite. Primo seemed less impressed, in fact he could tell she was intimated by his comment, he shuck his had. "By detaching an overlay unit Princessprites effect activates, it allows me to excavate the top card of my deck, if its a spell or trap card i can add it to my hand, otherwise it is send to the graveyard . . .", she looks at the top card of her deck, it was the white stone of ancients. It is send to the graveyard. "I set two cards face down and end my turn. During the end phase White Stone of Ancients effect activates, i get to special summon a blue-eyes monster from my deck! I choice Dragon Spirit of White!.", a large white dragon appears on the battle field. "When this card is special summoned i can target one spell or trap card on your field and banish it! I will take the left one!", the dragon fires a powerful blast at the set card. "Not so fast, i will activate the trap card, Twin vortex! I destroy one monster on my field and one on your side of the field! I target Wise Core and your Dragon Spirit of White!", The two monsters are destroyed then the trap card gets banished. "Sense Wise core was destroyed by an effect i get to special summon the five pieces of meklord emperor wisel! COME FORTH!", Wisel attack, Carrier, Guard, Top and Infinity all appear on the field. " Now combine into Meklord Emperor Wisel!", the five pieces come together to assemble into Wisel. "Oh no . . .", Livia said, of course he'd do that as soon as possible. Good thing she didn't synchro summon, but she also wasn't sure what to do yet.
Primo draws for turn. "I Tribute wisel attack to summon Wisel attack 3 to power up up my monster!", the old part detaches from Wisel and the new replaces it. "Now Wisel can deal piercing damage. Now, lets destroy that little monster of yours, go Wisel attack! Stainless steel slash!", Wisel attacks Princessprite. "Wait! I activate the trap card majesty veil of white. I can reveal a Blue-eyes monster in my hand to negate your attack and inflict a 1000 points of damage to you!", She reveals Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon. Wisels attack is negated and Primo takes 1000 damage. "Hmpf, i set a card phase down and end my turn.", the attack slowed down Primo and Livia took the lead. "My turn!", Livia drew, and it was perfect, it was a blue-eyes white dragon. "By revealing a Blue-eyes White dragon from my hand i can special summon Blue-eyes alternative white dragon!", the large dragon appears, roaring loudly. "Then i'll activate his effect, i can destroy one monster on your field and i choice Wisel!", Primo was surprised, the dragon fired a lightning blast at Wisel destroying it. He growled a bit. "I activate my trap card, Mektimed detonate. When a meklord i control is destroyed, i can destroy 1 monster on your field with the lowest attack.", Princessprite is destroyed. However Livia was confident. She could do something more. "I activate my spell card, Blessing of White, it allows me to special summon one eyes of blue monster from my graveyard. i choice the maiden! Then i will use her and Alternative to synchro summon! Come out, Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon!", the two monsters summon a new dragon, sense Wisel was gone, she thought it would now be safe to summon. "Alright, Blue-Eyes Spirit dragon, attack!", the dragon attacks directly dealing 2500 damage to Primo leaving him with 500 life points. "For a moment i thought you had something, but you are just playing into my hands, Livia.", Primo said. "What!?", she replied. "Uh . . . i-i end my turn . . .!"
Primo draws. "I activate limit reverse, it allows me to special summon a monster with 1000 or less atk from my graveyard and i choice Wise Core. Then i will play my Speed Spell Lightning Rod, by removing 2 speed counters i get to destroy one monster on my field and i choice wise core. Heh, and you know what that means.", Wise core gets destroys which allows Primo to resummon all pieces of Wisel and ones again have him on the field. "Meklord Emperor Wisel, absorb that synchro monster!", Primo commanded. "H-hold up! I activate Spirit dragons effect, i can send it to the graveyard and special summon 1 level 9 or lower light dragon synchro monster from my extra deck!.", Blue-Eyes Spirit dragon vanishes and makes way for a new monster. "Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon!". "Ts, fine then, i set a card face down and end my turn." Livias turn comes around. "During my standby phase Azure-Eyes activates its effect, i can special summon 1 normal monster from my graveyard and i choice Dragon Spirit of White."
"Not so fast, i activate convert ghost! By banishing one machine type monster from my graveyard i get to negate and destroy your card!", Primo yelled. While the effect is negated the monster isn't destroyed. "Azure-Eyes is protect from destruction until the end of my turn after it was summoned.", Primo seemed unfazed by that. "I activate white stone of ancients effect in my graveyard, i can banish it and add one blue-eyes monster from my graveyard back to my hand, and i choice Alternative White dragon!", she returns the monster back to her. "Just like last turn i will use Alternatives effect to special summon it!", The dragon returns to the field. "Alternative White Dragon activate your effect, destroy Meklord Emperor Wisel!", she said. "But now, i activate my trap card, Infinity Guard Formation, by negating the effects of my face up monsters i can negate your effect.", Primo knew how to protect his monster, she was running low on resources while he was still going strong despite the life point diverence. Livia set a card face down and ended her turn.
"You stalled long enough, human, i will show you true power.", Primo drew for turn. "Now Meklord Emperor Wisel absorb that Azure-Eyes.", with nothing to be able to stop the effect her monster gets absorbed which fuels Wisels strength, bringing him up to 5000 atk. "Now i'll play Opti-Camouflage armor. This allows a level 1 monster i control to attack directly and i choice Wisel!", Primo laughed, "Time to take out this pest. Meklord Emperor Wisel, attack her life points directly!"
Livia had no more cards left to prevent the attack, Wisel attacked her directly dropping her life points to 0, knocking her of the duel runner and injuring her somewhat badly. The duel ended and Primo pulled up next to her, she had no more strength left and a large slash mark was on her arm and her helmet. Primo sighed. "You are such a beginner . . . i do not see why you gained Wisels blessing, but i guess it will take more time for me to find out.", He picks up Livia and gets back on his duel runner with her in his arms. Using Technopathy he controls her prototype duel runner into auto pilot mode to bring it back to the Duel Bot facility he took over. With his free arm he drove the duel runner while holding Livia to take her back safely and treat her injuries.

