HELLO ROCK N ROLL KITTY! (Vol.2): MAZZY STAR & HOPE SANDOVAL [Update August, 2022: This is a post I originally put on Tumblr in 2016. I'm re-posting it again today, six years later, Aug. 21. 2022 (updated to include some newer info) because it disappeared from my Tumblr account along with all my other previous content I'd posted to Tummblr. In the last few days, I logged into my Twitter account for the first time in years and discovered Twitter must have wiped it clean of content, followers and following. It looked like a brand new account showing no activity, no content, no nuthin'. Did Tumblr do this 'cause I was inactive for so long? Hm. At least the account was allowed to exist, even if it had been reduced to nothingness! I had visited others' Tumblr pages occasionally but had not logged into my own for a very long time. I became active instead at fan groups on Facebook and elsewwhere and on my own you tube channel] ..................................................................................... This is a post on on Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval & David Roback as a cat appreciators. (Vol. 1 focuses on Dum Dum Girls’ Dee Dee Penny (now known as Kristin Kontrol) as a cat person). Mazzy Star’s / Hope Sandoval’s “totem animal” seems to be the cat as there are at least nine examples of cat image themes appearing in album art, merch, & music videos. Hope also meows her way, cat like, through a song, her guest duet on JAMC’s song “Perfume,” (a song whose lyrics only make sense when one knows the history of Chanel No. 5 perfume, & how the company became more responsible by ceasing to use in the making of its perfume musk taken from musk glands of the endangered wild civet cat). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pMPb6ifZ5c . Plus, Hope’s been known to send letters on stationery with cat images printed on the paper, & sometimes signs autographs accompanied by cat cartoons she draws.
The photos are:

2) Cat imagery album artwork from Mazzy Star’s 1990 album, “She Hangs Brightly”, in yellow and black
3) Mazzy Star red and black tee shirt official merch design with cat image theme.
4) Mazzy Star black and white tote bag official merch design with cat theme.
5) & 6): Front and inside covers of Mazzy Star’s 2013 album, “Seasons of Your Day” with cat themes. [The album’s credits say: “Artwork: Mazzy Star, Barry Bodeker”]
7) Hope’s autograph accompanied by a cat cartoon she drew for a fan, Juan, after Mazzy Star’s Wiltern Theatre, L.A. gig, Nov. 7, 2013.
8) & 9): Two Black and white Screen capture pics of two cats with different colourings that appear in Mazzy Star’s official video for the song “I’m Less Here,” released April, 2014. The cat on the left roams around in the video. The one on the right David is shown petting. The video’s on yt here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmQhNp5rr3Q The cat on the left roaming is Hope's own cat Herman, I believe who she's named in an interview. In the video, the colours of the cat on the left have been reversed like in an old photo negative.
10) Screen capture (orange toned) from the official video for the single”Isn’t It True,” by Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions, released April, 2016. It shows silhouettes of hands reaching out to two cats.
11) Black & white screen capture, close up of a cat’s face from a mysterious video from Hope’s tendriltales.com site, 2016, a video which also has some shots of Hope. There's good reason to believe the cat is Hope's cat Herman she has mentioned by name in an interview. In the video, the colours of the cat have been reversed like an old photo negative
12) Official post from Mazzy Star’s official Facebook page, Aug. 2016 re. the then forthcoming single “Let Me Get There,” by Hope Sandoval and The Warm Inventions with a cat them in its message which I’m going to guess Hope likely wrote.
13) Happy Halloween! At long last, a pic turns up of Hope with a cat! This pic was posted by Mazzy Star to their own official Facebook page, Oct. 31, 2016. Meow-wow. It must be Hope holding her cat Herman.
14) A picture of my own two cats as Mazzy Star cats (R.I.P. "Coco", the black one. The other, "Monkey" is still with me)
-References to Hope’s own cats, or cats she knows have appeared in a few articles over the years, most amusingly in a Sept., 2013 SPIN mag interview where she & Colm O’Ciosoig speak jokingly about a cat “Herman” but without letting on to the leg-pulled interviewer “Herman” is a cat, not a person! http://www.spin.com/articles/mazzy-star-seasons-of-your-day-interview/
A helpful SPIN reader in comments ID-ed the mysterious “Herman” as a cat, which fits with what Hope & Colm say about him. I see the current posting of the article no longer has any comments attached. So, I’ll leave a new one there with the “Herman” info restored that someone else originally supplied.
-Hope mentions cats in lyrics in at least one of her own songs, “Suzanne,” by Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions. The lyrics line is: “The cats in here are overflowin’ “
- There’s a 50 min. audio interview from 2013 with Hope & David I’ve upped to yt here: http://youtu.be/TJaFHGAEFiE with a section (starting at the 30:16 mark) where they talk about cats, & it’s evident from it both are cat appreciators. At one point in the interview Hope says “I wish I could see a cat right now.”
-There’s a Rome radio interview & performance by David from 1988 (when Hope-era Opal was touring Europe) where he sings a song with amusingly odd sounding cat lyrics: “Sad and insane, Cat’s in the rain.” (Huh, David?). I’ve upped it to yt here: http://youtu.be/NL5mzjwyWNc It turns out it’s an Opal song called “A Falling Star” originally from the Opal era when Kendra Smith was still singer, but with new lyrics. Hope sang the new version with cat lyrics on the 1988 Opal tour after she became Opal’s singer.
