tell me something nuclear winter ghoap NOW!! (bo)
BO!!!!! ok you wanna read what i've got so far?? it's not very much but here's what i have for my project that's tentatively titled "permafrost"
At first, it comes as a series of lights in the distance, a gentle rain like a cascade of falling stars. And then, it goes dark.
It happens over the course of several hours. By the time the dust settles—and it never settles, never really settles, always hangs in the air and renders it unbreathable, unlivable—and the sirens quiet and the last few screams die off, there’s hardly anything left. Hardly anything left living.
The initial blast doesn’t reach up the country and, for that, Johnny lasts the months after the first nuclear bombs are dropped. Somedays, he can barely recollect the hours after the initial impact; they come back in foggy chunks, stumbling out of his house, boots crunching over the glass that had been blown clean out of the windows, covering his eyes against the flash of light and staring out into the distance at the mushrooming cloud of smoke just cresting the horizon. The bottom falling out of him at the sight.
More bombs hit other parts of the continent, several in Russia, throughout Asia and down into Africa, and across the pond as well. The world goes up in flames in an hour. In his cabin up in the Scottish Highlands, crutches jammed under his arms in his haste to limp his way outside, he sees the blast and then hears it a minute or so later. A roar rippling through the air.
It shatters the world.
In the present day, the boat sways where it’s roped to the wharf, the waters choppy. Johnny sits on the deck in a foldout chair, fastening a new head onto his ax, fixing the metal wedge over the eye to hold it in place. The blade is cleaner than the one that’d just cracked, sharp from being run over the whetstone. He pulls his scarf back over his nose when it slips down his face.
His cabin in the Highlands hadn’t been a viable choice for longer than a few months, not after the cold had finally begun to set in. Too far up north. He’d made his way down south over the course of weeks, bringing with him only as much as he could carry. A bittersweet goodbye to the summer home of his youth, a hand laid flat against the door before turning on his heel and starting the long trek south.
It’s not any warmer farther down south, particularly around the coast where the wind gets bitterly cold, sinking into the bone. He’d found the boat on a whim, the only structure still relatively intact and, most importantly, isolated.
Making his home on an old boat might not win him any awards for brightest idea, but the downside to traveling further into the country, away from the untenable glacial weather up north, is that it coincides with the areas where the bombs were dropped, leaving limited options for shelter.
Months pass. Years pass.
His ankle healed funny all those years ago from prolonged bouts of starvation before desperation kicked in and from traveling miles on foot. He’d driven a portion of the way down north until the roads had outlived their usefulness—asphalt cracked, chunks of bedrock spiking up out of the ground. The rest he’d managed with his crutches and a single backpack, leaving the car to rot some three hundred or so miles up the country.
It's some strange occurrence, Johnny thinks at age thirty-something (he’s lost count), that his lot be murky, for death to miscount. He witnesses an apocalypse and comes out the other side. Happenstance. Coincidence, that he’s discharged from the military not a month before the first bomb hits London and leaves a crater that never fills, that never heals. A pockmark in the earth.
His lips twist bitterly. The price of a long life is a barbed and slick soul.
Immortality sometimes occurs to him, or godship, but neither option rests well with him and Johnny wonders if this is how gods are born: not of sea foam but of inevitability, of miscalculation, of death's err, of smallness, of acorns he carried as a child through pastures behind his summer house.
He sniffs. Cuts that memory off at the quick.
Johnny gives himself a couple more minutes to fiddle around with the ax before looping it into the gear loops on his backpack and buckling it in.
[MISSING STUFF HERE]
Much of the city has returned to nature, rubble encased in snow and ice; the stores have long been looted or reduced to ash from the blast.

