NOT an Anti-Aarmau rant: Just hear me out.
So I think I figured out why Aarmau isn't my absolute favorite ship on MyStreet. (Disclaimer: I do like Aarmau. It is adorable. And I don't ship Aph or Aaron with anyone else. They're great together. Just not my favorite.) Here is my big controversial statement: Aph and Aaron have it too easy. I know what you're thinking. How the heck can they have it too easy when they just had to be apart for a whole year after Aph was brainwashed by a supervillain archetype (because that's all Ein is now, but that's a whole 'nother proverbial can of worms) and Aaron, yknow, almost died? Well, on the outside, yeah, they can have it pretty rough. They have outside issues they need to overcome every once in a while, but to be fair those issues are pretty big. My problem with Aarmau is that they have very very very few internal issues. They don't fight very much. They don't disagree very much. Heck, we rarely see them talk about anything really serious. They exist to be the perfect couple, right? Why would they fight about stuff? Perfect couples don't fight, right? Wrong on both accounts. A. There is no such thing as a perfect couple. And B. All couples fight. I'm not talking about screaming matches and life-altering brawls. I'm talking about heated discussions about leaving the toilet seat up or "Please for the love of God pick up your stupid sock and put it in the hamper." Little stuff that won't break the relationship, but allow for negative emotions (which everyone has, perfect spouse or not) to be communicated. Aph and Aaron never fight. Now, that's all well and dandy if they were intended to be the solid relationship that everyone looks on and wants to emulate. Which I think is what Jess is going for. (Plus art reflects life. I'm sure Jess and Jason feel a certain closeness to Aph and Aaron and who wants to see characters based on you and your spouse, however loosely, airing dirty laundry?) But the thing is that Aarmau isn't just a cute ship for Kawaii~Chan and viewers to fangirl over. It is the main focus of the series. And as the main focus, it needs to move and grow and change in order to stay interesting. Externally (which Bluejay Studios has on lock, great job on that) and internally (which needs a little work). Aph keeps repeating in the new episode that she just hopes Aaron hasn't changed or now finds her unattractive, etc. Which would be very interesting if we didn't already know that everything is going to be fine between them no matter what. Aaron will never change against Aph. And Aph will always be attractive to Aaron. Because nothing internal every happens to them. All their issues are ALWAYS external. The world is trying to break them, but they just are too much in love. Romantic as heck, but not particularly interesting to watch as a multi-season series. Don't get me wrong, I adore Aarmau. I think it's sweet and adorable and, yes, I shed a tear when they met again in the new season. I support the ship. I think it's great. But it is not written to be a main focus ship. The way it is written currently, it is written to be a side story ship that weaves it's way into the main story. (Focussing on who knows? We certainly have enough interesting characters that we never really spend time with since there are so many. But that's a rant for another time.)
