EMAIL: I just wanted to say thank you again for the sweater. My grandmother loves it and will be the envy of Clan Marner at my extended family’s Christmas Day backyard hockey tourney. Did you leave the flowers? If you did, I hope you don’t mind but I took them home. You have good taste, my girlfriends admired them and my cats tried to eat them. —M (1/1)

Auston’s out having drinks with a couple of the guys after their Saturday night win when Mitch’s email comes through on his phone.

Against his better judgement, he taps it open. The regret is swift, though, because he can physically feel the way his smile completely overtakes his face at her words - and there is a zero percent chance that the guys won’t notice it too, but there’s no getting it under control.

“Damn, Matty,” Naz says into his beer, and of course it’s loud enough to draw the attention of the entire table.

“What?” Auston asks, and he’s playing stupid, quickly schooling his expression into something akin to irritation. He sets his phone down and all but glares back at the several faces turned in his direction.

“Who was that grin for, eh? You wheeling someone tonight?”

The comment sets off a round of interested sounds from the guys, and Auston rolls his eyes and refuses to acknowledge how hot his face and neck have grown.

“I’m checking my email, bro, mind your business,” he says gruffly. He clears his throat, takes a sip of his own drink to have something to do with his hands.

“‘Email’,” Kappy parrots in a voice that suggests he isn’t buying a word of it. A few of the other guys laugh at that.

“Oh, fuck off,” Auston says as he flips his phone around to flash everyone his inbox quickly. Which would probably shut them up, except Naz is reaching out before Auston can read the play, and snatching the phone away with a triumphant shout.

Auston isn’t sure where the panic comes from, because it’s a work email, totally professional and it’s not like… it’s not like he and Mitch are doing anything *wrong*.

His face burns as Naz reads the email to himself and then snickers, hooting, “Marner, huh? Shoulda guessed that. You sent her fuckin’ flowers, bro?”

The rest of the guys laugh again, though it isn’t really unkind. If anything, they look mostly curious, teasing but not making fun.

“Flowers?” Willy asks, delighted.

“For her grandmother’s birthday,” Auston snaps, like that should’ve been obvious.

Auston’s hands clench into sweaty fists in his lap, and he knows he sounds breathless when he gasps at Naz to give the goddamn phone back. Naz, finished with his fun, tosses it gently into the air for Auston to catch easily, and immediately pocket.

“Fuck off,” Auston says again, and this time he’s glaring for real. “Don’t you dare– don’t. Don’t fucking say anything to her about it, I swear to god you guys, I will–”

“Relax, Juice,” Willy tells him, amused but reigning it in for Auston’s benefit. “None of us will say anything. What you do or don’t do with Marns is all you, bud.”

Auston unclenches his jaw and takes a breath as the rest of the guys chime in to agree with Willy.

“For real, though,” Naz says, “if you need a wingman, you know where to find me.”

Auston should probably appreciate the offer, but what he says is “That really won’t be necessary,” and they go about their night as usual.

He waits until he’s home to respond to Mitch’s email. He’s careful not to mention anything about what happened at the bar, types out:

“Hi, Mitch,

I’m glad to hear that your grandmother likes her present! Hope she enjoyed the W tonight, and looking forward to getting her another one tomorrow.

That backyard tourney sounds seriously amazing. We don’t have anything like that in Arizona. Do you play, too?

Yes, the flowers were from me. Roses are definitely more my speed, I think. I appreciate the compliments on my taste, though I do have to admit that a lot of it comes from having so many years of practise buying roses for my sisters, and my mom. I’d certainly hope I know what I’m doing in the rose department by now!

Say hello to your kitties for me!

It’s definitely not a “work email” response, and Auston knows it even as he presses send and shuts his laptop down for the night.
