French Canadian Witchcraft: Holidays
Hello! I want to do a series of posts on the holidays I’ll be observing, some of them are already established within French Canadian, Catholic and Pagan traditions, while others are my own personal holidays to honour the spirits that are important to me. While some deities have known feast days and others do not, I decide to give them my own date. It’s my personal path holiday schedule, so enjoy! I combine Norse, Celtic, French Canadian and personal deities and celebrations. It’s a personal connection above all.
January: Wolf Moon
Full Moon: Skadi’s Day (where I appreciate Skadi’s snowbound world and realities, and purify my tools and intentions. It’s a day of activities outside in the woods on my snowshoes.)
New Moon: Skadi’s Night (where I do some introspection in the darkest and coldest of nights, recognize winter’s perils, and celebrate the cycle of death in order for new life to spring.)
February: Ice Moon
1-2 Feb.: Brigid’s Day (where I celebrate my artistic and creative energies, and I freshen up my home. It’s still winter in Canada on that day, so it’s very much staying inside and keeping the house warm and cozy. Lots of snacks!)
Full Moon: self-care, love and sex magic, personal development.
New Moon: letting go of traits and habits that no longer serve you.
March: Storm Moon
Full Moon: Athena’s Day: A day of sewing and learning weaving and knitting. It’s textile creation celebration day!
Spring Equinox: It’s still winter a bit in Canada, but it’s a day to recognize that spring’s shy signs are still there under all the stale snow.
March 17: Irish Gaelic Day. (Saint Patrick’s Day, I focus on my craft and learning of Irish Gaelic in my witchcraft. I read about Irish deities and honour them on this day.)
April: Growing Moon
Full Moon: Freyr and Freyja Day: I celebrate the turning of the season as snow melts even more, and the sun is shining brighter for longer. It’s a day to celebrate the returning fertility of the land, and animals stirring from their dens to re-enter the world. It’s waking up the earth.
May: Hare Moon
May 1: Bealtaine (this is a day where I honour the Fae and the creating spirits of the earth, and new life expanding. It’s the perfect day for a walk around a local park to see baby bunnies, and appreciate cute things. It’s also a day where sex magic is extremely potent, whether by myself or with my partner. I light candles, and do some storytelling (the Irish ones), and honour Fae deities) It’s a day for expanding one’s self-knowledge and psychic abilities.
May 21: Virgin Mary’s Feast Day. A day that was given by the church recently, but I think it works great for this month. Celebrate her fertility and blooming lilies. Hone your spirit of compassion, love, and caring. It’s a great day for volunteering in her honour. Honouring mothers.
Full Moon: Flower Moon: enjoying nature’s blooms and scents outside with a beautiful walk in a wooded neighbourhood. Extra points if you carry a lantern. It’s also a moon to learn lots about gardening and herbs, and how to use them. Great for fertility spells and nature magic. It’s a day for the Green Man and Aine the Fae Goddess.
June: Strawberry Moon
June 21-22: Summer Solstice: It’s National Indigenous Day in Canada that day, so on that day, I honour my Indigenous ancestors and research about them and their culture. I also go outside and celebrate the sun’s warmth and some Indigenous celebrations in Ottawa (where I live). It’s a day where I hone my beading skills, and work with deer hide.
June 24: Saint Jean Baptiste: a national day for us French Canadians, celebrating French Canadian culture and music. Bonfires are a must!
July: Thunder Moon
Full Moon: Thor’s Day: it’s a whole month of working out and setting up a physical routine. It’s a day where I make sure I have enough energy to run outside and enjoy the electric air of summer storms. I also watch lightning storms from inside my house (safety is key), and honour his strength through my physical activity. The full moon is great for strength spells and motivation spells.
July 26: Saint Anne’s Day: I honour her presence with sewing, and keeping my house clean and welcoming.
August: Corn Moon
August 1: Black Bear Day: I never really connected with the traditional Lammas, so I’m celebrating this personal holiday instead. On Black Bear Day, the beginnings of harvest are honoured, but mostly, it’s the time where black bears in Canada stuff themselves full of food for the coming winter. The blueberries are also out at this time of year, a favourite food for them. I honour my Saguenay roots and the black bear as an important animal spirit in my life. Baking with berries and vegetables is encouraged. Enjoying summer’s plenty.
