âWelcome back from patrol, Miss Songbird, thatâs what the press is calling you right?â your boots rang out against the metal floor of the warehouse that you and your so called group of misfits called home, all runaways, all some sort of vigilante, none of you knew each other's real names and nor did you need to, it would just bring back bad memories for most of you and for all of you it gave plausible deniability it anyone ever came looking. You spotted the one you all called Foxglove sitting on one of the couches in the warehouse, she was the one who was talking to you as you walked in. Foxglove is a young woman, your age give or take a few months, long red hair and blue eyes, she was a tall young woman, probably from around Central City from where you could place her voice, but none of that really mattered, the past did not matter, only the here and the now. âHard night or nah?â
âNot really, I just avoided a run in with Red Robin, he almost spotted me when I was on the Madison Street bridge, I almost crashed my bike trying to avoid him this time.â You spoke to her as you took off your mask, peeling it away from the skin by your eyes. Your suits and gear were gifts from someone you had saved from a hostage situation, a wealthy businessman from Coast City, Mark Austen, he had sponsored your work with no strings attached except a friendly relationship so if you needed help just ask and vise versa with him, he came by every month or so to drop of a shipment of gear and repairs and he did know your nicknames and faces but certainly not your real names, well knew yours due to your paths crossing before but that was another life. You sat down on the couch across from Foxglove, your body falling down with a heavy thump, you would need a replacement soon, you should ask Mark on the next shipment of supplies. You cracked your neck and threw your head back on the backrest of the couch with a heavy sigh. âAlso, please donât call me that, it makes me sound like one of them and not one of us, ya know?â
âYou mean like one of the bats and birds? I mean thatâs fine I guess.â She groaned, laying back on the couch and crossing her legs over the armrest. She was off of patrol for the next few weeks, got shot a few days back by one of Black Maskâs men and got her foot pretty messed up, so she has been on communication links and the technical sides of things. âI donât get why you wonât work with them at all, I mean even Clove and Nettle have sucked up to work with the Bat. Itâs a personal history, Iâm right arenât I?â
âYou're rarely wrong.âÂ
âWere you one of them? Like one of the Batâs birds?âÂ
â...Kind of⌠IâŚI⌠wasnât⌠one of them exactly.â You choked on your words as a sudden weight on your chest sparked up yet again, a weight you have not felt in a very long time. How long has it been since you left them? Three years, maybe four? You brought your legs up to your chest, wrapping your arms around them and hugging yourself close as your eyes fixed upon one of the tinted out windows of the warehouse. âI⌠I donât like talking about it.â
âOh⌠I didnât mean⌠Iâm sorry if I brought up any bad memories.â She apologized to you, her more relaxed tone falling into a deep pit of sympathy to you. There was a beeping from the laptop that sat on the coffee table between the two of you, the one that she had been using to watch the communication line, someone was calling in. She grabbed the computer and answered the line, catching your attention as you listened in. âClove, Foxglove and Nightshade here, whatâs your status?â
Right⌠Nightshade⌠that was your name now.
âYa, Henbane and I have a bit of a situation hereâŚâ Cloveâs voice cuts through the line and there was a bit of unease in her voice as she spoke to you both. âWeâre down Southside, by the docks, there was supposed to be that shipment tonight⌠that was a front, there is a lady here who wants to meet.â
âWell Nettle is up by Gotham University at the moment and I am stuck here at base with my foot-â
âNo she just wants to meet with Nightshade- or she called her Songbird anyway, says she knows her.â Cloveâs words made you prick up, no one has known any of you for years, you all ran away and when you did you all became nameless. âI donât think she is one for negotiation but I also donât think sheâll let us leave unless Nightshade is here.â
âCan you tell us what she looks like-â
âDonât, I know who it is, or a very good guess at least.â You stood up from the couch and grabbed your mask once again and pressed it back onto your skin as you made your way back to the warehouse garage. âTurn on my spare tracker just in case anything goes wrong, Foxglove. I donât have a good feeling about this.â
âDo you think sheâll kill you?â
âShe wouldnât dare.â
________________________
You pulled your bike over in an alley as you neared the trackers that were on Clove and Henbane, tucking it behind a dumpster so no one would see it while you were away. The docks were dead this time of night, there was a drug bust last night by Batman so the docks were dead in case he was still lurking about tonight, but you knew he was not, you knew him better than that. You walked down the cement road, following it as you neared the water, according to their trackers Henbane and Clove were by the north east waterside of the docks.
âAbout damn time you showed up, Nightshade.â You looked up to see Clove leaning up against a warehouse wall, Henbane next to her. Clove was an innocent looking girl, she was fourteen maybe fifteen when you all started, so now she was just barely an adult if that, she looked like a terrified lamb with her short wavy brown hair and eyes, her freckles and round glasses. Henbane was not as innocent looking as his best friend, he was a big guy, six foot, five inches, curly brown hair and green eyes, and just pure muscle. They walked over to you, Clove looking a lot more terrified than her counterpart, she was normally the one on communication links. âShe hasnât said anything since we called and just has been standing there, waiting.â
You glanced behind them, and just ten yards or so away stood a silhouette of a powerful looking female frame, only the shape was visible in the darkness of the Gotham night. You took a deep breath in and out and took a step forward, pushing away Henbaneâs hand when he tried to stop you, you glanced at him and Clove, not even bothering to force a smile at them, time for that sort of thing was long lost. âDonât worry, Iâll be fine, just wait here.â
They nodded before you walking off, your heart pounding in your chest as you neared her, it was the first time in years that anyone has found you, you knew that your family had been searching for you since you left but they never found you, on both sides of things, with and without masks. But really you shouldnât be surprised that she was the one who found you first, she was not a part of them exactly but she cared for you nonetheless, if you can call it caring. You came to stand next to her, looking over the still waters of the night. You saw her turn to you out of the corner of your eye, you felt her hand come up onto your cheek gently caressing your skin before reaching for the mask and peeling it away from your skin, revealing your face before both of her hands came up your face to turn your head to look at her.
âYouâve grown so much.â
âHello Talia.â Seems like you were right about who was waiting for you, none other than the daughter of the demon, Talia Al Ghul. You would need to get in touch with Mr. Austen sooner or later and see what he could do about shutting down the media on you and your friends, you needed to stay nameless. You pushed her hands away from your face, grabbed your mask from her hands and pressed it back onto your face. âMake this quick, this is on your sonâs patrol route and heâll be here soon-â
âHe is also your brother if you had forgotten.â
âAnd yet, you are not my mother.â You glared at her, eyes narrowing at her as she turned to look back over the moonlit waters. âI will ask you one more time, what do you want, Talia?â
âYou remind me of your father.â
âFuck this, Iâm heading back to base.â Right as you turned to head back to your bike she grabbed your wrist, holding you back, you should not try to fight her, she could break every bone in your body if she wanted to, she would not do such a thing, not to you, but she certainly could. You snapped at her verbally, your voice like daggers. âWhat?â
âSomething dangerous is brewing in Gotham, something beyond what you and your⌠friends can handle.â She glanced over to where Henbane and Clove were standing, just out of earshot before looking back at you. âGo back home tonight, my dear.â
âOr what?â
âIf you leave me no choice, then I will wait here until my Damian arrives here on his patrol and tell him about who is behind that mask you wear.âÂ
she released your hand and you stepped away from her, glancing back at her after she spoke, just looking her over, she certainly was not bluffing about this. You turned away from her, walking away, back to Clove and Henbane as you called out to her. âWell I better get a headstart then.â
âYou are making a mistake, dearest.â
âI have made plenty of those before and I am still alive, Talia.â You heard her sigh and you waved back towards your friends and you just knew they would be asking a million questions after your conversation but you pressed your finger to Cloveâs mouth as she was about to peep. âIâll explain later, get a hold of Foxglove and get her to tell everyone to get back to base now.â
âBut Nettle is-â
âNo buts, we donât have any time to fight on this, we need to regroup and I need to fill you all in about⌠more than a few things.â
________________________
âSo whatâs this emergency meeting all about, something Nightshade got caught in?â Nettle questioned, everyone was sitting around the kitchen table, well the only proper dining table you had in the warehouse. Nettle was a short young man, you all took him in about a year ago, seventeen now, short blonde hair and green eyes, he was the one who had the most known backstory out of all of you, and that was you all knowing he was from Metropolis, you didnât ask questions and you did not need to know.Â
âMore like my past coming back to haunt me.â You sighed and crossed your arms, sitting on top of the kitchen counter, feeling a need to physically distance yourself while you gathered your thoughts. âYou all have been in Gotham for quite some time, but I was born here and well a few things have come to the surface.â
âWhat things?âÂ
You sighed at Henbaneâs question, you reached into your pocket and pulled out your phone, it was a burner from Mr. Austen because god knows you cannot have something for them to find you. You had opened up to a news article about a disappearance from a number of years ago, your disappearance. You set it in the middle of the table for all of them to read the headline at least and see the photo underneath that. âMy old family, if you can call them that, knows my identity as of around three or so hours ago.â
All of them just stared at the headline for a long moment, Clove was glancing between you, the phone, and everyone else to see their reactions before her gaze fell back to rest upon you. âYouâre one of Bruce Wayneâs kids?â
âYep, I am his youngest daughter and biological child.â
âAnd we should be afraid of Bruce Wayne, why? He is just some rich playboy-â
âNo he is not.â you cut Foxglove off and everyoneâs heads turned to you. âThe whole rich playboy persona is a cover up, he⌠he⌠heâs the Batman, the Dark Knight of Gotham, whatever you want to call him.â
âSo wait, are your siblings like Nightwing or Robin?!â
âWait, were you a Robin?â
âShe couldnât have been, Henbane was the one who taught her how to fight⌠right?â
âIs this why you donât like the Bats?â
