PLACES OF COBBLE HILL
The Cobble Hill, Boerum Hill, Carroll Gardens and Gowanus neighborhoods, arrayed south of Atlantic Avenue from 3rd Avenue west to the East River and north of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and Gowanus Canal. Each are relatively distinct: Cobble and Boerum Hills, comprising the few blocks south of Atlantic Avenue east or west of Smith Street respectively, feature block after block of Brooklyn’s most expressive and diverse residential architecture. Cobble Hill is Brooklyn’s second-largest Italian-American enclave after Bensonhurst, while rough and ready Gowanus, closest to its namesake canal, is the former haven of the Mohawk Indians who worked on Manhattan’s skyscrapers in the 30s till the 60s and beyond.
In December 2018 I thought it would be fun to walk down four separate Places in Cobble Hill that run between Kane and DeGraw Streets and Court and Columbia Streets: Tompkins, Strong, Cheever, and Tiffany. At one time, I harbored the notion that they were named for famous people I had heard of, such as diarist George Templeton Strong, author John Cheever, Vice President Daniel Tompkins, and the Tiffany family of jewelry and stained glass fame. In most cases, the reality is rather more prosaic. Also, only part of Cobble Hill is under Landmarks Preservation Commission protection, so my knowledge is limited on a some of what I’m seeing, so my descriptions will in the main be the “Look at that, isn’t that purty” ilk. Those aren’t the only streets I explored…
Here’s a relatively new office building at #240 Atlantic Avenue and Boerum Place. It bucks the recent trend of interchangeable panels with large windows and uses brick construction — and even brings back the old tradition of carving the intersectioned streets in the building corners! Just across the street is the Brooklyn House of Detention. I never remember anything being in this space but a parking lot.
Boerum Place is the most schizophrenic street in Brooklyn. On its southern end, between Atlantic Avenue and Bergen Street, it’s a modest one-lane neighborhood street, but north of Atlantic, it (along with Adams Street, which it becomes north of Fulton) become six-lane behemoths funneling traffic onto the Brooklyn Bridge (there are some “Brooklyn Bridge Boulevard” signs). When the city razed much of the area around Fulton Street east of Court Street to create Cadman Plaza in the 1950s, Boerum and Adams were given steroids at the same time. Along with Schermerhorn Street (inexplicably pronounced “Skimmerhorn” by Brooklynites), Boerum Place is a reminder of Brooklyn’s Dutch colonial past. Many Boerums settled in Brooklyn, but this Place, and the Boerum Hill area, recall Simon Boerum, while Boerum Street in Williamsburg recalls Jacob Boerum.
Again, some new bricks, or at least faux bricks, with wood paneling at Boerum Place and Pacific Street. Maybe I’m nuts or I’m not the philistine I once was, but I don’t really mind this. Thoughts?

#120 Boerum Place at Dean Street was originally a factory (for what I do not know) and was converted to condominiums in 1983, with a jogging track on the roof (hence the name Skytrack).
More new bricks and wood paneling, this time on Dean Street off Boerum Place.
Vinnie’s Italian Art Iron Works, established in 1963 by Vincent Pampillonia, harks back to Boerum Hill’s industrial past. “For 48 years, Vinnie’s Italian Art has been specializing in the restoration and recreation of ironwork that can mostly be found in countless brownstones and landmark buildings throughout Brooklyn and Manhattan.” The iron works is accompanies on the south side of Bergen Street by a row of handsome woodframe buildings, an increasing rarity.
Dominating upper Cobble Hill is St. Paul’s – St. Agnes Church, a very old church built in 1838 and designed by Gamaliel King on land formerly owned by a furrier, Irish immigrant Cornelius Heeney, who served a a guardian to a boy named John McCluskey, who later became the USA’s first Cardinal. While Heeney donated some of his property to this church, he also donated some of his Manhattan Island holdings so that St. Patrick’s Cathedral in midtown could be built, and also donated pews and gallery fittings to St. Peter’s on Barclay Street in lower Manhattan – thus, Heeney had a hand in some of NYC’s oldest extant Roman Catholic buildings. Heeney is interred in the churchyard here.