September: Harvest Moon
Full Moon: Cernunnos Moon: recognizing the fiery energy of this god, and acknowledging his power in nature, its chaos and its order.
Dark Moon: Cernunnos the Death God: recognizing that he is a god of death as well, and that it’s a natural part of one’s life cycle. It’s a good day to research predator animal species and their needs.
September 21: Autumn Equinox: my day of Thanksgiving and family feasts.
October: Blood Moon
Full Moon: Disirblot: recognizing life cycles, sacrifice, acknowledging harvest, the Norns and the Valkyries. Freyja is honoured as a war goddess. I focus on Freyja as a death goddess on this day, and I use this day for trance work, divination, powerful banishing magic, and honouring female ancestors.
Dark Moon: Marie Magdeleine’s Day: a day where I recognize her role in witnessing death and rebirth. A day of candlelight and reading on witchcraft. Her feast day is traditionally on July 22, but that’s already a busy day, and her being there in Jesus’s final moments and her love for him really convinces me to put her holiday here, to honour her lost love and the power of resurrection.
Samhain: Ancestors’ Night, revelling in old memories, dying energies of autumn, acknowledging death. It’s a time to tell family stories and honour those gone before, and to leave out offerings for them. Researching ancestors is good too. Major goddesses of the afterlife are honoured, such as Hel, and Celtic traditions are kept, such as stories and costumes and carving pumpkins. Recognizing it as a mischievous day for the Fae.
November: Snow Moon
Full Moon: chthonic deities are honoured here, the spirits of the underground retreating for winter.
Dark Moon: introspection on death and rebirth. This is my black bear hibernation day.
November 11th: Remembrance Day. It’s a very important day in Canada, and consequently for me as a military kid. I honour soldiers that perished in battle, and honour their memory with Ottawa’s ceremonies, and reading their stories and poetry. I also research my wartime ancestors (a distant cousin who died in July after D-Day) and I find ways to volunteer for Canada’s military. Freyja as a war goddess is honoured here.
December: Oak Moon
Dec. 21: Yule (traditionally celebrate it like any other Pagan). Sun’s birthday!!!
New Moon: Darkest of moons, stay cozy and grateful you have a place to stay, and honour your shelter. Make lots of hot drinks.
Full Moon: Caribou Day. celebrate winter in all its glittery splendour!! An important animal for my indigenous ancestors, honour the caribou and its teachings
As per French Canadian traditions, my ‘witch’s new year’ is New Year’s Eve, due to my French Canadian family celebrating this day fervently!

Barefoot Dreams and the Conquest of Cozy The first time Amanda John glimpsed a Barefoot Dreams blanket, she was watching “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.” “Khloé was wearing her little leopard blanket and I was like, ‘What is that?’ Then, when I Googled it, I had a little bit of sticker shock,” said Ms. John, 32, who lives in Atlanta and whose blog, Strawberry Chic, focuses on “sharing style for the everyday girly girl.” Ms. John received a gift card, then waited for a sale, to finally buy her own. Now, “I have two or three of the blankets, maybe. I have a robe. I think two cardigans,” she said. “I’m pregnant right now with my first, and I’ve even got her first Barefoot Dreams blanket ready to go.” To look at the unassuming blob of oatmeal-colored fuzz is not to understand why celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Kate Hudson and Chrissy Teigen swaddle themselves in Barefoot Dreams; why the blankets consistently sell out during Nordstrom’s big annual sale; why bloggers, influencers and YouTubers painstakingly weigh the $180 price tag with their followers. But after a brutal winter, closing out Year 1 of a pandemic, many have sought relief in the nubby fabric: a nation of Linuses with blankets spread across laptopped laps, grasped tight in anxious fingers. “It is the ultimate comfort lifestyle brand,” Melia McGee, the merchandise director of home goods at Nordstrom, wrote in an email of Barefoot Dreams. “We see a lot of repeat customers for the brand who may start out by purchasing an entry item like pair of slippers, and expand their collection to include multiple throw blankets for every room in their house.” “That’s obviously where I’ve spent more of my money — having this sense of feeling comfortable and cozy during a time that is kind of traumatic,” said Kelsey Boyanzhu, 29, who blogs for Blondes & Bagels in San Francisco. “I make money from affiliate links on my website and I’ve absolutely seen a shift. I saw traffic to some of my most popular