You telling them you were pregnant - how theyâd react prompt - will Halstead x female reader
Will Halstead headcanons - finding out youâre pregnant
First of all, that man wants to be a father. So bad. He hasnât always known it but seeing so many kids in his job and how sweet they are, heâs wanted to be a dad now for a while.
After a few years of dating and a few months after you got married it came up and you danced on when you wanted to plan it since obviously it was a big thing.
Itâs around his birthday and Christmas, youâd been feeling eh recently and decided to just double check that you werenât getting sick. So you take a test and find out that you are in fact, pregnant.
And so the planning starts. How to tell him, how to get things set up, who else to tell, when. All of it. And you decide on a simple thing. Birthday present with the test and a simple baby onesie in it.
Heâs at work but when he gets home he realizes you have something for him since youâre terrible at keeping secrets and such to yourself.
Will would probably cry??? Honestly??? Like just fully overjoyed and so happy that you guys were going to have your own family. And heâs have a family in chicago again.
And then the rest of that night is spent with him planning out the babyâs room and stuff.
The next morning is him excitedly wanting to start thinking of baby names so âwe donât think of some crappy one last second because our baby deserves better than thatâ
So basically heâd be all happy and silly and excited because he wants to be the best father ever, especially since his dad wasnât all that.

Just went to get some coffee and the barista wanted to make sure Iâm good with 4 shots in the latte bc I asked for an extra shot. I said yes bc I have finals and research and papers to do. Then, she had another shot when she was done and asked if I wanted it. So, needless to say, I have 5 shots of espresso in my PSL and have already had a cup of coffee today.
I can only imagine how this would go down via text with the Halstead siblings.
Y/N: Iâm drowning in hw so I got a pumpkin spice latte with 5 shots of espresso in it âď¸đ
Will: 5 SHOTS?!?! ARE YOU CRAZY?!?
Y/N: Will, Iâm fine. If I start feeling it, Iâll save the rest for tomorrow.
Jay: Didnât you tell me you stayed up for almost 72 hours straight when you were studying for boards? How much coffee you have then, huh? đ¤
Will: Thatâs beside the point. This is about Y/N, not me.
Jay: Well, Iâm making it about you instead.
Will: I seem to recall one time you called me freaking out bc you drank 3 energy drinks in one day and could, and I quote, âsee colors and feel every fucking beat of my heart, Willâ.
Y/N: JAY! YOU TOLD ME I CANâT HAVE ENERGY DRINKS, BUT YOU CAN?!?!
Jay: And why do you think I said that?
Will: Jay, stop egging her on and let her go study.
Y/N: Yeah. Let me go study with my 5 shots of espresso *turns group chat on mute and puts phone on dnd*

When we fall | Part 3
Warnings (for all parts):Â Fluff, angst, description of injuries and blood, gun use, cursing, probably unaccurate policing/medicine
Summary:Â You moved to Chicago to start a new life. Working as a doctor alongside your brother Connor you make new friends and although you swore to yourself not to let any man in your life at least for a while, your promises fail when you lock eyes with a handsome stranger in a bar.
Words:Â 6k
Pairing: Jay Halstead x Doctor!Rhodes!reader
A/N:Â And here is the last part of the short series. The events are inspired by a chicago med ep. I really hope you enjoyed it :)
Part 1 | Part 2
âWeâll take care of you and your daughter.â You smiled at your patient reassuringly, noticing someone moving towards you in corner of your eye. Turning your head you saw a man with tousled hair standing at the threshold, his eyes almost hazy as his gaze skipped around the room.
âWhereâs Leah?!â, he barked out, his eyes only focused on your patient. Your gaze flickered towards her, taking in the fear in her eyes and the gasp that left her lips. âJake? How did you find us here?â, she whispered, oblivion dripping from her voice.
âDid you really think you could just leave and take our daughter with you? Sheâs my daughter too!â He took a threatening step closer, eyes narrowed. âNow, where is she?!â
Your patientâs breathing had quickened and a look at the heart monitor told you she was about to have a panic attack. âSir, I need you to calm down and take a step backâ, you said forcefully, drawing his attention on you. His eyes jumped to you, anger brimming in them.
âLike hell I will! Iâm taking my wife and my kid home now!â Your eyes flickered towards the nurse, giving her a little nod to signal her to call the security service, before you met his again. âI can see youâre upset. But your wife and your daughter are sick. They need treatment and rest-â
âShut up!â You flinched as he yelled at you, his loud voice alarming multiple people around you. âEverything okay in here?â Will appeared at the door, his eyes scanning the room until they landed at yours, staying there as he waited for an honest answer.
The man shook his head furiously, but he took a step back. You almost exhaled in relief. âI want to see my daughter! Now!â, he demanded, but before anyone could gave him an answer, he turned and ripped open the curtain to the next room.
You heard squeals, alarmed voices mixing with the sound of another curtain being ripped open. âSir, I need you to leave now!â Will leaned forward to grab the manâs shoulder when suddenly he yanked out a gun, twisting around and pointing it right at Willâs chest.
A gasp escaped you as you watched Will stumble back, his hands raised. âLook man, weâre just trying to help, okay?â But the man, Jake, didnât seem to hear any of it, his eyes filled with hatred and something that scared you even more; desperation and determination. A dangerous combination.
He wouldnât leave until he got what he wanted.
âWhatâs going on here?â You heard Connorâs voice, saw him step out of a patientâs room and move towards the intruder. From his angle he couldnât see the gun, couldnât know the severity of the situation.
âConnor, no!â Your legs moved forward at the same time as the man turned around, the gun pointed at your brother. Everything seemed to happen so fast and in slow-motion at once as your body reacted purely on instinct, the fear for your brother carrying you forward.
You didnât know if he meant to pull the trigger or if it was out of reflex, but you had no time to think about it as a shot rang out.
You would have screamed, but no sound left your mouth as the impact hit you, sending your body tumbling backwards until it hit the wall. Only moments before your feet had carried you forward, but now they suddenly couldnât take your weight anymore, your body sinking to the ground.
Around you screams were erupting, but they sounded drowned out, as if you were underwater. Your name was being called, but it all seemed to blend into a haze.
You tried to peek at where you felt a sudden pressure in your body, shock mixing with confusion as you saw blood staining your clothes. Just seconds ago you had been standing in a patientâs room and now you were on the ground, your own blood pooling around your feet. It didnât make sense.
From the periphery of your eye you saw people running. Some moved towards you, but most of them the opposite way. Away. They were running away.
And they were pushing, tripping, falling over each other. âPut down the gun!â You saw one of the security men approach, his own gun drawn at the attacker. Another shot cut through the atmosphere, but to your horror it was the security man that fell, blood splattering from a wound to his front.
âEveryone just back off!â
Jakeâs sharp voice snapped you out of your shock and all at once reality hit you. Pain sank in, slowly at first and then in a stream of hot sensations. Tears formed in your eyes at the burning pain and you grit your teeth, trying to will it away, because you knew you needed to be aware of what happened next.
Lifting your head slightly you found the ER had mostly cleared out, only a few people remaining. Among them were Will and Connor, both of their bodiesâ turned towards you in a way that suggested they had tried to get to you, their hands raised.
âJust let me get to my sister, okay? Iâm a doctor and she needs help.â You stared at Connor, seeing the panic he tried to restrain as he appealed to the man reasonably. Jakeâs eyes flickered towards you, hesitance written over his face.
âYou didnât want this to happen, do you?â Connor asked, his voice strained. âSo let me make this better. Let me help.â He was pleading now and another wave of panic filled you as you realized he was only mere seconds away from doing something reckless.
For a moment you thought you were going to throw up from the sickness that cursed through your body, but you feared you wouldnât even be able to move your body in the state you were in.
Jake let out a frustrated breath, gesturing towards you with his gun. âOkay. Okay!â Connor rushed over to you immediately, his concerned eyes meeting yours. âAre you okay? How do you feel? Can you tell me where youâve been hit?â
You tried to follow his questions, your mind spinning. Instead of an answer you let out a groan as Connor found your wound, pressing down on it. âWe need to stop the bleeding.â
Now that he was here by your side a weakness took over your body and you welcomed it. Welcomed the dark, because it felt easier to lean into it than fight it. But it never swallowed you. As much as you wished you could just pass out, the pain didnât end, keeping you caged in your body.
You didnât need to ask him how serious your condition was. The urgency in Connorâs movement alone was enough for you to confirm it was bad, the seeping hot pain a further indicator.
You saw Jake still waving his gun around, speaking in an animated tone with Will and Maggie. To your left someone had crouched down next to the security guard and you felt a flicker of relief when you saw it was Ethan.
A cough rose up your throat and your body shook, sending an ache through you. When you wiped your mouth you noticed your skin had turned red.
âNo, no, noâ, your brother whispered, his eyes frantic. âConnorâ, you said, your voice a little hoarse. He paused for a moment, both of you locking eyes in a quiet exchange. âIâm scaredâ, you whispered, feeling a few tears escape your eyes.