Angela’s Ashes author Frank McCourt was baptized here in 1930 before his family returned to Limerick, Ireland in 1934. The co-parish, St. Agnes on Hoyt and Sackett Streets, is one of Brooklyn’s largest churches.
Believe it or not, I had never once walked on the dead-end section of Verandah Place, a former mews, that’s east of Clinton Street at Cobble Hill Park. Clearly, that situation had to be rectified.
A veranda or verandah, as it’s spelled here, is a roofed, open-air gallery or porch, attached to the outside of a building. A veranda is often partly enclosed by a railing and frequently extends across the front and sides of the structure. There may have once been verandas on this alleyway, but not anymore. It’s possible they were once found on the north side of the Place, which is now occupied by the 6-story residential towers at #200 and 210 Congress Street.
A trio of three former stables, long ago converted to residences on Verandah Place east of Clinton. This stretch of the Place reminds me of Hunts Lane and Grace Court Alley in Brooklyn Heights, a bit to the north. These buildings went up between 1876 and 1878.

Cobble Hill Park, between Verandah Place and Congress Street west of Clinton Street, is relatively new. Its area was formerly occupied by the Second Unitarian Church from the 1850s to 1961, along with a pair of old mansions. All were torn down before the LPC could designate the area, and they were replaced by a rubble strewn vacant lot. Plans were formulated to build a Bohack supermarket in this heavily residential area, and residents fought a pitched battle against it. They won out, and the land was rededicated to park use; Cobble Hill Park opened in 1965.
I decided to photograph every one of the small, 2-story brick dwellings, also former stables, along the south side of Verandah Place facing the park. All date from about 1845-1865, and many have their traditional brick fronts. The smallest of them is #40, which was cut back to make way for residences on Clinton Street in the 1800s. In 1931, it had a famous resident, North Carolinian Thomas Wolfe, of Look Homeward, Angel and Of Time And The River fame. “Only the dead know Brooklyn,” he wrote.
The most unusual house on Congress Street, with its Queen Anne dormers and turrets and nearly triangular bay windows, is #147 — it’s also one of the most recently built, going back to 1900 or so, just off Henry Street.
An imposing building indeed at 380 Henry between Warren and Congress, now the Cobble Hill Health Center but originally St. Peter’s Hospital. Consulting my Francis Morrone, I see that it was once associated with St. Paul’s/St. Agnes. It was constructed in 1888-1889, what must be the two greatest years in NYC architecture, by William Schickel & Company. The hospital closed in 1962, became a nursing home and was then subjected to the usual scandals that nursing homes undergo, as the elderly are sometimes considered nuisances in our society. The building was renovated in 1989 and attained its present use at that time.
#120-126 Congress, on the south side of the street between Hicks and Henry, are handsome attached brick dwellings going back to around 1880.
Meanwhile, #110-118 Congress make up a group of relatively new buildings that appear to be modern updates of the previously shown quartet. They are all on land formerly owned by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn. These buildings were constructed in 2015.
Congress Street is bridged over the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway at Hicks Street. The BQE divided Cobble Hill into two sections when it was cut through the region in the late 1940s and early 1950s, as many homes along Hicks and the east-west streets were demolished to make way for it.
A remaining chunk of Brooklyn’s once-thriving shipping business can be found along Columbia Street between Atlantic Avenue and DeGraw Street, which serves to protect the view of Manhattan Island from there. The two tall buildings are part of the One Brooklyn Bridge Park complex at Atlantic Avenue and Furman Street.
#140 DeGraw Street at Tiffany Place is not a new building, but a radical transformation made possible because Cobble Hill west of the BQE is not under Landmarks guidelines. Unusually the whole exterior is essentially a bay and residents can have a three-way view. These days a 2-BR here sells for over $1M, but when it was first transformed in 2007 the cost was a “mere” $750K.