fashion posts plummet off a cliff.” But her December 2020 post, “Are Barefoot Dreams Blankets Worth It?” is now one of her most popular. “We’re not necessarily looking for a handbag in the same way that we’re looking for a blanket,” she said. Indeed. ‘It’s Very Spongy’ While Barefoot Dreams only recently seems to be everywhere, it was actually founded in 1995 by Annette Cook, a mother of young children who started a line of baby clothes and products from her garage in Burbank, Calif. She traveled to trade shows in Las Vegas and boutiques around the country, and she trademarked the term “CozyChic” in 2002. In 2003, Oprah Winfrey named the robe one of her “favorite things.” Ms. Cook died in 2012 from cancer, but her husband, Stan, has remained on as C.E.O., her brother-in-law Steve serves as sales director, and her son Grayson, 25, has joined the business. “She put her whole life into this,” Steve Cook said. “She hasn’t seen what it is today, but she had a pretty good idea of what was happening and where it was going.” Thanks in part to the company’s P.R. firm, Rogers & Cowan, a parade of celebrities now post Barefoot Dreams blankets; here’s Kate Hudson’s teenage son, Ryder, sprawled on a white throw, or Chrissy Teigen’s toddlers with creamy leopard print puddled at their feet. “I use mine 365. It stretches and wraps over your shoulders and feet and nothing else compares,” Ms. Teigen tweeted about her blanket in 2019. She has also touted a full outfit, top and bottoms, from the line in Instagram Stories. “She even said, ‘Oh, if you make a scrunchie, I will wear a scrunchie, too,’” said Frederic Barrouquere, the sales manager at Barefoot Dreams. “Well, we’re going to do some scrunchies!” QVC reported strong sales of Barefoot Dreams apparel in the pandemic, especially the wrap and cardigans, and Mr. Cook said that with “everybody dressing down and wanting to get comfy,” the company did exceptionally well last year and vowed “this year, we’re going to be double that.” The Hollywood stylist Rachel Zoe said she has been “a forever fan” of the company, especially the ponchos. “Their robes also make the best gifts,” she said. The exceptional softness of the polyester microfiber fabric is what seems to make fans at first touch. “The hand feel is definitely unique. It’s very spongy,” Ms. Boyanzhu said. “I haven’t felt a fabric quite the same as that.” ‘The Coastal Vibe’ “This is not your father’s polyester,” said Deborah Young, a textile historian and professor at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, of the fabric used to make Barefoot Dreams. “Microfiber is incredibly fine, like silk. We never managed to imitate silk chemically, but ultimately came closer by making one finer than silk.” Of course, Barefoot Dreams isn’t the only manufacturer of synthetic fluff. Its competitors have similarly dreamy names. Urban Outfitters offers a “Stargazer” knit throw in nubby gray, while Target’s “Stars Above” line has a velvety cream chenille robe. Even Sam’s Club has found fuzz fans with its Crafted by Catherine throw, a steal at $30. “I know I personally have tons of fuzzy socks and blankets around my house, so we wanted to add in something that we were really shopping for,” said Tori Gerbig, the C.E.O. of Pink Lily, a company that sells a $94 leopard print blanket. Pink Lily started offering more soft “stay-at-home basics” last fall. Many of these products echo the dusty palette or instantly recognizable animal pattern of Barefoot Dreams. “It really goes with the Malibu vibe, the coastal vibe,” Mr. Barrouquere said of the color scheme; the brand distinguishes colors like “graphite,” “stone,” “pewter” and “beach rock,” all subtle variations on gray-taupe — or dishwater, if feeling uncharitable. As bloggers breathlessly catalog the best dupes, the company has began running a banner on its home page warning customers of unauthorized sellers. “Wash it! That’s where the others fall apart,” Mr. Cook said. The popularity of these fluffy products — and that very machine washability — scares environmentalists, who in recent years have observed the horrors of certain synthetic fabrics on the global water supply. “Polyester in general and microfiber especially are really under scrutiny right now because of their environmental impact,” said Patrice George, a professor of textile development at FIT, who cringes at Barefoot Dreams’ beachy website and aesthetic. “All those little tiny microfibers go into the waters and they’re polluting the ocean.” It’s the very delicacy of the synthetic textile that makes it more likely to shed and shred in the washing machine, she said, “but they do feel great.” The effect can be mitigated by washing the blanket or apparel inside a microfiber-catching