Connor swallowed, his eyes filled with desperation. âI knowâ, he leaned closer, âBut you will be okay. I will fix it, okay?.â
You nodded slowly, needing to cling to his words. To hold onto the reminder that you would be okay. That your life wasnât over when you hadnât even started fully living yet.
It didnât make sense. You had woken up a few minutes before your alarm clock, had been in an oddly good mood as you had gotten ready for work and even your patients had been unusually patient and grateful. Today was a good day. Not a day that could turn into such a catastrophe in the blink of an eye.
This didnât happen. Maybe in books or on tv. But not here, not to people like you.
âHey!â Dr. Goodwin appeared in your vision, bending down to Connor and you. âWhatâs the status?â You hadnât seen her before, but knowing she was here already gave you a sparkle of hope. As the hospitalâs executive director it was her job to find solutions, even in the face of the worst possible events. She would get them out of here, somehow.
âSheâs been shot in the abdomen. No exit wound so the bullet is still inside. I believe sheâs bleeding internally.â
You saw a shadow cloud Dr. Goodwinâs as she looked at you and it was as if you could see the wheels in her head turning as she assessed the situation.
âWhatâs going on?â, you asked weakly, needing to know if the others were safe. âMr. Whitman demands to take his wife and daughter and leave. I was on the phone with the Chicago police department. They told me heâs got a history of domestic abuse and violence. The wife filed a report on him and moved states to get him out of her life.â
âAnd he found her now.â You gulped, slowly piecing the pieces together. Dr. Goodwin nodded, graveness written over her face. âSo whatâs the plan?â It was Connor, his voice urgent.
Dr. Goodwin sighed, taking off her glasses and pinching the brick of her nose. You had never seen her like this, so defeated, and it filled you with unease.
âThe police is here and a squad team too. But there is no way we can let them inside or get someone outside right now without Mr. Whitman noticing. Right now they are preparing for getting just one person in. Unarmed.â
âWhat help is that going to be?â Connor let out a scoff and it annoyed you how quick to judge he was, and more so, that you agreed with him. What would another person talking to Jake change?
âIt would be a trained officer, who has the experience and skills to deal with these kind of high pressure situations. The plan would be for him to try and talk to Mr. Whitman first and if thatâs not effective either, assess the situation and make a move or get back to the team and share valuable information with them.â
You could see Connor still shaking his head, but Dr. Goodwin stood again. âItâs the only thing Mr. Whitman has agreed to. You know I would prefer to get everyone else out, but he has been clear. If one person leaves, he is going to make use of his gun again.â
âAnd what are we supposed to do now? Just wait?â
âConnorâ, you tried to calm him, but his eyes snapped to yours. âWe need an OR now! Monique!â The blonde nurse standing next to Ethan looked over. You could see the fear written all over her face. âCan you take over for a moment?â
She gave a nod, her eyes flickering to Jake who didnât let them out of sight. Crouching down next to you the two quickly exchanged their hands applying pressure onto your wound, the sensation making you let out a groan.
But you pushed away the pain, trying to focus on Connor. âWhat are you doing?â, you hissed as you watched him get up, wishing you could hold him back.
âDr. Rhodes, we should wait for the officer to arrive. Right now the situation is stable and I canât risk-â âStable? Is that what you call this?â Connor pushed himself fully up now, the movement catching Jakeâs eye.
âSit back down!â But Connor lifted his hands, taking a cautious step forward. âMy sister likely suffers from an internal bleeding. We need an OR to-â âNo! Nobody goes anywhere!â
Connorâs face fell, his shoulders sinking, but he took another step forward. The grip the fear had around your heart tightened. âPlease, I need to stop the bleeding. You donât want her to die, right?â
Jake stared at you for a moment before his attention was back on your brother. âI just want my daughter and my wife!â
âAnd we get that. We do. But she-â, he turned halfway towards you, his eyes not leaving Jake for a second, âhas nothing to do with this. Let me save her life.â
âI said no one goes anywhere! You save her here or you donât save her at all. Itâs on you!â
You watched Connor open his mouth again, but before he could say another word Jake stepped forward, his gun pointed directly at his chest.
âDo I look like someone whoâs joking?!â, he yelled, making everyone around him flinch. Connor made himself a little smaller, taking a small step backwards while shaking his head. âYeah, so you better listen to what Iâm saying! No get your ass back down there!â
You didnât have the heart to watch Connor when he returned to you, to see the defeat and hopeless on his face. The fear.
He had barely sat down again when another turmoil broke loose, gaining everyoneâs attention. It had to be the officer Jake had allowed in, though you didnât want to know what he would get in return for the favour.
Although you didnât feel much hope regarding the plan, you trusted the police to make the right choice. This couldnât be their first hostage situation, so they knew what to do, right?
What you hadnât anticipated was that the officer coming in could be someone you knew. Someone you knew very well.
Jay.
No.
You blinked a few times, but it was unmistakably him.
His voice. His physique.
A touch at your hand drew your attention away from him for a moment and you noticed Monique had reached for it. Only now you saw you had balled your hand into a fist, all the tension left in your body visible in that one grip. Slowly she loosened it, taking your hand into hers instead and squeezing it in reassurance.
You didnât know the young nurse so well- she was a little more on the reserved and quiet side- but the gesture filled you with deep gratitude, giving you the strength to look up again and face this new reality.
Jay hadnât noticed you yet, his whole focus on calming Jake enough to make an uneventful entrance. When he seemed confident in the situation he scanned the room, assessing the conditions they were dealing with.
He did it with a professional calmness you wished you could have right now, his face only giving away his emotion when they fell on his brother. âHey, man. You alright?â
He stepped forward, avoiding any rapid movements and Will nodded. âIâm okay. But Mrs. Kaden is in a bad condition. The stress on top of her physical state worries me.â
He said something else, but he had lowered his voice that it was impossible for you to understand anything. Jay nodded. âWhat about the two victims?â
âThe security guard got hit at the shoulder. Heâs stable.â âAnd the other one?â Will shook his head, his eyes filled with sadness. âSheâs over there with Connor. It doesnât look good, Jay.â
It was strange, listening to them and knowing they were talking about you. Waiting for the moment Jayâs eyes fell upon you.
You didnât know what kind of reaction you were anticipating, but nothing could have prepared you for the utter shock that filled Jayâs face as he looked at you.
You watched him do a double take, every trace of his confidence and expressionlessness gone, replaced by a turmoil of emotions. He almost lunged forward, stopping himself when Jakeâs warning voice filled the air.
You could see Connorâs questioning gaze on you, but you were focused fully on Jay as he made his way over to you with careful movements.
When he crouched down in front of you, he was close enough for you to see a hint of fear in his eyes. âWhat happened?â
Your petty argument, the distance, it all seemed forgotten as you stared at him, not strong enough to hide your own fear. âI got shot.â
Although it was obvious, it was the first time you had said the words out loud, had acknowledged the fact that this was really happening to you. It felt surreal, even with the burning pain spreading through your body, making it impossible to keep your composure.
Jayâs eyes softened as he heard your husky voice, the effort it took you to form the words another sign how bad your current shape was. For a moment his eyes drifted over your body, his face twisting in pain as he stared at your blood, before he looked up again.
âHe said heâs going to kill us if he doesnât walk out of here with his wife and his kid.â Jay nodded, his lips pressed into a thin line. âI know.â
âBut- youâre here nowâŚright?â
âYeah, I am.â Jay tried to force an encouraging smile on his face, but you knew him well enough to know it was strained.
âYouâre hereâ, you repeated relieved, your voice almost giving up at the end and you coughed. Jay stared at you, his eyes a little widened, his pupils dilated in fear.
He was scared. For you. He was scared for you.
âHer pulse is up to 120 and sheâs sweating.â It was Monique and you saw her exchange a look with Connor. âWhatâs her condition?â Jay was talking to Connor now, as if he had only now realized he was there.
Under different circumstances your brother wouldnât have let go what had just happened right in front of his eyes. He would have teased you until you would have told him the truth about Jay and you. But now he did, just like that, knowing there was no time for it as yours was running out.
The thought sent another wave of fear through your body, but with the hot pain and the growing weakness you felt too overwhelmed to do anything about it. So you tried to focus on the feeling of Moniqueâs hand holding yours, on Jayâs closeness and your brotherâs words.
âThe bullet likely caused internal bleeding. Sheâs losing too much blood.â Connor almost ran a hand over his face like he always did when he was stressed, stopping himself when he saw your blood on his hands.
âWhat do you need?â
âI need an OR. I need to find the bleeding and stop it.â His voice was a mix of desperation and determination and Jay listened intensely. His mask of professionalism was back in place, the sight having something grounding to it in the midst of this chaos, but you could detect a few flaws where his emotions threatened to pour in.
