“You alright?” Ren asks his friend.
Willard doesn’t respond.
“I think he’s broken,” Ariel whispers into her boyfriend’s ear, knowing that the country boy would start some sort of witty banter, but he doesn’t this time and it concerns her.
“Nah,” Rusty disagrees, setting her bag onto the table before sitting down. “The girl who sits beside him is finally partnered up with him.”
“Oh,” Ren says, as if he understands. “I don’t get it.”
Ariel shakes her head. “Remember the girl he was talking about, the one who helped him out at the welcoming party for the freshman.”
Her boyfriend nods, she can tell he kind of understands what she’s saying but isn’t fully there. “She told those boys to back off when we walked over to see what was happening.”
“Oh, the little spitfire who made sure Willie boy was okay while we were forgotten.”
“Yeah, exactly.”
“So,” he turns back towards Willard. “You gonna ask her out?”
The young man who can’t seem to cut a loss with his hat, gasps. “I couldn’t- I won’t- I don’t think she likes me like that?”
“You may think that now,” Rusty starts. “But I know for a fact that she does.”
“You’re lying.”
She scoffs, “how dare you think I would lie about something so serious.”
He whines and slumps over, forehead resting against the cold wood of the tabletop.
You walk out from behind the isle, smiling when you realize who it is at the table. You take a few steps until your behind Rusty’s chair. “Uh- hi.”
The three turn towards you, the couple with looks of shock present on their faces and the girl who invited you here has the widest smile on her face. “Come on over and take a seat. Here,” she stands out of the chair and gestures for you to sit.
You shake our head. “Oh, I couldn’t take your seat.”
“I insist.”
“But-”
She grabs you by the shoulders and forces you into the chair. “There we go.”
You tilt your head, a slight pout tugging the corner of your lips downward. “Where are you gonna sit?”
Willard just about died there as he doesn’t remove his gaze from you. How can you be so sweet and thoughtful?
Ren kicks him under the table.
He leans down, rubbing his calf as he glares at his friend- or former friend, depending how mean his said friend decides to be.
The one from Boston nudges his head in your direction.
He shakes his head.
Ren purses his lips.
Willard stares at his friend, mentally sending him threats while simultaneously praying that his friend doesn’t embarrass him.
The brunette smiles, grabbing another chair from an unoccupied table, setting it besides her friend. “There, that’s better.”
“I feel like I’m overcrowding your group. I should leave.” You scoot the chair back, getting ready to stand up when he stops you, his hand resting on your forearm.
“Don’t leave. You’re not bothering anyone, and you certainly aren’t crowding us. I could us someone else to talk to,” he jabs his thumb in Ren’s direction. “He ain’t always good with conversations.”
“Hey!”
Willard turns back towards his friend with an innocent smile on his face. The boy doesn’t take his eyes off you as you cover your mouth to hide your amusement. He knows that’s one of the sounds he wants to hear from you again.
Ren shakes his head, turning towards Ariel, who just smiles at him.
-
“Don’t give me that look.”
“I’m not giving you any look.”
He hums, “mmhmm, sure.”
“Is there something on my face?”
He hums, hardly paying attention to anything you’re saying.
“I asked if there’s something on my face. You keep staring.”
He slowly removes his hand from your arm and keeps his eyes on the desk after he turns and pretends to work on his homework. He doesn’t realize it but now you feel bad.
Did you say something wrong? Or maybe- you take a moment to study his body language to see if he’s uncomfortable so you can apologize if that’s the case. But the longer you stare, the more you notice.
The way he’s picking at his fingers, his head down so his hat covers his face but not all of it because you can see his flushed cheeks, the same scarlet red that happened during the freshman party.
‘Oh. Ohh.’ You subconsciously bite your bottom lip to suppress your joy.
Had you known he liked you, you definitely would have figured out how to spend more time with him and get him to stop being so quiet. You’ve seen him with his friends around school and he sure as hell ain’t a shy guy.
“Moving on,” you tell yourself. “Do you want to get started on the-”
He can’t take the kicking or Rusty’s note any longer. He turns to face you once more. “Do you like to dance?”
You’re mouth opening and closing as your brain tries to understand what was said to you.
-
“I think she’s the one that’s broken now,” Ariel whispers to Rusty.
-
“Uh- dancing?”
He nods, “or we could do something else-”
You tilt your head, “are you asking me out right now? Because not even two seconds ago you were as flushed as a lobster. I definitely wanna go on a date with you, don’t think I don’t because I do. I’m just wondering where this,” you wave your hand around in front of him, “came from.”
“He just needed a little kick is all,” Ren chimes in with a smirk directed towards his friend.
All of a sudden, the one from Boston falls backwards in his chair.
Ariel is quick to check him over and help him up with Rusty’s assistance.
You through your head back and laugh as you clap your hands before realizing that one, you’re in the library and two, the librarian is the meanest woman ever and has no problem banning people even if they need to check out a book for a project.
You turn towards Willard who has the same look as you. You grab your bag and wait till he’s done shoving everything into his bag. Once he’s on his feet you grab his hand and run out.
-
After you two catch your breath, you turn around and stare up at the building.
“How bad do you think it is?” He asks you.
“Very but, luckily for us she didn’t see us and we’re in the clear.”
He feels his arm swinging back and forth, finding it strange he glances down and sees you’re still holding his hand. “Hey.”
You turn around to face him.
“You never answered my question about dancing.”
“I didn’t?” You ask, knowing full well you didn’t.
He squints, he knows the actions one takes when avoiding the “You want to dance?” question. He deems himself an expert in that and knows the perfect first date. “You know you didn’t.”
You pout. ‘Damn. He knows.’ “But, I think you’re gonna have a lot of fun on our date.”
“Date? When did you ask me out?” He furrows his brows, scratching the back of his neck. “Well, -I”
“I mean, I’m not saying no. I’m just asking.”
“Oh.” That certainly perked him up. “Well, do you?”
“Do I what?”
He narrows his eyes at you, pretending not to like what you’re doing. “Do you want to go out with me?”
“Now that you’ve officially asked me, I’m afraid I’m gonna have to check my calendar and- oh yes. I am free, every day after six. Isn’t that convenient?”
“Very convenient. Is it too soon to ask if I can come by your dorm tonight and take you out?”
You take a step closer, less than foot between you two. “I’d think that be nice. Just know you have your hands full with me, handsome.” You peck his cheek and steal his hat before walking away.
He nervously chuckles until he realizes what you did. “Hey!”
You turn around, a mischievous smile dancing across your lips.
“Gimme my hat back!”
You shake your head, “it gives you more of a reason to stop by.”
“Oh, come on!” He sighs, watching you turn the corner. He starts patting hair down. “I’ve got hat hair,” he mumbles.
-
You almost bump into Rusty, who smacks your shoulder. You reach for your injured arm and rub the sore spot. “You’re so mean.”
“That is what you get for almost getting us banned from the library.”
“Yeah, well… that’s your problem.”
She shakes her head, “I see things went well.”
“It did. I still didn’t believe you even after I sat down.”
“That boy has had heart eyes for you since the second he stared at your shoes.”
“I’m gonna pretend you didn’t say that.”
“Did it- nevermind, looks like it did.”
“Wait- you two knew about this?” Ren asks, pointing between Rusty and Ariel.
“Yep. He needed a push,” Rusty adds.
“And I wasn’t told, why? I’m the guy’s best friend.”
All three of you coo at his confession.
“Knock it off. When did you plan this with these two?”
“Oh,” you try to think back to when this first started. “A couple of weeks after the freshman party.”
“That long?” His eyes nearly popped out of his head.
“Kind of. I have English and an elective with them two so when we had to do a group project, we got to know one another, and they put the pieces together.”
“Fine.” He cracks a smile. “So, when’s the date?”
You don’t want to tell them but you’re so excited, you can’t keep it to yourself any longer. “Tonight.”
The girls giggle and pull you in for a hug.
“Alright, alright. Break it up. Now you,” Ren points at you. “Don’t break his heart or else you’ll have me to deal with. Got it?”
“Crystal clear, sir.”
He sighs and walks away, “I’m dealing with a child.”
“You can’t focus on him. You’ve got a date to get ready for,” Rusty tells you.
“What time is it?”
“Almost four.”
“Oh my gosh. I’ll see you guys later.” You barrel past them and run towards your dorm.
Luckily you were able to get ready with twenty minutes to spare and rather than being on your phone you figured it would be a good idea to start working on writing down some ideas for your most recent project.
-
A knock on the door drags you out of your thoughts. Your brain is on overload and not properly functioning because you forgot about tonight, until you open the door.
He brightens up at the sight of you before he reads your expression. “Are you okay?”
You rub your left eye, trying to regain focus. “Yeah.” You’re racking your brain trying to figure out why he’s here and then it hits you. “Oh, shoot,” your eyes widen. “Give me two seconds and then we can go.” You run back to your desk, closing your textbooks and notebooks before reaching for your purse.
“Are you sure you’re alright?” He asks while you push him out the door.
“Yeah, why? Do I not look okay?”
He immediately shakes his head, “no, no. You- you look absolutely amazing. I just- you look tired, and I don’t want you to go out if you’re not feeling up to it.”
You suck in your lips to keep yourself from awing at his sweet behavior. “No,” you shake your head. “I’ve been wanting to go on this date for a while now and we’re doing this.”
You spin around, walking ahead of him.