-Here’s a passage from an Oct., 1996 Alternative Press article: QUOTE: “We pile into William’s [William Reid of JAMC, Hope’s bf of the time] compact car. He drives us to his and Hope’s place so she can get her notebook of lyrics [before they go to the studio for a Mazzy Star rehearsal for an upcoming tour]. At the house, David goes to the back garden to pet William’s cat. He speaks of his love of animals, nature and the beauty of Cambridge (where Syd Barrett lives, he notes).“
-In an October, 1993 Melody Maker interview, David recalls first encountering Hope at 1980s L.A. rock shows as “Just a set of eyes, like a cat” !
-Cat passage from 2002, Jan. 3 Rolling Stone Hope article/interview: “Hope sits at home in Berkeley while her cat meows over the phone even louder than she is able to speak.”
-Cat passages from 2002, August, L.A. Press Telegram Hope article/interview: “It becomes apparent that Mazzy Star lead singer Hope Sandoval is definitely a cat person when a faint mewing comes throughthe phone during an interview from her Bay Area home…But like the territorial half-Siamese cat making its presence known during this conversation, Sandoval has always set public and private boundaries in her career…”
-My own main youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/Bobjb999 has a large collection of Mazzy Star, Hope Sandoval, & related recordings, mostly live, including many unreleased rarities, mostly audio with slideshows, although I have a few fine videos. Most of those slideshows have one or more cat pics sneaked in. It’s a small side distraction, but as a cat-person-Mazzy-fan I enjoy playing up the Mazzy Star cat connection a little! I also have a secondary yt channel with more Mazzy rarities, here: https://www.youtube.com/user/Bobb99999999 .................................... [LATER UPDATES, Aug. 2020: Here's an excerpt from an interview with Hope and Colm (of The Warm Inventions) from The L.A. Record, Jan. 2017 https://issuu.com/larecord/docs/la_record_126_web
INTERVIEWER: Hope, do you have any hobbies besides making music? Do you collect anything? Records? Instruments? HOPE: Well, obviously I buy instruments—but no. I wish I could have a cat collection. That’s my fantasy. I’d be the crazy lady on the block with all the cats. I only allow myself one cat but I fantasize about having loads.
INTERVIEWER: It’s really disciplined to only have one cat.
HOPE: I know! And I can barely handle the one cat. I didn’t tell you, Colm [Colm is on the phone with them in a three-way phone interview] but he didn’t come home until three in the morning. I couldn’t sleep all night and finally I heard his little door and I went to open the little door and he walks in and he’s limping. He is ok. He’s sleeping now and I’m just debating whether I should take him to the vet. He’s one of those cats who is just a fighter. He thinks he’s in charge of the whole neighborhood so he’s constantly getting into fights and this will be, like, the fifth time I’ve taken him to the vet and at this point they’ll probably call child services on me. It’s just strange. He’s a fighter.
INTERVIEWER: f you did have a collection, you would be at the vet nearly every other day.
HOPE: Can you imagine the expense of having ten cats? .................................................... Here's a 2018 quote from Hope where Hope mentions her cat Herman. It's in a quote re. her 2018 collab with Mercury Rev from a tribute album celebrating singer Bobbie Gentry, The Delta Sweete Revisited, an album of new cover versions of the songs on Bobbie's 1968 album. Hope sings on one song "Big Boss Man" https://bellaunion.com/2018/12/mercury-rev-and-hope-sandoval-share-big-boss-man/ QUOTE: “Well, the only boss man in my life is my cat Herman so this song was a bit tricky for me but I am so honoured to have been asked to be a part of this amazing group of women paying tribute to such an inspirational artist. I’ve always been a fan of Mercury Rev and Bobbie Gentry, so needless to say I am over the moon to be a part of this project.” (-Hope, 2018)
............................................
The idea of doing a HELLO ROCK N ROLL KITTY! series was inspired by a popular post I saw & enjoyed at the Dangerous Minds site of photos of rock stars with their cats & dogs: http://dangerousminds.net/comments/rock_stars_with_their_cats_and_dogs
[Full disclosure: My yt & mazzystar.free.fr handle “Hermesacat,” is homage to a fave cat of my own named “Hermes” (now deceased). Resemblance of the name to the cat Hope & Colm cite, apparently named Herman according to a 2013 SPIN interview, is but an amusing coincidence. Hermesacat” was my site name for years at (sadly now defunct) fan site Mazzy Star Boulevard. Btw, there are current worthy fan sites here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/6071129794/ (I'm an admin at the FB group); and here: http://mazzystar.free.fr ;

Happy Anniversary "Meteora"!❤😍(March 25th, 2003)
Meteora is the second studio album by American rock band Linkin Park. It was released on March 25, 2003 through Warner Bros. Records. The album was produced by the band alongside Don Gilmore. The title Meteora is taken from the Greek Orthodox monasteries sharing the same name.