gadget, like the Cora Ball or Guppyfriend bag. Later this year, Barefoot Dreams will release EcoChic, a new product line made with 70 percent recycled fabric. “Textiles have always had that dichotomy of protection and revelation,” Ms. Young said. “On the one hand, what you’re wearing reveals who you are, but on the other hand, when we go home, we always crawl under the blankets. There’s something so secure about that.” “Security” is a word Mr. Barrouquere returns to as well. “You know when you’re a baby and you’re carrying one everywhere?” he said. “That’s why people get really addicted to our product. You want the sweater, you want the socks, you want the slippers. We’re just taking you throughout the day.” Ms. Boyanzhu understands that Barefoot Dreams may not be achieved, or even desired, by everyone. “The reality is, I don’t know that there’s ever going to be a way for me to say that a $180 blanket is worth it,” she said. “So I want to acknowledge that. Do I regret my blanket purchase? No.” Source link Orbem News #barefoot #conquest #Cozy #Dreams

10 Décor Tips for Decking Out Your Rental for the Holidays
If you’re a renter like me, you might know the challenge of space when it comes to decorating for the holidays (or any decorating, for that matter). You also might live in a rental complex that has strict decorating policies – especially when it comes to the holidays.
If you’re short on space or maybe have strict rental guidelines of what you can and cannot use for holiday décor, we’ve got you covered for 10 ways to deck out your rental for the holidays without losing your safety deposit.
Go Faux
Some rental complexes have strict policies against using real Christmas trees, wreaths and greenery in your rental, and oftentimes for good reason, since Christmas lights, combined with dry or dead Christmas trees, are known to cause 40% of fires during the holidays.
If your rental complex isn’t budging on the live-tree rule, Erin Fausel, Lifestyle Blogger at American Freight Furniture and Mattress, suggested going faux this holiday season.
“Consider purchasing a small artificial tree to use in your rental,” said Fausel. “Not only will this save you money if you use it year after year, but trees typically are heavily discounted right after the holidays.”
Going faux doesn’t necessarily have to be in the form of a traditional, artificial tree. If you’re looking to make a statement, skip the chain store and hit the craft store to make an alternative Christmas tree.
Swap Out Everyday Pieces
If space is your biggest barrier when decking out your rental for the holiday season, don’t overthink it when it comes to adding new decorations. Instead, pick a few textile pieces, like a throw pillow or blanket, an area rug or accent decoration, and swap them for something more seasonally appropriate.
Subtle switches sometimes make a bigger statement than over-decorating a space, so instead of focusing on bringing in as much holiday décor as possible, focus on the smaller pieces of your home.
Not only will this save you money, compared to purchasing larger-scale holiday décor, it will also repurpose the space your current decorations are already occupying, preventing your home from becoming too cramped from décor overload.
Look for other small but effective areas in your rental where you can make a cost and space-effective swaps, like hand towels in your bathroom or kitchen and welcome mats and rugs on your doorstep or entryway.
Less is More
Following the idea of swapping out everyday pieces, focusing on minimal holiday décor is key when you’re decking out your rental, especially if space is lacking. Debra Carpenter, from Nathan Oulman Realty, suggested using only a few statement pieces.
“Keep most of your decorations in storage and pull out a few statement pieces that make an impact without overwhelming your space,” said Carpenter.
If you’re finding that you don’t have the room for a full-sized Christmas tree, go mini. A miniature tree can occupy a smaller space in your home. You can also go modern by using tree branches in your holiday décor – an homage to the Charlie Brown Christmas tree.
Half-wreaths are also growing in popularity, a credit to the minimalism trend. Instead of a lush wreath, you can add style to your space with a metallic hoop donned with minimal evergreen and other festive foliage.
Use the Scents of the Seasons
A smell can fill a room in your rental in ways that holiday décor cannot, so if you’re looking for ways to make your rental ready for the holiday season, try incorporating the scents of the holidays into your home.
Scents like cinnamon, citrus, pine and peppermint are staples of the holiday season. Just smelling them can make you think of cozy winter nights.
