The History of the Rose Bowl
The History of the Rose Bowl The college football season culminates in a series of bowl games with more than 80 teams competing across three NCAA divisions. There are more than 40 Division I bowl games, including the Holiday Bowl, Guaranteed Rate Bowl, and Las Vegas Bowl. Six of those bowl games rotate as College Football Playoffs semifinal matchups, and are collectively known as the New Year’s Six. The Rose Bowl, first played in 1902, is the oldest college football bowl game. Also known as the Tournament of Roses football game, the inaugural game was played on New Year’s Day in 1902 at Tournament Park and featured the Michigan Wolverines and Stanford Cardinals. Michigan won the game 49-0. Because of the lopsided score, Tournament of Roses organizers (Valley Hunt Club) decided to replace the football game with chariot races the following year. Football has been the permanent attraction since 1916, however. Washington State defeated Brown University 14-0 in the second-ever Rose Bowl Game in 1916. The New Year’s game gained momentum and popularity over the next few years, leading to the construction of the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California. Now known as “America’s Stadium,” the venue hosts the Rose Bowl Game every year and has also hosted five Super Bowls as well as Olympic soccer matches in 1984 and the 1999 Women’s World Cup. The University of Southern California (USC) defeated Penn State 14-3 in the first-ever Rose Bowl Game at Rose Bowl Stadium in 1923. USC won its second Rose Bowl in 1930, and leads all college football programs with 25 titles. It last won in 2017, defeating Penn State 52-49. Michigan and Ohio State are tied for second with eight titles each, although Michigan also has the most Rose Bowl losses with 12. USC and Michigan have played eight times in the Rose Bowl, most recently in 2007. During its early years, the Rose Bowl typically featured a team in the Pacific Coast Conference against a top-ranked opponent in the Eastern US. Since the introduction of the College Football Playoff in 2014, the Rose Bowl functions as a national semifinal game every three years. The Oregon Ducks defeated Florida State 59-20 in the first Rose Bowl national semifinal game in 2015. The Rose Bowl has twice been hosted outside of California. It was played in Durham, North Carolina in 1942 due to concerns of a Japanese attack on the West Coast. The game was played in Arlington, Texas, in 2021 after California Governor Gavin Newsom announced fans wouldn’t be allowed in the stadium due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The winner of the Rose Bowl Game is awarded the Leishman Trophy. The trophy was named in honor of the father-son duo of William L. Leishman and Lathrop K. Leishman, who served as Tournament of Roses presidents in 1920 and 1939, respectively. While there have been several memorable moments in Rose Bowl history, few games if any have matched the excitement and intrigue of the 2022 Rose Bowl between Ohio State and Utah. The Buckeyes defeated Utah 48-45 in a historic matchup. Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud finished the game with 573 passing yards and six touchdowns, both of which were Rose Bowl records. Wide receivers Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Marvin Harrison Jr. also tied Rose Bowl records with three receiving touchdowns each. via WordPress https://farooqshahzad.wordpress.com/2022/11/22/the-history-of-the-rose-bowl/

#alexandermanly #theDailyrecord #wilmingtonnc #wilmingtoninsurrection Like many children of former slaves, Alexander L. Manly (1866-1944) was partially descended from a slave-owner. Born in North Carolina, Manly was reportedly the grandson of Charles Manly, who after emigrating from England had become the governor of North Carolina in 1849. Manly studied printing at Hampton University, and then settled in Wilmington, where he and his brothers established The Wilmington Daily Record, at the time perhaps the only daily newspaper run by anyone black in the country. In the 1890s in Wilmington, 9 men had came together and started a campaign through a newspaper named the Caucasian to get poor whites to join the Democratic party and leave the Fusion party. The Fusionist were black and white Republicans who had came together and gotten political power for themselves. The Secret Nine as they were known, Hugh MacRae, J. Allan Taylor, Hardy L. Fennell, W. A. Johnson, L. B. Sasser, William Gilchrist, P. B. Manning, E. S. Lathrop, and Walter L. Parsley, had used the lie of black men raping white women to get white Fusionist on their side. In 1898 Rebecca Latimer Felton had joined their cause. She was an avowed white supremacist, proponent of lynching, and former slave owner. She was the most prominent woman in Georgia at that time. She gave a speech August 11, 1898 to the Georgia State Agricultural Society that was printed in the Daily Star a newspaper in Wilmington on August 26th. She said, given the inability of the church or courts to protect white women from "the ravening human beasts—then I say lynch; a thousand times a week if necessary." Manly printed a rebuttal in his paper the Daily Report where he simply told the truth. That white women a lot of times were attracted to those black men and that the vicious lies printed in various papers were nothing but white supremacist propaganda. The plotting whites of Wilmington didn't take to kindly to that. When they overthrew the government of Wilmington they made sure that they burnt down Manly's building that housed his operation. He had already made his escape to DC, where he married before moving to Philadelphia. https://www.instagram.com/p/CKJ6QlEBJCu/?igshid=1r1t9l3sum6bu