Meteora has a similar sound to Hybrid Theory, as described by critics, and the album took almost a year to be recorded. The main artwork was assembled by the band with help of various other graphic artists. Linkin Park released singles from Meteora for over a year, including "Somewhere I Belong", "Faint", "Numb", "From the Inside", and "Breaking the Habit". The song "Lying from You" was released as a promotional single.
Meteora is the most successful album in the history of the Alternative Songs chart. As of 2013, the album has sold over 27 million copies worldwide, and is certified seven times platinum by the RIAA. Meteora was also ranked number 36 on Billboard's Top 200 Albums of the Decade. The song "Session" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. Some songs from the album were remixed with some of Jay-Z's songs for the EP Collision Course. It is the first Linkin Park studio album to feature Dave Farrell after he rejoined the band in 2000.
In 2000, Linkin Park worked with music producer Don Gilmore to record and release their debut album, Hybrid Theory. Initial writing for a second album dated back to early 2001, while still touring in support of Hybrid Theory. The band had written around eighty different demos during their Hybrid Theory World Tour and LP Underground Tour, within the span of just eight months. Rough song ideas written then would find its way to the final album; notably the intro for "Somewhere I Belong". Bennington recorded guitar notes for it, but found it too folk rock sounding. However, Shinoda and Joe Hahn reworked it, adding effects to it, and then played it backwards, molding it into something the band was happy with. As explained by Shinoda: "Since I reversed it, it was playing 4-3-2-1. The chord progression was reversed. Then I cut it into four pieces, and I played it 1-2-3-4. And that's why it has that sweeping sound."
In early 2002, after the touring, the writing continued in Mike's home studio, pre-production of the album began there. The band worked in pairs during the writing process, whereas Shinoda was always involved in all the songs. The recording of the songs mainly used Pro Tools, whereas the band used the traditional method of writing, in main studio. In June, pre-production terminated and the band headed for main production. The band finalized Don Gilmore as their producer. Rob Bourdon spent eight hours a day in the studio for the recording of the album. By August, the band entered NRG Studios as Bennington also began writing songs with the band.
Linkin Park had finished versions of many songs before the actual recording process had begun, but they majorly wrote the finalized songs included in the track list in the studio. By October the drums were finalized and guitar parts were introduced by Brad in the control room of the studio. By the end of October, the bass parts were introduced. Don Gilmore himself being a bass player helped Farrell in his recording. The sampling part by Hahn was introduced just a month before the deadline, thereby Mike finished the recording of "Breaking the Habit" with strings arrangement by David Campbell; the song had been worked on by Shinoda for five or six years. The vocal production started in November. The mixing process as well as the album itself was finished in New York City.
Lyrically the album contains elements including depressing emotions, anger, and recovery. Explaining to MTV, Bennington said: "We don't talk about situations, we talk about the emotions behind the situations. Mike and I are two different people, so we can't sing about the same things, but we both know about frustration and anger and loneliness and love and happiness, and we can relate on that level." In the same interview, Shinoda explained it as: "What we really wanted to do was just push ourselves and push each other to really find new ways to be creative." He continued: "We wanted each sample that was in each song to be something that might perk your ear – something that you might not have ever heard before."
In a promotional interview, Rob Bourdon stated: "We wanted a group of songs that would sit well together because we wanted to make a record that you could pop into your CD player and, from beginning to end, there would never be a spot where you start daydreaming."
In titling the album, Mike said that "Meteora was a word that caught my attention because it sounded huge." Dave, Joe, and Chester elaborated that just like how Meteora, the rock formations in Greece, is very epic, dramatic, and has great energy, the band wanted the album to have that same feeling.
Genre-wise, the album is categorized as nu metal, rap metal, rap rock, alternative metal, and alternative rock.
The promotion for the album began well ahead before its release, as pictures of the band recording were distributed to the media. To support the album, there were many photo shoots of the band on October 29, 2002 at the Ambassador Hotel, where the band took a break from recording the album for two days, for designing the cover art of the album. "The Flem" and "Delta" helped the band for the art works, for the album as well as for the singles spawned by it. A TV commercial for the album was premiered on January 1, 2003.
"Somewhere I Belong" was released as the first single, premiering on US radio on March 18, 2003. Being released only nine days before the album release, it influenced the album sales performance worldwide. The second single off the album was "Faint", released before the band started its world tour. The third single "Numb" was released when Linkin Park performed it live in Madrid. "From the Inside" was released as the fourth single off the album before the North American leg of the world tour. "Breaking the Habit" was released while the band was in Indonesia. The album was released with various limited edition content for promotional purposes.
The band promoted the album with their Meteora World Tour and various other supporting tours. The world tour was supported by Hoobastank, P.O.D. and Story of the Year. The band played shows at Pellissier Building and Wiltern Theatre on the day before the album release and on the release date. The shows were called "'Meteora' Release Show". The European leg was cancelled because Chester was having severe back and abdominal pains. As a result, half of the music video of "Numb" was shot in Los Angeles and the Czech Republic. The album was also promoted by the Projekt Revolution festival. A live album was released in support of the album titled Live in Texas. Linkin Park played various special shows worldwide, including "Reading Ireland", as well as performing during the Kerrang! Awards, "Livid", "X-103's Not So Silent Night", "The End's Deck The Hall Ball" and "KROQ Almost Acoustic X-Mas", in promotion of the album.