âI⌠just one at a time, please.â You asked your friends as they suddenly bombarded you with questions and statements and they all hushed at your request. âFirst of all, yes, those are my brothers, but I wished they werenât. Secondly, no I was never a Robin or whatever, I didnât want to be and even if I wanted I would not be allowed to be, I never learned how to fight, they thought they were protecting me.â
âWerenât they?â Nettle questioned you, glancing about the table for approval from the others.Â
âThey did not⌠I⌠let me explain.â You jumped back onto the counter, crossing your legs and sitting down on it. You took a deep breath in and out, closing your eyes and taking a minute to calm yourself. âWhat I am about to tell you brings back some bad memories and it took a long time and some help from Mr. Austen to connect all the dots on this since a lot of it my mom didnât want me to know because I was young and she wanted to protect meâŚâ âItâs okay.â You heard Henbaneâs voice tell you, like he could practically hear your heart racing. âTake as much time as you need, none of us like to think about the past.â
âIâm fine⌠Iâve had a long time to come to terms with this⌠but thank you.â You opened your eyes and smiled at your friend and his intimidating frame was not frightening to you, not anymore, actually it never was, he was the one who found you alongside Foxglove when you managed to sneak away during a charity gala, they found you in that alleyway not long after they found each other. âMy mother was engaged to Bruce Wayne a long time ago, before the first Robin, Dick Grayson, even came around and when he was just starting really as the Bat. My mom loved him, but if they ever had any kids she didnât want them to be involved or hurt by anything he got involved with, she didn't want that sort of life. So she called off their engagement and left him, and like clockwork she found out she was pregnant with me a few days later.â
âShe raised you by herself?â You nodded at Cloveâs question and a deep look of pity came across her face. âThat must have been so hard for her.âÂ
âDonât we⌠not gonna lie we were filthy rich, we were just fine with my momâs own money.â That comment drew a laugh from Henbane and Foxglove along with an embarrassed chuckle from Clove. âMy mom was a really great mother and an even better single parent, I was always by her side, she took me all around the world and it was just us for a really long time. Then one day we returned to Gotham for some big charity party when I was seven I think and she saw Bruce again and he saw me⌠I was young and naive to the dangers of the world like most other children, but then again the children in his life had been right with him fighting crime, I mean that woman at the docks, she is my half-brotherâs mother, she is the daughter of the leader of the League of Assassins, Talia Al GhulâŚâ
â...are you serious?â There was a shocked silence in the room after you said that before Henbane spoke up and you nodded to his question, he just stared off as he leaned back into his chair. âJesus ChristâŚâ
âYa, he is now the current Robin, Damian Wayne, trained by the League of Assassins- but that is another story, sorry I was rambling. Anyway he never got over my mom and now that I was around he wanted to protect us and I know my siblings may have been the ones to kind of prove his point with that. I know my oldest brother, Dick, tried to talk to my mom about that but that didnât work and so then Tim, he⌠he started to look into my mom to find blackmail.â
âTo blackmail your mother.â
âRight on the money, Clove. So when it was the day before we were supposed to leave and this part is actually my fault⌠I ran away from my nanny and I almost got kidnapped and I got saved by the Red Hood-â
âWait, is the Red Hood also-â
âMy brother? ya, he is, his name is Jason⌠he was actually pretty nice to hang out with, him and my sister Cass, Cassandra Cain. I remember after he rescued me, Jason took me to Wayne Manor and I met my father for the first time and I remember it was nice, until it wasnât⌠I remember my fath- Bruce coming back later that night with my mom, they were going to get married and it just felt off. I knew something was wrong, I just didnât know what until it became clear to me over the years, Damian threatening my classmates at school when I was kid when they only wanted to have lunch with me, or when I found a file upon file about me and my mom and photos of us in Timâs room, or hell when I got a boyfriend he almost got strangled by Damian and got his life threatened, and when I punched a kid at school I got sent to Bludhaven to live with my brother, Dick, or there was the time I was⌠I was having sex with my boyfriend and for that I got locked in my room for over a month and then⌠actually I donât like talking about that.â You sighed and let your shoulders relax, looking over your friends and gauging their shocked and disturbed reactions. âYou all get the idea now, and so as of a few hours ago they know I am still here in Gotham and who I am behind the mask, thanks to Talia Al Ghul who I have an⌠interesting relationship with.â
âBut why?â
âI refused to go home, thanks to the feed that has been shown on news she found me and well she is going to tell them, or rather she has already.â You glanced over to the evidence board that is over on the far end of the warehouse, by all of your gear and the bikes, well you and Clove were the only one with bikes, Mr. Austen was working on an armored car for the others since you can Clove were the only one to know about motorbikes, you from the times you snuck into the Batcave or when Jason brought you down to hang out while he worked or even when Kate Kane snuck you out on hers. âShe told me that something dangerous is in Gotham, beyond us, but then again I do not know if she would lie about that or not⌠itâs been awhile since I last saw Talia⌠she was very fond of my mother, kind of like my dad is of my mom.âÂ
âSo what now? If something like that is here we canât team up with the Bats anymore, that would be crazy to risk losing one of our own.â Nettle added in looking at everyone around the room. âAnd plus they know we know you and where you are.â
âSo we just need to be more cautious on patrols, we have a shipment from Mr. Austen coming in tonight before patrols. I can see if he will be willing to help us out, teach him the communication lines so when my foot is healed I can head out with the rest of you.â Foxglove spoke up to Nettleâs concern before she looked at you. âThen I am guessing from what you said, Mr. Austen already knows.â
âYa, he recognized me the moment of that first delivery when I was out of my suit, he is a friend so we can trust him.â
âMkay⌠wait a secondâŚâ Foxglove paused and looked at you, an idea already coming to her mind. âIf they know you are still in Gotham now then you donât have to hide anymore. I mean how many press are going to recognize you four years later and the Bats arenât out during the day besides Signal but you arenât in costume during the day so itâs not like he can interact with you at all unless he wants to expose himself.â
âWait, what are you saying?â
âYou can head out during the day, find allies, I mean you couldnât before cause your family is still in Gotham and didnât know youâre here and Nettle canât still because he only went missing a year ago and would be too recognizable, but the rest of us can.â Foxglove grabs one of the writing pads from the table and a loose pen, waking you all over to gather âround as she begins scribbling down a schedule, or something along those lines. âWe donât leave the warehouse alone, groups of two or more now, the Bats will connect the dots but none of us have civilian identities anymore, I mean hell, Mr. Austen calls us the nameless, no one will know or recognize us anymore. I am stuck here for now cause of this foot, but when I am free to move, Henbane is with me on the streets and Clove is with you, Nightshade, but until then both of you are to stick with Nightshade, and then Nettle and I will hold up the fort here.â
âSo then⌠where to now?â Clove questioned, looking at you, or more specifically, looking you up and down, clearly judging your appearance of sweatpants and a tee shirt since you have pretty much been in hiding for four years, not much need for nice clothes. âActually some different clothes would do you some good, câmon, Iâll lend you some of mine and we can ask Mr. Austen for some cash to go shopping when he swings by later tonight.â
âOur sugar daddy.â
âNo, more like our rich wine aunt who spoils us.â
âHow about we just call him our benefactor?â
âNo.âÂ
________________________
Luckily your rich benefactor gave you more than supplies for vigilantism, but also supplied you more everyday transportation and funds for those sort of normal items, like a licenced bikes along with your armored ones for your use, along with fake ID cards, but you really did not need those anymore, you could even park in a parking garage, that felt weird to you now. You could not remember the last time you stood in a coffee shop line, maybe the last time Barbara and Dick took you out, you felt so flustered that Clove had to order for you.Â
âHey, donât beat yourself over if, I remember the first time Foxglove and I headed out to the streets for the first time, it felt like a whole other world, it just takes time to get used to.â Henbane tried to comfort you as you walked out of the coffee shop, drinks in hand. âClove was also a fish out of water.â
âIt just feels weird to be out here, like normal.âÂ
âWell, weâll get you back to normal soon enough.â Clove patted you on the back and you forced a smile before staring down at your iced coffee, this felt nice, it felt normal. âAny other place you need to stop by before heading back to the warehouse.â
â...Actually yaâŚâ You looked up at Henbane and Clove, taking a deep breath in and out. âCall me crazy⌠but I want to go see my mom.â
âYour mom⌠wait, that means going back to Wayne Manor-â
âClove, I havenât seen her in four years, please.â You looked your friend dead in the eye and smiled, one of hope for a change. âTheyâll respect a truce, especially with what I know from Talia, I donât think she would have given a warning when she only wanted me to try to get me out of the way of it, besides maybe some of the leads we have for out cases connect to whatâs coming and she knew and thatâs why she wanted us out of the way.â
âIâŚfine, but weâre going in with you.â Clove responded before Henbane could and she shot a look at him when he tried to. âWeâll send word to Foxglove and Nettle along with Mr. Austen, so if anything goes south theyâll know where to find us and besides donât they?â
âThey do, but still Nightshade, we need to stay safe and this-â
âIâll be fine, after all we do have leverage.â
âAnd if youâre not fine?â
âThen Iâll be safe from whatever Talia warned me about.â
________________________
Your bikes pulled up to the gate of Wayne Manor, it had been years since you saw the grounds you used to live at and none of it has changed, it has the same sprawling grounds, the same iron and brick fence, and surely the people inside have not changed much either. It took you a moment before you heard the intercom buzz next to the gate, luckily it was just audio and motion, not camera.Â
âItâs⌠itâs me, Iâm here to talk.â
You could practically hear the shocked silence from the other end of the line before the gate swung open and you could pull forward before it shut behind the three of you. By the time you pulled up to the front door and took off your helmets the door of the manor had flung open and you saw Dick as the first one standing there, staring at you, he looked like he was about to cry at the sight of you. At the sight of someone, both Clove and Henbane tensed up, ready to jump in front of you at a momentâs notice, Dick quickly caught onto their defensive behavior and his eyes narrowed at them, glancing between the two of them.