Tiffany Place, my favorite of the Cobble Hill Place Quartet because of its surviving Belgian Blocks, is likely thought by area denizens to be named for Louis Comfort Tiffany, but maps show it as early as the 1840s — long before the glassmaker ever built a factory in Brooklyn or elsewhere. There was a state senator from the area named George Tiffany in the early 19th Century, and that’s likely the source. You will find the famed Tiffanys in Brooklyn, though, since the family, including Charles Lewis of dry goods and later, jewelry fame, is interred in Green-Wood Cemetery.
As stated, I’m fascinated with Tiffany Place’s well-preserved paving stones. It’s the only street in the area, other than parts of Joralemon Street, that still features them. One of these days, I’d like to see a comprehensive NYC map indicating where the remaining Belgian blocked streets are.
Tiffany Place features prime examples of my favorite variety of NYC housing, attached brick construction. The street is outside the Cobble Hill landmarked district, so I wish I could find out more about these buildings.
#1 Tiffany Place, at the corner of Kane Street, is the largest of these brick houses on the street, and it is the building that caused the misconception about Tiffany Place being named for Louis Comfort Tiffany. Somehow, an idea got around (likely from real estate agents) that this was a Tiffany glass factory at one time. According to Lost City, the records don’t show it. The building had been home to Walther and Company, which produced “fancy papers” or paper used for wrapping or in wedding invitations. I was hoping the Belcher Hyde 1929 atlas would settle the issue, but it merely shows it as a large brick building.
Older maps show Kane Street as Harrison, and this chiseled sign at Cheever Place bears that out. The name was changed in 1928 to honor James Kane, a longtime local election commission alderman and police sergeant. Were a similar honor bestowed today, Harrison Street would likely have kept its name with James Kane honored on a separate sign.
Cheever Place honors Samuel Cheever (1787-1874) one of three commissioners who laid out the grid system of streets in this area. He was an attorney who hailed from upstate Saratoga County.
More attached brick buildings! The Greek Revival houses at #10, 12 and 14 Cheever were built in 1839.
These attached Italianate brick buildings went up in the 1850s. Not pictured are #43-45, built in 1873 as two of Brooklyn’s first apartment buildings.
When completed in 1852 this was the Early English Gothic Strong Place Baptist Church at DeGraw Street. The architect was Minard Lafever, who built other churches in the region, notably St. Ann’s at Clinton and Montague Streets. According to Francis Morrone, it was Lafever’s own personal favorite. About a decade ago (late 2000s) it was converted to residential.
Strong Place’s brownstones go back to between 1872 and 1892.
Two pairs of Queen Annes on Strong Place, #41-43, and #33-35, have retained their triangular bay window treatments. The new building shown above at #140 DeGraw takes this feature to the max, making the entire facade a triangular bay.

Tompkins Place may or may not be named for NYS Governor and Vice President Daniel D. Tompkins (1774-1825) though Bedford-Stuyvesant’s and Rosebank, Staten Island’s Tompkins Avenues, as well as Tompkins Square Park and Tompkinsville certainly were.
It’s been shrouded under construction netting for a couple of years, but this historic building at Tompkins Place and Kane Street has been the Kane Street Synagogue since 1905, the oldest Jewish temple in the immediate area. The building was constructed in 1855 as the Middle Reformed Protestant Dutch Church.
One of these is not like the others! This Greek Revival row on the east side of Tompkins Place was built in the 1840s, with the mansard and dormer windows of #15 were likely added in the 1870s or 1880s.
Yet another stretch of beautiful brick buildings, the Italianate brick buildings at #22-28 Tompkins Place go back to the early 1850s.
Working back around to Court Street, I’ve aways been fascinated by this attached quartet, #194-200, which when built was collectively known as Foster Block. It’s a bit of nomenclature not generally employed in NYC, but when I was in Portland ME a few years ago, I noticed quite a few “blocks” meaning attached buildings. They have retained their usual entrances.
