A (virtual) Catalan wine road trip
Tumblr media Tumblr media
WINE tasting back in Britain, it can often make sense to focus on one appellation; on the road in wine country, not so much. For a start, many producers in regions such as the Rhône produce ranges of wines with different classifications: most Gigondas producers, for example, will produce a Côte du Rhône as well at a minimum, and often a Vacqueyras too.
But in any case, you usually get a better sense of a region by tasting more widely (with the local food, of course). That, at least, was the philosophy of last week’s tasting in London organised by the Catalan Tourist Board to showcase the province’s wines.
It certainly made thematic sense: while there was a range of styles, most of the whites were all or part garnatxa (ie garnacha) blanca, the reds garnacha negra. It perhaps also makes sense to taste Catalan wines regionally since none of them – not even Priorat - are as well known in Britain as Rioja or Ribera del Duero.
Yet big differences exist between Catalan Denominaciónes de Origen (DOs); this tasting merely skimmed the surface. And there are lesser Catalan DOs that I’ve long been quite impressed with – such as Empordà, up on the French border – without ever having the time and opportunity to taste properly across producers.
For that, Catalonia/Catalunya’s waymarked wine routes offer a tempting way in. There are five: Penedés (including Cava), Empordà, Alella, Lleida (Costers del Segre) and Priorat (including Montsant). Alella is pretty niche (just nine producers) while Costers del Segre is somewhat fragmented geographically. But Empordà and Priorat especially offer a lot in relatively small zones, while you could easily combine Priorat with the southern part of Costers del Segre.
The following wines were the stand-outs for me:
Gramona Imperial Gran Reserva 2013 – to my mind, Gramona remains Catalan Cava’s finest producer. This is one of their more modest cuvées but it’s very good: fine, elegant, fresh, long (often in Berry Brothers though not at present; Blanco and Gomez have it at a pretty inflated price, by the half case.)
Clos Pons, Sisquella 2015, Costers del Segre – this is from vineyards at altitudes up to 700 metres in the Garrigues sub-zone, in the south of Costers del Segre, just over the mountains from Montsant. It’s 100 per cent garnacha blanca but it’s modern in style: fermented and aged four months in new French oak, though the wood isn’t overbearing. Aromatic, attractive sweet fruit with nice structure and weight, some length. (Waud Wines, Albion, from £12.50)
Vinyes Domènech, Furvus 2015, Montsant – the red wines of Monsant have long been a more affordable alternative to pricey neighbouring Priorat (of which Monsant was a part until 2001.) This is 90 per cent garnacha negra, the balance merlot. It’s 15% alcohol but is so well balanced that it doesn’t taste it. Wonderfully aromatic; firm acidity and minerality with attractive herbal notes. Very good. (N/A UK retail)
Abadal, “3.9” 2015, Pla de Bages – Pla de Bages is a small and obscure DO in the Barcelona backcountry, on the other side of Montserrat from the Catalan capital. A blend of cabernet sauvignon and syrah, it’s very dark in colour; deep, aromatic nose with a fair slug of oak (12 months); deep, velvety palate, mocha notes. A big wine but well balanced: very impressive. The name, 3.9, refers to the plot the grapes for this come from. (Lunya, Manchester/Liverpool, £25.95)
Clos Galena 2014, Priorat – made of a lower proportion if trademark garnacha negra than some Priorats – 40 per cent and the balance equally cabernet sauvignon, syrah and carinena – this is aromatic and powerful. Deep, complex and long but with good freshness and acidity – more so than some monster Priorats, despite its 12 months in new French oak (Winebuyers, £32.05)
Pictured above: vineyards at Vinyes Domènech, Montsant.

𝗦𝗨𝗟𝗔 𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗡𝗜𝗡 𝗕𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗖 𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗘𝗥𝗩𝗘 🍷 A crisp refreshing white wine with its real aromatic character. Hints of honey, pineapple with an oaky finish on the palate. One of my favorite white on a weekday. 12.5% abv. Goes good with fish, Ravioli, pasta..even with chicken sandwich (that i tried today). Though Sula Vineyards produced many great wines but Chenin Blanc Reserve of of the best and one of my favorites too 🙂 #winetime #wine #wines #winegeeks #winelover #wineinstagram #winelovers #winetasting #wineoftheday #wineglass #winewinewine #winesofindia #sulavineyards #cheninblanc #whitewine #instawine #winemonday #drinkup #winebuyer #pubs #wineporn🍷 #wineinfluencer (at India) https://www.instagram.com/p/CbXvRI5onYV/?utm_medium=tumblr