âTalia told Damian last night⌠Please tell me itâs not true.â As Dick spoke those words, his eyes fell on you just as you could make out the silhouettes of everyone else in the doorway, minus Duke, he must be on patrol. Damian and Tim came just next to Dick, they really didnât look much different from how you last saw them, more tired maybe, you could spot Jason, Stephanie, and Cassandra behind them, and it felt like you could practically hear Bruceâs footsteps from inside the manor. âPlease⌠you canât be.â
âIt is trueâŚâ The air left your throat as you saw a muscular figure push past his children and there in the doorway you make eye contact with him, your father, Bruce Wayne. His gaze left like death by a thousand cuts, but you swallowed your fear and looked him dead in the eye as it felt he was daring you to say that again. âI am not lying, after all my mother taught me better than that.â
You heard your father sigh and rub his temples with his forefinger and thumb as he walked down the stairs, he was still acting like you were a child and the life you lived for the past four years has just been a game you have been playing with your friends at recess. âLetâs get you inside and we can talk this over while Alfred gets your room ready.â
When he reached out and grabbed your wrist you felt yourself stiffen up and there was not a moment of pause before Henbane reached out for his throat, a big mistake. Without skipping a beat, you saw your father release you and reach out and grab your masculine friendâs arm and flip him onto his back and then the next thing you knew you were pushed behind Clove as she had pulled out her handgun and had it pointed at your fatherâs head, another mistake, but it seemed your father was more in a negotiation mood. He glared down at Clove, looking her dead in the eye behind her thick glasses. âPut the gun down.â
âNo-â
âClove, put down the gun.â
âYou said this was going to be a visit! I donât want to lose you-â
âClove, please!â You were practically begging your friend at this point, you could practically hear her heavy breathing as she was on the point of tears and breaking down and sobbing. âClove...â
You just watched your father grab the gun from your friendâs hands, tossing it on the ground. He looked back to your siblings in the doorway. âDick, Jason, get them inside and sit her down, she needs to calm down.â
âBut-â
âNow!â
Dick didnât argue any further and he walked down the front steps and ushered Clove inside, talking to her as if she was a citizen in distress, meanwhile Jason just practically picked up Henbane over his shoulder and carried him inside as if he was just a giant sack of potatoes.Â
What vigilantes you all were.
You felt Bruceâs hand come to rest upon your shoulder and you looked him in the eye as he smiled at you, it should be comforting, a fatherly smile, but you just hated that look, it just always made you feel like there was a pit in the bottom of your stomach and you wanted to vomit.Â
âYouâre back home-â
âIâm not staying.â you cut him off and slapped his hand away. You glared at him, gritting your teeth behind your lips. âI only came because I was warned about something dangerous and because Taliaâs actions have let me walk outside again. So you would be wise to not to do anything, because if me or my friends arenât back before patrol tonight then I promise you all of Gotham will know who the Batman is along with the rest of you, and do not try me on this because I promise you I am not nor even was that helpless little girl you pictured me as.â
â...Fine, weâll discuss this inside.â

Apophenia Ch. 2
<< Chapter 1 | Chapter 3 >>
Patreon | Ao3
Words: 1,433
Summary: Often, the things we fear most don't happen. Often, but not always.
Content Advisory:Â Sexual situations and discussion (kissing, innuendo, touching), violence, choking/strangulation, threat of death/harm, mentions of traumatic past events (death of family members, bodily injury, survivor's guilt), abduction, hints of suicidal ideation
Not only was it nice, roomy with soft leather upholstery, it also had windows tinted enough that any passersby wouldâve had to press their face against the glass to see him straddling Renatoâs lap in the backseat. Not as private as an actual room, but good enough to let him switch most of his inhibitions off.
âDo you mind marks?â The question, breathed against the crook of his neck, set off a shiver.
âNo.â His overheated brain cells sparked. âWell, yes. I meanâŚI donât, but I, um. Have an important meeting coming up, so maybe keep them below the collar?â
âGladly.â Renato immediately undid the necessary shirt buttons, single-handedly continuing down the line without fumbling. Practice had apparently made perfect.
Isaacâs attempts to return the favor were hampered by a series of nibbles along his shoulder. He got the job done, though, his reward a swath of chest and stomach tight with muscle as advertised. Isaac traced one of the neat, thin scars curved beneath a pectoral, then its twin on the other side.
âEnjoying the view?â Renato leaned back to give him some more of it.
âWell, Iâm technically a tourist, right? Itâs important to see the sights. Take in the culture.â
Fingertips skimmed over the ripples of his ribcage and slid down his waist, coming to rest just above his hips. âAnd what other ways do you like taking it in, Isaac?â
âOne thing at a time. I donât like rushing.â
âWould you follow my lead if I played the guide?â
âMaybeâif I like what youâre showing me.â
A laugh and then firm hands slipped around to cup his ass, pushing his hips closer, forcing his knees wider apart. âAh, is that how it is?â
He reminded himself to breathe evenly, slowly. âUnless youâre going to convince me otherwise.â
One of the hands wandered up to bury itself in the curls at the back of Isaacâs head. A tug got him to tilt and expose a long, clean line of neck. Smirking, Renato leaned in and made an extremely persuasive argument with lips, tongue, and just a hint of teeth on the skin there. Reserves of dignity running into the red, Isaac squirmed. It wasnât enough to break free, even if heâd wanted to. There was an amused hum against his throat, and the hand still on his rear left to creep under his shirt. Fingertips found the network of scars crisscrossing Isaacâs back. They followed the trails of decade-old agony upwards, skimming over growing knots of tension in the muscles beneath.
Renato pulled away, eyes half-lidded. âIt looks like I got carried away and left a mark after all, lindo. Forgive me?â
The resulting rush of relief at not being questioned about the scars made Isaacâs head swim. Not only did he absolve Renato, he cupped his cheeks before bringing their mouths crashing together.
Stinging, searing pain pierced his bottom lip. Isaac jerked back with a gasp, eyes watering. Dabbing the spot, his index finger came away smeared with something dark. Blood, shining black in the sheltered gloom of the car. He mustâve cut himself on a tooth while attacking Renatoâs face.
Glancing up, he understood why.
His mouth partway open in a pant, Renato had revealed a pair of fangs. He stared at the seeping cut with pupils blown so wide only a thin ring of blue-green iris remained around them.
âShit! Bloodborn.â Isaac blurted. So far out on the coast? Heâd been under the impression they mostly stuck to cities in the Central States where they had a steady food supply. Then again, what did he know beyond Coven basic training? Heâd never met a vampire face-to-face.
The word induced a complete transformation. Renatoâs brows leapt up, his lips parting further in shock, even horror, judging from the way he recoiled. Isaac inhaled, about to reassure him maybe, definitely to make some inquiries, but a hand wrapped around his throat, cutting off his voice and air.
âCast a spell and Iâll kill you.â Renato sounded out of breath himself.
Isaac tried to explain that he neither knew any type of witchcraft nor had he been born a sorcerer. The weak croak that came out didnât quite cover it.
âListen very closely. Either nod or shake your head to answer. Understand?â
He nodded to the best of his ability.
âAre there others here with you?â
Regret struck immediately after his head shake. Should he admit to being on his own? He couldnât weigh the consequencesâhis mind was already curling up and crumbling around the edges from lack of oxygen.
Fangs snapped a hairâs breadth from his face. âDonât lie to me.â
Isaac added whimpering denials to the head shaking. The world around him blurred and spun. Maybe heâd get lucky. Maybe heâd pass out before he was killed.
âDonât scream. Scream and Iâll crush your windpipe.â
The pressure around his neck went from strangling to merely stifling. He sucked in whistling breaths as quickly as possible. Hyperventilation became the new reason for the white fog creeping over his vision.
âWhat were your orders? To distract? Delay?â
âWerewââ
Renatoâs fingers constricted again. âIâm the one asking questions.â
It took another round of head waggling and tugging futilely on his shirt sleeves to get him to relent.
âWerewolfs,â Isaac gasped as soon as he was able. Not correct, and not even the type of animal he was there to see, but it was the first word his brain coughed up.
More white showed around Renatoâs dilated eyes, turning them uncanny, doll-like. His hand slipped up Isaacâs shirt once more, probing the scars etched into his back.