Back on Bergen Street east of Boerum Place, here’s a pair of stables turned residences at #48 and 52, separated by a church that may have been a stable itself.
Another bit of fascinating reuse is at #51 Bergen, where a former belt factory has become the Invisible Dog Art Studio:

A’ight here’s the rundown on Richard Varick: Richard Varick was born in Hackensack, New Jersey on March 25, 1753. He studied Law under John Morin Scott, a successful New York Lawyer and founding member of the Sons of Liberty, in 1771 and studied for three years. He was then admitted to the Bar in October of 1774 and accepted a partnership with Scott that they had until the outbreak of the war eight months later. Varick joined the elite New York Militia Battalion and then, on June 28, 1775, was commissioned as a Captain in the 1st New York Regiment and served in that capacity for just three days before being nabbed by Philip Schuyler as his secretary thanks to Scott’s influence. Philip Schuyler then turned North and started for Fort Ticonderoga in order to launch the failed campaign into Canada. On the way north, Varick would meet Benedict Arnold for the first time and become fast friends and allies with him as well as Philip Schuyler. When Schuyler fell ill with a severe case of gout and rheumatism, he went back to Albany to recover, bringing Varick along with him. In Albany, Varick worked three jobs: secretary to Schuyler, unofficial quartermaster for the Forts of the Northern Army, and Deputy Munster Master General of the Northern Army. He was awarded the rank of Lieutenant Colonel by Schuyler for his hard work when he was promoted to the later. When Arnold was trying to build a fleet to stop the British Advance south, Varick picked up a fourth task: finding ship builders and materials. Varick worked tirelessly at the task, frantically sending out letter after pleading letter to businessmen all throughout New York and it’s neighboring states to provide Arnold with the supplies and men necessary for building the fleet and, somehow, it got done. Arnold set out to fight the British at Vancouver Island on October 11, 1776. A month later, on November 18th, he was at Fort Ticonderoga when a man named Anthony Walton White tried to assassinate him. A detailed account of that event can be found in this post I made. When the British successfully took Fort Ticonderoga in 1777, Schuyler was blamed and then replaced by General Gates in August. Varick was incredibly bitter about this. He hated Gates and anyone who was friends with him and all throughout the Saratoga campaign he praised Arnold and criticized Gates in every action. Varick also served as acting Muster Master General when the man who actually held the position, Joseph Ward, was captured in November 1778 during an unexpected raid by the British. Varick was called to Headquarters by Washington specifically to serve as head of the muster department in Ward’s place for several months and was about to be given the position officially on April 6th, 1779 when Ward was exchanged and Varick relinquished the position back to him, returning to Albany. Varick continued to serve as Deputy Muster Master General until the muster department was terminated by Congress on January 12, 1780. He decided that he would return to his hometown to resume his law career and wrote to Schuyler detailing his plans but, when he arrived, he found that his hometown had been recently attacked and raided by the British, leaving many of its homes in ruins. He joined the Bergen County militia instead of resuming his studies and served on patrol every other night. He was very frustrated with serving in an amateur militia after everything he’d done and the only reason why he didn’t leave was that he was concerned about what the neighbors might think if he did. In August 1780, a letter from Arnold would rescue him from his frustrations. Benedict Arnold wrote to Varick asking him to be his aide-de-camp and military secretary as soon as he’d been given command. Schuyler had told Arnold that Varick would probably be willing to accept the position and Arnold, aware that Varick had wanted to resume his Law studies before returning to the practice, also wrote that the position would only occupy a small amount of his time and allow him to continue his studies if that’s what he wanted. Varick accepted the position on August 7th, 1780 and would arrive at West Point just a week later. While working for Arnold, Varick and his fellow aide, David Franks, picked up on Arnold’s suspicious activities, but Varick admired Arnold and simply believed that he was only doing some illegal trading with some merchants in New York City. Varick was sick in bed with a fever when Arnold’s treason came to light. Franks had appeared by Varick’s window to whisper to Varick from outside that news had arrived of a spy that had been captured and that, upon hearing the news, Arnold started behaving strangely. Varick was upset at what Franks was implying and insisted that Arnold was “a