Joe Austin
I entered high school at the age of 13 due to a November birthday and no inclination at that time to give an immature little imp like me a cushy, extra year of pre-k. We called it nursery school back then and if you could flush a toilet you were on to Kindergarten.
So, barely out of my tweens, I remember exiting the bus, walking through the doors of Williamsville South High School and bracing for verbal attack. The kids here were intimidating. I felt so very naive and unsophisticated. I was a chubby, pimply open target. But as I navigated my way towards homeroom, I quickly noticed that nobody noticed me. Middle school had been so stocked with nasty. But refreshingly, High School kids seemed too busy getting to where they were getting and doing what they were doing to side-eye a dorky, incoming Freshman.
And so the year proceeded. I had my Mill Middle School friends and I welcomed new ones. I joined chorus and theater and the newspaper staff and made my way through the year.It was immediately clear to any incoming member of the student body that the biggest name on campus was Joe Austin. He was quarterback of our football team, The Williamsville Billies. (We are a suburb of Buffalo, home of The Bills, and our town name is Williamsville. Our mascot is a billy goat. It’s adorable.)
Anyway, when I told Media Path Podcast producer Dina Friedman that the star quarterback’s name was Joe Austin she said, “Oh, my God. It may as well have been Johnny Football.” But honestly, that was his name. Joe Austin. I was an obedient Freshman. I went to the obligatory compliment of games and pep rallies. “Go Billies!” I was in dutiful awe of the team, led to victory by our own Joe Austin. We all understand high school football stardust. It's like having celebrities on your campus. If we passed Joe Austin in a hallway, we’d jab each other and jerk our chins in his direction. You didn’t want to stare but, come on. It was Joe Austin, walking right past us. Carrying books, like a person.
I was so insignificant a high school ripple that the yearbook misspelled my name in the homeroom photo. As you can see, I defiantly carved an “r” IN INK over the “z” in Palankez. The year progressed. The seasons changed. From football to baseball. Joe Austin played baseball because, of course he did. We had absolutely nothing to do with one another. I never spoke to him. I never even imagined speaking to him.
That’s the year I enrolled in an acting class at The Studio Arena Theater and got to take the Main Street bus downtown and ride home with my Dad. That’s the year I skipped that acting class one day to watch The Cowsills on The Mike Douglas Show in the TV section of AM & A’s department store. That’s the year I become obsessed with the three part vocal harmony stylings of The Lettermen and began collecting their rich catalogue of records. That’s the year O.J. Simpson came over to our house for dinner! That’s the year our theater department put on Mame starring Bob Hinshaw, my actual senior crush. He could sing and dance and by the time he graduated, he had a beard. What a man. I had auditioned for the show with Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head and It turns out that Bacharach is very rangey. So, I was on the stage crew.
There was a lot going on during my Freshman year of High School. Joe Austin and I were in very separate orbits. The school year came to an end and that summer I decided to learn golf. I believe I was searching for acceptance. My natural interests had met with a ton of interference in our household. I wanted to play the drums, join a little league team, have a paper route, wear baseball caps, hockey skates and high tops. None of the above was “for girls.” So, OK, let’s try golf.
Every golf course has a driving range and a putting green. That’s where you take lessons and practice and both are situated fairly closely to the first tee of the course where there is a tiny building called the starter’s hut or shed. The Starter is an employee who is responsible for the orderly and timely movement of tee times, controlling the pace of play and thus ensuring that golfers are less likely to get beaned by the foursome behind them. The starter was equipped with a clipboard, a watch and a list of names organized into threesomes and foursomes. The job requires comportment, multi-tasking and grace under pressure as country club personalities can often be described as "challenging."
That summer, the starter at our country club was Joe Austin. And that summer, Joe Austin and I became best buddies. Nothing romantic. Just great pals, roaming the Westwood Country Club together, sharpening our games and talking about whatever mattered to us as dusk settled on the golf course. He was a delight. Bright, funny, kind. There was nothing mystical or magical about our friendship. We just liked each other.
The Universe had presented me with a perfect leveling of compatible humans removed from societal sorting systems such as High School. That’s how it felt from my perspective. To me, Joe had seemed unknowable. It’s possible that to Joe, a country club kid like me was from a different world. It’s hard to know. But absent any organized hierarchy, caste or strata, we were pals.
My friendship with Joe Austin lasted only the course of that summer but the lessons it taught me are sustaining. I belong anywhere I aspire to go. I may have to work to earn entry and acceptance but I can get there and I can build meaningful friendships with kindred souls.
The summer ended. I moved on to three more years of high school. Joe headed off to college or somewhere outside my view.
We enter each other’s lives to share lessons. I learned a lot from Joe Austin.

