Life has never been this good for you. What’s the fucking catch? You’re waiting for the other shoe to drop but it never comes. Why would it? You got married to the best person in the world, have an amazing job that lets you save people, have amazing friends who do what you do, and work on being healed from people who stripped you down and stole whatever was left of you.

It’s been a few years since you and Steve tied the knot, and you’ve never been happier. Marriage is and was something you never thought was in the cards for someone like you. Whatever Hydra did to you made you believe you were only good for killing someone and stealing what they couldn’t do on their own.

The celebrate your third anniversary, you and Steve are planning a vacation to a place you two have never been to before. There is a lot of ground on Earth to cover, but you want to go someplace raw and nature-filled. You can always hop on a plane and go to a touristy spot with a million other people, but you want to enjoy what nature has to offer and escape from the real world for a bit.

“How about Hawaii? I’ve never been there.”

“Too crowded. Everyone and their mother wants to go there.” Steve flips through a vacation brochure that Tony sent him in the mail. “What about Alaska? I’ve never been there. I know the cold won’t bother us.”

“How can it? You spent most of your life as a Capsicle.”

“Hey, you promised never to call me that.”

You know he’s joking based on his tone and the fat smile on his face. You walk over to him and kiss him tenderly to express your apologies.

“Alaska this time of year must be beautiful. We should go there.”

“Alaska it is, then.”

You and Steve packed for the icy vacation in Alaska, something you’re excited for. You’ve seen snow and experienced the cold winters of Siberia, but you’ve never actually enjoyed it. You want to experience being bundled up in front of the fireplace when there is snow falling outside.

The day of your flight comes sooner than you expected, so you and Steve head to the airport. A lot of people will recognize you but you’re flying first class so that might limit the amount of people you come into contact with. Tony offered his private jet but you like experiencing “normal” people things like going to the airport. It makes you feel more connected with the world if that makes sense.

You get to the airport and see a family get out of the taxi they ordered. It’s a family of four, and the two teenagers struggle to get their luggage out of the trunk. The teenage boy complains to his mom who heaves the luggage like some Super Mom. Steve sees the family but doesn’t say anything about it. You two head inside to check with security after getting your tickets at the front desk.

A young woman and her young son are at the very front of the line getting ready to go through the metal detectors. He’s a small toddler who doesn’t quite understand what is going on but he takes off his shoes per the instructions of TSA. He runs over to his mom and holds up his shoes.

“Here you go, Mommy.”

Seeing him tugs on your heartstrings. You look over at Steve who is watching the child. Something nags at you from the back of your mind from security all the way to the gate. There is some time to kill so you and Steve grab a quick bite at a cafe near the gate. A few tables down from you is a mother and father trying to feed their three very small children. They might be a bit older than newborns, and the parents scramble to get their bottles ready. Steve notices you staring at the family and nudges your side.

“Are you okay?”

“Never better.”

When you get on the plane, you notice a man who looks to be in his forties escorting his elderly father to his seat. The old man looks too old to do anything himself which is why his son is here helping him. Seeing these families makes you question your own, and you look at Steve who is reading the information booklet in the pocket on the back of the seat in front of him.

The flight to Alaska is a grueling eleven hours but you use the time to sleep and catch up on your books. Nothing can prepare someone for the harsh weather that is known in Alaska this time of year, but you once spent a winter in Siberia that was -60 degrees, so this is honestly nothing. Steve spent seventy years in the ice so this cold doesn't bother him either.

The hotel you’re staying in is more like a housing lodge with a bunch of different cabins located around a major lake in Alaska. While Steve is checking in at the front desk, you’re sitting in the lobby waiting for him to be done. A small child runs up to you holding a cookie and she raises her hand to give it to you.

“Oh, hello,” you smile.

“Hi. This is for you.”

You take the cookie, unsure where her mother is. Seconds later, you hear someone calling for her.

“Lily! There you are. You don’t go up to strangers like that.” She walks over and grabs her arm. “I’m sorry.”