Meteora received generally positive reviews, although critics noted that the album's musical style was similar to its predecessor, Hybrid Theory (2000). The overall Metacritic score is 62. E! Online rated it A, and expected it to "shoot straight for the stars". Entertainment Weekly described it as "radio-friendly perfection". Dot Music described it as a "guaranteed source of ubiquitous radio hits" Rolling Stone said the band "squeezed the last remaining life out of this nearly extinct formula". Billboard Magazine described Meteora as "a ready-made crowdpleaser" The New Musical Express said it had "massive commercial appeal" but left the reviewer "underwhelmed"
AllMusic described the album as "nothing more and nothing less than a Hybrid Theory part 2.", but added that the band "has discipline and editing skills, keeping this record at a tight 36 minutes and 41 seconds, a move that makes it considerably more listenable than its peers... since they know where to focus their energy, something that many nu-metal bands simply do not." Sputnikmusic writer Damrod criticized the album as being too similar to Hybrid Theory, but praised the album's production quality and catchiness, stating "the songs just invade your brain".
Blender described it as "harder, denser, uglier", while Q described it as "less an artistic endeavor than an exercise in target marketing." Entertainment Weekly gave the album a B+, calling it a "thunderously hooky album that seamlessly blends the group's disparate sonic elements into radio-friendly perfection"
The song "Session" was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 2004.
In its first week, Meteora debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200. The album sold at least 810,000 copies its first week of release. As of June 2014, the album has sold 6.7 million copies in the US, and over 27 million copies worldwide. The album was ranked number 36 on Billboard's Hot 200 Albums of the Decade.

Deafheaven: Blackgaze Metal Pioneers Prod The Edges, Upgrade Touring // Pollstar
via Pollstar
Experimental heavy band Deafheaven, fresh off of a co-headlining tour with Baroness, has proven an act of its ilk can make its way on the road and do things its own way while continuing to grow, from a recent Grammy nomination to increasing ticket sales across the board.
“I think the greatest thing about moving up in size and rooms is the freedom to be more creative,” says Deafheaven frontman George Clarke, mentioning the band’s added production effects on its latest tours. “It’s always a dream of mine to make our show bigger and more entertaining.”
And grow they have. The band’s recent history includes an Aug. 18 date at Los Angeles’ Wiltern that moved 1,720 tickets and grossed $36,285 and a near-sellout July 24 at Brooklyn Steel that grossed $34,817. Deafheaven also enjoyed strong co-bill numbers at Chicago’s Riviera Theatre and Manhattan’s Terminal 5.
Deafheaven worked hard from the start, often touring for 10 months of the year and making its bones on the club circuit. The band has grown lots from its early days: In February, its members felt somewhat out of place at the Grammys, where Deafheaven’s 11-minute track “Honeycomb,” off 2018’s Ordinary Corrupt Human Love, was nominated for Best Metal Performance.
“They were young boys when I met them,” says manager Cathy Pellow of Sargent House with a laugh. Pellow met Deafheaven almost 10 years ago through another client of hers, Russian Circles, and took the group on its first major tour. The band’s 2013 album Sunbather received unexpected critical buzz, including Pitchfork’s coveted Best New Music designation, and set the bar for the black metal and shoegaze acts collectively known as “blackgaze.” Subsequently, Deafheaven’s touring exploded and the group graduated to headliner status.
“It’s been beautiful to watch them get big and support other up-and-coming bands,” Pellow says. “They really deserve everything they get. It’s such a proud thing for me to be at the Wiltern and say ‘Wow, these guys, when I met them….’ It’s unimaginable. They’re extremely grateful for it and don’t take it for granted.”
The band’s hard-to-define sound, which incorporates elements from serene shoegaze and post-rock to brutal, crushing metal featuring Clarke’s intense vocals, has meant careful planning when coming up with tour packages and determining festival slots.
“They’ve done dates with Slipknot, and opened for Lamb of God, but it didn’t always connect super well,” the band’s booking agent and close personal friend, Merrick Jarmulowicz at Ground Control Touring, says. “That was a learning process, just trying to figure out what the audience is down to go on the ride with us for. The strategy has been mostly to prod the edges of where we can take it.”