International News:
--- "BEIRUT (AP) — The leader of Lebanon's militant Hezbollah group says the world will benefit from having an "idiot" in the White House. Hassan Nasrallah said in a speech Sunday that his group is much stronger than when it was created in the early 1980s and should not be concerned about threats from the West. Referring to U.S. President Donald Trump, Nasrallah said "we are very optimistic that when an idiot settles in the White House and boasts about his idiocy, this is the beginning of relief for the oppressed around the world." Trump has vowed to take a stronger stance against Iran, which is a key sponsor of Hezbollah and other militant groups in the Middle East. The White House said Iran was "on notice" after it tested a ballistic missile."

Domestic & International News:
--- "North Korea fired a ballistic missile into the sea early on Sunday, the first such test since U.S. President Donald Trump was elected, and his administration indicated that Washington would have a calibrated response to avoid escalating tensions. The test was likely to have been of an intermediate-range Musudan-class missile that landed in the Sea of Japan, according to South Korea's military, not an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM), which the North has said it could test at any time. The launch marks the first test of Trump's vow to get tough on an isolated North Korean regime that last year tested nuclear devices and ballistic missiles at an unprecedented rate in violation of United Nations resolutions. A U.S. official said the Trump administration had been expecting a North Korean "provocation" soon after taking office and will consider a full range of options in response, but they would be calibrated to show U.S. resolve while avoiding escalation."

--- "Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Sunday called President Trump a “pathological liar,” while Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) reiterated that “a few” Republican senators are concerned about the president’s mental health. The strong words from two high-profile senators came as Democrats attacked Trump’s travel ban and said that members of his administration should be investigated or have security clearances suspended for recent comments or conversations with Russian officials."

--- "WASHINGTON (AP) — A top White House official sidestepped repeated chances Sunday to publicly defend embattled national security adviser Michael Flynn, leaving the fate of one of President Donald Trump's senior aides uncertain following reports that he discussed U.S. sanctions with a Russian envoy before Trump's inauguration. The president, who spent the weekend at his private club in Florida, has yet to comment on Flynn's status. Nor has Vice President Mike Pence, who previously denied that Flynn had discussed sanctions with Sergey Kislyak, the Russian ambassador to the U.S. Pence and Flynn spoke twice on Friday, according to an administration official. Trump has told associates he is troubled by the situation, but he has not said whether he plans to ask Flynn to step down, according to a person who spoke with him recently. Flynn was a loyal Trump supporter during the campaign, but he is viewed skeptically by some in the administration's national security circles, in part because of his ties to Russia."

--- "Senior White House policy adviser Stephen Miller made the rounds on the Sunday talk shows over the weekend, and his comments about voter fraud have earned him justifiably dim reviews. The Washington Post's Philip Bump and Fact Checker Glenn Kessler dealt with those claims in depth. But amid all the baseless and false statements about electoral integrity, Miller did something even more controversial: He expanded upon his boss's views of whether judges are allowed to question President Trump's authority. --- "WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. (AP) — Teachers from elementary school through college are telling students how to distinguish between factual and fictional news — and why they should care that there's a difference. As Facebook works with The Associated Press, FactCheck.org and other organizations to curb the spread of fake and misleading news on its influential network, teachers say classroom instruction can play a role in deflating the kind of "Pope endorses Trump " headlines that muddied the waters during the 2016 presidential campaign. "I think only education can solve this problem," said Pat Winters Lauro, a professor at New Jersey's Kean University who began teaching a course on news literacy this semester."