âIâm here to negotiateâ, he began, eyes cast towards Jake, continuing lowly, âbut really I think this will take a different ending.â
You wanted to ask him what that meant, but it seemed too difficult and you were forced to watch him get up instead. As Connor tried to get up too you tried to catch his wrist. You failed, but the movement still let him pause.
âDonât go, pleaseâ, you whispered, your body shaking. You wished you could stop it, but you had lost all control over it, and when had it become so cold?
You felt Jayâs eyes on you as Connor leaned down to you, placing his hands on the sides of your face. âYouâre sweating and your pulse is way up. Your skin is ice cold and youâre pale. I donât need to tell you what that means. We need to do something now.â
You felt tears run down your cheeks as you tried to shake your head, silently pleading him to stay. He had already risked it with Jake once. What would he do when Connor tried it again and this time he wouldnât give up?
âIâm coming back.â Connor stroked your cheek once before pressing a kiss against your forehead. Then he was gone, his touch only a faint memory as your head sank back against the wall.
As the two walked away from you they blurred into nothing more than silhouettes. Muffled voices filled your ears, but they were too drowned out for you to understand anything. Monique was speaking to you too, the level of her tone indicating she was saying something to soothe you, but her words never reached you either.
A part of you wanted to pass out. As much as you wanted to know what happened, with Connor and Jay not by your side any longer all your fight had left you. The pain felt unbearable now, as if someone had lit your body on fire and the flames were eating at you, slowly burning you alive.
Your throat was closing and it was getting hard to breathe. Every once in a while you choked on air, raspy coughs escaping your mouth. And it was so cold. Colder than the winter in Chicago.
The last sound you heard before the darkness finally swallowed you was a gunshot.
-
The first thing you felt when you woke was the heaviness of your body, as if an invisible weight had been placed upon you.
You could hear the steady beeping of a monitor, the sound having something reassuring to it. You listened to it for a while, too tired to pull yourself out of the haze yet.
But then the events of the day came crashing back to you, the image of Jay and Connor both leaving your side to get Jake to let them save you. The sound of a gun going off.
You blinked your eyes open, your vision only slowly clearing. But eventually it sharpened, revealing the inside of a hospital room.
You werenât surprised at the sight, but you still paused when you took in the IV you were hooked upon. âLook whoâs awake.â
Turning your head you found April at the door, a smile on her lips. But you could see it wasnât as effortless as usual and you wondered where she had been when all of it had happened.
Had she gotten out, left to wonder about Ethanâs and everyone elseâs wellbeing? Or had she been hiding in one of the other patient rooms?
âHow are you feeling?â She stepped into the room, beginning her check-up on you. You let her do it, squinting when she shone a bright light in your eyes. âIâve felt better beforeâ, you answered truthfully, growing slightly more aware or the pressure in your abdomen.
At least it didnât hurt yet. You didnât want to think of the moment the pain meds would wear off.
âWhereâs my brother?â April had finished her tests, squeezing your hand. âHeâs still in the hospital. I told him to go home and get some rest, but he insisted on staying.â
April shook her head, clearly disapproving of your brotherâs choices. âBut I did get him to take a shower. He should be in the on-call rooms right now. Do you want me to go and get him?â
You thought about it for a moment. âNo, let him sleep. Itâs been a hell of a day for him too.â
April nodded, a small smile on her lips. âWhat about detective Halstead? Do you want me to send him home too?â
You stared at her in surprise. âHeâs still here? Wait- how much time passed?â
â5 hours. And yes, heâs here. Actually, he just got himself a coffee. I might have forgotten to mention how disgusting the one from the vending machine is.â
âYouâre evil.â You narrowed your eyes at her, chuckling. April shrugged. âCanât have anyone know our secrets. So what is it with you and the other Halstead. Is he the one youâve been texting this whole time?â
You hesitated, ready to deny her words, because you were used to keeping it a secret. But you werenât sure that was possible after today, and honestly it all seemed so unimportant know that you had almost lost your life.
âWe were. But things are kind of- complicated between us so Iâm not sure where weâre standing.â
âWellâ, April walked towards the door, a smile on her lips, âwhatever it is it canât be so serious. You should have seen the way he looked at you when you came out of surgery.â
Your chest tightened as a wave of emotions flooded you. âHe really stayed for me?â
April grinned. âHe might have claimed there to be paperwork at first. And then that he wanted to look after his brother. But Will went home hours ago and guess who spend the whole time of your surgery pacing the waiting room.â
April winked at you. âIâm going to search for Ethan now. I wanted to wait for you to wake up before leaving.â
Warmth filled you and you had to blink away the tears, touched by everyoneâs concern for you. But the mention of Ethanâs name had also reminded you that you hadnât been the only one hurt today.
âIs everyone okay? The security guard, did he make it?â
âOh yeah, weâre all okay.â Before she could say another word someone else appeared in the doorway and April left, a knowing smile on her lips.
âHey.â You didnât think you had ever heard Jay speak so softly. It made you want to pull him close and snuggle up beside him, be safe in his arms and forget everything else.
âHeyâ, you said, trying to sit up a little, but realizing it was a pointless mission.
You supressed a grin when you noticed the coffee cup in his hand, but Jay had followed your gaze, lifting it up. âThatâs the worst coffee Iâve ever hadâ, he declared, âand weâve only got a new machine at the precinct last year.â
You chuckled lightly. âWe have the good one hidden in the break room. But donât tell anyone Iâve told you that.â
Jay grinned. âYour secretâs safe with me.â Pulling a chair to your bedside and setting his cup on the nightstand he sat next to you, his eyes flickering over your face.
âI prefer when I am the one taking the bullet.â
He smiled, but it was a sad smile, the stress from the past hours visible on his face. âWhat can I say? You made it seem so effortless.â
But Jay didnât seem amused, his eyes heavy. âWhen I heard about the hostage situation, I hoped you werenât on shift. I called you, but you didnât pick up.â He blew out a breath.
âAnd my brother didnât either so-â He ran a hand over his face. âItâs why I needed to be the one going in. I needed to know if you were okay.â
âAnd they let you?â Although you knew they had, you were surprised Jay had been chosen. You didnât doubt his capability as a cop, but just like you werenât allowed to be on a personal case you had believed Jayâs involvement would have been a red flag as well.
âNot at first, no. But I was very convincing. And Voightâs not too strict about the rules anyway.â
You didnât want to imagine the length Jay might have gone to, to get what he wanted. Especially with Voight, who didnât appreciate anyone speaking up against him or acting out of line.
You stirred a little, your body beginning to ache. âWhat happened after I passed out?â
Jayâs brows drew together and you could see the graveness in his eyes. âHe wouldnât let you go.â His jaw hardened. âLike I said, negotiations didnât work with him.â
âDoes that meanâŚ-â, you trailed of, your heart heavy. Jay gritted his teeth. âOur backup plan was for me to lead him somewhere the squat team could take the shot.â
âSo heâs dead now?â You didnât know what to feel when Jay nodded his head once. Certainly not regret, not after what he had done, but there was no relief either. Instead you just felt numb, like the turmoil of emotions you had experienced in the past hours had left you completely empty.
âAnd the mother and her kid?â âThey are okay.â Jay seemed as relieved to deliver those news as you felt and for the first you truly allowed yourself to take a big exhale. âAs okay as they can be under these circumstances.â
âHow could he even walk in with a gun?â You shook your head in disbelief, wishing for answers you know you would never get. âThe hospitalâs head launched an investigationâ, Jay told you and you imagined the stress Dr. Goodwin must be facing even now that it was over.
âThatâs good I guessâ, you muttered. âYeah.â But Jay seemed somewhere else with his thoughts and for a moment you feared he would go back to being distanced towards you.
But to your surprise he leaned forward, his hand almost touching yours on the bed. âWhat happened?â
You scrunched up your nose in confusion. âTo you. What happened to you? How did you get shot?â
You took a deep breath, knowing you would have to face that question again once Connor was up. He would be upset, but as much as you regretted your action, wished things had gone differently, you couldnât say it had been a mistake. Not if you had prevented something worse, like a bullet hitting your brother.
âIt all happened so fast.â You closed your eyes, trying to recall the moment. But your memories were hazy, the images blurry, only in fragments.
âI saw Connor coming out of a patientâs room and he- he couldnât see the gun. Jake would have shot him. He- I- I had to do something.â
When you opened your eyes again you saw Jayâs green eyes staring intensely at you, his brows furrowed deeply.
A shadow covered his face, but it vanished before you could ask about it.
âSo youâd rather get yourself killed?â It sounded a little accusing and your face fell, anger filling you. âDonât you think I know that now? But you would have done the same for Will. I know you would have.â
Jay shifted. âThatâs differentâ, he said, but you tilted your head at him. âIâm too tired for that conversation.â
Jay looked hurt and disappointed, but you didnât regret your words. You couldnât take his arguments now, not now when you were still coming to terms with the reality that you had almost lost your life.