Photo by Per Ole Hagen / Redferns This year, those edges include a Bonnaroo slot, and niche events like August’s Psycho Las Vegas, which boasts a lineup for metal purists topped by Megadeth and Opeth as well as genre mainstays such as High On Fire and Full of Hell. Deafheaven will also play Austin’s multi-venue Levitation Festival, which has acts from freak-folk acoustic strummer Devendra Banhart to thrash band Power Trip. “We’ve been very fortunate to be invited to such a broad array of festivals,” Clarke says. “A lot of it is due to Merrick’s hard work, and hopefully just being an entertaining live band. We’re always kind of the odd man on festivals. I don’t know if that’s an advantage, but people keep inviting us and I think it’s fun to be part of different worlds.” Those worlds go beyond the underground metal scene, which wasn’t always receptive to the band, despite a seeming openness to outsiders. “They’re a very divisive band and they really took a lot of lumps getting to where they are now, taking a beating from the people who were probably their most natural fanbase,” Jarmulowicz says. “The people who want to just listen to the music and go to a show and be open-minded enough to be convinced, we’ve won a lot of them over because the live show is so good. It wasn’t natural and wasn’t embraced by everyone immediately.” Clarke says the band’s performances speak for themselves. “For me, every stage is a proving ground,” he explains. “It’s important, no matter who we’re playing with or whatever audience, to represent what we do in its purest and most honest way, and to be ourselves and to give the best set we can. That’s kind of our motto.” Touring with Baroness, another metal band albeit a more straightforward and melodic one, was one way to do that; Jarmulowicz and Pellow anticipate more creative packages. “It’s probably not the last time we do that kind of thing, whether it’s supporting or co-headlining, anything to raise the profile of the band, says Jarmulowicz, although Pellow notes Deafheaven likely won’t open for anyone. “They’re busy guys, they’ll probably do 150 shows this year or maybe more,” Jarmulowicz adds, mentioning the band will hit Asia this year after a Euro leg with Touche Amore. Even with a conservative average gross of $16,335, that means Deafheaven could easily surpass $2 million in that span. “We find ourselves in a very motivated time right now,” Clarke says. “I don’t see things slowing down. Both in touring and writing, we are going to stay busy. Hopefully it’s just onward and upward.”

"Tangerine" is from Glass Animals' latest album Dreamland. “The song is about seeing someone get lost in the unimportant things in the world…to the point where they lose what made them unique and incredible," Bayley says in a statement. Finally, the wife returns - and is soon pregnant again. Next, the "wife" drops "her" wedding ring out of the window and leaves the family, and Bayley is left driving the car with his surly, now-teenage son in the back seat. Then, they're driving in the car with a baby in the backseat, and the baby has Bayley's face. "I have always hated the idea of doing any sort of ‘acting’…however small or subtle the role. "I fell in love with it when he told me the idea, but I was petrified of having to act," he reveals. “I have to thank director David Wilson hugely for this one - we talked about that theme, and he came up with the beautiful, cyclical narrative for this video," Bayley says in a statement. Republic Records Glass Animals' new video for " Tangerine" stars band frontman Dave Bayley in a quadruple role: He plays a man, the man's wife, and their kid, both as a baby and as a teenager.

Elvis Costello reunites with The Imposters for Look Now, their first album in 10 years https://ift.tt/2LTkLdt
It’s been five long years since Elvis Costello last released a record (see: 2013’s Wise Up Ghost featuring The Roots), but it’s been even longer since he dropped an album with The Imposters (see: 2008’s Momofuku). Now, having been inspired by last year’s “Imperial Bedroom & Other Chambers Tour”, the legendary singer-songwriter is ready to deliver a proper follow-up with The Imposters.
Due out October 12th via Conchord, Look Now spans 12 tracks and features collaborations with Burt Bacharach and Carole King. “I knew if we could make an album with the scope of Imperial Bedroom and some of the beauty and emotion of Painted From Memory, we would really have something,” Costello says in a press release. It should be noted Painted… was a conjoined effort with Bacharach.
Granted, it’s quite awhile until the Season of the Witch, but to hold us over, Costello’s offered up two tracks: “Under Lime” and “Unwanted Number”. Stream both below and peep the full tracklist shortly after. Fans who grab the deluxe edition will get four extra tracks, so how about that? Pre-order the album here.
In May, Costello underwent surgery to remove a “small but very aggressive” tumor. As a result of the procedure, Costello canceled several summer tour dates in Europe. However, he plans to return to the road in time for the North American leg come November. Grab tickets here.

The Devil Makes Three Return with ‘Chains Are Broken’, Due Out August 24th via New West Records; Announces Chains Are Broken Tour Dates
youtube
The Devil Makes Three are set to return with Chains Are Broken on August 24th via New West Records. The 11-song set was produced by Ted Hutt (Gaslight Anthem, Flogging Molly) and recorded at Sonic Ranch Studios in El Paso, TX. Chains Are Broken is The Devil Makes Three’s first album of original material since 2013’s acclaimed I’m A Stranger Here, which debuted on the Billboard Top 200. The new album follows their acclaimed 2016 collection of covers, Redemption & Ruin, which heralded the groups second #1 bow on the Billboard Top Bluegrass Albums Chart. Instead of their traditional revolving cast of collaborators in the studio, The Devil Makes Three stuck to its signature power trio of Pete Bernhard, Lucia Turino, and Cooper McBean - with one addition. This time, they invited touring drummer Stefan Amidon to power the bulk of the percussion and his presence remains most amplified as the band seamlessly translated the spirit of their must see live show into a studio recording. The Devil Makes Three announced today the initial Chains Are Broken tour dates today. After a month long European run of performances, the band will launch their U.S. Tour in support of the album on October 24th in Flagstaff, AZ. Tickets for all U.S. shows are on sale now. Chains Are Broken will be available on compact disc, across digital retailers, standard black vinyl, as well as a limited edition cream & navy blue split colored vinyl LP available at Independent Retailers. Chains Are Broken is available for pre-order now via NEW WEST RECORDS.