7 Classic Buffalo Bars Perfect for Thanksgiving Eve
Tonight is one of my favorite nights of the year for catching up with old friends over a cold beer and good conversation. Buffalo’s classic pubs and taverns offer the perfect venue.
These spots have woven their way into Buffalo’s fabric over the decades and are linchpins of their neighborhoods. Some are holdovers from the city’s blue collar era when nearby millworkers ended each day with a cold one. Others attract a crowd with their one-of-a-kind atmosphere. All of these taverns are a window into Buffalo’s personality and soul – comfortable, cozy spots where the conversation, catching up and friendliness flows as freely as the beer from the taps.
Here are seven classic bars and taverns for you to consider exploring on this night before Thanksgiving:
Founding Fathers Pub This has been my go-to bar since I first turned 21. Former social studies teacher Mike Driscoll operates this presidential themed bar packed to the gills with presidential paraphernalia, from campaign posters to placemats featuring the miniaturized portrait of every Commander in Chief. Driscoll is quick with a trivia question while you’re at the bar; he also serves as quizmaster at the bar’s trivia night on the first Tuesday of every month. With free popcorn and nachos to boot, it’s no wonder Esquire and Buzzfeed each named this bar one of the most unique in the country.
Arty’s Grill Located in the shadow of Buffalo’s towering Central Terminal, this bar hearkens back to a time when taverns and gin mills dotted the streets of Buffalo’s Polonia neighborhood. Take advantage of one of their frequent drink specials – think less than $2 for a Genny – and grab a bulletin from St. Stanislaus near the door on your way out to convince the missus you were at church instead of imbibing.
The Blackthorn Pub South Buffalo is a place where “everybody knows your name,” and perhaps nowhere embodies the cozy and close-knit character of this historically Irish neighborhood better than the Blackthorn Pub, a Seneca Street mainstay for over 40 years. Tim Russert, the late South Buffalo native moderator of NBC’s Meet The Press, loved this place, and Guy Fieri featured it on “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.”
Ulrich’s 1868 Tavern The oldest tavern in Buffalo, celebrating its sesquicentennial next year, is a special spot for my family. My great-great grandfather, George Dobmeier, owned this tavern on the northern edge of downtown in the 1890s before it became Ulrich’s. A picture of him in front of Dobmeier’s Tavern still rests on one of the walls; my great-grandmother used to tell stories to my grandmother of peeling potatoes there as a little girl to help her parents with meal prep. That Ulrich’s, once a stalwart of Buffalo’s German quarter, still exists after all these years is a testament to them and all the owners since.
Cole’s Cole’s has been a staple of the Elmwood Village since 1934. There is probably over 80 years’ worth of decorations in here, too: bison and elk heads, merry-go-round horses and high school and college pennants adorn the wood-paneled walls, booths and ceiling. Aside from the old-school atmosphere, Cole’s also has three dozen beers on tap and a full pub-grub menu.
Gene McCarthy’s photo by Eric Frick
Gene McCarthy’s Back in Buffalo’s industrial heyday, scores of grain scoopers laboring in the silos dotting the Buffalo River whet their whistles after a long workday at nearby watering holes. One of those pubs was Gene McCarthy’s, a mainstay in Buffalo’s Old First Ward for over 50 years. These days, Gene’s also rocks an impressive craft beer selection thanks to the adjoining Old First Ward Brewing Company, and makes “McCarthy’s Style” wings – tossed in a tangy blend of bbq sauce, bleu cheese and hot sauce – that might just be some of the best in the city.
The Glen Park Tavern The village of Williamsville has a history nearly as long as Buffalo’s – dating back to the early 19th century – so it should come as no surprise to find a classic tavern here, too. The Glen Park Tavern just celebrated 130 years in business. Stop in at the tavern’s original mahogany bar, order a pint, and give thanks for a village – and a region – filled with great classic bars.