âI didnât know you were so selfless. I mean-â, Jay rubbed the back of his head, âI knew, because of your job and how you treat your patients, but taking a bullet for someone else? I didnât know you were a hero.â
He was smiling now, trying to loosen the atmosphere, but this words had the opposite effect on you. âIâm notâ, you said quietly. âI didnât even mean to do that. My body just- reacted. Thatâs not bravery or selflessness.â
This time Jay touched your hand, the unexpected gesture drawing your attention back to him. âItâs always an instinct. It happens too quickly for anyone to make a conscious decision. It can be a reflex and still be brave. Because you didnât hesitate.â
You hadnât thought of it like that before and you started at him, your thoughts swirling in your brain as the desire to be close to him clouded your mind once more.
âDoes it ever get easier?â You blinked, a little scared to be so vulnerable in front of him. âOn tv they are fine after that. They are so cool about it. But what if Iâm not fine? What if that was probably the worst thing that ever happened to me and Iâm so scared?â
You bit your lip, forcing back the tears. But the truth was you werenât ready to die yet. And coming so close to death had left its marks on you. You could feel it everywhere, as you gazed around the room, took in all the sensations you could feel, looked at Jay beside you. It was all so much.
âHey.â Jay squeezed your hand. âThatâs acting. Itâs fake. You almost died. Youâre not supposed to be fine right now.â
A tear escaped your eye and you wiped at it, trying not to be furious at yourself for losing your composure in front of Jay. âI donât know how you do it. Getting shot at and still running towards danger and not away.â
Jay seemed sheepish out of a sudden, no hint of his usual confidence and wit. âItâs my job. Just like I could never do what you do.â You felt yourself smile a little, his recognition making you feel a little less small in the hospital bed. âAnd sometimes there are- things that happen on this job that you donât just get over. We all have things weâre dealing with. Even I.â
Now you squeezed his hand, trying to show him you were there if he ever needed to talk to someone. Jay looked at you with gratitude in his eyes. He understood, even without words.
Silence settled in, but it didnât feel uncomfortable. There came no pressure to come up with something to say, no need to say anything at all and you could see it was the same for Jay, his thoughts drifting.
âSo Connor huh?â
You hadnât expected the question, drawing your brows together. âWhat?â
Jay licked his lips, inhaling. âI saw you two together. And then today-â, he trailed off, gazing to the side as he collected himself.
âI donât know what you saw-â, you began, but Jay raised a hand. âDonât deny it. Iâm not blind. Itâs obvious how much you care for each other.â
You started at him, rendered speechless as you tried to imagine what he could have seen. But it didnât matter, because Jay was- âYouâre jealous!â
He twisted in his chair, pulling his hand away. âIâm not jealousâ, he said, but you shook your head, grinning. âYes, you are.â
Annoyance flashed over his face. âI just donât like to be played with.â Your smile faded a little, but the relief you felt only grew as your slowly began to piece it all together.
âThatâs why you acted so cold towards me out of a sudden. You saw me and Connor and you thought-â You almost let out a laugh, only suppressing it as you took in Jayâs unamused expression.
âWell detective Halstead, Connor is my brother.â
You watched with delight how his face turned into confusion, surprise and then hope. âHeâs your brotherâ, he repeated in disbelief and you nodded. âI told you I came to Chicago, because I have family here.â
Jay let out a groan, the previous tension melting from his body as your words sank in. âBut Will-â, he paused, clearly rethinking something his brother had said to him, âthat bastard. When I saw you together I asked him about you and he warned me not to try anything, because of Connor. He never thought to mention once that heâs your brother.â
âYou asked Will about me?â
Jay narrowed his eyes playfully. âThatâs what youâre concerned about?â
You let out a laugh. âNot concerned, no. I just- you asked your brother about me.â
Jay raised his brow. âWhy is that so hard to believe? I mean, you asked him about me too.â
Your face flushed. âI did not!â
âYes, you did!â Jay chuckled, clearly enjoying your embarrassment. âWill told me about it. Itâs why he got so suspicious so fast when I brought you up.â
âAnd then he mentioned Connor and you figured-â âhe said that if I tried anything with you I would have to deal with Connor Rhodes. And itâs not like you two have the same last name.â
âDifferent momsâ, you explained and he sighed. âI should have just talked to you, but I got so mad and then I heard you two talk and I just- reacted.â
âYou should haveâ, you agreed, âbut I should have been more open with you too.â
âSo, letâs try again?â
His voice sounded so soft when he said it you felt yourself melt under the covers. âIf youâre ready to deal with Connor Rhodesâ, you pointed out playfully and Jay shrugged, his natural confidence back.
âAfter I helped save your life Iâm pretty sure Iâm well in with him. Which reminds me, you owe me three times now.â
You rolled your eyes, feeling the tiredness return to your body. Soon enough you would be drifting off again. âItâs twice, considering you cancelled our first date.â
Jay grinned. âFair enough. But Iâm taking you out once youâre out of here.â
You smiled. âIâm counting on it.â

Would the Chicago PD characters have tattoos?
This is all my own thoughts and headcanons, lol and just pure fun.
Alvin Olinsky: He would. He'd definitely get something to honor Lexi after she died. Like her birth flower or name or something. Al probably also had like a back tattoo of some sort that nobody, except Meredith and probably Hank and Trudy know about. Like a snake.
Trudy Platt: She would. But like only one tattoo and it's across her ribs and that similar to Al, nobody knows about it and she never told Randall until their first time having sex together. Trudy smirked while Randall looked at it.
Hank Voight: No. But he thought about it after Camille died and than again after Justin. But he never figured out an idea that he thought would truly honor them. Hank, Trudy and Al almost got a matching tattoo drunk more than once tho.
Antonio Dawson: Yes. He has a lot. Antonio's very much a "every major (and sometimes minor) life event deserves a new tattoo" person. He definitely got Eva and Diego's names and birthdays tattooed like three days after they were born.
Erin Lindsay: YES. Like 18th birthday she got her first tattoo kinda gal. Partially to rebel against Hank and Camille, and partially to finally have control over her own life.
Kevin Atwater: Yes. Several. Mostly on his legs though he has a few on his chest. Kevin has a thigh tattoo as well.
Adam Ruzek: Yep, absolutely. Similar to Erin, he got a few when he was young. Probably drunk and got some dumb tattoos and regrets them sometimes. More recently though he got something for Makayla and Kim. Like their names or flowers or something cheesy. Adam also definitely has a banana tattooed on his arm for Al. 100%.
Kim Burgess: She didn't for a while, but after she adopted Makayla, Kim probably got like the adoption date or Makayla's birthday tattooed. Kim probably also did that one trend, where people have their partners/kids draw them hearts to get that tattooed. She definitely did that with Adam and Makayla.
Hailey Upton: She has like some small flowers on her shoulder or ankle. Hailey and Jay also got matching tattoos of the date they got married. Hailey got hers covered up after the divorce, but she always knows it's there.
Jay Halstead: The matching one with Hailey. Jay never covered it up there and it's a constant reminder of what he lost. He also has a small stupid one he got matching with Mouse one night, that while he'll tell people he regrets getting, he secretly loves.
Mouse: He has the one matching with Jay. Mouse also has a small Mouse tattooed on his arm.

Headcanon: little old ladies always ask Will to pass down items from higher shelves everytime he's out shopping.
And he secretly loves it.
He's like "ooh yay! A good grade in assisting little old ladies. That is a normal thing to be happy about."

Hank Voight and the Crackhead Detective: NOW POSTED!
It is finally posted! @creativeimagination206 and I have edited it and made it even better for all of you lovely people!
I am so excited to share this work. If you're new here, let me tell you about it: It's about an interim detective in Voight's unit who will NOT stop quoting memes!
You can find the full synopsis below the cut, along with the link. I really hope you love it, and please feel free to leave us feedback either here, in my DMs, in my inbox, or on AO3!
Detective Katelyn Meyers was âhighly recommendedâ by Trudy Platt, but when Voight meets her for the first time, he has no idea he is in for a wild ride.
Everywhere he turns, sheâs there, and has something to say. Typically, these quips donât make sense to Voight, who has no idea what a meme or vine is. But to Adam, Jay, and others, it is hilarious to watch their Sergeant be tortured to his breaking point by a young detective. She not only continuously quotes memes and vines, but she helps them solve the case. She is a great detective, who nobody can figure out, and it drives Voight to the point of (almost literal) insanity.
Will Voight ever understand what a meme is? Will he be able to intimidate Katelyn and make her back off? Or will she call his bluff and stare him down? Will he actually go insane? Read on to find out.

I've been binge-watching the One Chicago shows recently and since there's no confirmed age for the Halstead brothers (that I can find) I have this little headcanon
Jay and Will Halstead are fraternal twins and y'all can rip this from my cold, dead hands, okay.
i can't find any confirmed ages for the two, when Will was introduced in PD he was the younger brother but at some point after Med started they switched it and now Will is older than Jay. the two actors are close enough in age that I'm very willing to say that they're twins and it just hasn't come up at all.