You can purchase holiday-scented candles or essential oils, or you can try your hand at making your own holiday potpourri out of items you may already have in your refrigerator or cupboard. If you’re really up for a challenge, try making holiday “pot-pourri” – that is, breaking out a saucepan and simmering the scents of the season over a stovetop flame.
Smells can have a huge impact on mood, so filling your rental with the scents of the season can bring an extra level of happy to your holidays.
Get Creative with Your Table
Whether you’re hosting holiday guests or having an intimate dinner for two, your dining room table is often an underutilized space for holiday decorations. Up the dressings of your dinner by dressing up your table and chairs.
A holiday-themed runner or placemats can draw attention to the table. You can also purchase matching cloth napkins and napkin rings to tie in the colors and patterns. Additionally, a sprig of rosemary placed on a plate can emulate the look of a Christmas tree branch.
Don’t stop at the table: Adding subtle accents to your dining room chairs, like hanging mini wreaths on the back of the chairs or purchasing holiday-themed cushions, can accentuate the look of the table.
Other elements that can really make a statement include holiday-themed centerpieces, like miniature Christmas trees and holiday place card holders.
Use Nontraditional Color Pallets
While reds and greens are traditional colors of the holiday season, they might overwhelm a smaller-scale home if overused.
If you do use green, use it in its natural state, like the evergreen of a Christmas tree, branch or wreath. Earth tones like green and brown are striking in a natural and rustic way. Highlight this dynamic color duo with other soft tones like the gold from twinkle lights and ornaments.
Other nontraditional holiday colors, like light blue, still call to the season but without overpowering your space. Pair your blues with a polished silver for a classy, snow-frosted effect in your kitchen or bathroom hardware or tabletop dishware.
Swap your reds for soft blush pinks or metallic rose golds for a chic, dewy look to your holiday décor. Pair those with a light, powder-gray for a subtler application in accent pieces like throw pillows, blankets and plush rugs.
Reach New Heights
Where space is lacking in width, go vertical with your holiday décor. Draping lights around high areas, like around mirrors or a fireplace mantel, is a creative way to light up your home without damaging your walls and other surfaces.
Even places you don’t traditionally decorate for the holidays – like your kitchen and bathroom – can use a little love. Dress up your cabinets and drawers with miniature wreaths hanging off drawer knobs or tied to cabinet handles.
Depending on the rules of your rental complex, you might not be permitted to make holes in your walls or ceilings. If you wish to hang lights, greenery or even mistletoe for a holiday kiss, Carpenter suggested using Command™ strips instead of tape or nails.
“If you want to hang garland, mistletoe and stockings, use Command hooks with a special adhesive that won’t mar or damage your rental,” suggested Carpenter.
Utilizing the high areas of your home not only frees up valuable floor space, but also draws attention to the spaces in your home that might not get attention otherwise.
Decorate Your Front Door
Don’t forget about your front door and porch!
Since the outdoors is more open and spacious compared to the inside of your rental, feel free to be expressive and bold in the colors and patterns you use to decorate. Even a simple door wreath or festive welcome mat can make a statement against the otherwise drab, white and gray outdoor conditions.
Bold color is also a subtle way to add rental-appropriate outdoor décor. If you’re unable to add outdoor Christmas lights to your rental, ask if you can swap your porch light’s bulb with a festive red, green or blue bulb.
Make Your Fireplace Festive
If you’re planning to roast chestnuts over an open fire, give your mantel a makeover worthy of the holiday season. Drape holiday greenery on the top to tie in with your other evergreen décor.
Tapers are also a good look on top of a mantel. A striking gold is not only on-theme with the colors of the season but will stand out by the deep green. Go traditional and use Command hooks to hang your stockings by the fire with care.
Extend the warmth of the fire to your home by placing a plush rug as an accent in front of the fireplace. Tie in the metallic from the gold tapers with a modern gold firewood holder, adding beauty and function to the room.
When in Doubt, Talk to Your Landlord
Most of the time, rental complexes will list appropriate holiday decorations in your rental agreement. My apartment complex even sends an email reminder to all the residents, reminding us of what holiday décor we can and cannot use.
However, if you’re unsure of what you can use to deck out your rental this holiday season, the best thing to do is to reach out to your rental complex or landlord.