On October 15th 1902 Edinburgh's Balmoral Hotel opened its doors for the first time.
Look out for my own connections to this grand old hotel, both in a personal sense and through my home town of Loanhead.
Back then it was called The North British and in Edinburgh a lot of people, myself included, still refer to it by the initials NB.
On Wednesday 15 October, 1902, on the front page of The Scotsman newspaper, a small advert appeared: “North British Station Hotel. This hotel in direct communication with Waverley Station is now open F.T. Burcher, hotel manager.”
According to the hotel’s official history, the North British was “a vanguard for the railway company which built it, a surrogate for the grand station they had never been permitted to erect in the sensitive site between Old and New Town.” The architecture, executed in golden sandstone, features towers and balconies galore. It’s a glorious mash-up of influences from across northern Europe. Expensive to build as well as to run – it gobbled upwards of 200 tons of coal every month – the hotel was seen as a “sign of the future heralded by the railways, the newly opened Forth Bridge and the electric lights switched on in Princes Street just seven years earlier”.
Nevertheless, some believed the Caledonian, which opened a year later, boasted the more advantageous location. And some detractors found the sheer size of the hotel gauche, complaining “it is coarse and obstructive at once”.
The hotel – working name “Waverley Station Hotel” – was the brainchild of George Wieland, a former NBR company secretary who retired to its board in 1890. Having toured some of the most lavish hotels in the world – where he realised the importance of having a banqueting hall to bring in business – he hired W Hamilton Beattie to draw up plans for Edinburgh. The hotel would have 300 bedrooms, 52 bathrooms, and 70 lavatories, and was designed to encourage the circulation of fresh air. Lifts shot people straight from the station into the hotel’s foyer, and beyond that, to rooms furnished with mahogany, leather and crimson moquette. It’s said that the bill for plants and flowers exceeded the bill for gas, and there was even a special machine to burnish the silver. Weiland made sure the new hotel’s cellars were full of the finest champagnes, hocks, ports, and whisky, the better to entice his ideal customers – wealthy, landed families moving between their multiple residences.
In 1922, the hotel became part of the London and North Eastern Railway Company and by all accounts the hotel sparkled from top to bottom, but after the Second World War, when the railways were nationalised, and Prestwick airport began getting transatlantic traffic, things began a slow downward trajectory. Even so, the hotel remained the destination for Edinburgh society events, be they corporate or personal. In 1983, British Rail sold off its rather faded North British Hotel. In 1988, it closed for refurbishment, it was in dire need of this, some of the rooms were looking a wee bit shabby, the wooden window frames unable to open fully, and how do I know this? Well I used to be the window cleaner in the hotel and the windows that didn't open meant I had to find one close by and edge along the crumbling sandstone ledges, the worst affected, and highest were on the south of the hotel and there was a six storey drop down to the train station below.
At the start of the 1990s, Balmoral International Hotels, an Edinburgh based company, bought the venue. In 1997, the Balmoral became the first hotel bought by Sir Rocco Forte as he assembled his portfolio of hotels. It currently boasts Scotland’s only Bollinger Bar, as well as the Michelin-starred Number One restaurant run by executive chef Jeff Bland, a spa, and ten function rooms accommodating up to 450 people.
Famous guests over the years have included Elizabeth Taylor, Michael Palin, Beyoncé and JK Rowling, who finished the last Harry Potter novel here, on 11 January, 2007, and then daubed her signature on a bust in her room.
A second wee link with the hotel, is Charles Forte, Grandfather of the present owner began his working life in my home town of Loanhead when he moved to Scotland from Italy.

Abdi Ali
Gary Hopkins hacked Abdi Ali, 17, to death at the north London home he shared with Stacy Docherty and their three children in December 2017. Hopkins, 38, was convicted of murder and sentenced at the Old Bailey to life with a minimum term of 22 years. He had denied murder, blaming another drug dealer for Abdi's death. His partner Docherty was cleared of murder and manslaughter but jailed for two years and three months after pleading guilty to perverting the course of justice by helping Hopkins hide the body.
The court had previously heard Abdi was a drug dealer who would sometimes use Hopkins' flat to do business. Jurors heard window cleaner Hopkins "lost it", hitting Abdi over the head with a claw hammer and repeatedly stabbing him with a knife. Hopkins - who the court heard along with Docherty was addicted to crack cocaine and heroin - then bundled the body inside a duvet cover, stashing it and the murder weapons in the loft at his home.
Abdi's body was infested with insects by the time police found him eight months later. The killing only came to light when Hopkins boasted to one of his friends of murdering Abdi, before taking them to the loft to see for themselves.
Hopkins had pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice and preventing a lawful burial.