Hailey "I'm going to be sick" plzzz
38. "I'm going to be sick."
The hospital seemed too bright, like the fluorescents were intent on making her headache even worse. Between not sleeping enough the night before and the added stress of how the afternoon was going, all Hailey wanted to do was curl up, preferably with her boyfriend, but the circumstances made that rather impossible.
Because Jay was in surgery down the hall, with a new round of wounds that she didn't even want to think that hard about. It was like she was fifteen again, waiting for news that may or may not be good. Only, this time, she wasn't injured right along with him. There wasn't a bullet in her leg, and she wasn't dizzy from blood loss, and the person who did it wasn't a dead body they could block out in their memories. And that made it all so much worse.
It meant she was looking over her shoulder every time the automatic doors slid open, as if whoever was haunting them would walk through them and try to finish what they started. It didn't make any sense, not when there were so many people around and someone would surely notice a masked attacker in the middle of everything. At minimum, one of the many trained cops in the room would notice, and it wouldn't take long at all for them to react, especially if the events of the day were anything to go by. There had already been shots fired at whoever was behind this new wave of attacks, even if they didn't seem to do anything to slow them down. Voight had made sure that they didn't get away without some repercussions for their actions, but no blood besides Jay's at the scene didn't give them very much to go on.
Especially when the weapon already had his blood on it to begin with.
Letting out a heavy sigh when another glance over her shoulder revealed only another soon to be patient coming through the doors, Hailey squeezed her eyes shut and put her head in her hands. The artificial darkness didn't do much to help her headache, or her anxiety, and it certainly didn't help that all she could hear was her own heartbeat in her ears and the steady footsteps pacing back and forth in front of her. She understood why Mouse was pacing, and that getting him to stop would be impossible until they had more news, but she needed it to stop, if only so that she could try to keep herself together. Because she wasn't exactly succeeding in that effort when her stomach was flipping and churning as much as it was, some combination of nerves and terror. It was supposed to be over almost a decade and a half ago, not still haunting them when their lives were finally settling into place.
"I'm going to be sick..."
The muffled words were barely out of her mouth when the pacing stopped, a gentle hand finding her knee. The touch made her lift her chin again, and the eyes that met hers were familiar ones, easy to read even when he was trying to hide everything behind them. That was familiar, too - Mouse did that often, hid his own feelings in favor of taking care of those around him. She still remembered what happened when they were kids, when he stood between them and danger until help arrived, with a gun in his hand that he didn't know how to use, and what happened afterwards. He hadn't spoken to anyone in months, had completely shut down, and no part of her wanted to experience that again. He was her best friend, the only person she trusted when everything was falling apart, and there was no way she would let him go through that hurt again.
"Hey... deep breaths, right? That's what Dr. Stone tells us. Panicking doesn't help us, and it doesn't help Jay." Mouse gave her knee a gentle squeeze to keep her focus on him, holding her gaze. It was careful and steady and controlled, exactly what it wouldn't be as soon as the sanity of multiple people wasn't on his shoulders. This was temporary, but she wanted to cling to it anyway, as if his odd optimism could actually keep everything from falling down around them. "He'll be fine, alright? Connor's got him, and he'll be out of surgery in no time. Everything's going to be fine. We'll catch this guy, like we always do, and we'll go home, and everything will be okay."

Hello! Some of you may have seen me around. I'm technically a nobody in this fandom on here as I like to keep to myself, but am taking a plunge and getting this off my chest now that the show's over for me. I don't see myself as a writer, but I have my own headcanons now for how I would have taken the Upstead story that I've written out and thought I'd share in case it helps other people. I've lost a lot of ships in my time! It never gets easier, you just learn new coping mechanisms. Will continue posting/reblogging content of older seasons to remember what we had. đ
As I mentioned here in tags, events may have given them a nudge, but all their decisions were made out of love. They may have experienced trauma and their own demons that influenced their methods, but this relationship and being together was always where they wanted to be. Their relationship was never a trauma response. Immediately leaning on someone else is a trauma response.
Headcanon 1: (personal fave) Tracy leaves first half of season.
In those 6 months, Jay and Hailey were talking and were both starting to open up and connect again. We learn divorce is brought up but they choose to work through it. Hailey was therefore feeling less pain and reintegrating herself back in the team. Jay lets her know that he has an end date and he wants to come home to her if she wants him too and that he's sorry. He thought that was what he needed but now knows all he wants is a life with Hailey.
Hailey decides that she's experienced enough in Intelligence and wants to try something new and lets Voight know she's leaving and that she and Jay are good. We learn Hailey and Jay have made plans to leave Chicago as they both have too many ghosts and need a fresh chapter. (Insert casual reference/joke to starting with a very belated honeymoon/reconcilation time, perhaps in a cabin in Northern Wisconsin if that still exists, or just anywhere).
Once Hailey has left, we later learn through a team conversation in passing, that they are in Seattle (humour me!) and she has taken up a new position in a role that's closer to the cop she wants to be. And Jay is doing something quieter in a more educator/training position rather than full combat. The two are happy and now prioritising their marriage and joining their lives together.
Headcanon 2: More in line with canon with my attempt to try and make sense of it...
Hailey and Jay are now divorced. Jay could hear Hailey was in pain in those 6 months and felt obligated as the cause of it to free her from him, even though we as the audience knew it was the opposite of what Hailey wanted from him which was to just come home. Hailey's mad because it's not how she wanted things to go but doesn't actually tell Jay that, thinking she has to let him go, so now has to bear a life without the man she loves and focus on the one thing she has avoided, (according to canon) herself.
Through talking with Kim she hesitantly decides to start therapy and in the next 5/6 months, slowly starts to think about who Hailey is and what Hailey wants. She decides that she's ready to leave Intelligence and try different areas of policing. She's a "good cop" but wants to be a better one.
Then in the last 2 eps, Hailey has reached out to Jay, to let him know she's ok and hopes he is too. He's thrilled to hear it as he didn't want to reach out in case it caused her more pain and feared she hated him. She's in a better place and at this point they can talk as old friends and she tells him she has a new job and will leave soon. Jay later mentions he has an end date and that he'd love to see her if that's something she'd want. She cautiously agrees, as she knows that is in fact what she does want, and they make plans to. We learn next season through the team that they are trying again with a fresh start.

Will Halstead Headcanons
middle name is patrick, after his dad: I have no doubt in my mind that pat halstead was the type of man that was âcarry on the family namesake / legacyâ orientated. Heâd 100% give his oldest son his name either first or middle and ofc this time it was middle.
Favorite color is blue: I donât really⌠have a reason? I just for some reason see him being a like, navy blue lover
He has his motherâs eyes: this one could technically be canon. Jay and their father have the same eyes so itâs reasonable to think that their mother would have brown eyes like will. (Idrk how genetics work but yk, he got red hair which is recessive and jay got green eyes so)
He. Is. Sappy. And i mean like, saying the cheesiest thing in conversations. Constantly complimenting you. Everything. He is a nerd and he just loves love.
Lover stan. That is his fav Taylor Swift album. it ties into him being sappy and he just loves the album. his favorite song off of it is daylight though. (his favorite in general is ivy but thats more so my fanfic canon idk about ârealisticallyâ)
heâd be a superman kid. like, idolized superman as a kid because he helped people and stuff.
Allergic to bees, again. No real reason just⌠in my mind

Halstead halloween headcanons based on ideas courtesy of @sorry-i-spaced
Jay always hated how Will got a pass on having to take you trick or treating because he was in all these fancy AP classes and stayed home to do homeworkâŚwhen really, he snuck out almost every weekend like Jay did to go to parties. And, Jay had no doubt that he would sneak out again this year. But, last year was the first and last time Jay went to a Halloween party because whatever was in that punch did not agree with him. Will told him not to drink it, but he did anyway because he was not going to listen to his older brother. And his stomach paid the price for it. He just told his mom in the morning that he ate too much candy.
But this year, Will was off in New York for medical school, you were friends with Ben, and he was dating Allie. So, he and Allie took you and Ben trick or treating. You guys were in a relatively safe neighborhood on the North side, so the two high schoolers figured that they could let you go a few houses by yourselves while they stood behind and Jay pulled out a flask that he had stashed in the inside pocket of his coat.
They stood closer to the trees away from the houses and he and Allie shared sips of stolen alcohol with some kisses in between.
That was, until Jay heard a scream. He thrust the flask into Allieâs hand and took off running because heâd know that scream anywhere.
You were standing in front of a house with tears rolling down your cheeks as Ben tried to tell you that it was okay and it wasnât real.
âBut they stole my candy!â you yelled.
âWhat? Whatâs going on? What happened?â Jay asked worriedly and crouched down to your height.
Allie quickly came up right next to Jay, with the flask safely hidden in her jacket, and scanned Ben for any signs of injury.