“Be informed about what you can and cannot do,” advised Fausel. “Learn what limitations you might have for decorations and consult your leasing office if you have any questions.”

Work and Play With a Side of Fries: Amelia’s Paris Fashion Week Diary

Work and Play With a Side of Fries: Amelia’s Paris Fashion Week Diary
Saturday, 7:15 a.m.
Contrary to the popular belief held by those who’ve consumed alcohol the night before, 7:15 a.m. is a pretty nice time to be awake in Paris.
I’m up to catch up on the work I missed while traveling yesterday and to start to chip away at deadlines due next week. If I learned one thing from last February Paris Fashion Week, it’s that there’s always less free time to get work done than you think. My first appointment is at 10:30 a.m., so I’m what the French call, “concentrating.”
I’m a little anxious…
10 a.m.
Done-ish, enough to go get breakfast at least. Spencer, my boyfriend, is here for the weekend and he’s helping to keep me on schedule. We go to a kind of weird place that’s definitely a tourist trap, but a croissant and jam is a croissant and jam, you know? I am still a little anxious. I think it’s the combination of my impending schedule and not totally knowing my way around and not having all my ducks in a row. But still, Paris. Also, I spot Alber Elbaz and have a spazzy moment of feeling designer-star-struck, which I didn’t think happened to me? Just when you think you’re cool!
10:30 a.m.
First stop of the day is the Peter Pilotto showroom to see the clothes he showed in London, up close and personal. It’s bright and colorful and jumpstarts yesterday’s good mood. I try on a coat. I schmooze. I relax.
11:30 am
I’m at Magda Butrym, where the collection was inspired by Dolly Parton (please let this theme continue). I fall in love instantly with the ruffled sleeves, padded shoulders, hot pink and red silks and rhinestones but… THE SHOES! I love one pair of tall boots that were about my height in particular, and some heels with removable puffy bows. It’s all so eighties; in the wrong fabrics, could very well be tacky. But these textiles are luxe and the draping is like “UGH!” and it’s all so good. Clothes like these make me wish I were a different kind of person, more balls-to-the-wall in how I dress.
12 p.m.
The world’s greatest cab driver, Yusef, has picked me up and is singing along to “Lady in Red.” He wears a very nice baby blue cable knit sweater. We bond over classic 80s music. We are instant friends and my brain does this thing it did last time I was here where it shouts super loud, “HEY AMELIA, MAYBE YOU SHOULD MOVE TO PARIS.”
12:30 p.m.
Altuzarra, though staged in the middle of La Couple, a brasserie that’s apparently a real establishment here, brings me back to New York for a moment as I’m seated between a few friends from back home. I’m not constantly with friends here in the way that I am during NYFW, so when I do run into them, it’s nice. Someone almost always has a portable phone charger, a snack and a hug.
Altuzarra’s collection reminds me of New York, too: glen plaid and pinstripe suits, a trench, a cozy shearling coat. My favorite items are the dresses: one purple dress in tie-dye velvet with a sort of modern-medieval neckline, a few with ruching and off-the-shoulder sleeves (but only if you want — choose your own adventure) adorned with glittering metallic paillettes. It’s not capital F fashion, but the collection has style. Pair with that Altuzarra’s pin-sharp tailoring and its wearer will instantly feel like she has her shit together.
1:30 p.m.
I just dropped Elle.com’s Nikki Ogunnaike off in a cab where we spent the ride chatting about how much the industry has changed since our intern days (a lot). I ate this little cake while she spoke, scooping out the inside, leaving its chocolate shell, which I offered to Nikki too late to actually be considered polite. She declined (it was kind of gross) and then had to go. Bye, friend!
Soon after, at Natasha Zinko, the designer plays with the concept of a working, successful woman who isn’t defined by her job, but rather by all the pieces that make up her personality, which she may only reveal here and there.
Then I try on these weird sunglasses that make me look like an alien.
2:30 p.m.
I quickly stop by Mira Mikati for a burst of rainbow color and a go-kart/carnival theme, then I head home to charge my phone and meet up with Spencer, who has spent all day eating his heart out at the Musee d’Orsay. I visit the museum vicariously through him as I swipe through photos of Rodin’s sculptures on his phone.
4:30 p.m.