He follows, tilting his head when he realizes what you said. “You’ve been waiting to go on a date with me?”
You can hear the teasing in his voice followed by his not so innocent teasing smile. “I didn’t say that.”
“I’m pretty sure that’s what I heard.”
“You’re wrong.”
He shrugs, “okay.”
-
The closer you two get to the parking lot, the more anxious he gets. “Fair warning, I’m borrowing Ren’s car while I save up for my future car.”
“That’s fine. As long as I can get in and out, I’m good.”
“Even if you couldn’t, I would give you a push.”
You give him a suspicious look, holding onto the door. “A push, huh?”
The smile falls from his face, “not- not- not like that.”
You pinch his chin between your index finger and thumb, “I know.” And you settle into the car.
-
He shakes his head and closes the before heading around the car. “You’re gonna be trouble for me, aren’t you?”
You chuckle, “it’s always the quiet ones, right?”
“Always the quiet ones,” he mumbles.
-
He parks the car. “Alright, we’re here.”
“Is this the part where you pretend, we’re on a date but you actually murder me because this place looks sketchy and like a perfect place to murder someone.”
“Clearly you need parental control on, so those thoughts don’t come to mind ever again.”
“You’re so mean.”
“Not mean if I’m caring about you.”
You don’t respond or look in his direction.
He smiles, pulling you with him leading you toward the empty room.
“Are we supposed to be in here?” You ask, finding it weird that the dancing hall is empty.
He shrugs. “I know someone, and they made sure this place was empty for us to use.”
“He says sounding more and more like a serial killer.”
He groans, “I’m not.”
“I know, I’m teasing and it’s certainly working.”
“Working?”
“You’re not as in your head as before.”
“You sneaky little minx.”
“Hey, hey,” you raise your hands, hiding the smile that tries to sneak its way onto your lips. “I’m just going with the flow here.”
“Yeah, well,” he clicks the button on the remote left on the table closest to the wall. “The flow is going to teach you to dance.”
You purse your lips together to keep yourself from laughing.
He sighs, “I knew I shouldn’t have listened to Ren’s advice.”
“No, no,” you snort. “Ple- ease,” a chuckle interrupts you. “Please use the advice. It’s great.”
He narrows his eyes at you. “I’d like to see you use your sarcasm and put it into your dancing skills.”
All amusement leaves your body after that. “You’re mean.”
“No, I’m not.”
“I... I don’t dance.”
“I know.”
“Well, if you know then why are we here?”
“I’m gonna get you those dancing shoes.”
“My boots are made for walkin’ and nothing else.”
“Keep it up and you won’t be getting any sleep tonight.”
“That a promise?”
“Keep your clothes on, sweetheart. I know I'm irresistible.” He stands in front of you, holding his hand out.
“Can I politely decline?”
“Not today.”
“Damn.” You slap your hand onto his. “Don’t come crying to me if your feet are sore.”
“Don’t worry. I’m gonna whine to Ren about how the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen had me teach her how to dance.”
“I bet you say that to all the girls on campus.”
“Just you,” he spins you around, pulling you into his embrace, “sweetheart.”
You blink once, trying to wrap your head around what happened.
-
“That was new.”
“But fun?” he asks, his voice full of hope.
“No.”
“Are you-” he loosens his grip, “are you serious? We can-”
“I’m just joking,” you turn towards him while checking out his side profile.
“I swear I had fun.” You assure him for the millionth time tonight. Clearly you need to work on your teasing. “I just- I never thought the dancing life was for me but you, you certainly proved me wrong, and I hope that we can do more of that because you’ve started something.”
“Looks like I’m gonna have to take you on more dates in order to keep your dancing itch satisfied.”
“I’m quite sure I liked how you phrase that but yes.”
He smiles, stuffing his hands into his front pant pockets. “So...”
“Goodnight, Willard.” You unlock the door to your dorm room.
“Does this- does this mean we’re uh-” H scratches his neck (his head still bare since you’re not giving him his hat back, although he is not complaining). “We’re gonna go out again?”
“Willard?”
“Yeah?” He stares at you with those big puppy dog eyes of his.
“Would it be too early to ask you to be my boyfriend?”
“You stole my line.”
“I’ll see you in class tomorrow, Will.” You take a risk and kiss his cheek before rushing inside your room.
The corner of is lips tug upwards as he heads back to his and Ren’s room.
-
“Look at what the cat dragged,” his buddy teases him. “Is that a smile I see? What happened to “she doesn’t like me”?”
The southern boy scoffs, kicking off the boot he was taking off at his friend. “Hey! We agreed no shoes on the beds.”
“We also agreed we wouldn’t make fun of someone when they got back from their date.”
“So?”
“So what?”
Ren rolls his eyes, “how was the date?”
“I don’t kiss and tell.”
“You two didn’t kiss so you can tell.”
“How would you know if I didn’t kiss- they were listening weren’t they?”
The one from Boston shrugs. “This is why I don’t want to tell you anything. Woody would be better than you guys.”
Ren’s silence speaks volumes.
“Seriously?”
“We were curious.”
He shakes his head, grabbing his things for him to be able to finish his nightly routine. “Can’t get any privacy around here.”
-
“How was it?” Ariel asks, tossing her textbooks off to the side.
You pretend to be casual and shrug, “eh.”
They raise one brow and give you a questioning look.
“We’re going out!”
They shriek and push themselves off the bed, pulling you into a jumping hug.
“Finally,” Rusty says, plopping back down onto her bed.
“Shut up.”
“Did you finally learn how to dance?” Ariel asks.
“How did you know I couldn’t dance?”
“It’s obvious, darlin’. You never want to whenever we go out.”
You mimic her answer while taking off your shoes and setting Willard’s hat on your desk. “Don’t you have a roommate to go back to?”
“Nope.”
“I’m going to sleep.”
“Enjoy your sweet dreams of Willard.”
You chuck your pillow at the two and they chuckle, doing what they were doing earlier.

I lost all these asks trying to answer them so idk what happened I’m sorry.
1) Hi hi hi, I was wondering if you could write a Willard x reader fic from the 2011 footloose? I'm having Miles Teller brain rot and cannot stop thinking about him!! 💕💕✨
2) Can I get a Willard Hewitt x reader where your Rens sister and you guys meet at school then is really impressed you and your brother dance so good at the diner plssss?? I love Willard
3) hi!! i was wondering if you could write something for willard hewitt (footloose 2011)? i can not find a single fanfic for this man so if you could write something with fluff and maybe like best friends to lovers that would be so awesome! thank you so much :)
Notes: Hope you guys are happy. I had to watch the Footloose remake to do this fic. The remake. It’s...not good.
Anyway, first footloose fic! Yay! I hope you like even if it’s ridiculously short.
When you agreed to move down to Bomont with your brother, you didn’t think it would be as shitty as it was.
You’d already lost your mom, you didn’t need the rest of the joy in your life sucked out, but apparently the town was looking to do just that.
No music? No dancing? Are you kidding? Isn’t that against the first amendment or something?
Apparently not, as it seemed this rinky-dink town hadn’t changed its views since the ‘80s.
You worked as a waitress at Starlite and Ren was stuck in a cotton gin. The school hated Ren’s guts and didn’t take too kindly to your “explicit and vulgar display” of band t-shirts. Plus that plus prissy little Ariel Moore made you wanna hurl, even if Ren was infatuated with her for some god-knows reason.
It wasn’t all bad. You helped Ren fix up the yellow bug and he drove you to school every day, not that you had another choice besides maybe walking.
And there was also Willard. The ray of sunshine through the cloud of darkness in all his southern glory.
You guys met him the first day of school and the three of you meshed right away. You told him when Ren was bullshitting him and he explained what all of his crazy phrases meant.
You weren’t sure you were into him “like that” yet, but you’d heard Ren smack him upside the head for commenting on your looks once, which told you enough.
And, lucky for you, Woody’s uncle, Claude, was a pretty rebellious boss.
“Hey, Woody!” Claude said. “Check the door man. Cop still here?”
Ren and you exchanged a glance as Woody went over to the window to watch the cop pull away.
“Five-O getting his move on,” Woody reported. “Whatcha got for me, Uncle Claude?”
Claude reached down below the counter and pulled up a burner CD. “David Banner, bootleg. Don’t get too krunk out there. First sign of the police, I’m gonna pull the plug. I don’t want a fine and you don’t want another ticket.”
“Wait,” Ren said. “You got a ticket for dancing?”
“He got two tickets for dancing,” Woody’s girlfriend answered. “One more and he’s off the team.”
You followed Claude to the back where he had a record player that doubled as a CD player. Your mouth dropped open in awe.
“All right, let’s get this party started,” Claude said.
He flipped some switches that turned on the outside speakers and turned back to you.
“Now, I know you’re new here so I’ll let you go watch this one time,” he said. “But don’t expect me to let you off work just to dance.”
You grinned widely before practically tearing off your apron to follow Ren, Rusty, and Willard outside.
The speakers were like old drive-in speakers that blared in the parking lot and you watched in awe as the previously perceived boring small-town kids danced better than you could.
“Yeah, dude, they- they get into it,” Willard said.
"Hey, you,” a girl said to Ren. “Come on, let’s dance.”
She pulled him out onto the floor and you watched gleefully as he busted a move.
“You dance, Willard?” You asked.
He blushed a little, shaking his head. “Oh, no, no way.”