Then, you and Ben explained how a skeleton had popped out and scared you and you dropped all of your candy and the big kids (aka middle schoolers) had ran right up and took your entire bag of candy! Even the fabric Halloween pumpkin bag your mom had given you for trick or treating!
âItâs okay,â Jay tried to soothe. âWe can get you more candy. And Iâm sure Mom can get you another bag.â
âBut I want mine!â you cried.
âI know you do but maybe Mom can get you a new one that looks like a spooky kitty cat.â
This, in turn, got you to stop crying. âReally. And not too scary?â
âNot too scary,â he confirmed. âNow, I think Kelly said that the firefighters have cotton candy at the firehouse. You wanna go there?â
âWill the doggy be there?â
âMaybe. But we wonât know unless we try.â
And then, the four of you took the EL back to your area of town (idk Chicago geography super well so idk if this is accurate) and went to the firehouse. Kelly was grounded, so he was stuck working there at Bennyâs orders and when you saw him, you got super excited because you loved Jay Jayâs friends! Then, when he asked Jay where your trick or treat basket was later and Jay told him the story, he said heâd be right back. He went to his dad and told him the story and Boden overheard (at the time, Boden was only a lieutenant) and then, five minutes later, you and Ben were each handed a pillowcase STUFFED to the brim with candy.
Then, after getting cotton candy and petting the firehouse doggy, you went home. And, after hearing about what those kids did that night, your mom marched up to the north side the next day with Jay and demanded to know what house this happened at. Then, she calmly asked if they by any chance knew the kids that did this. They said they thought they did and gave your mom the parentsâ numbers.
Needless to say, 48 hours later, you had your trick or treating basket back with even more candy than it had in it to begin with and an apology from the kids written on a sticky note taped to the side of the basket. And, your mom had been reassured by their parents that the kids who did this were grounded for the foreseeable future.
âAllâs well that ends well, right?â Jay asked after it was all over.
âCorrect. But donât think me and your father donât know about the flask and liquor you took, young man,â Mama Halstead said.
âBut howâŚ?â
âI have my ways. Now, go get me the flask. And, youâre grounded.â Jay opened his mouth to protest when his mom cut him off. âDonât you dare ask how for how long. For the foreseeable future. The flask. Now.â
So, next year when Jay got stuck taking you trick or treating, he made sure, one, to skip the flask, and two, not to go to the North side and to just go to the firehouse instead. After all, after last year, Kelly told Jay that there would be a couple of king sized candy bars there for you courtesy of Lieutenant Boden.

When we fall | Part 1
Warnings (for all parts):Â Fluff, angst!!, description of injuries, blood, violence, use of guns, mentions of death, probably unaccurate policing/medicine
A/N:Â I just started watching Chicago PD (I'm on season 3 now) after I've been watching Fire and Med for years now. I just can't stand Voight so I only began watching for Jay and Burzek! And I am so in love with Jay. Please, this man is perfect. Just look at that handsome face!!
This is going to be a 3 part series I wrote on a whim. Originally I only planned on writing one scene, but then I figured it needed a backstory so this happened...
I have to say I am really proud how it turned out. I was just in such a flow when I wrote it that the story basically wrote itsself. I hope you enjoy and that the characters feel true to themselves :)
You had only began working at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center a few months ago, hesitant to work alongside your brother but knowing it was an opportunity, which would be stupid not to take.
Having moved to Chicago recently to be close with your brother after a messy break-up, you were still adjusting to your new life.
It was why you were more than relieved when you got along well with your co-workers, especially Natalie and her boyfriend Will.
They were understanding of your situation, were never bothered to show you where to find something at the hospital and made you feel welcome from the beginning as they invited you in on their group plans and joked like you were old friends.
Although you still felt a little uncertain at times to work with your brother, who had made himself a name as a brilliant trauma and cardiothoracic surgeon, he had been supportive since your decision to leave your old town behind and start a new life in Chicago.
Maybe, you thought, coming here had been exactly what you needed. A fresh start, a new beginning with new friends and no men to mess with your heart. At least for now.
âI told you I have sworn off menâ, you sighed, shaking your head in amusement at Natalieâs try to play matchmaker. âTheyâre trouble. I donât need that in my life right now.â
âHey!â Will send you a look, though you knew he wasnât mad. âSheâs not wrong thoughâ, April stated and Ethan next to her grinned. âI mean it thoughâ, you said directed at Natalie. âI just want to focus on myself right now. My job. No dating for now.â
Everyone at the table nodded and you relaxed, glad you had found these people, who respected and supported you. âCheers to that!â April raised her glass and you did the same when you noticed yours was empty.
With a groan you pushed yourself out of your seat and up, gesturing towards the bar. âIâm going to get another drink. Anyone want something?â They all shook their heads, already moving onto another topic.
As you made your way over to the counter you studied the people around you, trying to determine who was a cop, a firefighter and who a regular. Right in the beginning the others had introduced you to Mollys, claiming it was Chicagoâs bar where first responders spend their time after shift.
Figuring it might come in handy to memorize some faces you let your gaze drift over the sea of people, recognizing a few men that Connor had once told you worked at the CFD. They were laughing loudly, beers in hand as they seemed to be talking enthusiastically about something.
At the table next to theirs your gaze came to a hold, your eyes caught by a man you had never seen before but looked slightly familiar. Your brows furrowed as you rummaged in your head for something that connected you to him, but you couldnât find anything.
The people who sat with him didnât look familiar either, consisting of men and one woman with chestnut hair. Your eyes drifted back to the man, who had caught your attention, his brown hair styled neatly and his hands wrapped around a bottle of beer that he just raised to his lips.
You didnât meant to stare, but you were mesmerized, torn between trying to determine why he looked so familiar and captured by his effortless handsomeness.
He wore a green shirt, making you think his eyes were the same shade, although it was hard to know with the distance between you.
He seemed relaxed, leant back in his seat but listening to the others conversation attentively. Having sensed someoneâs eyes on him he suddenly looked up, his eyes searching the room for a split second before they fell onto you.
Your face heat up as a blush crept up your cheeks, knowing you had missed your chance to turn away. The man raised his brows slightly, in confusion just as much as amusement it seemed, before he lightly lifted his bottle, as if he was saying cheers.
You clutched your glass a little tighter, glad that it had been refilled in the time you had spent gawking at him, and copied the movement, an unstable smile on your lips. Then you turned away, meeting Stellaâs gaze from the other side of the bar.
The two of you had met when she had been at the hospital for smoke inhaling a while ago and you had clicked almost instantly, connected by your determination to hold your own in a field still dominated by men. And by your past with toxic relationships as you found out later.
âWhat was that?â, she asked, a teasing grin tugging at the corner of her lips as her eyes flickered between you and the man behind you. A part of you wanted to ask if he was still watching you, the other longed to forget it had ever happened.
âI donât know.â You let out a dramatic sigh. âCan we just forget it ever happened?â
Stellaâs face lit up, her curls dancing around her face as she shook her head. âYeah, you wish. But that was definitely something.â
You exhaled, pinching your nose. âThank you for the drink.â You saw Stella open her mouth in protest at your ignoration of her words, but before she could say anything else you send her an apologetical smile and hurried off.
No one seemed to have noticed your encounter and you slipped into the booth with ease, trying hard not to steal another glance at the unknown man a few tables away.
No men, you reminded yourself. Right now you needed to focus on getting your life together, not getting your heart broken by a handsome stranger.
-
âDr. (Y/l/n)?â âYeah?â, your head shot up from where you had filled out paper work. Because Connor and you were only half-sibling, you didnât share the same last name, something you had been more than glad over when stepping foot in this hospital for the first time.
No one knew where you came from and that you shared genes with the successful Dr. Rhodes and you had left it at that at first, wanting to make your own impression first before dropping the information.
You could still remember their shocked faces, the questions, but most of all the excitement as they asked what Connor had been like growing up. If you had any embarrassing stories to tell or photos to show.
You didnât, keeping them to yourself for now, because you hadnât come here to make fun of your brother. He had been your rock through your breakup and your move here, something you were so grateful for you feared you would never be able to show him just how much.
âWe have someone hit bit a bullet waiting in the three.â Your eyes widened. âWhy didnât they come with an ambulance?â, you asked, grabbing your iPad along the way.
Maggie waved off your comment, chuckling. âCops. You know how they are.â
Actually, you didnât. Coming from a small town you had no experience with shootings and gangs and many of the other trauma causes that were common here in Chicago. It was why you had been so excited about your job offer at the hospital.
Although you were still adjusting to the changes of living in a city and there were downsides you hadnât considered before, you liked it. It felt so different, giving you the sense that in this city everything could be possible.
So many options and so many possibilities, as if you could completely reinvent yourself. It was thrilling, making you wonder how you had ever lived without the adrenaline rush of stepping into a busy ER.
Quickly scanning the information on your tablet you pulled open the curtain, clamping the iPad under your arm as you disinfected your hands.