"Schreiber House", Hampstead, London [1964] _ Architect: James Gowan.
Photos: Spyros Kaprinis _ 06.12.2020
"Four-storey house in Hampstead, designed for Chaim Schreiber, leading British furniture manufacturer of the 1960s The house is planned over four floors, service rooms in the basement, living rooms on the ground floor, main suite on the first and children’s bedrooms and studio on the second floor. Each floor is arranged as an open suite but a double door can be pivoted to allow for individual privacy. To get the view of Hampstead Heath, the rooms extend the full depth of the house and the cross section is stepped to form a clerestory at roof level.
The planning module is expressed externally by narrow vertical brick and window panels and internally by in-situ plaster wall panels, ceiling and floor units and doors. Schreiber had special built-in furniture and room dividers made, using his factory machinery, but designed by Gowan. The building was equipped with high-tech devices of the day, such as blown warm-air heating and a built-in vacuum cleaner system. Moulded ply storage units were individually designed as well as all furniture, carpets and curtains. These were all based on the planning module."
https://www.ajbuildingslibrary.co.uk/projects/display/id/2026
"The site is elevated nine metres above the perimeter road and looks out to Hampstead Heath on the north side. The client wanted a spacious and well-equipped house for a family of five.
The house is planned horizontally, the basement being service and garage with entrance at street level, the living rooms on the ground floor, the master suite on the first floor, and bedrooms and studio on the second floor. Rooms characteristically extend from front to back, thus receiving sunlight from the south and having views out to the Heath on the north side. The elevation of the house gives the impression from the inside that the garden carries through into the Heath without a break.
The piers are 18-inch cavity blue rustic Staffordshire engineering bricks. Cross walls are 11-inch cavity, and internal walls nine inch solid. Floors are 18 by nine-inch-deep pre-cast concrete units. A basic three-foot square grid was used for setting out."