“Why not?”
He shrugged. “I don’t dance.”
You rolled your eyes.
“Me and my boys are going to push everybody back,” Woody said to Ren over the music, pulling his leather jacket right off his shoulders. “Let me see you and your sister do your city slicker thing.”
Ren jogged over to usher you in with him and you happily obliged.
“Number 24,” Ren said and you nodded.
You both fell into a dance you’d choreographed together back in Boston, moving easily to the beat and doing your “city slicker thing.”
You shared a quick glance, a silent communication, before you both ran up and backflipped off the edge of a blue pickup sitting on the edge of the dance area.
The crowd cheered.
You laughed, falling into freestyle mode with the others as Ren walked over to dance by Ariel (who looked eager to receive the basically lap dance he was offering).
You felt alive for the first time since your mom. You missed dancing.
That was until you spotted Ariel and Ren grinding on each other shamelessly.
“Oh, gross,” you said, turning away and spotting Willard, who was already looking at you.
You flicked your head, gesturing for him to come join you.
He just shook his head and saluted you with his coke cup.
You sighed and walked over to where he was gathered with Woody, his girlfriend, and Rusty.
“Mind if I have a sip of that?” You asked Willard.
“Oh, uh, sure,” he replied, handing you his cup. “That was some pretty good dancing out there.”
“How would you know, you don’t dance,” you joked.
“I got two eyes, don’t I?” He asked, grinning right back at you.
You two were leaned so close you felt his breath on your face. It made your stomach flutter.
“Y/N, I was wondering-”
“You can put on a show for that guy, but that doesn’t mean I’m gonna.”
You both looked over to find Ren walking up to the group.
You and Willard leaned away from each other.
Ren’s jaw was so tight you thought he might crack his teeth.
“That guy block your boner?” You joked, referencing a joke Willard made a few days ago.
“Shut up,” he replied, shoving your head away jokingly.
Suddenly, the music cut out and Claude came over the loud speaker. “Attention, Attention. Ariel Moore, will you please come up to the front of the diner, your daddy is here for you.”
The crowd sniggered and laughed as “daddy’s girl” stomped her way up to the diner.
“Show’s over,” she said as she passed your group.
Your face contorted.
“Daddy’s gonna take her out to the woodshed,” Willard said.
“What the hell does that mean?”
“It means she’s in deep shit.”
You bit your lip to keep from laughing.
“Come on, loverboy,” you said, shoving your brother. “Let’s get home before we get picked up by the law at ten o’ one. Oh, and Willard,”
The boy in questioned looked up at you.
“We can finish our conversation tomorrow, okay?”
He smiled. “Yeah, alright,”
You grinned back and turned away from him.
Ren’s eyes narrowed at you. “What was that all about?”
You shrugged. “Nothing. Willard and I were having a conversation while you were feeling up the preacher’s daughter.”
“I was not feeling her up,”
“Oh, please, Ren, the whole parking lot could tell,” You replied, sipping the last of Willard’s drink you’d never given back. “You’re practically throwing yourself at her.”
“I was just dancing,” Ren retorted, pulling open the door to the bug.
“Funny, you never dance like that with me.”
“That’s because-” Ren huffed dramatically. “You know what, this conversation’s over.”
“Oh, I’m sure it is,” you replied, getting in the passenger side. “Can I pick the music?”
“Can you ever pick the music?”
“No?”
“There’s your answer.”
You rolled your eyes as Ren picked “dancing in the dark” by Bruce Springsteen for the ride home.
You turned to look out the window, noticing Willard in the rearview talking to Woody.
You smiled. This town might suck, but Willard makes it more bearable.

The Boy From Bomont
pairing: willard hewitt x fem!reader
warning: sexual harassment/assault, fighting
A/N: basically footloose 2011 in a different way.
Y/N’s POV
I don’t what it is about Bomont, it’s odd to me, we’re not allowed to listen to music including dancing. I’ve never been to a place like this or live in a place like this. My aunt, uncle, my cousins and I have to go to church, I’m not really a religious person but I’ll try to respect the church if I can.
I go to Bomont High School which their traditions at this school is nothing what my last school had. No school dances and no music allowed anywhere at this school.
I meet Ariel and Rusty in my ELA 3 class and Ariel reminds me of a girl who I went to school with, really rebellious, not a goody-goody I can tell, and has a boyfriend who looks like a college kid. Rusty is like me, not what Ariel is.
Rusty took me to the drive-in and everyone was really nice and really dirty minded, like my friends back home. I met Willard, he reminds me of a boy from my last high school. Really southern and really kinda has a good heart.
“What do want from the menu?” Woody told me.
I look at him about to speak but his girlfriend interrupted me.
“Leave that girl alone, so there’s a lot of good food on the menu, I suggest the hot dog.” She says.
I chuckle, “I think I’d like the hot dog with nothing on it.” I said to Claude.
Claude gives me the hot dog and says to Woody, “Now, I don’t want a fine, and you don’t want to get another ticket.”
“Wait, you got a ticket for dancing?” I asked Woody.
“He got two tickets for dancing, one more then you’re off the team!” Woody’s girlfriend said.
I get my stuff and go outside to see what’s going on, I hear music from the speakers.
“Holy.” I go to where Rusty and the rest of her friends are at.
Everyone continues to dance and I’m amazed by this, everyone hates the fact that dancing is against the law.
“Y/N, come on let’s dance.” Woody’s girlfriend says to me, leading me to the middle of the huge crowd of people dancing.
I start to dance and I get into it and I hear people cheering, I don’t know why for me or for another person. I continue dancing and noticing no one is dancing, just me. I got kinda nervous but I continue to dance. Ren starts dancing with me, I follow his lead, until I notice Ariel so I stop and faked a reason why I’m going to Rusty and the rest of her friends.
“Attention. Attention. Ariel Moore, will you please come to the front of the diner? Your daddy is here for you.” Claude says in a speaker.
Ariel leaves with her dad. “Daddy’s gon’ take her out to the woodshed.” Willard says.
“What does that mean?” I said looking at him.
“It means she’s in deep shit.”
What is wrong with the county?
I got to know Rusty friends a lot better, especially Willard, he told me about his personal life and what even happens at this county. I can’t stop looking in his eyes but I can’t help it. He seems like a sweet guy to me.
Ren gets in an invite to go to the speedway and Woody, Willard, Rusty, Woody’s girlfriend and I go to support Ren and I notice the gang, they are creepy to me. I get uncomfortable by approaching them and Willard notices me get uncomfortable so he holds my hand. The words I’m even hearing right now get me uncomfortable. I don’t want to be here.
“I love that lil dance you were doing last night. Noticed that you can swing your hips like, what are they called, a stripper.” Chuck says to me.
He’s friends giggle.
“Thank you, didn’t notice a maggot was looking at me being a pervert.” I said back.
He wants to kill by the way he’s looking at me.
“Now, how about you start dancing with this.” Chuck says to Ren getting in a tractor.
I hate this.
The race starts and I get nervous because some of Chuck’s gang get in three buses. I hope Ren survives this. My friends and I get up to where the flags are at.
“Go Ren!” We all say.
Ren is winning but we saw the most terrifying things I’ve ever seen. The buses tipped over and destroyed. Ren tries to stop and Woody and Willard goes out there to save him. Ren jumps out with Willard and Woody.
“Holy shit!” I say. Rusty laughs at my comment.
THE NEXT DAY
I get to the library to study for some things in some of my classes and I notice someone in the corner of my eye and it’s one of the guys from yesterday.
“Can I talk to ya.” He says.
I ignore him.
“Listen, yesterday was cool wasn’t?”
I stay silent.
“You’re actually kinda cute. Wanna somewhere more private?” He says.
“I don’t want to.” I said to him.
“Come on, a girl like you, might get a baby in her belly.” He says with a disgusting smirk on his face.
“I gotta go.” I get my things and try to leave but he stops me and tries to touch me.
“Let go of me you creep!” I struggle and kick his dick.
“Excuse me?” A librarian says.
I look at him and he takes me to the principal’s office.
AT THE PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE
“Now Ms. Y/L/N, why did you kick Rich?” Principal Roger says to me with the librarian and a cop in the room.
“Rich tried to touch me! And he, he wanted to rape me.” I said.
“Now Y/N, tell us the truth, what did he do to you to make you hit him.” Principal Roger says.
“What I just said.” I say looking in his eyes.
“Well he said that he was trying to help you with your homework.” He says to me.
“He’s lying!” I kinda yells.
“Now Y/N-“
“He told me that a girl like me can get pregnant!” I interrupt him.
“Then why did you kick him?” The librarian says.
I make a big sigh and say, “He sexually harassed me!”
“I know Rich won’t do that.” The cop says.
“Are you kidding me? Does anyone in this town understand about sexual harassment or assault?” I question.
“We do Y/N.” Principal Roger says.
Bullshit.
“Y/N, here’s your ISS slip and have a good day.” He says.
I take the slip out of his hand and look at it and look at him.
“You guys really don’t know what’s going on with women today don’t you?” I says and walk out of the office and went outside to get out of this hell hole.
“Y/N/N!” Ariel says to me but I ignore her.
“Y/N, what’s the matter?” She comes close to me.
I look at her, “Had the worst god damn day of my life.” I say.
“You wanna talk about it?” She says.
“I prefer not to, you won’t believe me.” I walk away.
“What happened?” She yells at my direction.