âHi, Iâm doctor (y/l/n) and you are?â You glanced up, startled as you met the eyes of a familiar stranger. The man in front of you grinned, seemingly better at covering up his surprise. âShouldnât it say my name on your tablet?â
He didnât sound rude, only a little sarcastic and perhaps even teasing. You gulped, trying to recompose yourself. âRight. I just prefer getting to know my patients myself than just relying on numbers and letters.â
You didnât see his reaction when you grabbed your iPad again, glancing down at it. âSo your name is Jay Hal-â âHalsteadâ, he finished for you and you looked up at him again.
It made sense now, why he had seemed so familiar to you nights ago at Mollys. âYouâre Willâs brother.â The man in front of you, Jay, as you knew now, raised a brow. âHave you considered becoming a detective?â
He was mocking you, again, and you were tempted to smack him with your iPad. âSo-â, he paused, letting his eyes drift over you. You felt your body tense under his gaze, copâs eyes, and stood a little straighter.
âYou were watching me at Mollys.â
You pressed your lips into a thin line, biting your tongue. You could only hope the embarrassment that began to sink in didnât show.
âI was not watching youâ, you stated and he raised a brow, daring you to explain yourself. âI just thought you looked familiar, but I couldnât figure out why. Now it makes sense.â
You turned halfway towards the door, gesturing to the halls where somewhere his brother was treating another patient.
âI donât think thatâs the whole truth.â
You almost gasped at the confidence in his voice, instead blowing out a breath. âIt definitely was.â
He shook his head, smiling. âI donât buy it.â
There were many things you wanted to say to him, but you swallowed them, knowing it was no use. He clearly enjoyed teasing you, so you wouldnât give him more fuel.
Instead you let out a sigh, shifting into professionality. âSo, Mr. Halsteadâ, you began. âJay is fine.â You tried not to let his interruption let you lose your string again and nodded. âJay, youâre here for a bullet wound on your left upper arm?â
Jay nodded, his eyes- they really were green- bright. Pulling on your gloves you decided it was time to reclaim your own position a little. âAnd you decided to just walk in here instead of coming with an ambulance? Seems a little reckless, donât you think?â
He raised one brow at your question. âItâs just a graze. I wouldnât even be here if it werenât for my boss.â He rolled his eyes, making you wonder what his boss was like.
âSeems like your boss is a lot smarter than youâ, you muttered, but to your surprise Jay grinned. âYouâre new here, right? At least Iâve never seen you here before. Do you always talk to patients like that?â
You shrugged, unbothered by his words as you stepped close to him to take a look at his arm. You didnât know what had gotten into you to talk to him like that, but you had the feeling with him it was fine. That he could take it, perhaps even enjoyed it over your dry professionalism.
âOnly to the ones I like bestâ, you said with sarcasm in your voice, too focused on inspecting his wound to check his expression.
Jay didnât move under your touch, allowing you to move his arm before you let it go again. He had done this before, probably multiple times. It was why he was so unbothered, perhaps even annoyed to waste his time here on something that seemed unsignificant to him.
For a moment you were tempted to ask him how he could choose a job that demanded such sacrifice, but you didnât know him and you doubted he would give you an honest answer. Not that you could blame him. You were practically strangers.
And was your job much different? Although you had never been hurt and doubted it would ever happen, you were still making countless of sacrifices for it. Taking on extra shifts, working through the nights, staying longer to take more time for your patients and putting their health over your own sometimes.
âItâs just a graze shotâ, you said when you were done inspecting the wound, ignoring his look that seemed to say âtold youâ.
âBut you still need to be careful with it. Give it rest, avoid any rapid movements, donât lift too heavy with itâŚI think you know.â
Jay nodded, watching you remove your gloves. âDoes that happen often?â He tilted his head in question and you bit your lip. âI mean, you- getting shot on the job.â
âAre you asking if I come here often?â His lips were curled into a lopsided grin, looking way too handsome on his features. You rolled your eyes at his teasing, ignoring the way your heart beat a little faster in your chest. âForget itâ, you stated, throwing your gloves into the bin.
âI am going to tell one of the residents to come and bandage the wound. Then youâre free to go.â
But before you could move the curtain again and leave the room you heard Jayâs voice behind you. âWait.â
You paused, turning back to him slowly. For the first time he wore a serious expression, his jaw twitching.
âIâm with the Intelligenceâ, he stated, in a way that told you the name should ring a bell. It didnât. You were too new to know much about it.
Jay seemed to sense it by your lack of a reaction to his words. âWeâreâŚvery involved in the City.â
Whatever that meant. You tilted your head in question. âYou mean with the gangs?â
Jay shifted. âVoight, my boss, he can be very- intense.â
You nodded slowly, taking in his guarded expression. It was a topic you wouldnât pry at. âAnd youâre okay with it? I mean- youâre just soâŚcasual about this.â
You bit your lip, hesitant to ask him but curious as well. The cops in your home town had barely ever used their weapon to the point you sometimes even doubted they were able to.
Jay shrugged nonchalantly. âBefore I worked for the CPD I was in the army. Iâve been through a lot worse than a graze. Getting shot at is just another part of my job.â
A veteran.
In such a short amount of time Jay had revealed so much to you. Suddenly you had a lot more respect for the man in front of you and you wondered if that was his way of coping, covering up his battle wounds and scars with sarcasm and wit.
You swallowed, trying to find words. But none seemed fitting. âSounds like I will be seeing you here often then.â You kept your voice emotionless, although the thought of seeing Jay regularly made your heart speed up a little. Of course you would prefer different circumstances.
Damn his handsome face and wit.
He grinned slightly, shifting the atmosphere back to something lighter. âDonât get too excited. I prefer staying bullet free.â âAs you should.â
Typing something into your iPad you gave Jay a final nod. âStay safe out there.â Then you turned to the door, already halfway out when you heard his voice again.
âI donât even know your name.â
You froze, smiling to yourself when you tried not to put too much weight into the fact that he had called you back a second time. It seemed almost as if he didnât want you to leave just yet.
But you pushed the thought aside, knowing it was pointless. You couldnât let yourself get distracted so easily.
Turning back to him you put on a polite smile.
âYouâre a detective, figure it out.â
You were surprised by your own confidence, but with Jay you didnât feel shy or insecure. He made you feel like you could say anything and he wouldnât mind. The type of man that didnât get upset easily, so comfortable with who he was that it took a lot to get him to lose his temper.
âI could just ask my brother, you know.â
You shrugged, unimpressed. âIf that lets you sleep at night, sure.â
You left the room smiling to yourself and it took you another few minutes to calm your rapid heart and collect yourself.
-
âYou didnât tell me you have a brother!â âWhat?â Will looked up from the computer, startled by the way you had barged into the break room.
Your shift was over and you couldnât wait to get home and relax on the couch, but before that you needed to talk to Will. Because after encountering the other Halstead your mind hadnât been able to let go of what had happened between the two of you. The way he had looked at you, teased you. How he had made you feel nervous and confident in just a matter of moments.
âWhy didnât you tell me you have a brother?â You leaned on the desk, sure that you had Willâs full attention now. âYou didnât tell us you had a brother the first few weeks either.â
âThatâs different.â You shook your head. âAnd I did tell you. SoâŚ?â
Will leaned back in his chair, stretching his back. âI didnât think it mattered. I would have introduced you eventually but- wait, is Jay here?â
You bit your tongue, feeling a little caught. You hadnât thought that maybe Jay didnât want his brother to know what had happened. But it was too late now, and anyway, how should you have known?â
"He was. He is fine though.â You kept your words vague, aware that you werenât allowed to share personal information with Will. Even if they were brothers.
Will let out a sigh. âThat idiot. Probably got himself in trouble again.â He reached for his phone across the desk and you quickly got up, straightening.
âYou didnât get it from meâ, you threw in before Will could drag you into it and he looked up at you with curiosity in his eyes. âI wasnât going to mention you.â
âOh.â You nodded, feeling relieved yet a little flustered. Will studied you with attentive eyes, reminding you of his brother for a second before his expression shifted into suspicion.
âSo you met Jay.â He said it in a way that proposed something meaningful behind his words, but you couldnât figure out why. âI did.â You shifted your weight to the balls of your feet before swaying forward again. A nervous habit. âI bet heâs the younger one.â
âHe is, yeah.â
You suppressed a grin. It made so much sense. âSo I should probably head home now. I got the early shift tomorrow.â
âRight.â Will nodded, the phone in his hands seemingly forgotten as his eyes were still fixed on you. âDid something happen between you and my brother?â
Your heart sank a little. Were you really so obvious? âI told you Iâve sworn off men. And your brother is- annoying.â
You wished the last part didnât sound like it came straight from a five year oldâs mouth, but it was too late to take back.
âTrust me, I know that.â Will let out a sigh, but you could see the fondness in his eyes. The gesture alone told you they had a close relationship.
A cop and a doctor. What a pair.