âSon of a bitch,â he spat, retracting his touch, âyouâre one of Mayerâs!â
âWhoââ
A squeeze cut him off. âOf course. Why not? Because this job wasnât miserable enough without adding wet dog to the list.â Renato scowled, his pupils shrinking a fraction. âHereâs whatâs going to happen, my clever friend. Youâre going to get out of my carâslowly. You try to run, you die. You signal to someone, you die. You attract any sort of attention, you and the witnesses die. Iâm not in the mood to get rid of corpses, so itâs in both of our interests that you cooperate. Agreed?â
Not at all, but no viable ways to protest came to mind. Careful not to make sudden moves, he crawled out of Renatoâsâthe bloodbornâs lap. His hand went toward his tab, carelessly tossed onto the seat, but a disapproving hiss made him freeze.
âLeave it. Go.â
Isaac wound up standing beside the car, shivering and clutching the sides of his shirt closed, until the bloodborn joined him.
âAround to the back.â
Ice water flooded his veins when the trunk yawned open and he saw the contents. A rifleâthe kind that came in matte black and could mow down an entire herd of deer. An accompanying metal ammo box. Two small bottles of lighter fluid, zip ties, a cannister of salt. Not tools usually associated with marine biology.
Renato picked up the ties. His eyes had returned to normal, but didnât hold anything Isaac wouldâve called human anymore. âHands behind you.â
Coven field guides recommended resisting when it came to bloodborn. Fleeing, fighting, screaming, anything but being taken to a more private location. None of those actions had spared him or his family ten years ago, of course. The nightmare amalgamation of pale man and white wolf that had stalked into their campsite just couldnât have been stopped by ordinary means. Once the ragged claw wounds had become scars and the weight of survivorâs guilt on his back, Isaac had come to understand that. He also knew the same applied in the present situation, with one exception.
His gaze turned toward the little rest stop diner. The silhouettes of people through its softly illuminated windows. People who had friends, families, a place in their community. A cursed werecreature wouldâve torn through them indiscriminately. This monster with a human face tapping his foot impatiently was willing to settle for just Isaac.
He brought his numb, trembling hands around behind him. Winced as the zip ties were drawn tight. The bloodborn helped steady him as he crawled into the trunk.
Isaac didnât bother to thank him. Just curled up, pulling his feet away from the rifle, and said, âYouâre not going to get away with this.â It sounded weak, even to him.
Eyes glinted night-vision green above him. âMy performance reviews say otherwise.â
The lid came down and sealed Isaac into the darkness of his lightly upholstered tomb.

Long Lasting
High-quality skylights can last for up to twenty years or more if they are properly maintained, making them a sound investment that can add value to your property over time.
Space Saving
Because skylights are installed on ceilings, they donât take up any valuable floor space in your home like traditional windows do.
Safety
Skylights come with a variety of safety features such as tempered glass and shatterproof coatings to ensure you, your family and guests are safe from any potential injuries or damage associated with broken glass.
Increased Privacy
You can choose between clear, opaque or tinted glazing for your skylight depending on the level of privacy you want for each room. This makes them ideal for bathrooms and bedrooms where more privacy is desired.
Versatility
Modern skylights come in a range of styles and designs to fit any home, from traditional to modern.
Improved Security
Skylights can also improve the security of your home with options such as locking mechanisms for added peace of mind.
Customisable
You can customize skylights to meet your individual needs in terms of size, shape, colour and design.
Easy Installation
Professional skylight installation is relatively easy, taking a few hours or less depending on the type of roof you have and size of the window you're installing.
Cost Effective
Installing a skylight is more affordable than other lighting solutions such as recessed lighting and track lighting, making it a cost effective option for homeowners on a budget.
Environmentally Friendly
Skylights are eco-friendly because they reduce the need for artificial lighting, thereby reducing energy consumption and allowing homeowners to take advantage of natural resources.
Improves Quality of Life
Lastly, skylights can improve the quality of life in your home by allowing more natural light into rooms, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that is beneficial both physically and mentally.
Skylights provide a multitude of benefits for your home, from improved aesthetics and air quality to cost effectiveness and energy savings. If youâre looking for a way to bring in more natural light and create a warm atmosphere, skylights are a great option to consider. ![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/eb7749185e57869300ccff04dde7ed7b/674380db3c48a0d3-0b/s540x810/4af9bae07486a338b622ac91a9c55364afe9c255.jpg)
There are a lot of auto service providers in Australia who are offering different kinds of car brake repair services in Central Coast. You should make it a point to know more about the one that can provide you the most reliable services when it comes to car repairs. There are car owners who are not very familiar with the best places that they can get their cars serviced. There are some ways on how you can ensure that you will get the best service providers around you. If you want to know more about these services and where you can find the best ones, read the following.
One of the things that you need to do is to make sure that you have a mechanic that is qualified to do the brake repair services for your car. This is very important especially if you have an expensive car. There are a lot of mechanics out there who are not licensed to do such services and this can be very dangerous. There are also some car owners who are using very cheap mechanics which are not at all professional and this can be very dangerous as well.
Aside from finding a professional mechanic, you also need to look for one that is insured. There are a lot of services which are not covered by the insurance and you might be in danger if something happens to your car while they are servicing it. It is also a good idea to check their background as well. You should only choose the services of professionals if they have experience in the line. This way, you can be assured that they can do their job properly.
Car brake repair services in Australia are very expensive, especially if you go to major cities like Sydney and Brisbane. There are actually cheaper ways on how you can get your vehicles serviced besides going to these cities and spending a lot. There are actually many services providers in Sydney and other major cities which are not too expensive. These services are offered by local mechanics and they have been serving for quite a while.
If you want to save more money on your car's brake repair, you should opt to go to smaller cities. There are actually many mechanics which are not so experienced but are still serving well. It is important to check their background before hiring them to do the job. These smaller cities might have cheaper services and you can be guaranteed that you will get high quality service. The only thing that you need to do is make sure that their brake repair equipment works well.
The internet is also one of the best ways on how you can find cheaper car brake repair in Australia. There are actually a lot of websites which offer great deals on car repair equipment and you can find them very easily. Most of the time, these sites have online catalogs of their available products. You can browse through them and see which equipment would best suit your car's needs. Some of the common items included in car brake repair include brake pads, rotors, calipers, and drums.
Aside from these everyday tools, there are also other things that could be used to improve your car's performance. One of these is an auto window tint. This device is designed to partly protect your car's interior from harmful ultraviolet rays coming from the sun. By having this protective shield, you are able to keep your car cool and comfortable even during hot weather. Having tint on your car's windows could even help reduce the possibility of a break down during traveling.
Although there are already a lot of service providers that offer car repair services in Australia, it is still best to check the background of the one you are planning to hire. This is to make sure that you are going to get the best value for your money. Try asking other drivers or owners about the company they hired for their car maintenance and check if the company is still operating legally and in good standing. You should also do your own research online or to the phone to find out more about companies that could offer services near you.