“You won’t even care!” I yell back.
I get in my car to drive at some abandoned warehouse. I get out of my car and start to get out and then start to think on what just happened at school.
“HE ASSAULTED ME, HE TRIED TO TOUCH ME AND I GET DETENTION!” I yell.
“IM NOT A STRIPPER CHUCK, ASSHOLE!” I yell again.
I start to cry and I sit on the floor and bawled my eyes out. Why do people don’t take women seriously? I curl up in a ball and cry to myself. I hear some footsteps, I look where the noises are at and it’s Willard.
I whimper a bit.
“What’s wrong?” Willard said walking up to me.
“I got in school suspension.” I wipe my tears off my face.
“What happened?” He sits next to me.
“That guy yesterday, Rich, he tried to touch me and he, he told me I would look good pregnant, and when he was trying to touch me, I kicked him in the ball sack.” I look at him.
“And you got suspended?” He questions.
I nod.
“Y/N/N, I’m sorry that happened to you.” Willard says and hugs me, I hug him back, I cry again.
“Those guys are assholes.” Willard whispers in my ear.
I giggle. “They really are. Does this town even care about women’s rights at all?” I stop hugging him and look at him.
“Apparently not.” He says.
I look down at the ground and Willard makes me look at him. I look at him with teary eyes, he kisses me. I kiss him back. He’s the only guy I can trust to be around me including Ren and Woody.
We stop kissing and he gets my hair away from my face.
“I wanna go home.” I said.
“I’ll take you home Y/N/N.” He says.
“Really? I mean I can drive myself.” I said.
“No, I insisted Y/N/N.” He holds his hand out for me so he can help me back up on my feet.
He helps me up and I give him my car keys. I get in the passenger seat and Willard gets in the driver’s seat.
“You ready?” He says looking at me.
“Yeah.” I look at him.
He drives away from the abandoned warehouse, I can’t believe what happened today. He pulls up to my driveway but we stayed in my car for a few minutes.
“I have a question Willard.” I look at him.
“Yes Y/N/N?” He looks at me.
“Why aren’t we allowed to dance or play music whatsoever?” I ask.
“Um, Ariel’s brother, Bobby and some of his friends went partying, they were drinking and driving, and they got in a car accident on a bridge.” Willard told me.
“Is that why Ariel is the way she is now?” I ask.
“Yeah, she used to be a goody two shoes back when we were freshman and sophomore and now she’s a rebellious girl who goes to church.”
“I met that type of person and she’s my friend since elementary school and she reminds me of Ariel.” I said to him.
“And she’s the preacher’s daughter.” He says.
I can’t believe that I just heard that, I never knew about that but I remember seeing her at church but never got to meet her.
“And she hangs out with those creeps and the one who tried touching me?” I said.
“Yep.” He says.
“Willard, do you want me to drive you home?” I said.
“My house is three houses down, you know that Y/N/N.”
I never noticed whatsoever.
“Oh I forgot about that Willard.” I said.
“It’s okay.”
Willard and I get out of my car and I walk up to him, he gives me my car keys.
“Again thank you for driving me home Will.” I said looking up at him.
“You’re wel- Will?” He questions.
“Am I allowed to call you that? You can tell me if you don’t want me to call you that.” I say.
“It’s fine. It’s cute that you just said that Y/N.” He gets closer to me.
“I-I love you.” I said.
“I love you to.” He smirks.
We kiss again. I hear giggling and it’s my cousins watching us. I look at them kinda embarrassed. Willard laughs at them.
“Again thank you for driving me home Will.” I said to him.
“Once again, you’re welcome.” He smiles.
“I’ll see you tomorrow at school?”
“Hopefully all because of your stupid in school suspension dates.” He says.
“Don’t remind me.” I said walking to my car to get my book bag and the slip.
“See you tomorrow Y/N/N.” He says about to walk away.
“Hopefully Will.” I said back.
I show my aunt and uncle the slip and obviously they get angry but I tell them the full story and they agree with me but they want me to do the suspension days. I’ll do it but I don’t deserve to go to detention for what that asshole did to me.
I eventually showed and told Ariel the ISS slip and the whole story on what Rich did to me and Ariel confronted Chuck and Rich about it and Chuck beats her up. She tells her father and he slaps her because she’s not a virgin. When she came to my house, I call Rusty to come over and I patch her up. The three of us stayed up talking about my situation including Ariel’s as well but besides that, we talked for hours until we fell asleep on my bedroom floor.
A FEW WEEKS LATER
Ren is teaching Willard to dance. Woody, Ren, his cousins, my cousins and I help Willard to dance and he kinda got the hang of dancing. He asks me to dance with him and I join him. Ren and Woody notice us kinda flirty.
“You guys! There’s children here.” Ren says.
“Oh we caught them kissing a while back.” Sarah, my cousin, says.
“She just exposed you two.” Ren laughing.
We kinda get embarrassed but sometimes we don’t even care what people think of us.
Ren and I keep on helping Willard to dance, he kinda got confused but then one day he danced like Ren. Ren and Willard practiced a dance a week or so and Will finally did it!
A few weeks later, the county including students from Bomont High School and parents went to the county courthouse to talk about why dancing isn’t a crime. I sit with Willard and my aunt, uncle and my cousins sit next to me. Ren talked on the bench and a few hours later, dancing isn’t against the law anymore! So the whole senior class goes to the abandoned warehouse that I went to, to cry my feeling out but this is about Bomont’s first dance. We get decorations up on anything that involves a wall.
THE NIGHT OF THE DANCE
I get my dressed for the dance I hear a knock on the door and it’s my aunt.
“You look beautiful Y/N/N.” She says tearing up.
“Thank you Y/A/N.” I hug her.
“Someone’s waiting for you.” Y/A/N smiles.
“Willard?” I smile.
“Yeah Y/N. He looks really cute.” She whispers in my ear.
I look down, I think she can tell I’m blushing.
“I’m going downstairs, don’t stay up here too long.” She says walking out of my room.
“I will.” I said.
I fix my hair and walked downstairs and see Willard. Looking like country boy. I can tell he looks so happy.
I approach him and he has a crossage in his hand, I believe that my uncle gave him that.
“You look beautiful.” Willard whispers in my ear.
“Thank you.” I say.
He puts the crossage on my wrist and it matches my dress.
“Now you two, have a fun time and if something happens, call me.” My uncle said.
“We will Y/U/N.” I said.
I hug my aunt and uncle including my cousins and Willard drives us to the warehouse.
When we got out of the car we see Chuck, Rich and this other guy approaching us.
“Look who it is, the school’s slut and the school’s cowboy.” Chuck says.
“Let’s not fight alright, Rich how’s your small dick.” Willard says.
“It’s fine. Listen, you need to pay my medical bill.” Rich says directly at me.
“Let’s go Will.” I whisper to Willard.
We try to walk away but Chuck and Rich grab me and the other guy grabs Willard and I try to fight back but they were too strong.
“Do something Willard!” I scream.
“I can’t fight Y/N!”
“Fight Will!”
Willard starts fighting the other guy and I start to fight back Chuck and Rich. Ariel, Rusty, and Ren comes out to us fighting.
“Get your damn hands off of her!” Ariel screams at Rich and Chuck.
I fight with Ariel and I notice that Willard, Ren and Rusty is fighting the other guy. When everything was over Willard approached me.
“Are you okay?” Willard says touching my cheek.
“I’m okay, are you?” I question.
“I am Y/N/N. Let’s get in that warehouse.” He says grabbing my hand and taking me to the door.
Ariel, Ren, and Rusty join us and told us if we’re okay. When we got in the warehouse, music began to play, we danced like it was the last day on earth dancing.
Bomont isn’t that bad, except me getting suspended. I made good friends with the best humans I’ve ever met and I have a boyfriend who’s the most sweetest boy I’ve ever met as well.
Ariel told me this quote one day, ‘Dance like no one’s watching.’ And that’s what I did, danced like no one’s watching.

I Wanna Dance with Somebody Chapter 7
TITLE: I Wanna Dance with Somebody Chapter 7 PAIRING: Willard/OC RATING: T CHAPTER: 7/? SUMMARY: Molly has just moved to Bomont with her older brother Ren after the death of their mother. Where Ren gets into trouble, Molly tries to remain invisible. That is until an awkward country boy tries to befriend her. Can Willard help her regain the confidence she lost? And more importantly, will he help her to dance again?
Molly eyed the building warily.
Wren and Ariel wanted to have some fun, so of course they dragged Molly and Willard along with them.
Being in large crowds made Molly very uncomfortable, so she stuck close to Willard’s side. He dressed in what she would consider a very stereotypical dressy cowboy outfit with a baby blue shirt, tight blue jeans, cowboy boots, and a tan cowboy hat. The baby blue shirt had black designs across the shoulders and down his chest. She thought blue looked rather good on him.
By some coincidence, Molly had chosen a blue sundress with a pair of white cowboy boots that Ariel let her borrow. Molly blushed when she noticed that she and Willard matched on accident.
They entered the country themed bar and saw people dancing.
Ariel headed for the dancefloor while Willard and Molly hung back.
“Come on,” Wren said.
“Nah, I’m good. I’ll watch you guys,” Willard said.
“Mols?”
Molly shook her head.
Wren turned to Ariel. “You go out there and have some fun.”
Ariel nodded and headed for the dancefloor.