For as much as The Devil Makes Three remain rooted in troubadour traditions of wandering folk, Delta blues, whiskey-soaked ragtime, and reckless rock ‘n’ roll, the band nods to the revolutionary unrest of author James Baldwin, the no-holds barred disillusionment of Ernest Hemingway, and Southern Gothic malaise of Flannery O’Connor. In that respect, Chains Are Broken resembles a dusty leather bound book of short stories from some bygone era. “I always want our songs to unfold like short stories,” affirms Bernhard. “You could think of them as chapters of a book. This was a much more personal album about what it takes to be a writer of any kind - and what you have to do to make your dream possible. It was really the headspace I was in. It might have something to do with getting older. You start reflecting on life and the people around you. I was doing that in these songs. That’s what makes the record more personal. I’m pulling from these things. Some of it is about drug addiction. Some of it is about the things you sacrifice. Some of it is about the detrimental things we do for inspiration. Nevertheless, they all have some sort of narrative.” Current Tour Dates: 2018 June 16--Eau Claire, WI--Blue Ox Music Festival 17--Chicago, IL--Taste of Randolph 30--Warren, VT--Friendly Gathering August 8--Denver, CO--Fox Theater September 10--Nottingham, UK--Rock City (Basement) 11--Glasgow, Scotland--Oran Mor 12--Manchester, UK--Deaf Institute 13--Birmingham, UK--Hare & Hounds 14--London, UK--Islington Assembly Hall 16--Leffinge, Belgium--Leffingeleuren Festival 17--Cologne, Germany--Luxor 18--Hamburg, Germany--Knust Tickets 19--Berlin, Germany--Columbia Theater 21--Zurich, Switzerland--Mascotte 22--Amsterdam, Netherlands--Melkweg 23--Groningen, Netherlands--De Oosterpoort October 24--Flagstaff, AZ--Orpheum Theater 25--San Diego, CA--House of Blues 26--San Luis Obispo, CA--Alex Madonna Expo Center 27--Oakland, CA--Fox Theater 28--Chico, CA--Senator Theatre 31--Eugene, OR--McDonald Theatre November 1--Sacramento, CA--Ace of Spades 2--Sacramento, CA--Ace of Spades 3--Los Angeles, CA--The Wiltern 4--Stateline, NV--Montbleu Resort Casino 7--Vancouver, BC--Commodore Ballroom 8--Seattle, WA--Showbox SoDO 9--Portland, OR--Crystal Ballroom 10--Portland, OR--Crystal Ballroom 11--Spokane, WA--Knitting Factory 14--Bozeman, MT--Rialto Theatre 15--Billings, MT--The Pub Station 16--Missoula, MT--The Wilma 17--Boise, ID--Knitting Factory

Q&A: Vancouver’s Belle Game Dazzles With Crush-Pop Record, ‘Fear/Nothing’
“Someone at a show asked me once if I like music. Of course I fucking like music. I’m a musician.” This is just one of the many terrible, terrible questions Belle Game frontwoman, Andrea Lo, has been asked.
Belle Game is a Vancouver, BC band comprising of Andrea Lo (vocals), Katrina Jones (keys, vocals), Alex Andrew (drums, rythm guitar) and Adam Nanji (lead guitar) who have created their own hazily crafted and immensely emotional brand of crush-pop since their debut album, Ritual Tradition Habit, in 2013.
Four years can be a long time in the music landscape, but Belle Game seized this lapse to experiment heavily with new sounds, layering dark, dreamy textures onto their signature sound. On September 8, Belle Game returned with a new record, Fear/Nothing. The 10 track album, as Lo puts it, is “a shift from a place of logical and tangible sounds to a feeling.” The raw emotion behind this change gives way to many of the ethereal landscapes found in Fear/Nothing. You can hear the power behind vibrato and reverb laden tracks like “Spirit,” where Lo’s piercing vocals and dreamy lyrics cut through the electronic haze with electrifying strength. Swirling, wavy, and droning synth along with heavy drum beats form the basis of much of this record.
Fear/Nothing echoes the nostalgic feelings of driving through the night in a car filled with dark and dreamy pop beats. It’s chilly and artful in a simplistic sense. The simplicity and randomness, almost an out-of-focus feeling, is what gives tracks like “Bring Me” a powerful punch, while towering vocal hooks make “Yuh” as catchy as it is powerful.
Lo sat down with Ones To Watch to talk new album Fear/Nothing, shifting their sound from logic to a feeling, current tour with Broken Social Scene, rowdy tour mishaps, and other questions you should never ask a band.
OTW: I first heard Belle Game when driving at night on a lonely road, and it fit in incredibly well. How much have you changed from those 2013 days of being played on local Canadian radio to now?
Belle Game: We always do a night drive with our album to test it! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve listened to albums while driving late at night.
We, as a group and individually, have shifted and changed and grown a lot since that time. As a result, our music has changed a lot, as well as our relationship and conversation with music and how we make it.
Oddly enough, the change is not with intention. But a huge thing I keep stressing about this album is that it’s really been a move from logic to more of a feeling. It’s interesting listening to our first album in retrospect. It was four years of our lives where we were writing throughout it, and in four years you can be really different people along the way. Looking back and seeing how we were engaging with music back then and how it was reflected in each track was interesting.