WHAT THE HECK IS UP WITH PARADOX CONTROLLING A SIGNER DRAGON : A META
because this was a question that was plaguing me and with little confirmation of anything, i just … went on a roll with speculations, namely paradox as a psychic duelist. the thing though is? heck he must be One Hell Of A Psychic Duelist™, which keeps up with the "damn iliaster is just filled with superhumans” and here’s why
first things first, the only people who can control a signer’s dragon … is Another Signer, i’m pretty sure we see this … a lot. and the only other time a fake dragon has been used it’s a Fake Dragon, it’s the fake red daemon’s dragon that placido makes … a lot of copies of. and placido is Very Strong ( also durable ) despite how impulsive and foolish he is — that’s a different story for a different blog, not this one haha. however the concept isn’t that different from the machine emperor concept.
for those of you who are unfamiliar, the machine emperor archetype flat out revolves around being an anti - synchro type strategy, the machine emperors, skiel, wisel, and granel and the big ultimate one machine imperial god machinicle infinity cubic ( that’s a mouthful but meklord astro mekanikle sounds dumb ) are "synchro killers" where their effect is to steal a synchro monster from the opponent and basically absorb it, adding its strength to the strength of the machine emperor anyway uhhh machine emperors can do this to signer dragons, but it’s also shown that lucciano, placido and jose ( and aporia ) are psychic duelists in the sense that they can flat out communicate with each other and other people, as well as manifest their monsters to cause real damage —
paradox canonically shares the last ability, causing real damage with a duel monster rather than just flashy solid vision effects. this is what he does to domino city … this is what people outside the duel would see oof. paradox also causes damage without being in a duel and thus can summon a monster outside of a duel to interact with the world. this seems to be something that other psychic duelists can do, prime examples being aki, misty, or divine. also this post shows judai and yubel doing the same thing. so on that note, looping back to the signer dragons are only used by other signers ( with z - one being the exception, although arguably he never uses STARDUST, he uses shooting star dragon so i’m not really sure what’s up there … ), but a powerful duelist can have methods to at least steal them ( the machine emperor tactic ).
so, why can paradox command stardust dragon? when a signer dragon is taken by a machine emperor, every time it’s used to attack, the machine emperor still has it all wrapped up. paradox just you know- haha i’m going to lay waste to these areas using dragons but they could all fly away from me whenever they want — except they don’t. every other time someone’s tried to take a signer dragon to use for themselves when they aren’t a signer, it doesn’t seem to go well, ie. placido and the ghosts, and those things are just fakes. paradox got his hands on the real deal the proof being yusei vc "stardust wouldn’t want to keep being used by him" when he tells the nameless pharaoh to just destroy stardust — that’s the real deal. on top of that, why didn’t the crimson dragon uhhh prevent this? because surely the crimson dragon could prevent that, but it didn’t. likewise, it didn’t prevent the future from getting destroyed the first time but i digress.
the point here is the most logical conclusion is that paradox in his human life was in fact a signer, and since signer dragons are shuffled around ( shown in the duel with jack against red demon, someone with the dragon head mark had red demon dragon ), so his signer dragon was stardust. z-one literally resurrected souls, and if ( also using jack as an example ) signer power is linked to the soul, then paradox would still be able to control stardust, since the signer power is in his soul and not his body
there were other signers of his era, but the apocalypse happened so uh.

Remember i said i forgot something for the ref i made? well i guess not forget. more... held off?
Anyway, Livia does use Primos sword if she needs to. This Sword is pretty special. Aside from just being a sword that you can cut slice people up, this sword allows the wielder to slice through the fabric of space to traverse great distances or move with ease like teleportation. It also functions as a key to allow Primo to merge with his duel runner, but was also newly coded to be used as the key to start the engine and CPU of Livias duel runner. for both of them they can use the sword as a duel dis while on their duel runner. Finally it can also double down as duel disk for standard duels.
Primo does sometimes take issue in her using it, especially sense he can tell she never had anything like that in her hands yet. Buuut, sense he does act like a guide to her sometimes, he still teaches her when possible.
On another note, Livia is left hand! However she is not a left handed duelist as she duels using her right hand instead. Its unknown why thats the case, it is assumed it has to do with the Wise Core birthmark she has on her right arm that always her to summon Meklord Emperor Wisel or Wisel infinity and its pieces. Otherwise she does basically everything left handed, like wielding a sword.

I have created a Meklord Deck in Duel Links. Its not really Meta or anything, but i am having fun. Still don't know what ratios i want between all Meklords. I can hope that they maybe add the Meklord Infinity Core at some point as well which could buff this deck a bit more. All in all, its kinda fun to drop a 4000ATK beatstick for game. Plus i have 3 Wisels in my deck which is my Favorite Meklord Emperor so that makes me really happy.
Sadly i can't run Primo as much i wish i could, but he just doesn't compare to Aporias skill to add some protection to Mekanikle.
I am open for suggestions, but i doubt there is anything you can really do right now as long as the other few meklord cards are still missing