Wren pulled Willard aside. “What’s the matter with you, huh? We drove two hours to get here. You’re gonna stand around and mope? You could at least ask my sister to dance!”
“I don’t dance. All right? I don’t dance.” He looked at Ariel having fun dancing and leaned in toward Wren. “I can’t dance. At all.”
“It’s country line dancing. It’s a white man’s wet dream. Anyway, it doesn’t matter.” Wren pushed Molly towards Willard. “Molly can teach you. She was on our school’s dance team.”
Willard looked down at Molly. “What? You didn’t tell me that.”
Wren made his way to the dance floor, leaving Willard and Molly alone.
“You wanna go get a drink?” Willard asked.
Molly nodded and slipped her hand in his as they headed for the bar. Since they were underage, the bartender just gave them sodas.
“You look real pretty tonight,” Willard told her.
Molly blushed. She pulled out her phone and typed in a message. You look very handsome. Blue looks good on you.
This time Willard blushed.
Communicating through phone had become their thing since Molly still wasn’t comfortable speaking in front of people. She only spoke to Willard when they were alone and even then, it was in short sentences.
They watched Ariel and Wren dance for a while.
Molly tapped Willard’s soda can and pointed to the bar.
“You want another?” he asked.
Molly nodded.
“Comin’ right up, darlin’.”
As Willard walked away, she grabbed his hat and put it on her head. While she was waiting for Willard, a young man walked up to her.
“Hey darlin’. You’re lookin’ pretty tonight.”
She glanced over her shoulder, looking for Willard.
“What’s your name?”
Molly tried moving away from him, but he grabbed her wrist.
“What’s the matter? Cat got your tongue?”
Molly wanted to scream at him to let her go, but she couldn't. She tried pulling away from him, but he only tightened his grip.
“Hey! Get your hands off her!” Willard yelled, pushing through the crowd. He punched the guy in the face.
The man let go and Willard turned to Molly. “You okay?”
She nodded and looked for Wren, who was still on the dance floor with Ariel. Molly was too distracted to see the man grab Willard and punch him, sending him to the floor. Molly gasped and looked around for a weapon. She saw a beer bottle and broke it over the man’s head, before dropping to her knees beside Willard.
His cheekbone was starting to swell and he would definitely have a shiner come tomorrow.
Tears filled her eyes. This was all her fault. If only she had the courage to speak then Willard wouldn’t have had to be her knight in shining armor and he wouldn’t have gotten punched.
“Molly?” Willard asked.
Molly shook her head and fled the bar.
“Molly!”
Molly made it the car with Willard hot on her heels.
“Where are you going?” Willard asked, “Wren has the keys.”
“My fault…” she whispered.
“What?”
Molly turned to Willard and placed a hand on his cheek. “My fault.”
“No. No, darlin’. Nothing that happened tonight is your fault. He shouldn’t have grabbed you.”
Willard wrapped his arms around her. “It’s not your fault. I promise.”
But Molly couldn’t shake the guilt she felt.

For my own amusement, I started tracking how the songs from the Billboard Hot 100 from this week in 1974 have been used in movie soundtracks. Feature Films only people! As you read, you will see the “gimmes” that made me think of the idea, but I’m putting this behind a cut because there ended up being so many which had a soundtrack match. As a reminder, you can follow along as I do the Hot 100 each week corresponding to which classic AT40 and VJ Big 40 get played on SiriusXM ‘70s on 7 and ‘80s on 8 respectively with my ever-changing Spotify playlist.
100. “Beyond the Blue Horizon” - Lou Christie. This one is a cheat because when I looked it up on Spotify it showed up on the Rain Man soundtrack. The only song I could have told you off the top of my head was in Rain Main is the Belle Stars’ version of “Iko Iko.” Rain Man marked the first soundtrack appearance for Christie’s version.
98. “The Air That I Breathe” - The Hollies. Very memorable appearance in The Virgin Suicides, which had the score done by, wait for it, French electronica duo Air. The song would go on to be heard in other movies.
90. “Billy Don’t Be a Hero” - Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods. The Paper Lace version appears in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Both acts topped the charts with the song on opposite sides of the pond: Paper Lace in the UK and Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods in the US. [Update: the BD&H version may be in "To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday"]
87. “Hollywood Swinging” - Kool & the Gang. This oft-sampled track first appeared in a feature film in the 2005 Get Shorty sequel Be Cool.
84. “La Grange” - ZZ Top. Armageddon first, followed by others.
68. “Band on the Run” - Paul McCartney and Wings. I didn’t search for this at first because I didn’t think there would be anything, but then Jet was on the chart at #27, so I did a twofer search on imdb. Jet has not been in any films (save “One Hand Clapping, a rockumentary on Paul, which I don’t count for purposes of this discussion) but “Band on the Run” appears in The Killing Fields, in a shocking scene that contrasts the light tone of the pop song with the horrors of the Khmer Rouge’s executions of Cambodian citizens.
66. “For the Love of Money” - The O’Jays. Has been used many times, according to IMDb the first feature film use was the Richard Pryor roman a clef (if I’m using that right, I only know it from Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man) Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling.
59. “Rock Around the Clock” - Bill Haley and his Comets. Notably used in Blackboard Jungle, the song is on this 1974 chart for its appearance in American Graffiti.
55. “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo” - Rick Derringer. First one that comes to mind is Dazed and Confused bc I had that soundtrack, but it has been in others.
49. “Love’s Theme” - the Love Unlimited Orchestra. The swirling strings of this song indicate that someone is indeed falling in love. That’s my way of saying, if you think you haven’t heard this, you have. Imdb has it in Mean Girls, among others.
47. “The Way We Were” - Barbra Streisand. The titular song of the 1973 film The Way We Were, starring Barbra and Robert Redford. A little long, but worth a watch bc Barbra is amazing in it. At the 1974 Academy Awards, Marvin Hamslich won Best Original Song honors for this tune, and was awarded Best Original Dramatic Score for his other musical work on the film. I always think of Lisa Loopner’s big crush on him.
44. “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing” - Stevie Wonder. First feature film usage was the 1998 Eddie Murphy flop Holy Man, which surprised me as it’s such a good song, you’d think it would have been in something earlier. Notable given Eddie’s impression of Stevie Wonder he performed on SNL!
42. “Rock On” - David Essex. Michael Damian’s cover (or remix as described by Patton Oswalt) was recorded for the 1989 2 Coreys classic Dream a Little Dream, and per imdb, David Essex’s original appears in the alternate-history comedy Dick, from 1999.
37. “Oh Very Young” - Cat Stevens/Yusef Islam. Surprisingly, this sweet song appears in the gross-out bowling comedy Kingpin.
36. “Jungle Boogie” - Kool & the Gang. This song may have been used in the most films and tv shows of any I’ve researched so far, but its first appearance was in Pulp Fiction.
34. “The Payback - Part 1” - James Brown. First feature film appearance was in 1995′s Dead Presidents. A different James Brown track appears on the soundtrack for racist-ass Melly Gibson’s Payback from 1999.
33. “Help Me” - Joni Mitchell. Another why’d-it-take-ya-so-long shocker, this mellow tune first appeared in the 2018 sci-fi movie Kin, narrowly beating Welcome to Marwen from 2019.
31. “The Entertainer” - Marvin Hamlisch. The title theme from the Redford/Newman team-up The Sting. Hamlisch won a record-tying third Academy Award in 1974 for Best Original Score for The Sting. It seems at this time Best Original Score and Best Original Dramatic Score were separate categories. Hamlisch would win Grammys for both this and “The Way We Were,” eventually becoming an EGOT winner in 1995.
30. “Eres Tú” - Mocedades. This Spanish Eurovision entry notably appears in the buddy comedy Tommy Boy when Chris Farley and David Spade’s characters sing along with the radio.
28. “Midnight at the Oasis” - Maria Muldaur. Catherine O’Hara and Fred Willard perform their own rendition in the Christopher Guest film Waiting for Guffman. That should be all you need, but imdb has the first film appearance for the song as 1995′s Falcon and the Snowman.
24. “Let it Ride” - Bachman-Turner Overdrive. This lesser-known but not less great BTO jam has appeared in a handful of films, the first being Ash Wednesday, starring Elijah Wood and directed by Edward Burns and not Garry Marshall. Note: it does not seem to be in the Richard Dreyfuss gambling movie Let It Ride, a classic VHS cover of my youth.
18. “Mockingbird” - James Taylor and Carly Simon. Memorably performed by Harry and Lloyd in the dog van in Dumb and Dumber, later joined by a Latinx family on guitar and vocals. Before that, Beverly D’Angelo and Chevy Chase’s characters also sang it on their road trip in National Lampoon’s Vacation. I couldn’t find an instance where James and Carly’s version played in a movie but I am sayin’ there’s a chance. That it could be someday.
16. “Tubular Bells” - Mike Oldfield. This instrumental is best known for being the theme to The Exorcist, but I was surprised to learn from the Wiki entry that it was not written for the film. Tubular Bells or something that’s meant to sound like it has been in a ton of other things, generally uncredited. Of note: Mike Oldfield would go on to do the score for The Killing Fields.