OTW: In Ritual Tradition Habit, there are a few upbeat-pop tracks like “Wait Up For You” and “In Secrets,” but Fear/Nothing is more laden with abstract, dark, and heavy synth beats. How much of your own personal experiences are embedded in these changes?
Belle Game: Our personal experiences are deeply embedded in that album. That four years was a huge time for change, experiences, and revelations, as life goes. When writing Ritual Tradition Habit, we were a much younger band. To be completely honest, we were still tinkering with our understanding of music and how we played. With Fear/Nothing, it was less of a conscious process. But it wasn’t driven as a feeling like “I feel sad,” but driven by a more subconscious thought process.
OTW: You’re touring with Broken Social Scene right now. How does it feel to go on tour with such quintessential Canadian band? Especially since (BSS front man) Kevin Drew produced your newest album.
Belle Game: Kevin Drew was a huge catalyst. Years ago we met Kevin Drew when we did a residency in the Banff Art Centre. Kevin was that huge help for us. When you’re in his presence you don’t have to do much to get something good, and he helped us stretching logic to feeling on this record.
Going on tour with Broken Social Scene is huge for us and really important. That band was a really big soundtrack for each and every one of us. It was our soundtrack for growing up and driving around in the dark. So it means lot more to us than just visibility.
OTW: Without going into detail, my friends and I had one of the craziest nights of our lives after one of your shows. Turning it around to you, what has been your rowdiest tour mishap?
Belle Game: It was in Edmonton. If you’re talking about making a mess of ourselves then that was definitely Edmonton. It was our very first tour ever opening for Hey Ocean! at The Starlite Room. We were playing our first album and we were just kids playing our first album. We played our show, had a great time, and went to the merch table. Our drummer at the time’s friend was in town and he paid for two hotel rooms for us that night. He heard some bad news and was just feeling like shit. And to cheer himself up, he just wanted us to drink with him.
First off, Belle Game aren’t big partiers. We like to drink coffee and watch Seinfeld and play board games on tour. So we’re back at the merch table and this tray comes to the merch table full of a drink called a handgrenade. What a bad sign. Anyhow, he brinks up this tray of drinks, and I know none of us should do this.
But, this guy just bought us these drinks. So we celebrate.
Maybe 2-3 minutes later, another round comes up. And we’re all so paralyzed by our innate politeness, and we know it’s a bad idea but we kept drinking them. After 2 or 3 I distinctly remember everything being fine and then everything hit us out of left field. Katrina and I were standing at the merch table and then had this moment of recognition where we looked into each other’s eyes and telepathically realized we were fucked. It was like being on a rocket shooting straight up and we completely crashed. I found myself, the one and only time in my life, being that girl on the bathroom floor by the toilet being so dizzy. Katrina was viciously defending me from this promoter trying to get into the bathroom. Above all, it was the winter in Edmonton and it was fucking freezing.
Luckily our bassist was really sober. Alex slept on the floor of the hotel, I unabashedly threw up halfway to the hotel. Thinking about that night makes my stomach turn just thinking about it.
OTW: Being on tour and doing press you probably get asked a lot of dumb crap. What are personally your least favorite questions to get asked?
Belle Game: Anything with little thought put into it. With interviews, it’s when they obviously haven’t really listened to your album or looked into the band. If we’re doing this album tour and someone asks you about an old album and nothing else. Or even something cliché like, “how do you write music?”
I much prefer questions that show intelligence, depth, and curiosity. Asking how we write music does none of that, and constantly having to repeat these answers is tolling. Id much rather getting into some deeper ideas and sharing the creator to listener experience which can really engage both sides.

NIN Challenge 2.0 Day 18
Day 18 - Favourite NIN Concert (4th May 2017)
Wiltern Theatre 2009 has to be my favourite NIN concert and one of the ones I would have liked to go to. Just pretty much everything was just about perfect The Setlist. The Guests. The Lineup. I just love it.
Another honourable mention has to go to Lollapalooza 2013 and Fuji Rock 2013 as those were the first NIN shows I ever saw live thanks to YouTube livestreaming them.

UNITED STATES of AMERICA
Pottsy out of his box again!
WEBSTER HALL, NEW YORK 1ST.
Lovely to be back in America to premiere the Substance tour, today is Friday. The plane we flew over on must have been in service from the 70’s? You didn’t have to look out of the window you could just look out between the gaps in the bulkheads..scary! Apart from that it was a nice flight over to Toronto to sort out the Merch for our tour. Then we make our way to N.Y.C, and sure enough landing in New York is wonderful to see still, but the traffic afterwards, is terrible;( Luckily our hotel is near the gig so I can walk to sound check and then after to the gig, which is great fun.
This really is a supercharged city, crackling with energy. This first night is nearly full and the atmosphere is superb. A great reception for New Order and again for Joy Division, quite balanced I thought. It is lovely to be here. Only problem I have is my transmitter for my guitar will not work??? And if I move more than 4 ft away from it the signal drops completely …so no bass. This really hampers me on stage, as I cannot go to the sides. What a bummer. I hate it;( I am thinking it's the Bluetooth signal being overloaded or bounced back by everybody’s phone in the Hall). Shit! I struggle through feeling very immobile. Outside afterwards two English girls grab me and go to great lengths to tell me that,
‘It felt like Art. In fact it was Art.’ They chorus.
