Wisdom Tooth Surgery (Part 1)

I haven’t written in a really long time, so I figure I really should put this down so that I can remember the experience. Years back, I hope to look at this and reminisce. This post is mostly for myself... so if you’d like to skip this over, please continue scrolling. I’ve divided my posts into a few parts just so I can find it easily in the future. 

Where: NUH (Specifically, NUCOHS) 

Context: I’m planning to leave for the UK later this year to pursue my Master’s (YES! FINALLY!) and my wisdom tooth had been giving me some intermittent issues for a while. Before I flew, I thought it would be best that I get it out now than try to do so in UK. 

The first place I sought was Greenlife Dental Clinic’s AMK branch. My cousin’s good friend was a dentist there, and since I’d actually met her before and she seemed really nice, I decided to go with doing my first consultation with a dentist I actually trusted and whom I had met previously. My dentophobia is real >.< especially when I’m unfamiliar. 

The sad part was that I never got to do my with this really sweet dentist (her name was Caslin), because according to her, my roots were pinching the nerves, and it was too risky to get it done at the clinic. She’d have to refer me to an oral surgeon. I dreaded this, but I didn’t really have the choice. She recommended that I head to either Winston Tan’s clinic at Mount Elizabeth, or to NUH (NUCOHS). After a few agonising days, and with Caslin’s recommendation, I decided to go with NUCOHS. Again, this was a choice I picked because... Caslin had a friend / colleague who was an oral surgeon, and whom she previously worked with at NUH. She recommended him. See what I said about the dentophobia? Yea; real. It’s incredibly difficult for me to see a dentist I’ve not met. 

Early Nov: I scheduled an appointment with Caslin’s friend / oral surgeon (Dr Hong) just to source out my options. The first consultation went really well, and I was surprised by just how sincere and genuine he was. He laid out the options for me succinctly, and gave me the pros and cons behind GA, sedation, and LA. I had walked in with the intention of getting sedation done, but after listening to Dr Hong, I decided to do LA instead. I don’t know what overcame me, but I guess that 1 consultation cemented some form of trust. Maybe it’s the fact that Dr Hong was humourous and that’s one way to earn my trust, or the fact that he gave me his mobile number so I could check anything with him if I wanted. (I eventually didn’t; because man, oral surgeons are incredible busy) Either way, before I could stop myself, I booked my doomsday date, 7th Dec, 8am. It’ll be fine, I thought.

Desperate Kiwis are queuing at hospital pain clinics because they can’t afford the dentist - and health bosses are not backing free dental care.

“Waitemata District Health Board wants a “comprehensive dental service for all New Zealanders”, its chief executive confirmed

The position comes amidst growing concern among health workers about people who can’t afford hefty dentist’ bills and live in chronic pain as a result, with some resorting to gruesome “DIY dentistry”.

There are long queues at hospital pain clinics for temporary fillings for teeth extractions, people turning up at emergency departments because of dental pain.

Members discussed whether the health boards should call on the government to provide subsidised or free dentistry.

Waitemata DHB chief executive, Dr dale Bramley, told the meeting the Ministry of Health was “already considering how the dental service could be included in the public health service, and that the DHB boards should support”.

A resolution was passed by the committee recommending the DHBs “support comprehensive dental care access for all New Zealanders as part of the public health system”

Grant Pollard, the ministry’s group manager for population health, denied any current work on possible changes to publicly-funded dental care.

Any more to provide more subsidised or free dental care would carry a huge cost. Currently, about $198 million a year is spent on oral health services, with most covering universal services for children and teenagers.

Russell’s charity Receive a Smile has treated almost 10,000 patients free of charge, including those with bad infections, and broken and rotting teeth.

Currently, Government-funded dental work for adults is limited to emergency care for pain and infection relief, and work and income grants for those on a low income and who are in serious pain and need urgent treatment. Dental care is also given to a small number of hospital inpatient and work needed after accidents are funded by ACC.

The NZ Dental Association wants more subsidised care for people on low incomes - but not universal access saying such a step would likely cost more than the annual budget of large DHBs

In New Zealand wealth determines dental health 

Inequalities in untreated tooth decay are wider in New Zealand than in Australia, Canada or the United States.

The latest NZ Health Survey run annually by the MOH reported that cost prevents an estimated 15 per cent of NZ adults (just over half million) from seeing a GP about a medical problem and nearly 7 per cent (around a quarter million) from filling a prescription. For dentistry, cost stopped 44 per cent of adults (around 1.6 million) from accessing care. In the young adult age group, this was over half the population.