14. “Seasons in the Sun” - Terry Jacks. Now here is the type of song that ‘70s haters point to as an example of the whiny wuss rock that they feel over-dominated the era. It’s not one of my favorites but I appreciate it for how weird it is. I suppose being translated into English from a French/Belgian poem will do that to ya. Before I did my search, I imagined I would find it in a Farrelly Brothers movie or two, possibly the Anchorman sequel. However, the only feature film match I found was the 2002 indie flick Cherish, a movie I have never seen despite being confronted by the cover many times at rental places over the years. Before today, when I watched the trailer, I would have told you it starred Jennifer Love Hewitt and was about “a band trying to make it.” It turns out I am thinking of the 1999 film The Suburbans. Anyway Cherish seems aggressively indie and very of-its-time in a way that makes me want to watch it.
13. “Dancing Machine” - The Jackson 5. The song appears in the Blaxploitation spoof I’m Gonna Git You Sucka, as well as the movie of Starsky & Hutch.
11. “Lookin’ For A Love” - Bobby Womack. This was in the movie of The Ladies Man starring Tim Meadows as his SNL character Leon Phelps. I almost skipped this one but I’m glad I didn’t because Tim Meadows rules.
8. “The Loco-Motion” - Grand Funk Railroad (the single and album it was on are credited to Grand Funk). We have our second song from the Kirsten Dunst/Michelle Williams movie Dick. Since that was satirizing Nixon and Watergate, well done to the filmmakers for including these 1974 hits! It appeared in one earlier film, My Girl 2.
5. “Come and Get Your Love” - Redbone. Known to modern listeners for appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy. [Sidebar: if you can find a way to listen to the With Special Guest Lauren Lapkus episode T.G.I.G.O.T.G.OST (Thank God It’s the Guardians of the Galaxy Original Soundtrack) with Sean Clements and Hayes Davenport, do it!] The song first appeared in Dance Me Outside, a Canadian film about First Nations youth, which is a cool parallel with Redbone being composed of Native American musicians. “Come and Get Your Love” is also in Dick!
4. “Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me” - Gladys Knight & the Pips. Another SNL feature pops up on our list, 1994′s It’s Pat: The Movie.
3. “Hooked on a Feeling” - Blue Swede. ALSO known to modern listeners as being from the GOTG, but possibly only in the trailer? I’m fuzzy. The song ALSO also appears in Dick, and its first feature film appearance was Reservoir Dogs.
2. “Bennie and the Jets” - Elton John. You know it, you love it, you cackle at the gag in Mystery Team. IMDb has this song down as first appearing in the low budget feature Aloha, Bobby and Rose, from 1975. It is ALSO in My Girl 2, with proper credit for Sir Elton.
1. “TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)” - MFSB featuring The Three Degrees. IMDb says this appeared in the Al Pacino film Carlito’s Way, and I have no reason to doubt them because it means we are done! Thanks for readin’ and rockin’ along.

Hyperallergic: How the Cooper Hewitt Museum Reconciles the Old and New
A view of the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum lobby (all photos by the author for Hyperallergic unless otherwise noted)
When I wrote about my visit to the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC, I sought to relate what that museum means in terms of its place in our culture. I wrote about how it conveys a story of triumph despite overwhelming odds — which is the sort of story that seems to appeal to the general public.
As someone who has extensively studied museums in an academic context, I decided to embark on a kind of case study, asking one central question of some of this city’s most well-known art museums: What does this museum add to the culture of the city? Another way of asking this is: What is special about this particular museum? I want to ask this because I live in a city that has more than 100 museums, some of which, like the Metropolitan Museum of Art, have existed since the 19th century, and others, such as New Museum, were formed only 40 years ago.
The other end of the Cooper Hewitt’s great hall
I decided to visit the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum first, because it somehow feels both antiquated and technologically advanced. I wonder how it could be both simultaneously. The museum is housed in the former home of businessman and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. The 64-room Georgian Revival mansion, built from 1899 to 1902, was designed by the architectural firm of Babb, Cook & Willard, and has a large private garden attached. According to the museum’s website, the house was planned to be used as a place where Carnegie, after his retirement, could manage his philanthropic projects.
Inside the Process Lab
The building now sits on the well-known museum mile, and has that Upper East Side feel of dynastically preserved wealth, redolent in almost every aspect of the building: the nest of serenely white plaster archways at the entrance; the great hall’s majestically high ceilings consisting of coffered, carved oak; the decorative plaster ceiling with raised strapwork design on the second floor; the intricate teak, parquet flooring; oak woodwork paneling; the carved wood railings of the grand staircase; and the stained glass tympanum and roundels over the entrance to the main floor’s reception room. The immediate impressions I have in the first five minutes I spend in the museum is of old world splendor, of inherited wealth, but also of meticulous care for the building and its contents. I imagine an array of specific cleaning and repair tools concealed in a room back of house, and a cadre of cleaners and restorers that have been sensitively trained to use them.

The Cooper Hewitt does a unique and contradictory thing with its displays. On the one hand, it presents design — that is, the creative and carefully planned fashioning of functional objects that seeks to make them aesthetically distinctive — as a crucial component of everyday life. On the other, it places antiquated objects in large vitrines as if to say that they have now passed out of everyday use and should be revered as art objects. These oppositional notions are resolved precisely by the subtle role the museum assumes as the arbiter of that transition from a useful tool to precious object. The Cooper Hewitt in essence decides whether a utilitarian object deserves to be preserved and included in its collection, which dates back 30 centuries and continues to accrue objects. Its Georgian Revival architecture seems to freeze the institution in time, and visually conveys to audiences that it exists outside of the current post-industrial, heavily digitized moment.
The “Open House” design by Matthew Mazzotta in By the People exhibition at the Cooper Hewitt
Yet, this persona founded partly on the museum’s wealthy provenance, and its affiliation with what is reportedly the world’s largest museum and research complex, present certain difficulties — the most obvious being how to appeal to contemporary audiences interested in technologically innovative design and new means of museum display. The Cooper Hewitt has largely solved this dilemma through a combination of clever exhibition choices and its new interactive technologies. Many of these were implemented during its $91 million, three-year renovation completed in 2014. For instance, visitors can now explore the digitized collection with 4K resolution touchscreen tables, or draw their own wallpaper designs in an Immersion Room. The Process Lab invites you to work on solving real-world design problems, such as creating new forms of efficient, eco-friendly transportation, and the famous Pen, a digital device conceived by Local Projects working with Diller, Scofidio + Renfro, allows you to electronically “collect” objects from around the galleries and save them in an online portfolio you can retrieve online when you return home.
The “Culticycle Prototype” by Tim Cooke and his collaborators in By the People
The museum’s exhibition programming also strives to be relevant to contemporary audiences. Earlier this year, By the People: Designing a Better America showcased contemporary, imaginative designs created to solve current problems, including a house that can be reconfigured into an outdoor theater, and buses transformed into mobile, fresh produce markets. Last year, Making Design displayed functional objects redesigned to serve aesthetic purposes, and seemingly decorative objects that had practical utility. It’s clear Cooper Hewitt is determined to develop an audience that appreciates the relevance of design to daily life. To couch this lesson in a populist language, the museum also has an ongoing Selects series begun in 2007 in which celebrities and well-known professionals talk about the design objects they personally own. This series has featured Ellen DeGeneres, David Adjaye, Thom Browne, and Maira Kalman.
The “Fresh Moves Mobile Market” exhibit designed by Growing Power, Hammersley Architecture, Architecture for Humanity Chicago, Engaging Philanthropy Inspiring Creatives (EPIC) and Latent Design and created by Tyrue Jones and fabricated by WM Display Group and collaborator City of Chicago and made for (as the client) Food Desert Action, in By the People
But the museum also does something else with its dynastic wealth: it launders it, making it palatable for a public that may be unaware of the origins of Carnegie’s fortune. Carnegie was an entrepreneurial savant who managed and revolutionized the steel industry — even using the extraction of raw materials to build his own home, the first in the nation to have a steel structure. However, he was also a brutal manager who had his steel workers laboring 12-hour shifts, seven days per week, and with one holiday per year, the fourth of July. He once lowered wages by 30 percent, thus provoking the Homestead Strike, and had his workers in such dangerous conditions that 2o percent of deaths among men in Pittsburgh during the 1880s were due to steelwork accidents. This museum hides that terrible history, allowing the image of Carnegie as a generous public patron to flourish even as the Cooper Hewitt museum flourishes. Unfortunately, this is very much typical of the story and treatment of inherited wealth in the United States: it is appropriated at severe cost to those whose own stories are often ignored, and that capital is converted into patrimony for a grateful public.
Installation view of The World of Radio (photo by Matt Flynn, © 2017 Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum)
Still, the Cooper Hewitt reminds us that what we invent and use today could constitute an aspect of the vast story of American culture’s development. The museum gives visitors a kind of contemplative oasis in which to see how design is not merely confined to fanciful constructions or items in a Hammacher Schlemmer catalog. At the same time, like several other great art institutions in the city (the Museum of Modern Art and Guggenheim come to mind) the Cooper Hewitt transmutes questionable inherited wealth into public patrimony. And this is a very New York story, one of palpable contrasts in this city of skyscrapers and gutters. The Cooper Hewitt is seated in the robber baron’s great palatial mansion, preserving the antiquated object while trying to anticipate our future needs.
Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum (2 East 91 Street, Upper East Side, Manhattan) is open weekdays and Sundays, 10am–6pm and Saturdays, 10am–9pm.

