the first time dina brings it up they’re lying and bed talking and she just goes for it

dina: ellie, have you ever thought about having a kid?

ellie, half asleep: what, like... on your farm?

i think dina is the kind of person who always wanted to have children eventually, she just expected in canon that it would be a lot further in the future.  ellie on the other hand... not so much

as a kid she never really thought it would be possible for her, and then when she grew up there were just way too many worries.  the last thing she wants is to have a kid and mess them up, and she... would definitely mess them up.  for a long time she thought she was just way too damaged to be a parent

once she’s able to work through it properly, though, she’s surprised to find that she does kind of like the idea.  quite a lot, actually.  with dina, it almost seems possible, and so she agrees

one of the things she really thinks hard about is joel and her, and the way he changed her life.  he might not be around to give her advice anymore, but he permanently changed her for the better and everything she does with this kid is gonna be based on what he taught her

she’s already daydreaming of taking them to her favourite museum and teaching them guitar

actually, by the time ellie comes around to the idea, she’s even more in love with it than dina is

they’d definitely wait a while to be sure they’re both stable and in a place where having a kid would be safe/wouldn’t put any financial or mental strain on them that they couldn’t handle

i don’t know anything about ivf/sperm donation/how to get pregnant beyond the typical way lol, so i’ll just say it takes a couple tries before it works.  they have a few little false victories and even when it happens, dina isn’t totally sure at first

she gets a positive test back while ellie isn’t home and just cries for like a half-hour straight before being able to do anything else

and then she realizes that because ellie doesn’t know, she gets to tell her.  and that’s gonna be fun

she can’t wait too long ofc, ellie’s going to catch onto why she’s sick all the time and totally stopped smoking/drinking soon enough, so she jumps right into planning how to tell her

she really wants to make it a joke at first, but that feels kind of weird for something this big.  plus if she scares ellie with this that would be.  bad lmao

at one point she tries to get ellie to guess.  it takes two entire days to even get close to the point and dina just completely gives up on THAT cute idea.  not her fault she married a dumbass

so then dina realizes she has the opportunity to get it on VIDEO and oh shit that’s even BETTER

but it does mean she needs an actual specific Moment

so what she ends up doing in the end is a little bit funny and genuine at the same time.  she puts in a lot of weird online orders for a week or so and ellie doesn’t really question it.  it’s dina so she has some kind of plan here, she trusts her completely :)

dina hides a camera nearby and pulls out a gift box?  and asks ellie to come over (where the camera can see her!!  muahahaha!)

so ellie starts opening her gift and it’s pretty cool!  a little tiny sketchbook, that’ll be cool for doing really quick life sketches

there’s a vcr tape (!!) of jurassic park (which HOW did dina even get that... also when are they ever gonna use it lol) and handwritten “coupons” for one (1) williams-redacted movie night <3

a very soft fluffy blanket- ellie usually prefers her weighted one bc it’s better if she has a panic attack/nightmare, but she’s quick to suggest that she and dina can share this one for the couch :)

guitar picks- she does scoff a little at that bc she doesn’t use picks, picks are for WEAKLINGS who only play CHORDS, but dina gets her to keep going anyways lol

a... black baby onesie?

ellie gives her a look at that one, but remarks that it’ll be really cute for when they have one.  dina just.  rolls her eyes when she’s not looking

dina has to show her that the onesie has a white picture on it- a little picture of a spaceship with “co-pilot” written underneath, and aw that is really cute actually

and underneath that there is a black hoodie with a space doodle reading “pilot”.  she does actually tear up a little at that bc that’s REALLY cute and dina has to stop her while she’s kissing her and tell her there’s something else in the box too

so she pulls the rest of the wrapping paper out

and there’s the positive pregnancy test.

“... dina, what?”

“what do you think?”

“no way- oh my god-”

now ellie’s crying this time, and that makes dina start crying, and ellie keeps asking her if she’s sure over and over until dina kisses her to make her shut up

at some point when they’ve both calmed down a little, ellie asks why she’s getting all these gifts if dina’s the one who’s pregnant, and dina explains that they’re for her and the baby

the sketchbook is just for ellie, but dina thought she’d probably draw the baby, since she draws literally everything else, and it’s smart to have something small and portable in case she has to drop it fast to help them out

the tape is really for decoration, but the movie night is for the whole family to watch together

the blanket for whoever wants cuddle time <3

the picks for her to teach the baby to play (once they have bigger hands, of course.  and they stop pooping their pants all the time)

and ofc the clothes so ellie and the kid can match

aaaaand ellie’s bawling again.  dina has to get up and turn the camera off and she’s a little betrayed that dina caught her being a total sap lmao.  makes her promise to just keep that video for them

(she lets dina send it around to some friends later, though.  big fucking mistake to send it to jesse and his parents, she gets cyberbullied so hard by jesse for it the minute he’s done congratulating them)

some months later, dina’s favourite photo of them is taken.  she’s passed out in the hospital bed under a certain fluffy blanket, so of course she doesn’t remember it, but the focus is really on ellie and their son

(they have a son, and neither of them can fully believe it.)

she’s curled up in the chair next to dina, pencil and sketchbook in hand, a black hoodie and the rattiest pair of jeans on, and she’s studying baby jj, asleep on dina’s chest, with a ridiculous amount of love

(ellie’s favourite is the one from a few hours later that she’d taken herself on her phone’s shitty camera.  dina’s awake by then, and she and ellie are grinning like idiots, but the best part?  jj is smiling in it too- all gums and chubby little cheeks, and he’s the cutest baby she’s ever seen.)