I am very flattered. It isn’t easy by any means, but The Light work so hard for me, and the music, that sometimes it feels it. Thank you boys!
WEBSTER HALL, NEW YORK 2Nd.
Back to the gym for me and a nice afternoon beckons. As I walk to the gig again, I marvel at how busy this town is. It is Saturday night and you can feel it in the air…..Hope and Life everywhere. Everything I see as I walk along reminds me of film after film, or series after series, Assault on Precinct 13, Kramer vs Kramer etc., Kojak to Sex and The City. Bonkers. The second night is better than ever as I start to relax a little. We have many new and old friends present which is lovely. A SELL OUT! crowd goes mental from start to finish, the bass is the same, meaning I cannot venture far from my transmitter, which is now really annoying me as I forgot to mention it to Phil. Afterwards he puts me in an Uber saying,
‘You can’t walk at this time it’s dangerous!’
Oh how I regret that. It took 25 mins to walk and in the cab 75mins? As I drag myself to bed tired out (then can’t sleep because of the adrenaline/Jet lag) I think how lucky I am. Thank you God.
Up early, a bit bleary eyed but so are the others, and we get join the crawl to JFK for our flight to…..
THE WILTERN, LOS ANGELES.
I love L.A, always have, ever since the first time we came in 1981 and Bruce Willis stopped in his Mercedes 500 to let us cross Sunset Boulevard. What a place! It is totally ridiculous but great fun. The Wiltern on Wiltshire is a wonderful old theatre, very well kept and still beautiful inside and out.
Huge and ‘Sold Out’ again, what is going on??? I am very proud. Tonight my old mucker Moby is on board singing Ceremony and Transmission.
He seems very relaxed indeed, and both songs go off without a hitch. Afterwards I meet a young girl absolutely covered in tattoos, all of Joy Division. She is very young and proudly rolls her sleeve up to show me…..my signature??? Tattooed on her arm from when I signed it in 2013. WOW!
I am amazed by our fan’s devotion, I really am. It is humbling.
I get to see some great old friends while I am here, and learn some very interesting things about New Odour. But hey, let’s not go there;) Let’s keep it light, no pun intended;)
SAN ANTONIO
A nice flight down to San Antonio, which has just been flooded and our Hotel smells like it too. It stinks of damp and humidity. The gig is a funky old club but quite small but has been SOLD OUT! for months, and as the evening and my old friend Kerry Jagger appears, the place is packed, and amazingly both sides, left and right, open out to let in more people. We play very well and it is as hot as hell. I help a woman out with some water at the front of the stage for her young daughter, eventually I have to bring them both up on stage for the rest of the set, it is simply too boisterous at the front. Afterwards as we chat, she tells me she had been to see New Odour recently and her daughter had thrown up at their gig! I am lost for words, but take it as a compliment;)
CAFÉ IGUANA, MONTEREY, MEXICO.
A nice flight sees us in Mehico again, and Monterey is a very American city. Sold out tonight and it does not disappoint. A very enthusiastic audience love New Order then devour Joy Division. Fantastic.
JOSE CUERVO PEPSI HALL, MEXICO CITY.
Nice to see our old friend Hector.
Mexico City is proving to be a fantastic place for us to play, simply because of the adoration of Joy Division. It seems the most searched for group on the internet in Mexico City is the Manchester Post Punk Pioneers….Hooray! Hence all the bootleg merchandise stalls outside the venue. Like a little village of illicit merch!
The venue is huge and we are told The Stone Roses played 3 weeks ago and got 5000 people. Tonight we get 4600! I am delighted. The New Order section goes well but The Joy Division set goes down bonkers….It is amazing! I am flabbergasted. I tear off into the night as the last chord of L.W.T.U.A. is still ringing in my ears, smiling like a lunatic. I had spent the day jogging round the city and it is such a delightful place, the people are lovely. I am amazed that American’s are so scared of the place;(
GUADALAJARA
After last night we are really looking forward to playing here, but typically after the fantastic high of last night we are due a low. The lads have trouble from the moment they get into the venue. A dangerous stage, a P.A. company that normally does weddings, complete with a dangerous generator, terrible backline hire gear, no security, no promoter etc, etc.,
Phil phones me to tell me how bad it is going and worrying about not only our safety but also the audiences. No one at the venue seems to know how many tickets have been sold and Phil takes the heart breaking decision to pull the gig;( What a shame. We are devastated. We were having such a great time too. A quiet night beckons and then we make the long journey home on two of the oldest planes I have ever been on since coming out here. Blooming hell what’s going on?
I arrive home and go into 10 days of book promotion, which was hard going.
Me an Bunny
Talking is so much more difficult than playing. It wears you out, it really does.
me and ken
With a bit of promotion for The Hacienda Classical thrown in.
It’ll be soon time to come back to America;)
Cheers Hooky’ 16;)