Extract from Notes from an Island
As a new item in the literary presentations series, I'm publishing a short translated extract from Notes from an Island (Anteckningar frĂĽn en Ăś, Schildts, Helsinki, 1996), one of the last books by the Finland-Swedish author Tove Jansson (1914-2001) - most famous for her "Moomin" books for children, but also a distinguished writer of adult fiction. For over twenty years the small island of Klovharun, at the outermost tip of the Pellinge archipelago, about 80 kilometres east of Helsinki, the Finnish capital, and some 30 kilometres south of the town of Porvoo, was the summer home of the writer Tove Jansson and the artist Tuulikki Pietilä. This book is an account, by both women, of those years, in which they built a cottage on the island and then lived and worked there for considerable periods of time, away from âcivilizationâ. The book is written in the style of a memoir with diary entries, and is illustrated with tinted drawings and watercolours by Tuulikki Pietilä. The early chapters describe the days during the early 1960s when the couple were exploring the Pellinge maritime region and found the small island where they decided to build their home. We are introduced to BrunstrĂśm, the taciturn and opinionated local fisherman and workman who helps the two women in their search and gives them advice on building permission and other matters. With his colleague SjĂśblom, BrunstrĂśm is portrayed with humour as a character born from the surroundings and traditions of Finlandâs small Swedish-speaking community â in some ways he could almost be a character from one of Tove Janssonâs Moomin books, which also mirror aspects of Finland-Swedish life, with its sense of a culture within a culture, the expression of a people without a homeland as such, but with a strong sense of ethnic and cultural identity, and a close affinity with nature. Some of the diary entries in the earlier part of the book are presented as being the work of BrunstrĂśm himself. Tove Jansson describes the little island in detail, reflecting the way in which it represents all the aspects of Finnish nature in microcosm: the miniature forest, with paths, the exposed rock face, the central lake or lagoon, the seagulls and other birds, which the author portrays as being unhappy about the invasion of their living space by two human individuals. The construction of the house, which involves much blasting and dynamiting of rock, is recounted in detail, with copies of lists and surveyorsâ notes, and Tove describes how she and Tuulikki conceived the plan for the building: it was to have windows facing all the points of the compass: âone for the great storms, one for the reflection of the moon in the lake, one for the hill with its moss and polyps, and one facing north âso we can see what may come sailing along and so have time to get used to it.ââ One chapter describes the experience of watching the great break-up of the sea ice in springtime, and one receives a sense of the tiny world of the island as part of a huge natural universe of movement. The timelessness of the place is evident â and yet always the two women impress their creative skills on their environment, turning a remote and deserted rock-face into a workshop of artistic endeavour, without ever spoiling the harmony and equilibrium of the landscape and its creatures. We follow their day-to-day life, with its constant struggle with the elements, as when the sea carries away their entire supply of firewood, its trips to nearby communities for the essentials of life, its lists of supplies and tools, its outboard motors and above all the boat Victoria, which suffers shipwreck one stormy night, at the bookâs climax. In addition to being a miniature tour de force of autobiographical âdesert islandâ writing, Notes from an Island is also an important document that gives an insight into some of the existential sources of Tove Janssonâs literary talent. In particular, we begin to understand from within how the world of the Moomins developed, as we follow the authorâs deep and intuitive relation to the place and the living creatures that inhabit and frequent it â the gull Pellura, the seabirds, the local people, the postman, the cat, and so on. The illustrations by Tuulikki Pietilä complete the evocation of this world, that is at once very real and concrete and yet also suffused with a strange, muted, almost fairytale-like radiance. __________________________________________ from NOTES FROM AN ISLAND 1. I love stone: the cliff that falls straight into the sea, the rocky hill too steep to climb, the pebble in my pocket, prising stones from the ground and heaving them up and rolling the biggest ones straight down the hill into the sea! Down they rumble, leaving behind an acrid smell of sulphur. Searching for stones to build with, or simply stones that are beautiful, in order to make mosaics, bastions, terraces, pillars, smoke ovens, or strange, unusable contraptions made just for the sake of it; building jetties that the sea will take away next autumn; building more wisely next time, though the sea will take it all away again. My father was a sculptor, but Tootiâs was a carpenter, and thatâs why she loves working in wood, whether itâs shifting magnificent, heavy planks about or playing with feather-light balsa. In the forest we searched for juniper wood. On the shore we sometimes found strange, hardy species of trees with unfamiliar names. Tooti used them to make small objects that need time and great patience â why not make the smallest salt-spoon that has ever been made? âBut,â says Tooti, âitâs quite different when you build on a large scale, you have to be resolute and absolutely sure of your ability to measure and calculate and make it all work out to the last centimetre. Or millimetre. âSometimes building is done in order to hold and make steady, and other times itâs in order to decorate: sometimes itâs both.â Incidentally, Tootiâs engravings are done in pear-wood or beech, her woodcuts mostly in birch. She would often discuss materials with Albert Gustafsson in his boatshed on Pellinge; they also chatted about boats. He gave her suitable pieces of teak and mahogany to play around with, and Tooti took them all home with her and thought up ideas that were totally new. It was Albert who made the boat, in 1962, from mahogany, four metres long and clinker-built. It was the most beautiful boat that had ever been seen on that whole stretch of the coast. She was strong and supple, and positively danced on a heavy sea, her name was Victoria, as both Tootiâs father and mine were called Victor. Gradually, as the summers went by, Victoria became more and more Tootiâs as she was the one who loved the boat most and looked after it with the utmost care. There are many names for what we call an island: holm, skerry, haru, islet, atoll. The map of Pellinge shows an arc of uninhabited skerries west of Glosholm; they may be connected with a ridge of random formations on the sea bed. Kummelskär is the largest and most beautiful pearl in the necklace. I was very small when I decided to be the lighthouse keeper on Kummelskär. While it is true that thereâs only one lighthouse there, I planned to build a much larger one, an enormous lighthouse that would be able to survey and supervise the whole of the eastern Gulf of Finland â when I was grown-up and rich, of course. Gradually, my dream of the unattainable changed, and turned into a game with the possible; eventually it was just a cussed obstinacy that refused to give up, until the Fishermenâs Guild made no bones about the matter and said quite simply that it would disturb the salmon, and that was that. But about two and a half nautical miles from Kummelskär, in towards the coast, there were small islands that no one really knew anything about, and there it was possible to rent land. Remarkable that such a major and long drawn out disappointment could so quickly be forgotten for a new infatuation, but so it was â almost as soon as we moved in, we felt that weâd discovered paradise. We prettified and ruined with the same high spirits; we had everything, if only in miniature: a little forest with a forest path and moss, a little sandy shore with safety for the boat, even a little marsh with some tufts of cotton grass â we were proud of the island! And we wanted to be admired, to show off, we lured people there and they came, and came back, summer after summer, more and more of them. Sometimes they would bring a friend with them, or sometimes the loss of a friend, and they would talk and talk about their yearning for the simple, the primitive; and above all, their yearning for solitude. Gradually the island became filled with people. Tooti and I began to think about moving further out to sea. We made a half-hearted attempt with Kummelskär, but they said we would disturb the cod. After Kummelskär come MusblĂśtan, Käringskrevan and Bisaball, small inaccessible skerries where only fishermen and hunters can think of landing, and last in the series Klovharun, i.e. a haru (rocky island) that has split (cloven) in two. That was where we wanted to live. The island has an area of about six or seven thousand square metres, is shaped like an atoll with a lagoon in the middle, and is surrounded by rocks; at low tide the lagoon becomes a lake. It is said that at one time seals used the lagoon as a playground; that was before they thought the better of it and moved further out to sea. On the map, these smaller, almost outcast islands are marked as state property, but that is not true at all. The fact is that according to certain records, at some time in the eighteenth century, there was once a stormy committee meeting connected with the Land Reform; perhaps the conflict was put on hold because the secretary was prevented from attending the meeting by the icy conditions on the roads, but whatever the truth of the matter the islands were hastily registered as part of the community of Pellinge; âan indeterminate population, with no precise details.â As time passed, the community had grown considerably, and now it seemed it was no longer possible for us to apply for permission to lease land on Haru. However, like so many other islands with a will of their own, Pellinge had its own prophet whom one could ask for advice on difficult matters concerning the internal affairs of the group of islands. He advised us not to raise our hopes too high and above all not to depend on legal documents that sooner or later might only cause problems â no lease, therefore, but perhaps a small donation to the Fishermenâs Guild. Take it as it comes, he said, put up a list in SĂśderby for people to enter âyesâ or ânoâ â if I put âyesâ everyone else will probably do likewise. We put up the âyes or noâ list on the veranda door of the village shop and everyone put âyesâ. We sent the list to Porvoo Council and applied for building permission. While we waited, we lived on Klovharun in a tent. It rained all the time, Tooti was reading part six of The Vicomte de Bragelonne, by Alexandre Dumas. âThereâs nothing like the classics,â she said. âRead Les MisĂŠrables, unabridged, and then youâll understand the meaning of loyalty.â I know that Tooti is loyal to what she trusts, even afterwards. We had pitched our tent too close to the Great Stone, which is so great that it has become a landmark, at least for people who are finding their way more or less from hearsay. The Stone was estimated to weigh approximately fifty tons. It lies in an enormous frog pond in the only place where one could think of building beyond the reach of the sea. It rained all week, and the frog pond overflowed and trickled past down the hill past our tent and stank horribly. We dreamt of what the cottage would look like. It would have four windows, one in each wall. In the south east we made room for the great storms that rage in across the island, in the east the moon would be able to reflect itself in the lagoon, and in the west there would be a rocky wall with moss and polyps. To the north one had to be able to keep a lookout for anything that might come along, and have time to get used to it. We thought that if we built a cottage it ought to be quite high up the hill, but not right at the top, as that was the place for the beacon â perhaps just below the brow of the hill, so that the chimney would be visible from the sea. Against the light, in other words, and to those boats that stray past for no reason. Late one night we heard an engine being turned off down on the shore, and someone with a flashlight came slowly up the hill. He introduced himself. BrunstrĂśm from KrĂĽkĂś. BrunstrĂśm was out salmon fishing and had been planning to sleep the night in his boat when he saw lights on the island. We made tea on the primus stove. BrunstrĂśm is quite small. He has a taut, weather-bitten face and blue eyes, his movements are swift but measured, and he never uses adjectives in his everyday talk. His boat has no name. We trusted him, immediately. BrunstrĂśm had heard about the âyes or noâ list. âIt will never get through, he said, not even in Porvoo where they take life rather easy, take things as they come, as it were. Youâll never get permission to build. The only thing you can do is start building immediately. Itâll take the authorities ages to agree about what they want, and thatâs where you have to watch out. The law says that nothing can be demolished if the builderâs got the frame up to the roof-tree. Believe me, said BrunstrĂśm, I know about these things. Iâve built cabins in next to no time here and there, just in order to annoy people in the neighbourhood â folk from PernĂĽ and Pellinge, for example.â BrunstrĂśm went on to explain that he didnât need very much time, though one never knows with the autumn weather. Heâd take SjĂśblom with him and perhaps Charlie and Helmer, and before anything else, the Great Stone must be blasted with dynamite. BrunstrĂśm says that blasting and basements donât count as proper building, the house has to have a frame and the frame wonât last the winter without a roof. So there is not much time. âBefore the snow,â he says. translated by David McDuff

Homeward Bound: A Rahul snippet
Silent raindrops gather on the window of the bouncing carriage, and Rahul traces a finger on the tinted glass, mindlessly freezing them as he passes over them. Itâs been a long trip from Steyorn down the coast, and the finish line is in sight.
Mohaj is a bright coastal town, right on the sea, and even as the gloomy rain clouds darken the sky, the white and bright blue of the buildings lining the streets stand out stark against the dark. Rahul steps out of the carriage, pulling his scarf over his head to protect himself from the rainfall and shouldering his small bag before heading through the harborside marketplace.
Though itâs dark and rainy, some stalls are still open, though most are closing down for the night. The smell of fresh bread fills Rahulâs nose as he passes the bakery, just at the end of the market, and he stops briefly to enjoy the familiar scent.