Who has ownership of space?
You’ll quickly realise that although UCL is big and seems open, there’s a rabbit warren of spaces you can’t squeeze through and you are (even as a graduate student) just the visitor here, your hunch is confirmed as you walk up to a door only to find it shut, a black box to your left, flashes red – you can’t enter. A girl almost half your size it seems, with brunette hair, baggy jeans and an ominously sized tote bag, fearlessly walks up to the door and scans her card; it flashes green and four beeps in a major key signal that she can go through. She walks in with the confidence of a queen who knows this is her land; you’re left outside to press the ‘call’ button and wait for the sympathetic receptionist to ask your name and let you in.
There are inhabitants of a building and there are visitors, but the boundaries between them are not clear; for example, at UCL, the student reside on campus daily, their cards give them access to the majority of the buildings (degree depending) and this is an institution which, at least in theory, is designed for them and their development, so they are inhabitants, right? But if I tell you, the student’s leave after a number of years, they have a fluid ownership limited by time and the educators on the other hand – are here to stay. What then?
Though lecturers are more likely to stick to one building, they are able to penetrate the core of the space, they have offices; they are a permanent fixture, so is this theirs? Then of course you complicate matter further, you have the library staff, the cleaners, those who work in the campus cafés and bars and that binary of inhabitant/visitor no longer seems an adequate way to categorise the social life of a building, you understand that there is a larger social network at play, one that shifts with space and time and where you can assume a number of different roles.
“Well, this is the Slade.
You think you’re coming in?”
At the Slade, you are brutally reminded that this is not your territory. A woman, in her late 50’s, stack of books cradled in one arm turns to you as you try to walk in and scathes, “Well, this is the Slade. You think you’re coming in?”
The Slade has prestige; it considers itself an elitist institution that only loosely sits underneath the umbrella of ‘University College London’. It is a space of tension because in essence it is a private space within a public university. Though we like to think there is a democracy to our education and student status, the Slade requires a membership that you don’t have. The building is understated, sitting on the left flank of the Main Quad, there is no attention-grabbing sign that says ‘here, look at me, I’m the Slade’ no, this is a building that doesn’t want to be disturbed and walking through the silent, high-ceilinged corridors you’d think the same of the students and staff who use it. Amongst the stretch canvas and empty rooms and is that a secret elevator? you get lost, you are not wanted here, you don’t belong.
The Slade is a stark contrast to the Bartlett, a new-built cube that has a weightless feel due to its façade punctuated by large rectangular glass windows, through which you can see models and papers, the life of the architect visible to you from the street level. It invites you in to see more. The door though small, and arguably hidden beneath the cantilever, is flooded with students and staff running in and out, a group of four stand just off to the right, cigarettes in hand, conjecturing with the other, deep in some discussion about their next crit, you’re sure. Your entrance is not an event to them, you are free to enter and explore the ground floor exhibition space.
Similar to the Slade, the Bartlett does require membership. Beyond the initial ground floor space you will find a barrier that requires key card entry but this is set back from the entrance. The inhabitants of the building can go deeper but as the visitor you are encouraged to come in into the foreground of the building and join the social network.
Private spaces have boundaries, they are excluding, this may have negative connotations, but requiring membership to a building can be useful. It creates a social space where inhabitants are intrinsically connected before meeting - the supporting social structure is pre-fabricated though it’s walls and doors are free to transform.
Membership defines more directly the inhabitants and visitors of a building (though there are still levels to ones inhabitation) and gives structure to the social meaning of space. Knowing you have ownership of a private space changes your behaviour, as with the student who swans into the student centre, the artist who tell you this is the Slade, or the architect who smokes on his doorstep. As a visitor you may feel like an outsider or an invited guest but you assume a different social identity to the inhabitants. Even on your journey through UCL’s buildings your value in the social network shifts, you move from one building where you have deep entry, to a democratic space with where ownership is dissolved amongst its current users; to another building where you reach an impasse and cannot join the social structure. The dualistic framework of inhabitant-visitor isn’t sufficient to describe the social life of a building, it cannot help us answer who has ownership.
The social network of its users defines ownership. It’s a fractal network, held equally between the minds of those who encounter it and the physicality of the building itself. You take a left out of the North Cloisters onto the rear corner or the Main Quad, someone catches your eye and you watch them disappear behind a wall and wonder where they went to; and if you’d be allowed in.

The Less Anxiety, Less Mess, Smarter Way To Repaint An Area
Reviewing the very best means to repaint an area may be simpler with a full palette of suggestions from the professionals:

Satin enamel has a silky cozy, pearllike coating, while semigloss is streamlined, glowing as well as scrubbable.

Using a putty blade, use a thin layer of patching material to any broken or dented location, feathering the patching material one to two inches far from the fixed area to mix the surface evenly. Allow to completely dry. Sand ended up location with 220-grit sandpaper, blending the patched area evenly with the surface area. Scuff sand shiny surface areas.
Application.
Once you get the paint residence, mix it thoroughly. Make use of a top quality, nylon/polyester brush. Dip a third of the bristle length right into the paint. Get rid of the excess paint from the brush by tapping the bristles against the within the paint can. Apply repaint to the perimeter sides of the project area with a brush prior to rolling. Begin at the top and clean the paint from the nonpainted location to the previously applied areas. Refill the brush as required to maintain a damp side, roughly every five inches. Once the border of the wall is done, pour the paint right into a paint tray or a five-gallon container. Dip the roller cover entirely into the paint, covering the whole roller cover area. Remove excess paint by rolling onto the ribbed section of the paint tray or container grid. Beginning in an upper corner of the wall surface, place the crammed roller cover roughly 3 to 4 inches away from the repainted boundary. Working in a three-by-three-foot area, roll a “W” onto the wall surface. Roll back into the previously used paint to maintain an uniform finish. Continue the “W” strategy three to four inches far from the last area applied. Work from the top down, until the wall surface is entirely covered.
Cleanup.
Get rid of all tape and coverings. Take ground cloth out of the completed area and get rid of dust and debris. Reattach switch plates as well as electrical outlet covers and any kind of hardware that was removed. Vacuum cleaner the flooring, re-hang pictures and also mirrors and also placed furniture as well as decorative devices back where they belong. Clean brushes, rollers and pans in cozy, soapy water. Work the cleaning service throughout the brush bristles or roller cover, rinse two times in tidy water. Permit to completely dry.
Kick back and enjoy your beautifully repainted space.