“I gave her a cookie, Momma!”

“It’s okay, honestly.” Lily leaves with her mother just as Steve comes back. “She gave me a cookie.”

Steve chuckles and leads you to one of the lodges on the lake. It’s private, big, secluded, and very beautiful. It’s everything you’ve ever wanted. You arrived in Alaska late so the only thing you’re doing today is relaxing. The sun is already setting and the snow is starting to fall so the only logical thing to do is build a fire and snuggle up in front of it. Steve brought out the alcohol the lodge laid out for you (they were a tad excited two Avengers were staying with them) and sat by the fire with you. Steve looks at you and sees you staring at the fire in thought.

“What are you thinking?” Steve asks and sips his drink.

“You know, I never once had a thought where I might end up one day. All that mattered to me was the mission. Then, I met you, and that all changed. Suddenly, I found myself seeing myself buying a house with you, marrying you, and being everything I wished I could be for you. I was never allowed to think about what I wanted in life.

“Now I do.” You look at him with unshed tears in your eyes. “I thought I never wanted children. I was never given the room to even think about stuff like that. Lately, everywhere I look, are children and their parents. I know you want one. I see you looking at them, too. I see myself in a great big house with you and our little ones running around. I can see you teaching them to protect themselves, and our dogs will always be there to protect them, too. I want that now, but they sterilized me when they made me. It hurts me that I can’t give that to you.”

Steve sets his drink down and pulls you closer. You rest your head on his chest and softly cry at missing what you can never have.

“There are other ways to have kids. We can adopt or foster.”

“All I wanted before I was taken was to have a family of my own.”

“We can have that.”

“Even if I can’t give you a child biologically?”

“Even that. Family doesn't mean blood. We make our own in any way we want.”

“Are you saying you want to adopt a child with me?” you sniffle.

“We’ve had a few good years of marriage. I think it’s time we bring someone new into the picture, don’t you think?”

“Yeah, I do,” you smile and kiss him. “When we get back, we can look into it.”

“Okay,” Steve nods and kisses you once again.

Carlos missed how, when he moved into the kitchen, his mom looked at TK and said “that’s not what I asked.” TK nodded in understanding, and they joined everyone in the kitchen. “I couldn’t prepare anything, but maybe Mr Strand has some cocoa? I can make a hot drink to help you sleep better.”

“I’m not hungry, mum. But thank you,” he replied.

“Yeah.” TK made a funny face. “And I highly doubt my dad has any chocolate around.”

“Chocolate?” Captain Strand joined the conversation. “Who do you think I am?” TK threw him a deadly stare, and then he kept going. “But I think I kept some coffee that Gwyn left somewhere. Why don’t I prepare something and we let the boys get settled in?”

It's the most wonderful time of the year!

Well, not really, but a little fic or fanart does go a long way.

I started Merry Chissmas in the winter of 2020, and did it again in 2021. Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with cancer in February of 2022, and with radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery, I wasn't in shape to do anything but sleep through the holidays. I'm in remission this year and wanted to create another no-pressure fest.

The bingo card with this year's prompts will post to @merry-chissmas @chissmas-elf and @contentment-of-cats on November 1. The card will also be posted on the Merry Chissmas Ao3 page.

No works will be posted on the Merry Chissmas blog or Ao3 until December 1.

The fanwork must be Chiss-centric.

For character bingo, Grim or Ruggie!

I really like Grim! He’s a fun, silly companion to have in a situation in which you are brought into an unfamiliar world. I know some companions in video games can become boring or annoying when they're with you so constantly, but I never feel that way with Grim. I like that he genuinely cares for his kobun hehe. <3 even if it never seems that way, there are lots of moments in the game where Grim shows he cares in his own ways and I like how his friendship with the MC (as well as ADeuce and other characters) has developed throughout the main storyline. :D also in book six where MC is so concerned about finding Grim??? That broke my heart omg!! T_T they just want to make sure he's safe aaaaaa!!!!!! And Grim crying in his cell about how he wants to see MC... (or something like that; admittedly, that scene in book 6 is foggy. ^^;;;)

Also, the tiny sprinkles of Grim lore we get!!!!! It makes me so curious to learn more about him and his (what I'm assuming is potentially) sad past. I think Grim deserves lots of happiness and premium tuna, and I hope only good things are in his future. He's a lovable gremlin who grows on you over time. :D

As for Mr. Ruggie...