âRahul? Is that you?â An old womanâs voice breaks through the steady drone of rain and Rahulâs thoughts.
He shakes his head and focuses on it, squinting through the darkness. âAnita?â he asks as he moves closer.  âItâs so good to see you!â
A broad smile spreads across Anitaâs face and she tries to lunge forward to wrap him in a hug, but she bumps into the display table in front of her, knocking a few bottles of spices and herbs down.
Rahul catches them with magic before they hit the ground, chuckling at Anitaâs surprised gasp as he places them back where they belong. Anita settles for taking Rahulâs hand in both of hers and looks him over, gaze pausing on his false leg for the briefest of moments.
Rahul adjusts his stance, moving the leg out of her line of sight. Heâs had enough of the pitied stares he receives at the palace, he doesnât need them here, not at home. âI should get going,â he starts and the way Anitaâs face twists in embarrassment makes his chest tight.  Not much brings him shame, but being pitied like this makes him feel broken.
âAt least take some bread with you,â Anita says, reaching over to the covered loaves in a box behind her. âI know your parents would appreciate the help.â
Rahul quirks a questioning brow at her but accepts the bread without a word, nodding his farewell as he travels through the quiet rainy marketplace without further incident.
Itâs been years since heâs walked these streets, but his feet know their path without even thinking. He lets his mind wander as he walks, fighting the urge to raise his head and lower his hood; in the dark and increasing downpour, thereâs nothing to see. But he knows the houses he passes, can remember that moon-shaped crack in walkway of the tailorâs shop--and he smiles at that particular memory.  He and his siblings used to be the terror of the town. Little lovable menaces.  He idly wonders if his little brother still has a scar from falling and making that crack.
As though his memory comes to life, he hears his brother call out to him, and when he looks up, he realizes where heâs standing. Â Home.
âFarid, what are you doing out there? Close that door this instant!â
Rahulâs eyes widen at the voice coming from inside, a little more haggard than he remembers, but familiar all the same. Â
Farid stands in the doorway, no longer a little brother. Heâs nearly towering over Rahul now, though his is not a menacing silhouette: all long and gangly teenage limbs. âWhy are you here?â he asks, pulling the door shut behind him.
Rahul isnât fazed by his brotherâs coldness. He holds out the bread Anita gave him, almost as a peace offering. âCan we at least do this out of the rain?â he asks with a nod toward the door.
Farid glares but finally nods, quickly stepping inside and leaving Rahul a small gap to squeeze through before shutting the door again. Â
As he lowers his scarf and his eyes adjust to the light, Rahul is taken aback at the sight of his childhood home. Dev, his older father, is moving between makeshift beds set up in the small central living area.  Sprawled on the beds, he can see the frail figures of his mother and youngest brother and sister. Quiet whimpers and coughs are interrupted by gentle hushing and cooing, and when Rahul enters the room proper, he sees his other mothers helping Dev care for everyone.
âWhat happened?â Rahul finds himself asking before even thinking about speaking.
Several heads snap in his direction, and Dev glares daggers at him, rising and looming in front of him in an instant. âWhy are you here?â  His tone sends chills down Rahulâs spine, but Rahul stands his ground.
âWhat happened?â he repeats, straightening up. His nose barely reaches Devâs shoulder, but he still feels more powerful at his full height.
âWhat do you care, city boy?â Dev reaches out as though he wants to shove Rahul, but he clenches his hands into fists and lowers them. As he spots the bread in Rahulâs hands, his eyes flash with anger.  âYou think youâre going to just swoop in and save the day?  You havenât been here for years. You do not get to come back and be the hero. This is not--â
âStop!â Rahul shouts, and an awkward silence settles over the house. âI didnât come back for some prodigal son bullshit!â  He shoves the bread at Dev and steps back, taking a calming breath and hiding his hands behind his back, unsure if everyone can see the flicker of flame heâs sure has built with his anger. âI have an important position in court; I donât get enough time off to come visit.  I only could this time...â he trails off, shuffling his feet, hoping to draw attention to his leg. Â
Dev seems to scoff at the sight of the false leg. âMagic has done nothing but take from this family.  Why should I feel bad that your choices have harmed you?â His voice is low and cold and he turns away from Rahul to face his sick family. âHira did this to us.  Trying to be like you.  Using magic she does not understand.â  When he turns back around, his gaze is hard but his eyes are glassy as he holds back tears.  âYou have poisoned us. For the last time.  Do not return here.â
âDev, heâs still your son,â Sarita, one of the mothers, argues. She rises to stand, taking Devâs hand with pleading eyes.  They have a silent conversation, Dev finally withering under her gaze, and she turns to Rahul, placing a hand on his arm. âYou will always have a place here.â
Rahul pulls free from her grip. âHeâs not the only one to hold such a low opinion of me. Hira is old enough to go to Ikrarius now.  Or send her to one of the smaller schools closer to home. But she has magic and she needs to learn to control it.â  He turns away from her sighing sadly and squaring his shoulders. âJust...take care of her,â he says over his shoulder before pulling up his scarf and heading back out into the growing storm, not looking back.

On the flight back to California, you kept replaying the weekend over in your head. Saturday was a busy day filled with meeting fans and having a Q&A at a local coffee shop. Wanda and you were both surprised with the turnout, and the fans had a ton of questions. Some were about your children, products youâve used, tips, and of course, a couple of questions about Star-lord. For the fun of it, you decided to record the event and upload it to the podcast page once you got back.Â
After the meet and greet, you and Wanda did a little exploring, like stopping at a few toy shops that sold Potts of Honey products. You walked through Central Park and stopped at a few souvenir shops and bought a little gift for Mer. It was a fun and productive trip.Â
Peter promised to keep Meredith for a few hours longer after you got back, so you could get stuff settled at home before he dropped her off. You put in some laundry, vacuumed, and sat down at your desk to get some work done.
A sharp, dull pain shot up the back of your neck as you let out a groan and opened your eyes. Ugh...what time was it? You lifted your head off your desk and noticed a piece of paper sticking to your face. You sighed, pulling it off and stretching your neck back and forth. You heard Meredithâs unique laugh, coming from the kitchen, they mustâve got here while you were sleeping in that uncomfortable position. You walked out of your office, letting out a long yawn that made your eyes water.Â
âDaddy, you're gonna burn the grilled cheese. Mommy wonât eat them if you burn them.â You stepped up to the kitchen doorway and leaned against it.
âIt will be fine, Twig. Itâs hard to burn a grilled cheese, and the tomato soup is going to be delicious,â Peter replied, standing over the stove with Mer sitting on the counter beside him.
âItâs from a can. You canât mess that up,â she blurted out, forcing a chuckle out of him.Â
âIâll let you in on a little secret.â He leaned in close to her. âYour mother burnt tomato soup once,â he said, making Mers mouth drop open.
âIn my defense, I got distracted. It happens,â you confessed, making yourself known. Peter turned around, shooting you with his boyish smirk as Mer jumped off the counter and ran over to you.Â
âMommy!â Mer jumped into your arms, and you held her close. You tighten your grip around her, squeezing your eyes shut. âI missed you!â
âI missed you, too.âÂ
âDid you get me anything?â Mer asked with innocent eyes as you two pulled apart.Â
âHow about you go get my bag from the living room, and Iâll show you,â you told her, making her eyes light up and take off to the other room. You stood up, watching her leave with a side smirk on your face.Â
âIâm happy youâre home, too,â Peter nodded as you turned around. âShe can be a handful on the weekends. Whew!âÂ
âI tried to tell you,â you chuckled. âI hope you were able to keep her under control.â You stepped to the other side of the room to stir the tomato soup. Peter licked his lips, keeping a watchful eye on you. âI want to thank you for watching her again.â
âItâs the least I could do after everything.â He cleared his throat, biting his lip. âI figured cooking you both dinner would be a good idea since you were passed out in your office.â You punch him on his bicep, feeling your face heat up.Â
âGot your bag,â Mer grunted, dragging it into the kitchen. You leaned down and opened it, handing her a stuffed teddy bear with âI <3 NYâ sewed on the belly. âI love it,â Mer squealed, holding it tight to her chest. She rushed over to Peter and hopped back on the counter. âWhat do you think, daddy?â
âIâm jealous I didnât get one,â he smirked at you as Mer giggled next to him. âAs I was saying, YN. You go relax. Me and Mer will finish cooking dinner.â
âYou sure?â
âPositive.â Peter turned back to the stove and flipped the grilled cheese. You walked out of the kitchen and took a chair at the dining table in the next room over. You werenât one to eavesdrop, but Peter was so sweet to her you couldnât help but listen in.Â
âI told you! I knew you were going to burn the grilled cheese. Itâs like you got distracted or something,â Mer joked, making you crack a smile across your face. âAre you going to join us for dinner, Daddy?â
âWish I could, Twig, but turns out I have to go to New York tonight for a day or so.â
âAwww, man,â she complained, letting out a loud sigh. âThat means I have to go to daycare with all those babies!â
"I'm sorry," he breathed a soft chuckle. "I think you can survive a day or two.â
âI donât know, dad. You donât know what itâs like in there. It changes a person,â she stated with a straight face, forcing him to shake his head unable to stop the smile gracing his lips. âWhat is in New York?â
"I'm going to listen to the girl from Queens, she's playing at a local coffee shop there. I remember a certain little girl mentioning how we should listen to her live-in person and see if she is as good as her demos are."
âYesss! Sheâs so amazing.âÂ
"I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner, it was kind of a last-minute decision."