gentleman and friend of high reputation and that it was uncharitable and unwarranted even to suppose it.” Varick was completely stricken when Arnold was revealed to have been a traitor. Varick and Franks were both put on trial for involvement in the Arnold affair and eventually cleared of any crimes, but the suspicions did not go away. Varick asked Washington for help and that Washington publish the court-martial’s findings and a certification of his character, but Washington refused because he did not have the money nor the authority to do such a thing. Instead, Washington invited Varick to join his military family and gave him the responsibility of arranging, copying, and organizing every single correspondence and record from headquarters including many confidential documents. Varick was officially appointed on May 25, 1781, and would continue to toil away at his project until it’s completion near the end of the war, after which he resigned because his task had been completed. His project became known as the Varick Transcripts and consisted of 44 large volumes, each 300+ pages long, and consisting of nearly every single official letter or order issued by Washington during the war along with many of Washington’s personal letters. It’s thanks to this project that we have much of what we have today in relation to Washington’s War career. As I said in this post, there are 6,193 letters on Founders attributed to the Varick Transcripts. So much would have been lost if it weren’t for him and the small staff he’d employed to help him complete his mission in just over two years. Following the war, thanks to Washington’s show of faith, all suspicions of him were cleared and he led an extremely successful career. He soon became the recorder of the City of New York, which made him the second in command of the city's government, as well becoming the Chief legal counsel of New York City. He married Maria Roosevelt in 1786 (he was 30 and she was 20 at the time) and they had no children. Additionally, Varick helped codify the city’s statutes in 1786, was speaker of the Assembly 1787-1788 and was Attorney General 1788-1789. He did all of these things while continuing to serve as recorder. In 1789, Varick was appointed Mayor of New York City by George Clinton and served in that capacity until 1801 when the government was swept by the Democratic-Republicans. He went on to be involved in various business projects including the development of Jersey City, New Jersey and being one of the appraisers of the Erie Canal in 1817. He was also a trustee of Princeton/Columbia University for 29 years, generously donating both his time and money to the college. He had a leadership position in the American Bible Society and the American Sunday School Union. He was present when what remained of the Continental Army Officers Corps assembled in 1825 for Lafayette’s tour of America. He was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, was active in the society’s charity work, and was president of the New York state’s chapter of it from 1806 until his death in 1831. Knowing that his death was imminent, he made an emotional trip out to Mount Vernon in May of 1831 before returning to his summer home in Jersey City where he would die a couple months later on July 30th, 1781 at the age of 79. His funeral was a huge affair, his body transported from Jersey City to New York City where it was met by a large military escort. His funeral was attended by a vast amount of people and numerous members of the Society of the Cincinnati wore badges of mourning. John Trumbull, one of the last surviving aides-de-camp to Washington, was one of his pallbearers. He was buried in his hometown of Hackensack, New Jersey. 4th AVENUE IND STATION
I’ve explored the 4th Avenue IND station at 9th Street in Park Slope before for Forgotten New York, way back in 1999 when the station was almost in ruins. Since then, the station has been cleaned up considerably, but repairs have been carried out only halfway; the project must have run out of money, and surprisingly, there’s been very little news about its completion, and I’ve seen no outcry about it from local residents or politicians. I’ve always been interested in this unusual elevated station and its partner, the Smith-9th Street station, the next station to the west, because they are the only two elevated stations the IND constructed in the 1930s.
One of my favorite subway websites is Vanshnookenraggen, the pseudonym of Andrew Lynch, who writes about a NYC subway system that never was, or one that never will be. Entries talk about subway lines that were never built; Lynch is also a cartographer, and produced detailed system maps of these “lost” systems. One was the IND Second System, which would have placed subways under 2nd Avenue in Manhattan, the northeast Bronx, southeast Queens, places they don’t go today and likely never will. Work actually got started, asome stations were built, but depression, war and new recessions happened; you know the rest.