OH RUGS!!!!! I love Ruggie!!!! <3 he's just like me fr. I hope for his success every day because he deserves only good things and no suffering whatsoever!!! I also really like his hair??? The colors and the style itself are just so satisfying to look at, if that makes any sense. orz his laugh is really cute, too. T_T every time he does that signature laugh of his, I find myself smiling because it's so fun to listen to.

When I'm not simping for Octavinelle or Heartslabyul, Ruggie is one of my favorites. He was the second character who caught my eye back in 2020 and I still love him dearly!!! I really would like to get some of his cards, but I can't lose sight of the inevitable Glorious Masquerade release (and Riddle's birthday in August). One day I will have a Ruggie SSR... one day....... >_< the way that this card art had me a vise when I first saw it in 2020:

Ruggie's backstory is so heartbreaking. It's another reason why I love him because, along with that circumstance and the circumstances he grew up with, it forced him to become more resourceful and cunning to survive. He may be another character who schemes and is always trying to make money, sometimes in less-than-shiny ways, but he's very hardworking! Ruggie working many part-times is so real. T_T I understand that grind and I hope he continues to do his best. <3 I want him to always be happy no matter what.

ALSO HIM BEING RAISED BY HIS GRANDMOTHER AAAAAAAA it makes me feel so fluffy because he is a really good guy underneath his sneakiness. Like when he brings leftovers and such home for the winter break to share with the other children in the slums!!! He has a very good heart!!! His grandmother raised him to be so sweet and caring. orz I love him too much.... Rugs, you're perfect in every single way hehe. (♡ˊ͈ ꒳ ˋ͈)

His UM is also very cool!!!! It has a lot of potential (sk!Ruggie) and the way it was utilized in book 2 was so terrifying. ;;;;; not being able to control your own movements because someone else is controlling them and your body is forced to follow every movement they make!!!!! Aaaaaa it's scary to imagine what a yandere!Ruggie might do if he ever needed to rely on his UM for help in getting darling...

Happy New Year, lovelies! These are the best books I read in 2022. (Many of them didn’t actually come out this year, and I don’t count rereads.) I read and fell in love with a lot of graphic novels this year, along with a lot of my usual horror! I participated in two challenges for Forgotten YA Gems (now on Discord!): the Annual Reading Challenge and the Summer Bingo Challenge. I also did a horror challenge for Books in the Freezer and participated in a group readalong of The Pale King by David Foster Wallace at the DFW Discord.

I also kept to my blogging goals of participating in at least one prompt for Tell Me Something Tuesday and posting one Readalike each month! It was a much better blogging year for me than the last, and it's been nice to enjoy reading and reviewing again. For now, I'm not setting my goals any higher in the hopes that it stays fun!

End of Year Fic Writing Bingo

This year was a pretty good one for fic! I think a key element of 2023 for writing was that I dug back into some WIPs that had been languishing and just sort of forced myself to finish them, even if they weren’t as perfect as I imagined they would be, or went in a different direction than I had originally intended. A lot of these, looking at the list, were gifts or inspired by prompts, which helps in having a firm deadline. I didn’t do my ‘write daily’ thing I did in 2020 and 2021, but I still wrote a lot, and initiated WIP hours with friends so that I would have a dedicated time to write. 

Fannishly I did a lot of other things this year too: 3 Fic Clique Ficlet episodes and a handful of podfics! They were really fun and I hope to do similar things next year. 