"It's okay, Dad," Mer replied in a comforting tone.
âWould you mind buttering some more bread since I burnt this one?âÂ
âOn it, Grilled Cheese Burner.â
_______
You returned to work, and things couldnât have been busier. It was a crazy week so far, and it felt like it was flying by. The schedule you and Peter created was working out like a charm. You couldn't believe how much easier it was when two parents were involved. You hated to admit it to yourself, but you loved observing their interactions. You felt yourself falling for him all over again, and you hated how fast it was happening. What if you get hurt again? What would happen? How would you move on? He knew about Mer now so he would continue to be in your life. But damn, he was so good with her and it only made him more irresistible. Â
You got off work early and decided to go to the studio to pick Mer up. She wanted to ask Peter to the father-daughter dance happening on Friday, but she was nervous. You figured if you left work early, you could help her build up a little extra courage and ask him herself.Â
Walking into the studio, you waved at Mantis, and she pointed to the offices to the left while she continued talking on the phone. You nodded, making your way to Peter and Buckyâs office. You stopped by the doorway, seeing Peter and Mer playing together. A sincere smile formed on your lips, watching them interact.
âHi, my name's Korg,â Peter said in a gruff accent, shaking the toy. âI run this place around here. What's your name?"Â
âDaddy, you're so funny,â she giggled, leaning into his side. You didnât miss the heartfelt smile that spread across his face. It wasnât hard to notice that Peter enjoyed being a dad. He loved spending time with her, and he was turning out to be a great father.Â
âHi, YN.â
âOH SHIT!â You held your hand to your chest, turning around. âHey, Bucky.â
âIâm sorry. I thought you heard me,â he chuckled, coming to stand next to you.
âI didnât.â You punched him on his arm. âI forgot how sneaky you can be.â
âOne of my many skills,â he smirked, glancing into his shared office.
âMommy!â Mer came running at you and wrapped her little arms around your legs, pulling them into a hug. You leaned over, patting her back.
âHow was school?â
âIt was so much fun. My math is starting to get challenging, and I like it.â
âWhat like it isnât challenging enough already,â Bucky mumbled beside you.
âThatâs great. Why donât you go pack your things, and weâll go have dinner at Auntie Gamâs tonight?â
âYesâŚokay,â She paused, chewing on her bottom lip. âUncle Bucky, Iâm gonna need your help, come with me.â She grabbed his hand, forcing a laugh out of him as she pulled him along to get her bag.Â
âHey,â Peter greeted, walking up to you. âHow are things coming along at Potts of Honey?â
âItâs good. Weâre hoping to start building on the New York property in the next month or so. It's all happening really fast. And turns out, the podcast is more successful than we thought it was on the east coast.âÂ
âYeah, I listened to that Q&A podcast you did at that cafe. It was fun to listen to. You and Wanda are inspiring so many people.â
âI wouldnât go that far.â
âAre you kidding? Youâre incredible at what you do.âÂ
âThanks,â you gushed, feeling a blush tint your cheeks.
âAnd the whole New York facility sounds exciting, too. You're something else, YN,â he confessed. âDo you know who is going to be running it once everything gets settled?â
âI donât know. Thatâs a good question. I haven't....â Meredith interrupted you as she ran down the hallway shouting with her backpack strapped on tight.Â
âMOM, I AM READY TO GO!âÂ
Saying quick goodbyes to Mantis and Peter, you and Mer headed out to your car. You buckled yourself in and watched Mer strap herself into her car seat from the rearview mirror.
âDid you ask your dad if he wanted to go to the dance?â
âUmâŚno. He wouldnât want to go to some stupid kid thing anyways,â she sighed, looking out the window.
âYou don't know that,â you replied, unbuckling your seatbelt. âYou know what, we're not leaving till you ask him...let's go back inside?â
âNo, I donât want to.â
âYes, you do. I know you do,â you said, turning around in your seat. âI'm not asking him for you. Youâre a big girl. You can do this.â She shook her head, staring at the front seat. You stepped out of the car and opened her door. âHe will say yes, but only if you ask him.â
âHow do you know?â
âBecause Iâm your mother. Now come on, Meredith.â
âFinnnne,â she whined, unbuckling her seatbelt and getting out of the car.Â
âHey, Peter,â you greeted, walking back through the entrance. He glanced in your direction as he leaned against the front desk, chatting with Mantis. âMer wanted to ask you something? Sheâs nervous you might already have plans, but she has been wanting to ask you for a while now.â
âIs that right? Okay. Hey, Twig.â He walked over and leaned down in front of her putting his hands on her shoulder. âWhat is it? You know you can ask me anything right. No matter what it is.â
She looked at you standing next to her, and you nodded. âDid you want to go to this father-daughter dance at my school on Friday night?â
âFriday you say--â he hummed, thinking it over â--Iâd love to go! Iâll have to rearrange some things, but Iâll be there.â She smiled and wrapped him into a hug. He put his arms around her little frame and squeezed her tight before pulling away. âDo I have to wear a tux?
âYes,â she giggled and hugged him again. You smiled down at them. âDo you promise?â She asked, holding up her pinky finger.
âI promise, Twig.â He hooked his pinky with hers and swung it around, forcing a loud giggle out of her.
âNow let's get going, Gamora is waiting for us. I'll text you about the dance details, Peter, and figure out a game plan.â
He nodded. âSounds good, YN. See you two ladies tomorrow.â
Mer smile, waving goodbye. âLove you, daddy,â she shouted before walking out the door.Â
âLove you, too, Twig.â
âShe is so cute, Peter.â Mantis commented.
âShe is going to be a heartbreaker when she grows up,â he smirked, resting his elbows back on the front desk. Mantis chuckled, agreeing with him.
âWhen are you going to tell her the truth?â Nat asked, walking into the room.
âExcuse me?â Peter questioned, looking up from the paperwork in front of him.
âAbout how I work here." She twirled her finger in the air. "I hate hiding when she comes in. It's ridiculous how after all these years you still don't have the balls to tell her what happened.â
âIt's a sensitive subject." He furrowed his brows together. "Besides, I don't want to ruin what I have been trying to rebuild with her.â
âYou think this will ruin everything. Youâre an idiot. This will clear everything up beside when I was watching the security cameras I could tell sheâs still into you,â Nat added, crossing her arms.
He scoffed. âI doubt it. I mean, she...she doesn't even want to talk about what happened.â
âShe's trying to protect herself, doofus. She doesnât want to relive what she went through because it was hard on her, especially because she was pregnant.â
âIn my defense, I didnât know about that part,â Peter stated, forcing Nat to roll her eyes. âWhen the time is right I will tell her, but not right now!â
âFine, but now is the right time.â He shrugged, chewing on his lip. âBuck and I are going to dinner soon, did you want to come?â
âNo, I should stay here and catch up on some things.â Nat nodded at him as she walked back to her office.Â
Peter smiled at the paperwork in front of him thinking about the father-daughter dance. Would he still be able to fit into the silver tux he bought forever ago? Does he get her a corsage? Or a bouquet? Sure, he would have to cancel his plans with Bereet, but that was an easy fix, and sheâd understand, right? Peterâs mind continued to be filled with questions, but there was one that lingered in the back of his mind. Was Nat right about YN? Did she still have feelings for him? Nat has always been super observant, so could she be right?
_________
AN: Awww...now who's excited about this dance! The reader might be catching feelings, but how long will it take for her to realize he might feel the same? Slow burn, am I right? Nat seems to know the truth about why they broke up...hmmm...I wonder what it could be? As always thanks for reading!

living situations
Where do you live?
The question should have been simple, but it wasnât. It had become convoluted over the course of my existence, for I did not dwell, nor live in a specified setting. I inhabited a vacant space, fifteen miles northeast of Malibu, in a suburban locale that did not enliven me. I did not live in Sunset Hills. I simply kept a bed, in a home that was not mine, for when I felt too overwhelmed by my urban sentience. Today was one of those days.
Like the front of the house, the walls inside were sprayed banana cream. The popcorn ceilings of the seventies had been smoothed over and painted Swiss coffee, finished in ivory wood coving -- The variations of off-white were unintentional, as was the soot-speckled carpet beneath my feet, all selected in one rushed trip to Home Depot.Â
There were little connections to the outside world in this compound -- Solely because the modem and phone lines had been disconnected, and the cellular service was spotty at best. I craved this isolation, but on my own terms.
I paced around the house, as restless as I had been when I arrived with my mother, five years earlier. The choice had been my own: I sensed impending freedom from a strict upbringing, and a permanent escape from my fatherâs regime.Â
A month to the day before moving ninety minutes north of my hometown, I was gifted a taupe Honda Civic. My early attempts to venture further than Fullerton were thwarted -- I had edged toward the onramp of the Interstate 5, only to surrender to the illumination of my dashboardâs gold and crimson lights. The transmission was faulty, and the engine was weak. In Sunset Hills, I became accustomed to ignoring the glow of the indicators signaling imminent disaster.
Alas, an accident would total that car less than six months later. However, with that tragedy came a more reliable Civic, this time a vivid cochineal, which further enabled my newfound independence.
Where do you live?
My name had always been secondary, or tertiary, to this information. Others would ask this question within moments of meeting me, aware that my answer defined whether they would ever see me outside of our chance encounter. The query would roll off of their tongue; a natural precedent for finding a friend or mate.
I knew that once my answer was deemed a satisfactory radius from their home, the conversation could proceed.