Get Them Cowboy Boots Moving
Pairing: Willard Hewitt x City girl!Reader (afab!reader)
Characters: City girl!Reader (afab!reader), Willard Hewitt, Ren McCormick, Rusty Rodriguez, Ariel Moore, Tony Moore (Ariel’s Cousin), Chuck Cranston, Cranston “henchmen”
Warnings: Fighting, blood, misunderstanding of one’s feelings, reader is oblivious to Rusty and Tony being together, Willard is a simp for the reader, mentions of the “hat rule”
Word Count: 1,533
*Reader is Ren’s bestie from Boston
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You throw your head back, headbutting the guy trying to pull you away from the others. You trip after escaping from his hold. You force yourself off the ground, spinning around to kick him.
He grabs your foot, tossing it to the side.
You’re already off balance and fall, landing on your stomach. You close your eyes, waiting for his next move, so you can kick him in his stomach.
“Come on,” Ren and Tony, Ariel’s cousin, haul you up before the former goes after Ariel’s dumbass ex Chuck.
You hear grunts and punches, finding Willard beating the shit out of the guy who was messing with you.
He shoves him away, turning to walk to you when another one of Chuck’s friends jumps on his back.
Before things could escalate, he maneuvers his way towards a truck him, slamming the guy into it, flipping him into the truck bed. He steps away before he could find himself in a hospital.
The girls run back over to you asking if you’re okay, distracting you from the fact that the boy with the country accent who just helped you, the one who’s seemingly been in love with a girl with curly air and an interesting, hardly heard of name, beat the crap out of some guy who was harming you.
“Are you two, okay?” You ask, checking over them, something you’ve been doing to everyone since you came to town.
“We’re fine. Are you okay? You took a tough fall with that animal?” asks Rusty, who glances over at the truck.
Tony makes his way over to you three, his hand on the back of Rusty’s back.
You shake off their concerns, “’course I’m fine.”
“Are you-” Ariel starts when Willard and Ren walk over to you girls.
“Everyone okay here?” Ren keeps his gaze on Ariel.
She nods, “yeah, we’re fine. I don’t know about her though.” She gestures to you.
“You guys go in. I’ve got to get a Band-Aid for my elbow and I’ll meet you in there right after.”
“No,” Ren shakes his head.
“Absolutely not,” Tony adds. “We all go in there as a group.”
You sigh, avoiding there gaze. “Just- I need a minute, alright?”
The girls sigh.
Willard stats behind you, gesturing for them to go inside.
Ren smirks, knowing his boy is about to make a move (or he hopes he is).
Tony sighs and shakes his head, knowing the kid ain’t gonna be able to spit the words out right.
The four leave.
-
You turn away, expecting all five to be in the building dancing the night away. You unlock your car, opening your trunk, searching for your first aid kit.
“I got a- a first aid kit in my car.”
You jump back, dropping the kit before smacking his arm when you see who it is.
Willard rubs his arm, “ow?”
“You dumbass. Why’d you do that?”
“I was trying to be nice, a gentleman some might say but clearly that didn’t go as planned.”
“Obviously. Shouldn’t you be in there, sweeping Rusty girl off her feet?”
“I could but she’s already got someone in there dancing with her.”
“Ah,” you nod, pulling out a Band-Aid and Neosporin. “I’m the only one without a date so naturally-”
“Woah! Woah! You’ve got this all wrong-”
“Oh, great. I’m not even good enough to be your date willingly. That’s nice.” You chuckle sadly and toss your trash into your trunk, not in the mood for anything else.
“No, Jesus! No! Just- just come with me, alright?” He holds hand out for you. “I want to show you somethin’.”
You shake your head, raising your hands to close the trunk, “if this is a prank or something stupid-”
“Stop talkin’ so we can start dancin’.” He slams your trunk closed for you.
You blink in surprise but can’t take a moment to process it any longer since he takes you by your hand, pulling you into the dance.
-
Couples are already dancing, crowding the floor leaving little space for everyone but, when Willard has something on his mind, he’ll come up with a plan and figure it out.
You and he stand near Ren and Ariel who are lost in their own world, beside them is Rusty with her man- “that’s Ariel’s cousin,” you point out.
“Sure is.”
You tilt your head.
“Why’s that so hard to understand?”
You turn your head back to his, watching his curious gaze. “I just- I thought you and Rusty were into each other?”
He shakes his head, “she wanted to make him jealous and I, being the good friend and guy that I am, I helped her out.”
“Oh.”
“You ready to dance?”
“I thought you didn’t dance. No. No- I’m sorry let me, correct myself- because you couldn’t dance.”
He straightens his posture with his hands on his hips. “Alright, listen here, Missy. I can dance… now and I am trying to lay on the charm here.”
“Charm?”
“Yeah, you know when a guy likes a girl. He tries to impress her.”
You furrow your brows, “when a guy likes-”
Willard hears someone whistling, he turns to see someone from one of his classmates pointing to you.
He grabs your hand and pulls you closer to the makeshift DJ station. He guides you behind the equipment. His hand drops down onto your lower back. “Alright, darlin’. This is when you play a good song and I run out onto the dancing floor and impress you.”
A smile sneaks its way onto your lips, “you don’t need to impress me, Willard.”
“Yes, I do. I need to make sure you know how much I like you before the night is over.”
“Will-”
“No. No. Play the song and watch, okay? Please?”
You sigh, placing the headphones on your head, “fine. Go get them boots movin’.”
“Is that a twang of country I hear in-”
“Will, come on, man.” Ren grabs the country boy and hauls him back onto the dance floor.
You’re barely paying attention to the music as the boy in the cowboy hat moves on the dance floor.
“Where’d he learn to dance like that?” asks Rusty, standing beside you with Tony holding her hand.
“I don’t know?”
“He’s really making sure you’re watching him.” She smirks.
“What?” You look up, turning towards her.
“You know exactly what I’m talking about.”
“I really don’t. I bet if I look back, he’ll be having fun, dancing the night away like the rest of the students.” As soon as you turn around, his pretty chestnut eyes right in front of you.
“You’re dancing now.”
You shake your head, “I can’t.”
“Why not?” He challenges you.
“Someone has to do the music-”
“I can do it.”
You sigh, “Tony-”
“Thanks, Tony!”
You giggle, “Willard! Willard, slow down.”
He stops in the middle of the dance floor, spinning you around before pulling you back into his arms. “Have I told you how beautiful you look tonight? And every other day and every time I see you.”
You move to face him, his arms still wrapped around your waist. You gulp, “I don’t think you have.”
“I’ve got some lost time to make up for, don’t I?”
You hum, stealing his hat off his head. “You also have yet to ask me a certain question.”
“Ah, right? You plan on giving me my hat back? I’m sure my hat hair is real bad.”
You lean closer to him, “no and wrong question.”
“You know the hat rule and anyone with half a mind know not to ask you out.”
“Possessive, are we?”
“Hell yeah, especially with a pretty lady such as yourself… who I’d be lucky to call mine?”
Your fingers play with the hair on the back of his neck, “I’m afraid I’m gonna have to think about that one.”
“Don’t break his heart now,” Ren interrupts your conversation.
You offer him a dry laugh, “very funny. How do you think priesthood will be?”
“Not cool, darlin’,” Ariel adds.
“And yet, you still love me.”
They shake their heads, dancing away from the two of you.
The boy dancing with you wastes no time. “Was that a yes?”
“I’d say the fact that I’m wearing your hat and not dancing with someone who will step on my toes should be more than enough for you to know.”
“Know?” He asks, his southern drawl making him even cuter.
You roll your eyes, sighing.
He tries to ask what’s wrong until your hands are on his cheeks pulling him closer. Willard closes his eyes at the sensation of your warm… soft… lips colliding against his.
You pull back, staring at him.
He opens his eyes and finds your worried gaze on him, he smiles. “It’s about damn time.”
“Is it now?”
“You bet. Been wanting to do that for a while now.”
“Guess tonight was your lucky night, cowboy.”
He lets out a joking groan. If only you knew what that nickname actually did to him. “Care to dance till dawn with me?”
You place his hat back on his head with a smile, slapping your hand in his. “I thought you’d never ask.”

I Wanna Dance with Somebody Chapter 6
TITLE: I Wanna Dance with Somebody Chapter 6 PAIRING: Willard/OC RATING: T CHAPTER: 6/? SUMMARY: Molly has just moved to Bomont with her older brother Ren after the death of their mother. Where Ren gets into trouble, Molly tries to remain invisible. That is until an awkward country boy tries to befriend her. Can Willard help her regain the confidence she lost? And more importantly, will he help her to dance again?
[A/N - Willard drives a Ford Bronco (totally not because of Rooster) and no one can tell me differently. This chapter also contains discussions of suicide attempts and depression.]
The next afternoon, Molly walked out to the school parking lot and panicked when she didn’t see Ren’s car. She pulled out her phone to see if she had missed a call or text from her brother but there was nothing.
How was she supposed to get home now? She guessed she could walk, but it would be dark by the time she got home.
A beat-up Ford Bronco pulled up in front of her.
“Need a ride?” Willard asked.
Molly nodded.
Willard got out and ran over to the passenger side door. “Can I…?” He reached for her waist and Molly nodded. Willard effortlessly picked her up and set her on the truck seat.
Molly tried not to blush at how strong he was.
He probably helped out on his family’s farm or something like that. Willard climbed back into the driver’s seat and started to pull out of the school parking lot. “You want me to drop you at home?” Willard asked her.