As you can see, I sadly did NOT make bingo (despite being so close SO many times) but hey, I tried!

something else entirely holds me in thrall (Pokemon)

“Everyone lives and nothing hurts” – I had started this fic due to re-playing Pokemon games from my childhood (Pokemon Crystal my beloved). It’s just my friends and I in the Pokemon world having idealized jobs with our Pokemon. I was encouraged internally to finish it so I could give it to one of the friends who had a character in the fic to help them through a hard time. So less “everyone lives” (all friends in it are alive!!) but “nothing hurts” definitely hits in this self-indulgent, really happy AU of our lives. 

shorn-off children like them (Call Me Chihiro (2023))

“If no one else will write it, I will” – so I watched the movie on a whim and it REALLY hit me where it hurts. So few movies get the ‘estranged child’ feelings well, and I saw a lot of myself in my mid-twenties with this character. So I wrote this because I just don’t see analysis of people in my situation in media, and I wanted to give her the character development I went through to end up in a happier place. 

The Archon is Too Sublime (原神 | Genshin Impact (Video Game))

“Thought of a great line” – I really liked the summary line of this fic, it sets the tone for the whole thing. I just honestly love writing irreverent, silly but sincere fics like this.

“I was joking with my friend and then it happened” – shoutout to Purple for fucking around with “haha what if Tighnari accidentally became a cult leader and Cyno loved the idea of being a beautiful cult leader’s beloved” and it spiraled into one of my most popular fics of the year. 

it flows as the breaths inside the lungs (Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters)

“This is going to be SO hot” – My first fic in a new fandom is giving pharaohs heat cycles based on the Nile flooding?? Sure!! It was definitely one of my horniest fics I wrote this year, and I was very pleased by the result.

“But what happens AFTER canon?” I quite liked Marik’s character when I first watched YGO– I related a ton to the ‘very bitter after religious abuse’ backstory he had, and I wanted to explore how he seemingly mellowed out a ton in the last season. 

Dragon-In-Wait (BNHA)

“Thought of a great scene” – so this was the prequel to one of my favorite fics I’ve ever written, Last Out the Winter. I started it in 2020 and sometime in early 2023 I was like “I have 40k down. I just need to slam out 10-20k more to finish it.” 40k later, I had finished it, and, amusingly, the “great scene” I had in mind from the beginning was slightly changed! But that’s what happens when you let a fic languish for 3 years. 

(space) riot when I'm with you (IT - Stephen King & Pride and Prejudice)

“It came to me in a dream” – While this was indeed a prompt from the Fic Clique podcast, the plot to it was a hazy contrivance of having read a LOT of Yu-Gi-Oh fanfic and wanting to explore the horror genre a bit more. It just sort of coalesced in my brain to the surprisingly coherent fic it turned out to be. 

A Timely Convergence of Melodies (new chapter) (Kuroko no Basuke)

“I just want them to kiss” – Ahhh, my fic that is the slowest to update of all time. I went 3 years in between updating this chapter and the last. Since each chapter focuses on a different couple reliving the same 5 or so hours, I do consider this mentally a ‘one shot’. This was another “omg just FINISH IT” fic I yanked out of my drafts and slammed out. It wasn’t what I originally wanted for it, but I’m glad it’s done all the same. 

A Handmade Scrapbook (new one-shot) ("Designation: Miracle" fandom, a Kuroko no Basuke AU)

“Fuck this character in particular” – I love Masaomi from Designation: Miracle with all of my heart but boy is it fun to Put That Man In Situations. Doing a SVSSS crossover with the OT4 appeals to the nichest audience of like 4 people on the planet who have read D:M and understand SVSSS but it was fun for ME to write and that’s what matters. 

deep in the night, I am looking for some(one) (2 new chapters) (Fanfic of the "Letter to the Headitor" AU for BNHA)

“I want this universe and those characters” – As always, my fanfics of the LTTH AU are my little bouncy house of humor and fun to roll around in. I went a little more serious with the most recent chapter, but it felt very earned after the other more lighthearted ones. LTTH will always be a fic that, in watching it update in real time, helped me through some real bad stuff and I will always write about it with joy in my heart. 