With one-hundred and forty thousand miles on my car, one could state that I was a seasoned driver. Before I moved to Los Angeles last year, I would, at random, leave for Santa Barbara on a Saturday morning, only to veer onto the 154-highway toward San Luis Obispo in the afternoon. I presented myself as a woman of no set address, certain to never fully discuss my living situation. Geographically, I was to be perceived as nomadic. They looked past me, as though not holding a lease in Los Angeles was a detrimental quality; a trait appraised as fatally flawed.
The beginning of my response remained vague: Iâm from Southern California -- Raised in Fullerton. I paused at this juncture. Iâve survived Sunset Hills for four years, though spend most of the time in the city. I spoke with effortless certitude, as though I had convinced myself that distance was nothing more than a slight inconvenience; like a lover who loved inconsistently, or a friend who smoked without rolling down the windows.Â
At that time, I had felt isolated by my distance from Los Angeles, yet enjoyed my broad scope of experiences with the treasures of Ventura County, and Central California, and, of course, Echo Park. I took great pleasure in painting my face in Topanga, whilst driving to Santa Monica to meet someone new, then climbing up the one-oh-one highway to salute a past love in Agoura Hills.
My liaison with lengthy excursions ended in a lasting affair: a budding romance with a man from across the Atlantic, who had permanently settled across the street from Los Angelesâ most iconic cemetery.
I moved to his home in Hollywood at the close of my twenty-second year, attaining the status of living in the city, as I had yearned for so badly. The happiness it brought me was fleeting -- Los Angeles did not return my idealized ardor. I grew weary, as I had with Sunset Hills, though this time, I sensed entrapment. There was traffic, a lack of parking, and glowering police officers. The neighbors drank too much and sang too loud, spilling gin along the walkway; kicking cigarette butts beneath the damask rose planters. A neighboring home, built in the golden age of cinema, collapsed to the earth at the hands of real estate investors -- One-hundred silver apartments were to be erected in its place.
Moreover, I had letters addressed to me, and pay stubs that enforced my unforeseen adulthood. It was no longer twenty thousand miles per year, up the coast of California, away from the small anxieties that plagued my otherwise resolute demeanor. It was now only a fourteen mile roundtrip commute to and from work, with weekends spent in unimpressive cafes, clutching a notebook devoid of words, inspiration, and experiences.Â
Today, nearly one year later, I departed again for Sunset Hills.Â
------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunset Hills had a reputation for being a sleepy town, until a mass shooting at a bar left the suburb tinged with despair, loss, and confusion. It had returned to its quiet state, though the tainted air of tragedy never quite dissipated. The devastation had occurred shortly after I had moved to Hollywood, which made it all the more surreal to return.Â
It had once represented an escape from reality, with its uniform picket fences, topping the safest cities in the United States list yearly -- I had adored Sunset Hills, even as I attempted to leave it in my twenties.
I woke up exhausted, though I had slept away the wan afternoon, as uncharacteristically colorless as my thoughts had become. It was half past eight, and I hadnât left my bedroom since I had arrived, nearly twelve hours before. I needed to go outside.Â
In Sunset Hills, the one reminiscence I held dearly were my nightly walks -- I remained enamored and fascinated by the suburbs, with its perfect hedges, and cul-de-sacs, and silky evenings.Â
I wandered into the night, admiring the stars coalescing into rivulets of light. The absence of street lamps and cars left the foreground otherwise encapsulated in darkness, though the roads facing furthest east remained illuminated by distant cars, and unnamed motorways.Â
It was unseasonably cool for April -- Even in a coat, I sensed goosebumps on my arms, and reconsidered my decision to embark on this walk. Itâs necessary, I began. Itâs therapeutic.Â
I scrutinized the houses and vegetation against the asphalt. The viridescent blades of grass that filled all front yards were false, though the pristine landscaping held some reality in its flowers. The grass that protruded from the cracks of the sidewalk was kaleidoscopic with rock salt, and the remaining blades, with crystals of dew, were half-trampled. All of the dandelions I could recall had been wished upon, with only their stems littering the earth.
I turned the corner, acknowledging that the streets were named after English philosophers and artists. But what is the significance of Dryden or Galsworthy, in this achromatic setting? Perhaps it was to invoke the spirit of creativity unto the inhabitants, or to remind us that the Earth existed intelligently before we did.
The ennui of marriage appeared in the form of a sole sports car in the garage, and the four door sedan in the driveway, with tinted back windows. The family car, the fun car -- I thought of my fatherâs fun car, which was a 1990â˛s Mercedes SL. My mother knew she was not the sole female passenger, as the scuffs of foreign heels had marred the seats.
Silhouettes of anonymity shaded the bay windows of several houses I walked past -- Husband and wife, or father and daughter. They ate expressionlessly, without looking at each other, while the glow of the television, and its thunderous bass, substituted dialogue for noise this evening. My eyes dropped to the sidewalk, with the names of lovers scrawled into the cement. When is the pinnacle of love? When is its descent? I envisaged my darling, at our home in the city, dining alone. I wondered if he thought of me with the same tenderness as he did when we first met, and if he would have etched our names into the bark of a tree, or penned an inscription onto his beating heart.
I let my mind wander -- Twenty-thousand miles per year, up the Californian coast. But what I had been running from, and where had I been going?
The suburban milieu set my thoughts aflame, just as Hollywood had devoured my fervor for life. Both settings inflicted reality unto me, but far too late. I wanted to run, desperately -- But, shackled by fate, I had nowhere left to go.

How to Choose a Window Tinting Company
Car window tinting is relatively inexpensive, but how do you choose a good company? To begin, find a company with a good BBB rating and high online reviews. Customer satisfaction should be the number one priority. Read on to learn how to choose the right window tinting Central Coast NSW company. This article will outline the different types of film and the costs associated with them. Also, you'll learn about the different types of window film.
Cost of Car Window Tinting
Whether you're looking for an elegant look for your car or want to make a statement, you can have your windows tinted. Experts in car window tinting Central Coast NSW can customize the film to fit the style of your car, whether you want to improve the functionality or regulate the temperature of your vehicle. The tint can also be a safety feature, as dark window tint can interfere with visibility. Not to mention, it can interfere with visibility when driving at night, during sunsets, or during stormy weather.
Cost of Decorative Film
The cost of window tinting is dependent on several factors. Firstly, the size of your windows plays a huge role in determining the cost. Multi-storey houses tend to have many varying-sized windows, so the installation can be challenging. Secondly, the type of film you choose to tint your windows will affect the cost as well. For maximum heat protection, opt for a reflective mirror-like film with a low VLT.
Cost of Ceramic Film
If you're considering getting window tinting for your car, you'll want to ask yourself: How much will ceramic film cost? It depends on the brand, job size, and type of film you get. Bronze or reflective film is very effective at blocking heat and is almost exclusively used on industrial and commercial buildings. While many homeowners don't like the reflective look of this film, building owners appreciate its cost-effectiveness.
Cost of Dye Film
The cost of window tinting is a critical decision for both your comfort and the reduction of heat. Some shoppers focus on the initial cost while others opt for the cheapest installer. While you might be able to save money by choosing an inexpensive installer, you will often sacrifice quality film and customer service for a low price. Cheap installers also cannot remove the film for free and can't guarantee you the best results.
Cost of Reflective Bronze Film
The reflective bronze film is a type of window tint that provides excellent solar control and privacy while complimenting the exterior of the building. This type of tint is not opaque and is particularly useful for office buildings. The cost of reflective bronze film for window tinting Central Coast NSW varies from business to business. Here are some tips for comparing prices:

Ex-Laker Sasha Vujacic Lists Marvelous Manhattan Beach House for $3.8M
Rob Foldy/Getty Images
Former Los Angeles Laker Sasha Vujacic is selling his slam dunk of a house in Manhattan Beach, CA, for $3.8 million.
Remembered fondly by Laker fans as the man who drained the two clutch free throws to win the 2010 NBA Finals over the Boston Celtics, the guard hasnât played in the NBA since a stint with the New York Knicks in 2017.
These days, Vujacic spends a lot of his time helping run his familyâs winery and olive oil business, located on 30 acres in Paso Robles, according to the Los Angeles Times. Itâs perhaps because heâs spending more time up the coast in Central California that heâs listing this incredible beach house, a place Vujacic scored a decade ago for $1.85 million.
The three-bedroom, four-bathroom, 2,100-square-foot home sits just two blocks from the beach and has amazing ocean views all the way from Catalina Island to Malibu.
Wraparound decks and tinted windows help make the ocean the main focus in the home. Recent updates, like the addition of white oak floors, mean that it maintains a modern, luxurious feel throughout. A detached one-bedroom apartment offers convenient accommodations for guests or staff.
Perhaps best of all is the custom garage offering ample parkingâa true beach luxury.

During his three years with the Los Angeles Lakers, Vujacic helped the squad win rings in 2009 and 2010. According to the L.A. Times article, basketball and his family business (the S&G Estate) are his twin passions.
âAs much as it was my dream to come to L.A. and win with the Lakers, the silent side dream was to have a family wine business with my mom, dad, brother, and sister,â Vujacic told the newspaper. âBoth of my dreams have come true.â
Now his killer beach house awaits a buyer who loves luxe oceanside living. All thatâs missing is a glass of award-winning Bordeaux from the family winery. Surely, Vujacic would throw in a bottle or two to seal a deal. Cheers!
