How To Winter-Proof Your Health When Temperatures Plummet
When the temperature drops to freezing, the allure of hibernation until spring is as enticing as plate of freshly baked barbari bread for me. This is especially true following today’s events, after I took a tumble on the ice outside and whacked my head off the pavement. Miraculously, my natural padding spared me, ensuring my bones remain unbroken, unlike my pride. However it was served as a…

hi everyone, your donations so far have helped mohammed (verified)
keep an internet connection so he can stay in contact with his family in sweden
get his family in gaza off the streets after their last displacement
keep all 27 of them fed
moving forward, he still needs
warm winter clothes, especially for the children, who have outgrown the few things they were able to hold onto through the family's eight displacements
winterproofing for the family's tents
medicine and medical devices (braces, wraps, etc) for his sister, whose bullet wound has been healing very slowly due to the conditions she's living in
enough to cover ongoing daily expenses (food, internet, etc)
these donations get wired in to gaza in batches, so please understand they make a very tangible difference for the iwais family on a day-to-day basis. we're very lucky that, from all around the world, we can actually help them head off looming emergencies -- like the cold weather that's currently setting in!
donate here; donors can also enter an art print raffle here.
10 USD = 103 SEK
let's get them to their next goal of 750,000 SEK by the end of next week!

emperor penguins in the world of cars (emperor planeguins) ^_^
Tumblr media Tumblr media
planeguins cant fly so they have no propellers and much shorter wings compared to other bird planes
the color of their noses reflect the beak color of their irl penguin counterpart
they waddle when on land and sort of "drive" across the water when theyre out at sea
they are naturally winterproof and also very resistant to rusting

To all of our Unovan readers,
We have been closely monitoring the Team Winter situation impacting the region and have mobilized all available forces in the region to assist with relief efforts. Team Curiosity doesn't quite have the power of Team Winter, but we do have numbers and persistence.
Our first priority will be helping all homeless civilians get to shelter to minimize the number of deaths via freezing. According to Team Winter's admins, the temperature will be reaching a minimum of -20°F (-29°C) by the end of the day. These temperatures are far too extreme for humans to reasonably survive in unsheltered, and we will be using all possible means to give those without that luxury access to it for the period of this disaster. Business owners, landlords, government officials: should you see our grunts at your door with a crowd of unhoused people at their back, it would be in your best interest to let them in. Human lives come before policy and pride, especially during times of crisis.
Our second priority will be helping those who are sheltered, but are lacking in supplies, are in unsuitable shelter, or are otherwise in crisis. Not every building in Unova is suited to handle the intense cold, and many people weren't expecting the freeze due to Team Winter's lack of an early warning. As Dr. Alston put it in a message to myself and the other admins earlier: mentioning winterproofing through your official channel on Rotomblr one time two weeks ago does not make for a sufficient early warning. I am paraphrasing him somewhat due to his vulgarity on the matter, but the overall message is intact.
Our third priority will be taking down any Team Winter grunts in the vicinity. If they wish to surrender and join forces with us to assist in the relief efforts, we will be keeping close supervision over them. If a Team Winter grunt approaches you without our supervision and claims to be there to provide aid, do not trust them. We hope to have minimal conflict with the team itself as the preservation of human life is our main priority, but should such conflicts occur, we will be resolving them by all means necessary up to and including lethal force. To any members of Team Winter reading this: consider this your only warning.
Dr. Alston will be heading up the relief efforts to the best of his ability. From what he has mentioned in the past, he has endured similar temperatures back in his home world, and knows how to fortify unsuitable buildings to handle the cold. However, he is still unfamiliar with pokemon-based disasters on a firsthand basis, so do bear with him.
May Arceus have mercy on you,
—Professor Marianne Hazel

Hello all! Day 11, and I started this about 45 minutes til.
Imagine getting snowed in somewhere with the 141 as a crew.
• Price is whittling a piece of wood that hadn't been put into the fireplace.
• Ghost is restlessly trying to figure out how best to winterproof the main room of the safehouse to keep the heating need to a minimum.
• Gaz and Soap are laid out on their stomachs and leaning on their elbows, playing checkers by firelight.
• "You're a rotten checkers player mate."
"Shut it you fuckin Scot..."
• You weren't 100 percent sure how long you'd be there, so you stood and set off to help Ghost.
• Alejandro and Rudy sat with Price, swapping stories about experiences in the mountains.
• You quietly approach the Lt, knocking your heels a bit as you walk to announce your presence.
• "What d'you want?" His tone is gruff, but you almost think he seems like a cornered animal, wary of everything and suspicious.
• "Figured I'd help out, since we've gotta wait the storm out before we get evac."
• Silence and a nod is all you get in response before he hands you an extra set of gloves.
• "Ever chopped fire wood?"
• It wasn't long after you two stepped outside that you noticed König watching. He nods to you and you wave him over, the work going smoothly with three people to chop and stack.
• After Ghost finally felt satisfied with the new pile of wood in the main room, you both settled in with the rest to share stories of wintery weather and less than ideal situations that arose from it.
• The team opts to sleep relatively clustered together, taking shifts to babysit the fire throughout the night.
• Soap, Gaz, Alejandro, and Rudy are clumped together on one end of the living room rug.
• Ghost refused to get too close, but over the night did scoot in farther as the cold encroached.
• König slept stretched out on the edge by Soap and the rest, reasoning that he took up a good deal of space and didn't want to bother anyone on accident.
• Price slept on the other end, with you between Ghost and the aptly named "cuddle huddle" since the gents refused to call it cuddling.
• Quiet crackling and occasional gusts of wind were soothing noises to sleep to, and morning brought a brutally cold but calm day.
This one is delving back into bullet list territory, and I hope that's okay with yall. Posted around 15 minutes to midnight here. Thanks for reading!