Untitled Fic Clique Episode (Fandom RPF & Untitled Goose Game (Video Game))

“Just to see if I could” – The SECOND I got the idea for this I yanked out my computer and slammed this out in approximately two hours. I was losing my gourd, possessed, feral with my goose teeth and wings. It is possibly the funniest thing I’ll ever write and I may have peaked but that’s okay.

“This idea won’t shut up until I write it” – I’ve been noodling on this Razor/Fischl/Bennett future fic for a while now, and part of my “just write it!!” mentality this year involved me taking the noodling thoughts and stir-frying them into something edible. I was pretty pleased with it in the end, especially the female OC, who is definitely one of my favorites I’ve written.

“Gift fic” – my yearly solstice gift for my metamour! She let me write Zhongli with two dicks this year, I was really excited about that. 

the skin you're in (Wizard of Oz) 

“Found a prompt list” – more specifically, a Yuletide recipient’s list! What’s funny about this one is that originally, I had been assigned to them for a different fandom (Neopets) only to read the rest of their prompts and read their cool prompt for a genderqueer Ozma. It prompted me to re-read select books from the Wizard of Oz series so I could better write this fic, which was pretty fun.

“I saw the plot and needed it for my OTP” – So I have been really really wanting to write a fic set in the modern day kink community/scene, even though I left my in-person kink community several years ago due to burnout. I still have many fond memories of it, and truly wanted to write a fic that reflects the good parts of the community with rose-colored glasses, so I no longer felt as bitter about the bad parts. When I saw this movie requested for Yuletide, I knew that I had to write for it, and that finally, I could marry this plot idea (“put those characters in the kink scene”) with this fantastic movie that lends itself so well to that idea. Writing it was joyful, cathartic, and a little melancholy, which I feel really enhanced the fic.

When Yuu first arrived at the orphanage, he met Mika. Mika was the first person to come up to him, and after he left, Yuu came to one conclusion. Mika was like the sun. But not in any sweet, cliche way. He wasn’t going to say that Mika brought light into his dark world right away. Well, okay he did. But Yuu had been submerged in darkness for so long that Mika was too much. Mika’s light was blinding and painful. Yuu wished he’d stay far away from him. In conclusion, when they first met, Mika was the summer sun. Insufferably bright and hot, or in this case cute. Not that Yuu would ever admit the last part.

In the vampire city, Yuu stuck to the idea that Mika was the sun. But he wasn't the summer sun anymore. He was more like the sun in the fall. He wasn’t always there, sometimes hidden by clouds (aka making deals with Ferid), but when he was, he warmed the otherwise cold room. Yuu started wishing he’d stay close. That he wouldn’t hide behind the clouds, he almost wished that summer came back. But isn't that how it always works? Once the temperature drops, you want the sun back. But once the sun comes back, it’s too bright. This led Yuu to the conclusion that Summer and Fall weren’t for him.

After Mika’s death, Yuu was sure Mika was the sun. That would make this winter he guessed. There was very little sun, he could only see the sun in his dreams. It was cold, and much like the fall, he missed the Summer. The constant heat and light from the sun, it sounded so nice now. At this point he would willingly burn in it’s light. All he needed was his sun back. He was starting to think that maybe he needed Summer. 

After stabbing Mika, Yuu could feel himself begin to melt. The icy winter had begun to freeze him over. It gave him a slight immunity to the cold, and he didn’t think he’d ever experience the warmth of the sun again. He had almost fully accepted the eternal darkness of winter. But seeing Mika again, he began to thaw. It was like the first day of spring, not warm but brighter than the winter. And just like spring, the sun began to appear more often. Yuu was positive that Spring was the season for him.

Of all the seasons, Yuu was looking forward to Summer the most and Winter the least. So why? Why had Summer been so short? And why? Why was Winter here so soon? This time though, Yuu was certain that he’d rather die than live through another Winter.
