  Nationwide Geographic has introduced the successful photographs of its prestigious 2017 Nationwide Geographic Nature Photographer of the 12 months contest. The grand prize winner, chosen from over 11,000 entries, is the picture above by Jayaprakash Joghee Bojan displaying a male orangutan peering from behind a tree whereas crossing a river in Borneo, Indonesia.

Image of a Single Atom Wins Science Picture Contest
A outstanding picture of a single atom trapped by electrical fields has simply been awarded the highest prize in a widely known science images competitors. The picture is titled “Single Atom in an Ion Entice” and was shot by David Nadlinger of the College of Oxford.
The Engineering and Bodily Sciences Analysis Council (EPSRC) within the UK at the moment introduced the successful pictures of its nationwide science images competitors. Nadlinger’s grand prize picture exhibits an atom as a speck of sunshine between two steel electrodes positioned about 2mm (zero.078in) aside.
The caption reads:
“The concept of having the ability to see a single atom with the bare eye had struck me as a splendidly direct and visceral bridge between the miniscule quantum world and our macroscopic actuality,” Nadlinger tells EPSRC. “A back-of-the-envelope calculation confirmed the numbers to be on my aspect, and once I set off to the lab with digicam and tripods one quiet Sunday afternoon, I used to be rewarded with this explicit image of a small, pale blue dot.”
The picture was captured on August seventh, 2017, utilizing a Canon 5D Mark II DSLR, a Canon EF 50mm f/1.eight lens, extension tubes, and two flash models with coloration gels.