Molly looked over at him and shook her head.
“Where do you wanna go?”
She shrugged.
Willard smiled. “I know where we can go.”
They drove down a dirt road until they came to a gate.
Willard got out and opened it before climbing back into the truck.
There was a barn and a tractor in the distance.
Willard parked the truck and helped Molly out. He walked over to the tractor and started climbing up. “You ever been on a tractor, darlin’?” Willard asked.
Molly shook her head. “Well climb on up.”
Molly climbed up the steps with Willard’s help.
“Better hold onto something,” he told her. He turned the key and hit the gas pedal.
Molly yelped as they started moving and threw her arms around Willard’s neck.
Willard laughed as he drove the tractor towards the barn. He parked it in front of the doors and they climbed down. “I like to go here to think,” he told her.
They went inside the barn and up to the hayloft.
Willard walked over to an ice chest and pulled out two sodas. “They may be a little warm. Sorry.”
Molly took one from him and took a sip.
“One of these days I’m gonna get you to eat in front of me.” Willard sat down next to her, telling her about football practice and funny stories about Woody until his voice became serious.
“Yesterday at the track…you um…you yelled your brother’s name,” Willard told her, “I don’t know if you realized you did it.”
Molly shook her head, playing the tab on her soda can. She’d apparently talked in front of him without knowing it, so it shouldn’t be hard just talking to him right? “Was scared.”
Her voice was soft, but Willard heard it. He smiled. “You talked to me!”
Molly blushed, resisting the urge to chew on her hoodie so she played with her cuffs instead.
“Why do you wear that hoodie everywhere?” Willard asked.
Molly looked up at him.
“You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to.”
But Molly did want to tell him. Somehow.
Molly unzipped her hoodie, revealing a tank top underneath. She slipped it off her arms and showed Willard her wrists.
There were two deep cuts going across them.
“You…you tried to kill yourself?” Willard asked.
Molly nodded. “After my mother died.” Her voice was still soft, but less of a whisper this time.
Willard was beginning to think that was just how it was. Willard smiled hearing her accent. “Your accent is just so cute!”
Molly blushed and covered her face with her hands.
Willard laughed and pulled them away. “Don’t. It’s cute when you blush.”
Molly looked down at her hands with a small smile.
“For what it’s worth…I’m really glad you didn’t kill yourself. ‘Cause then I wouldn’t have gotten the chance to meet you.”
Molly looked up and saw a sincere look on Willard’s face.
Most people were condescending to her when they found out. Telling her things like “Just go outside and take a walk. You’ll feel so much better!” or “Your mother is in a better place. Think about that.” Saying things like that to a depressed person wasn’t helpful.
After her suicide attempt, Molly went into treatment.
Treatment her brother spent every last cent he had to pay for.
She’d come to terms with her mother’s death and was working on getting better. Ren and her could’ve stayed in Chicago since Ren was nearly of age, but he decided that maybe Bomont would be good for her.
Molly surprised both herself and Willard by cupping Willard’s face in her hands and kissing him. It was a short kiss, more of a long of the lips, but no less special.
“Slap me if I’m out of line, but…was that your first kiss?” Willard asked.
Molly nodded. She’d never had a boyfriend or anything even resembling a romantic relationship.
“Well I’m honored, darlin’. I should get you home before it gets too late.”
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
They pulled up the Warnicker house and Willard turned the truck off.
Molly turned and looked at Willard. “Thank you, Willard.”
Willard smiled. He’d never get tired of hearing her voice. “Anytime, darlin’.”
Molly was about to get out of the truck when she turned back to Willard. She leaned forward and kissed him.
Before she could pull away, Willard cupped the back of her head and deepened the kiss.
Molly’s hand came up to grab at the collar of his t-shirt. Molly whined when Willard pulled away.
“Easy there. Not that I don’t wanna continue, but we’re sittin’ in front of your house.”
Molly nodded and moved away from him.
“I’ll see you tomorrow at school,” Willard said. He gently kissed her lips and Molly got out of the truck.
She watched as he pulled back out onto the dirt road until she couldn’t see him anymore. Molly sighed and ran a hand through her hair.
Crushing on and kissing her brother’s best friend? What had she gotten herself into?

I Wanna Dance with Somebody Chapter 5
TITLE: I Wanna Dance with Somebody Chapter 5 PAIRING: Willard/OC RATING: T CHAPTER: 5/? SUMMARY: Molly has just moved to Bomont with her older brother Ren after the death of their mother. Where Ren gets into trouble, Molly tries to remain invisible. That is until an awkward country boy tries to befriend her. Can Willard help her regain the confidence she lost? And more importantly, will he help her to dance again?
Molly had a bad feeling about this.
Chuck Cranston, Ariel’s boyfriend, had summoned Ren to his father’s racetrack.
“If that shithog tries anything, I’m gonna pound him,” Willard said.
Molly chewed on the cuff of her trusted hoodie.
“Hey now, darlin’. I ain’t gonna let nothin’ happen to you or your brother. You know that right?” Willard grabbed her wrist and pulled it away from her mouth.
Molly nodded, looking up into his brown eyes.
“Hey! Twinkle Toes. Watching you the other night, that was real entertaining. We thought we’d invite you out here. Maybe you could put on a show for us,” Chuck said.
“Chuck, didn’t you hear? He’s real into gymnastics,” one of Chuck’s cronies said.
“Gymnastics.” Chuck jumped down from his truck. “Well…I thought only fags were into gymnastics.”
“I thought only assholes still used the word fag,” Ren said.
Chuck laughed. “Touché. Why don’t you try dancing with this?” Chuck climbed up on a tractor and drove it across the racetrack.
There were four buses parked on the racetrack.
“Now…we race these buses every weekend at the Derby Mash-up. We race them in a figure eight, just like this.” He drew an 8 in the dirt. “Two things you gotta worry about. Your corners and your intersection. You fall behind, you’re gonna get hit by the leader. You pull ahead, you just might get slammed by the guy in last place. What do you say, city boy? Ready to race?”
Ren chose the bus with the stuffed animals on it.
Molly waited for Willard and Woody to walk away. “Please be careful. I can’t lose you.”
Ren smiled. “You’ll never lose me, Mols.”
Molly hugged her brother’s neck and kissed his cheek before she went to go wait with the others.
“How do, all you pissants? Welcome to the Cranston Motor Speedway! We got one practice lap before the green flag drops, folks. It’s a three-lap race to the finish line or the last man standing. Gentlemen, start your engines!”
Everyone started their engines and made their way onto the track.
“We’ve got hometown hero Chuck Cranston in Burn in Hell. On the outside, we’ve got the new kid racing in the Fun Zone, Ren MacCormack.”
“Go Fun Zone!” Willard yelled.
“Caroline and Russell are in the back of the pack, ya’ll. Now we’re coming into turn four and getting ready for the green flag.”
Ariel pulled off her shirt and waved it around.
“Green flag, green flag, green flag! And go!”
They all cheered for Ren as the race started.
“They’re coming around turn number one. Fun Zone is loose around the corner. Hang in there! Hang in there! Chuck Cranston takes the lead, with Russell on his ass. Caroline and MacCormack are door to door, they’re battling for third place!”
Caroline rammed her bus into Ren’s.
Molly gasped and grabbed Willard’s hand. Willard looked down seeing her tiny hand in his.
Molly didn’t realize it because she was chewing on the cuff of her hoodie and watching the race with fear in her eyes.
“She is tearing him up! They’re coming out of turn four. Here they come, headed straight for the intersection! Somebody better stop! Somebody better do something!”
Ren slammed on the breaks, but Caroline kept going and smashed into some barrels.
“Caroline is into the wall! Russell and MacCormack are duking it out for second place.”
Russell rammed Ren with his bus and Ren rammed back into him, sending Russell careening into a pole.
Ren ran over the live wires.
“We got fireworks! God bless America!”
Molly broke free of Willard and started running down towards the racetrack.
“Molly!” Willard yelled, running after her.
“Shit,” Woody cursed.
Willard grabbed her around the waist.
“Chuck Cranston holds the lead with one lap to go!”
Ren and Chuck were headed straight for each other.
“Oh, we’ve got us a regular Mexican standoff, folks.”
Molly struggled against Willard’s grip. “Ren!” she screamed.
Willard froze, hearing her voice for the first time. Willard hated that it was filled with fear and terror.
“Who’s gonna back down? Who’s gonna back down? Somebody’s gotta back down.”
Ren gunned it and slammed into the side of Chuck’s bus, which flipped onto its side.
“Chuck is down! MacCormack takes the lead!”
“Fire! He’s on fire!” Woody’s girlfriend yelled.
Woody grabbed a fire extinguisher and climbed onto the bus to try to put out the fire.
The bus was headed for Chuck’s again.
Woody and Ren jumped out of the bus before it crashed into Chuck’s and completely exploded.
Willard let go of Molly and she went running for her brother.
Ren stood up only for Molly to roughly shove him.
Tears were falling from her eyes as he tried to wrap his arms around her.
She fought him and hit his chest with her small fists.
“Hey, hey. It’s okay. I’m okay.”
Molly finally broke down in her brother’s arms and loud sobs left her mouth. She was so close to losing him. She didn’t know if she could take losing another person she loved.
Ren put his cheek on her head as he stroked her hair.
As Willard watched the pair of siblings, he could only hope that one day he heard Molly’s voice the way it was intended to be.