"It's getting colder..." He murmurs, mostly to himself, the anxiety that the chill breeze brings apparent on his person. Brow furrowed, he holds a hand up, feeling the cool breeze from the ocean, indicating the shifting weather.
Tumblr media
"There's a chance this island experiences catastrophic winters." And with Coco's recent departure, it's been weighing on his mind that any of those kids could appear at any moment.
"We should make sure we're prepared. We don't know what kind of winterproofing they have here."

After a couple days i think clove is finally used to me!! Taking her outside regularly definitely helped A LOTT, even though ive interacted with her in the past which probably also helped her adjust quickly, i think soon i might start slowly introducing her to my batteries! Although, i am a bit concerned on how i'll take her out to graze during the winter-- the colder season is gonna creep in soon and i expect that we'll have our first snow by october (last year it was on halloween, so im bracing for an early start to the winter). Most sources on google said that once the average temperature drops to a certain point she'll grow a winter coat, so im not too worried about the cold, but the lack of fresh grass + the frequent snowstorms are concerning.
Is it possible for me to simulate grazing in the backyard by taking a chunk of turf from the yard that's around the size of her enclosure and letting her eat that? My idea would be to place her cage near a window ( not on the actual window ofc! im not gonna put her on my windowsill, even if i tried her cage is WAYY too big for that lol ) so she can get some fresh air, while also taking care of and managing a sort of "mini backyard" inside her enclosure. Hurricane season is also approaching, so whatever winterproofing i do is also important for being able to let her get proper stimuli while keeping her safe from our crappy weather.
(Ofc, i'll still take her outside even when i do find an alternative, this is mainly just so i know shes still having her needs fulfilled even if i am literally unable to safely take her outside)
-🔋🌼⚡️
this is a fantastic question! you bring up a great concern here - i live in a pretty warm area so i didn't consider this. in the wild, cotton balls are native to warmer areas in the south where snow is light and have evolved their very downy coats to help stay warm during winter. in their native range they tend to be able to find fresh grass fine, but it's true they would struggle in deep snow further north.
you should ABSOLUTELY make an area for her to graze indoors! make sure it's near a window like you said; as long as you're taking her outside even if not to graze she should be okay with the window closed, but if you aren't able to for some reason you should keep the window open. windows block out uvb rays which is necessary for vitamin d (this applies to humans as well). due to their very light bodies heavy wind can quite literally blow them away and rain will completely soak through their coat, so keep her indoors during storms, even light ones. just remember that the size of the turf will need to be pretty large because cotton balls eat almost their body weight every day in grass!
also, try investing in a heat lamp during the coldest parts of winter if your house isn't able to heat well. cotton balls do best at around 80° fahrenheit!

Okay so the stuff under the cut needed to get out there, get off my chest, but you don't have to read it.
The tl:dr; MY LIFE IS GREAT NOW OMG
I woke up cold repeatedly last night. Partly because I do not live in a building with modern climate control. Partly because the sheets/bedding I own were purchased for me, not by me. The person who purchased them wanted to buy me a status symbol, and to their credit tried to strike a compromise between what I like and what they wanted for me, but honestly?
They bought me the type of thing that an American would say "yea that's totally winterproof" and meanwhile it only works to -3. You know, the kind of thing that says "four seasons" on it, but that's only true if the four seasons are south of the border. This would have been fine if I lived in a modern home with modern HVAC.
So I wake up tired and cranky and having an imaginary argument with someone who isn't in my life anymore. I was never allowed to say no to them. I was trained to beg them for a better solution, instead of buying my own. It was a terrible start to the day - I felt young and powerless and stupid.
Duvet shopping at 3 am was fun. Down is fluffy, wool is heavy. I wanted wool. I found one manufacturer selling a winter weight wool blanket (not four seasons!) and it was $400. My finances are... I mean I'm fine, but I can't just go do that right now. After Christmas maybe. I put the laptop away and distracted myself with Stardew Valley and hot tea until it was time for work.
My friend bought the duvet for me. As a Christmas gift. I am so blessed.
I have a lot of plans for the new year, plans that will help me buy the solutions I need to my own problems. Therapy is going well. I had a rough start today, but that's not the end of the story, that's not who I am as a person. It was just a rough night. I'm finally in a good enough spot to say that.
To all the people who I hope clicked right past this and didn't read, and to those few who chose to open this and read it all: I hope you get to where you're going. I know the building blocks of a life are hard to find, and hard to keep, and hard to nurture, especially for those of us who grew up with dysfunction as the norm. I have help now. Getting myself to a place where help was possible, where I could accept a gift without some kind of codependence being part of the contract - that took a lot of work. It was worth it.
You are worth it.

Is Shepherd a platonic yandere father to Ben? For the interactive ask! I LOVE this story!
[Masterlist] | Ask game
Thank you so much, anon! But I'm a bit confused about your question: Is it for me? I would categorize Shepard as a parental whumper, so YES DEFINITELY platonic, but yandere not really. Possessive fits better, I think.
Or is Sam asking Shepard? Because that would go something like:
・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・
Sam: Are you a...*looks at smudged writing on their notepad*... platonic, yandere father to Ben? Sorry, I think my co-writer scribbled all over this.
Shepard: Hahaha, the new generations and their silly slang *fingerguns* Yeet, am I right?!
Sam: ...
Shepard: But if you like Plato I do have a collection of his work, including the Clitophon, somewhere in this cabin. Just give me a second, it has to be right here...
Sam: The what now? Nevermind, let's talk about winterproof thermal insulation again.