After some work, he and I walk to a cafe my Parisian friend Sophie recommends, but it’s full, so we go somewhere whatever where I get an okay salad, fries and a Diet Coke. Then we get a text from our friend Gabby, who’s doing PR for a few shows, that she has a break and wants us to come meet her and her friends at the Ferris wheel, so we do, snag a six person gondola and have a truly delightful time on top of the world.
5:30 p.m.
The lot of us walk through the Tuileries at an impressively slow pace because we all have to stop and take about a million versions of the same photo. The lighting was good so no complaints. Once everyone gets a new profile picture, we part ways.
6:30 p.m.
Spencer and I are posted up at Cafe Flore with Sophie, my friend who suggested the earlier spot. I’m taking this opportunity to push through emails, but since I am the only person on my phone, I wrap far more quickly than I would have if we were in New York. We’ve crashed Sophie’s drinks with her friends and overstay our welcome until about 8 p.m., when I have to run to Sonia Rykiel. Spencer stays; he’s very French now.
8:45 p.m.
Jet lag was just about to hit when Sonia Rykiel wakes me up. The show concludes with two loud confetti-exploding POPS! Models laugh and dance down the end of the runway. Then Bananarama comes on to sing and champagne is passed around. It is a celebration of the label’s 50th anniversary and a joyful tribute to the late iconic designer. The clothes themselves were both fun and very “ready-to-wear,” nothing so FASHION that everyone couldn’t enjoy them, save for the four fluffy-hatted snow monsters that opened the show in tandem. My favorite look was a green glitter dress on a model who charged the runway in thigh high boots with a caramel-colored bolero.
9:30 p.m.
It should be time for bed, but instead, it’s time for dinner. We eat, though nothing major, I am sorry to report, then around 11:30 p.m. we take a long walk back to the hotel. My feet hurt but it’s worth it; it’s easier to see the sights on foot.
Sunday, 12 p.m.
Following a rainy morning spent debating where to eat in-between emails and some work for Hotel MR (!!!), I stop by the Tome presentation to see Ryan Lobo and Ramon Martin’s latest collection. It’s inspired by the artist Tschabalala Self, and though she wasn’t in the room today, she appears in the lookbook. I love this collection, all wide legs and clashed patterns. I think my favorite, if I had to choose, is the layered plaid look that features accordion pleats that are practically camouflaged in all the pattern.
1-4 p.m.
Time is starting to blend together. After Tome, where I run into Tamu McPherson, who is best-dressed dressed for the rain in a clear Maison Michel hat, I have a re-see at Nina Ricci, where I discover details I didn’t catch from my seat, like the corduroy texture of a gray suit (apparently the brand does corduroy every Fall/Winter, which I did not know) and the crinkle effect on a white silk dress.
5 p.m.
Time for Valentino. First thing to know is that, while everyone dresses up for every show in Paris — talk about the best of Sunday’s best — the crowd before and after Valentino come attired in head-to-toe full looks. (I’m still in my outfit from this morning, and I dressed for the rain. The weather’s since taken a turn for the sunny. Damn these chic women and their chic foresight.) When the show begins and the models start walking down an unpretentious, simple runway, I understand the crowd’s impulse to dress accordingly — even if that meant running home to change first. The clothes are so artfully crafted, so beautiful in a way that seems specific to Paris (that’s my romantic side writing, let it happen) that, as a viewer, I want to blend into the scenery, absorb into the world of Valentino, and pay respects.
The collection itself is a fairytale fantasy but not so fantastical that it’s absurd. Mostly, the fairytale is in reference to the little red riding hoods that come in a variety of colors, and the gowns that give proper use to the word “ethereal” — which I’d previously, in my own writing at least, embargoed. The rest of it is simple; not “easy” simple, or basic simple, but experienced, sweeping, painterly lines with just the right amount of bells and whistles.
6 p.m.
After meeting up with our roving street style photographer, Simon, to stage a photo for this story, I head to the Marais to meet my friends where I drink two negronis and eat vegetable pizza with a side of spaghetti bolognese. Weird combo but whatever, it’s the weekend. I have two-and-a-half-hours to kill before Thom Browne and my phone’s dead, so I charge it behind the bar (which means no checking email) and forget about fashion week for long enough to process it.
