Think Piece

I recently stumbled upon on of many online dating websites that categorize people by their gender, occupations, likes and dislikes and ethnicity. One website in particular called beautifulpeople.com, caught my eye because of its well designed, romantic homepage and its “As Featured in” section where they show that the site has been featured on CNN, The BBC, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Vogue and GQ magazine. It is unclear whether it was good or negative press.

            The Beautiful People website allows for people to sign up for the dating service, but before they can proceed, the must be voted in by existing members of the opposite sex who “hold a golden key” to the dating site. This golden key means that they are considered beautiful, there for better than the general public, giving them the so-called power to judge other potential “beautiful people”. They say that “beauty lies in the eyes of the voter” and we the viewer, are compelled to judge this person by a small 1.5’x1.5’ photo. They provide the options of “Beautiful” or “Absolutely not” and a couple choices in between.

            The website has been described as an “elite online club where every member works the door”. Their online exclusive section states “Beautifulpeople.com is the largest internet dating community exclusively for the beautiful, dedicated to ensuring members find their perfect match”.

            The Beautiful people website does not allow for any gay/ lesbian or queer relationships to exist through them. They allow for shallow, materialistic biases to occur in the already complicated dating world. This website plays into the question of “what is beauty” and answers it with a simple answer of “appearance”. What about personality, interests, career, hopes, dreams, likes, dislikes? What about those? Why does beauty come first?

                        A website that has impressed me with its pledge to catalogue instances of sexism experienced by women (and in some cases men) on a day-to-day basis. This website is called everydaysexism.com. The Everyday Sexism Project asks for the viewers of the websites to become participants to the collective by sharing their experiences, whether serious or minor, on a live feed message board.  They state, “by sharing your story you’re showing the world that sexism does exist, it is faced by women everyday and is a valid problem to discuss”.

            The website has a simple text box section where you can provide your name or initials if you wish to do so, and then type and share your story. By submitting, your story is added directly to the live feed along with hundreds of other submitted stories.

            This website has become a sort of “safe place” or sisterhood for women, and even men, to speak out in a collective way about what they have witnessed or experienced sexism. Although they are not directly making change, these stories as a collective are proof of the sexism that both women and men face everyday, sexism that we have seen on dating websites such as beautifulpeople.com.

Working on my large Wired Woman Sculpture... . The thing about sculpture is that we have to make art in the real (physical) world 🌎- a world where science 🧬 not only exists, but dominates. In this arena, it’s difficult, ‘impossible,’ or interestingly challenging to adhere to or bypass the laws of physics, for instance. . In painting and 2-dimensional work, we eventually can master the space and alternate between: a) depicting the real world in naturalistic ways, creating atmosphere and space, modeling life-like figures, animals, things, ...; and b) creating funky shapes, upside-down or surreal or sci-fi worlds, etc. The 3-dimensional world of sculpture is much harder to manipulate..., but we’ll see where I can push it in through my work in the next few decades.