Well, some sections of this Second System would have been elevated. What would an IND Elevated look like? For those unfamiliar with subway history, the IND was developed by NYC beginning in the 1920s to compete with the IRT (the number lines) and BMT (many of the letter lines) and had a much different design esthetic than the older lines; less ornamentation and mosaics, and a much more utilitarian look. It’s immediately apparent when you compare stations on the A/C/E and F lines, say, to the stations of the 4/5/6 train. As it happens, the 4th Avenue and Smith/9th Stations pointed the way to what prospective IND elevateds would have looked like–concrete-clad viaducts instead of iron pillars, for example.
The IND was built on two trunk lines in Manhattan on 6th and 8th Avenues, and forayed into the Bronx on the Grand Councourse, Queens on Queens Boulevard, and Brooklyn as far as Park Slope, where it originally ran as far as Church Avenue. Today’s A through G lines mostly run on tracks built for the Independent.
In 1940, the city purchased the IRT and BMT and “unified” the subway with the IND. Many more free transfers between lines were instituted, but it wasn’t really until two key connections between the BMT and IND were made at the Manhattan Bridge and in the East River tunnels in the 1960s that trains from the two old rivals could truly intermingle. Though there are plenty of free transfers to the IRT, because the cars and tunnels are narrower on the IRT (which was the “original” subway going back to 1904) there is no such intermingling of IRT cars on former BMT and IND lines to this day. True integration has never been accomplished.
The IND built just two elevated stations in Brooklyn in 1933, the tallest station in the system, Smith/9th (tall enough to let tall masted ships on the Gowanus Canal) to pass beneath it; and the Fourth Avenue station, lower because it is built just west of a tunnel entrance. There had been plans for the IND to build an elevated station that would connect the Roosevelt Avenue station in Queens with the Rockaways which would have been elevated in Glendale and Ridgewood, but the Depression and World War II canceled those plans; in 1956, the Transit Authority reached the Rockaways anyway by rehabbing a Long Island Rail Road trestle over Jamaica Bay that had burned in 1950, and then extending the A train over the former Fulton Street Elevated to meet it.
At the Fourth Avenue IND elevated station (opened July 1, 1933), the tracks are close to the ground, but still high enough to require bridging over the avenue. Engineers came up with a beautiful arch bridge with Art Deco accents. For the first few decades of its existence, the windows on the platforms were clear and allowed a view north to the Williamsburg Building and south toward Bay Ridge.
The windows on the arch bridge had been painted brown for many years, since at least the 1970s; I remember grime-caked windows you could see through as late as the Sixties. The MTA was tired of vandals graffiting and breaking them, so the agency just painted them opaque. Now and then, though, the paint flaked off and permitted a view.
For much of the last decade now the MTA has been rehabilitating the windows and has actually finished with the eastern set, but has installed an opaque covering on the windows, apparently so no one will think about breaking them. I’m not sure when, or if, the western set will reopen, and that set of windows remains covered by plywood.
Three of the original Art Deco-influenced pencil-shaped entrance signs remained in place through years of neglect, and were rehabilitated along with the rest of the station. Details on the arched bridge, as well as the brick viaduct between 3rd and 4th Avenues, also reflect Art Deco design elements.
If you’re not familiar with this area of Brooklyn, it may be a bit hard to believe, but the IND at this point quickly dives back underground, where it stays until it connects with the older Culver Line at Ditmas Avenue. The reason is geography: the land slopes sharply upward here (the Slope in Park Slope).
Why elevate two stations in the first place? It was considered more architecturally sound to elevate the subway over the then-busy Gowanus Canal rather than tunnel under it. As a product of that construction, the Smith-9th St. station is the highest elevated station in NYC, rising more than 87 feet above the street. It takes two escalators to get up and down.