Power Rangers Zeo (Heather Ray).
The other night I sat with my family members around the table reminiscing and also telling old stories. On October 15th 1902 Edinburgh’s Balmoral Hotel opened its doors for the first time.
Look out for my own connections to this grand old hotel, both in a personal sense and through my home town of Loanhead.
Back then it was called The North British and in Edinburgh a lot of people, myself included, still refer to it by the initials NB.
On Wednesday 15th October, 1902, on the front page of The Scotsman newspaper, a small advert appeared: “North British Station Hotel.
Well I used to be the window cleaner in the hotel and the windows that didn’t open meant I had to find one close by and edge along the crumbling sandstone ledges, the worst affected, and highest were on the south of the hotel and there was a six storey drop down to the train station below.
At the start of the 1990s, Balmoral International Hotels, an Edinburgh based company, bought the venue. In 1997, the Balmoral became the first hotel bought by Sir Rocco Forte as he assembled his portfolio of hotels. It currently boasts Scotland’s only Bollinger Bar, as well as the Michelin-starred Number One restaurant run by executive chef Jeff Bland, a spa, and ten function rooms accommodating up to 450 scot.

Calling on your favorite cleaning service to help you with the party mess afterward makes a whole lot of sense.
Carpet Cleaning
Look for a commercial or residential cleaning service that has state-of-the-art equipment for maximum results. Some firms also offer tick and flea treatments, fabric protection, stain and odor removal, and even upholstery cleaning.

The Tougher Things in Life Pressure washing interior and exterior surfaces of your building is called for to tackle the really tough jobs encountered in any work or home environment. Home siding immediately comes to mind, but think about garage floor stains or ground in deck soil, or even the green mold that has collected on your walkways. Construction Cleaning up after you have had construction work done in a building is not the most welcome chore. But it has to be done and it has to be done correctly. You'll need a reputable service now more than ever to tackle things like trash removal and overall deep cleaning to get the place looking and feeling respectable again.
In general, here are some pointers to expedite your search for the right service: Are all the employees fully insured, licensed and bonded? Do they use sub-contractors or do they have their own trained crews? Have they given you references? What kind of equipment do they have? Are they a major chain or a smaller, family owned enterprise who can deliver more personalized services? Now it's time to sit back and enjoy! Your business (or your home) has been cleaned to your specifications. Your space has just been scrubbed by a professional team you have personally screened and who you can trust. You have completed the research and now it's time to invite your guests, your clients, or the people who matter most in your life - to come on over for a visit, have a seat, and celebrate the shine.

On October 15th 1902 Edinburgh's Balmoral Hotel opened its doors for the first time.
Famous guests over the years have included Elizabeth Taylor, Michael Palin, Beyoncé and JK Rowling, who finished the last Harry Potter novel here, on 11th January, 2007, and then daubed her signature on a bust in her room. A second wee link for me with the hotel, is Charles Forte, Grandfather of the present owner began his working life in my home town of Loanhead when he moved to Scotland from Italy.
The first pic shows the hotel under construction as seen from Calton Hill, around 1900. the Clock Tower taking shape.