Heading in, 4th Avenue reflects the overall IND design formula: off-white glazed brick tiling with simple color tile informational and directional signage. A little-known IND design element held that all IND stations between express stations were tiled the same color, with the color changing at an express station. This rule holds true even here on this elevated stretch, as the Bergen, Carroll, Smith-9th, and Fourth Avenue stations are all tiled in light green. The color changes to yellow at the “express” center-platformed 7th Avenue station, with following stations all tiled yellow until the “express” Church Avenue station, which is maroon.
I’ve placed “express” in quotation marks because the F and G lines, which run here, feature no express service and haven’t, with the exception of local platforms being closed for trackwork, for decades. Recently, the express tracks on the Culver Viaduct, to which this line connects, were in use while the Metropolitan Transit Authority rehabbed several stations.
Prior to the subway unification in 1940, there were free transfers between the IND and IRT/BMT, but they were doled out sparingly. The 4th Avenue Line, Brooklyn’s first subway, opened in 1915 and connected to the Manhattan Bridge, but ran to the Chambers Street station. The tracks were only later connected to the Broadway BMT.
The presence of a “Coney Island” tile sign, pointing to the southbound platform, at the 4th Avenue IND is a puzzlement. In 1933, when the station was built, the end of the line was at Church Avenue, and the line was only connected to the Culver Viaduct on McDonald Avenue in 1954. It’s possible that the city planned to build out this line to Coney Island from the jump, and created the signs in anticipation.
Subway historian Joe Brennan, in Comments:
A major purpose of the IND was to make company-owned elevated railways obsolete– consider Eighth Avenue, Sixth Avenue, Fulton Street, and planned routes like Second Avenue.
The “Coney Island” sign turned out to be very premature, but the IND plan from the start was to continue this route onto the “Culver” elevated over McDonald Avenue to Coney Island. The subway contracts had a provision to let the city “recapture” portions of route from the operating companies. Before 1940 the BMT company was operating the city-owned McDonald Avenue route from its company-owned old (1880s) Fifth Avenue El. The plan was to close that down and route the new subway onto the McDonald Avenue line instead. I do wonder where the Coney Island terminal was going to be, if the city had not bought out the entire BMT system.
The “B.M.T. subway” sign was not about a free transfer. If you changed trains there you paid another nickel. I think this passageway was one of the many free transfers created in 1948.
In the 1970s, the MTA hired a design firm called Unimark, and chief designer Massimo Vignelli, to standardize subway signage. After different colors and fonts were used for several years, black signs with white trim and Helvetica type were settled upon, and the MTA has been quite thorough, especially in the last 30 years, in rooting out earlier signage and sign designs, with many beautiful enamel signs in a variety of fonts and colors eliminated. In the IND, in many cases the MTA has left the simply-worded tile signs in place, but placed somewhat redundant modern signs next to them.
The northbound platform of the station has gotten, thus far, the deluxe treatment with the rehabbed panels. The windows are now glazed polyurethane and aren’t opaque, though they do allow sun rays to streak onto the platform. Combined with the metal “ribs” of the superstructure, the effect is unique in the entire subway system.
At sunset, the colors are diffused into works of art.
It has to be emphasized that the “panorama” only exists on a short stretch of the northbound platform. The rest of it is a brick wall with filled-in windows, which were also originally glass but the city decided to simply cover them over rather than constantly replace the glass after angry vandals continued to break them.
The Statue of Liberty can be clearly glimpsed from the west end of the platform, and through subway windows as it makes the curve on the viaduct west of the Smith-9th Street station. If you use a zoom lens you can obtain a good photo of the station through the ribs of the viaduct that spans 3rd Avenue.
The Fourth Avenue station is one of the subways’ unremarked-upon masterpieces. However, the city does not apparently have the money or the inclination to complete its excellent rehabilitation work to include the southbound set of picture windows over 4th Avenue, and that’s shame.