âWell, Iâll see you tomorrow. Goodnight.â
âGoodnight.â
-
Weeks had passed since you had last seen Jay. He hadnât shown up in the hospital again, which you were both glad for and disappointed at, and since you had been taking on extra shifts for a sick co-worker, you had spent almost all your time at the hospital or passed out in your bed.
âYou havenât gone out with us in weeks!â Sylvie was currently trying to convince you to come to Mollys. You had gotten to know her through Stella and the two of you had gotten along well, her sweet and kind nature something that made you feel comfortable around her instantly.
Although you had quickly learned not to underestimate the girl. She was working with a bunch of guys after all and had learned to stand her ground with them.
Sylvie could be very persistent, you realized again when she had called you to invite you to a girlâs night out. âStella wonât be working today, so itâs our chance to spend the night as just us girls.â
You gnawed your lip, thinking. You were tired, craving your couch and tv more than going out again, but Sylvie wasnât wrong, you had been mostly on your own the past days. Being a little social and getting out of your own apartment would probably be good.
âUrgh, fineâ, you groaned. âBut youâre paying my first drink.â You knew Sylvie was smiling triumphantly on the other end of the line. âDeal.â âNow get your ass over here!â It was Stellaâs voice in the background and you chuckled. âYou are the worst!â
âAnd you love us anywayâ, she chirped and you hung up, shaking your head with a smile on your face.
You hadnât thought about impressing anyone when getting ready, but you were more than glad you had put a little effort into your outfit and make-up when you stepped into Mollyâs that night, your getup like a wall build around you.
âYou came!â Stella crossed the room, her voice loud enough for a couple of heads to turn towards you. You could kill her for drawing attention to you, but you forced a smile onto your lips instead, trying not to look at anyone except her.
âHeyâ, you muttered, shrugging out of your coat and hugging her. âWow, girl you look stunning!â Stellaâs eyes flashed up and down your body as she let go, a smirk on her face.
âA little quieter, please?â, you almost whispered, aware that you still had the attention of the people around you. Stella seemed either completely oblivious to it all or unbothered, because she grinned at you. âLooking like that you will draw attention to you whether you like it or not!â
You felt your cheeks heat up a little, glad when you spied Sylvie making her way over. âI told her not to make a scene, but she wouldnât listen. You know how she is!â
You hugged her too, smiling as Stella let out a breath. âI did not make a scene. And Iâm standing right here, you know?â
Laughing, the three of you made your way to the back, where you slipped into a booth, your drink already waiting for you. âYou know me so wellâ, you told Stella as you took your first sip, relaxing a little now that the attention had mostly vanished.
âI got you, girl!â Stella winked at you, before launching into a story about their newest rescue. Soon you were enveloped in laughter and smiles, the stress of the last days forgotten for the night.
Only when Stella declared it was time for another round of drinks you felt the exhaustion return to your body. âI think Iâm going to head homeâ, you told them, stretching a little in your seat. âEarly shift tomorrow?â, Sylvie asked and you nodded.
âYouâre way too selfless, taking on all these extra shiftsâ, Stella pointed out, but you waved her off. âIâm the new one, so itâs fine. Helps me get to know everyone and everything better and itâs not like I have much to do in this city yet. I only got my gym membership, but I didnât really have time to look for anything else.â
âSee? Thatâs exactly why you need time off! You should be out exploring the city!â You smiled at Stellaâs enthusiasm. âItâs not like it wonât be here tomorrow. Iâm planning on staying here, so thereâs plenty of time to get to know it all.â
Sylvie offered you a smile. âIâm glad you do. I know it can be quite an adjustment to move to a big city like Chicago, but it will feel like your home in no time.â
You felt your heart squeeze painfully in your chest as you thought back to the past months, which had been filled with nothing but heartbreak, loss and a turmoil of emotions. Even as you had decided to start a new life in Chicago, you had been filled with fear and uncertainty, scared to make the wrong call yet again.
Never could you have imagined to find a job, that was so challenging, but gave you a sense of purpose and a group of friends, that felt like you had met them long ago.
âIt already kind of doesâ, you admitted, your eyes fixed on the empty glass in front of you before you looked up at them again. They both looked at you with big smiles on their faces and you almost felt tears fill your eyes. It had been a long day.
âWe should do this more oftenâ, you told them as you got up and grabbed your coat. âThatâs what I said!â Stella nodded.
âAnd I still need to show you that spinning class. You would love it!â Sylvie sounded so excited that you couldnât help but chuckle. âI am sure. Just text me and weâll find something.â
âAnd youâre sure you canât stay longer?â
Your eyes drifted to the counter as you considered staying for another drink, but your body felt heavy and almost sore from the dayâs work. âNext time. But you two have fun and donât drink too muchâ, you winked at them.
As you excited the bar you waved towards a few familiar faces before pulling your coat closer around your body to prepare yourself for Chicagoâs cold.
Still you shivered as you stepped outside, pulling out your phone to order an Uber. Something you had only done once before, on your way here, but was an easy and quick way of getting around the city.
It would take a few minutes for your driver to arrive and you realized it would have been a lot smarter to wait inside, but you hadnât thought of it then and you felt too proud to step inside again.
Pressing your hands together you rubbed them against each other a few times to create heat, before slinging your arms around your torso. Chicagoâs harsh winters wasnât something you hadnât gotten used to yet, but the promise of snow lingering in the air made it almost worth it.
You heard the faint sound of the door opening and closing behind you so you took a step to the side of the building, not wanting to stand in the way of whoever had just left the bar.
To your surprise the person came to stand beside you, his presence alarming you until you glanced up to find none other than Jay Halstead standing next to you.
Immediately your body relaxed again, as if it knew by instinct his presence meant safety. âThat was quite an entranceâ, he greeted you, referring to the moment you had stepped into Mollyâs.
You felt your cheeks flush at the memory, hoping he couldnât see it in the dim light of the streetlamp. âI didnât know you were here.â You kept your eyes trained at the empty street in front of you, willing and dreading the moment your driver came to pick you up.
âI was with the unitâ, he said and you turned your head towards him. âAre you here often?â He shrugged, his eyes darting to the building. âI guess so, yeah. Itâs the place where everyone comes.â
You nodded silently, contemplating his words. âBut if I want to be alone, I go to the bar at the corner North Milwaukee Avenue.â You met his eyes curiously. Was he making recommendations, because you were new in the city or did he have another intention?
âSo bars and hospitals. Everywhere else I can expect to run into Jay Halstead?â You didnât know why you asked, but a part of you wanted to know. Wanted to know more about him, what his life was like, what made him who he was.
Jay grinned faintly. âYou make it sound like Iâve got issues.â âDo you? Have issues?â You were teasing and he smirked. âDoesnât everyone?â
âI donât think I have.â Even as you said it you knew your words couldnât be farer from the truth. Hadnât your issues been what had led you here?
Jay watched you for a moment, seemingly picking up on your change of mood, but sensing you werenât ready to talk about it. You appreciated it, welcoming the silence to sort your thoughts again.
âSo what led you here to Chicago?â His question was innocent and something you had been asked countless of times since your move here, but for some reason you felt the urge to be open with him. No lies or excuses.
And even if Jay barely knew you, you thought he would be able to pick up on it. He must be an excellent detective.
âThere were someâŚthings I needed to leave behind.â It was vague, but more than you had told most who had asked. Only the girls knew about your breakup, but even with them you hadnât shared many details.
Jay didnât ask further, his grave expression suggesting he understood you better than you might have thought. âWhy Chicago?â You glanced away from him, taking in the empty road, the skyline with its lights in the background. âI needed a fresh start, somewhere where no one knew who I am. And I got family here, so it made sense.â
You could feel his eyes on you and you swallowed before facing him again. For a moment your eyes locked, none of you saying anything as you started at each other. Jay was the first one to break the heavy atmosphere, a smile dancing at his lips.
âBut youâre not a criminal on the run, are you? Because I would have to arrest you, if you were.â The tension that had risen in your body at the mention of your past vanished and you grinned, relieved about his ability to lighten the atmosphere. âWhat gave it away?â
Jay leaned a little closer, his eyes glistening. âMaybe the way you always look over your shoulder-â You inhaled. Was that really something you did? â-or that youâre nervous around me, a cop.â
The air you had held escaped you in a surprised sound and you hugged your torso a little tighter. âIâm not nervous around youâ, you huffed, shaking your head. Jay grinned.
âHow is your arm by the way?â You werenât interested in talking about yourself any longer, shifting the topic onto him. Your gazes travelled down his arm where his jacket was covering the wound you had inspected. It seemed like forever ago and like yesterday at once.
âItâs good. Voightâs keeping me at a leash, make sure Iâm 100% before I get into the field again.â He said it like it wasnât a big deal, but you could hear the strain in his voice. He missed it, being out there on the streets.
âSounds reasonable to me.â âYeah.â Jay nodded, a faraway look in his eyes. It seemed like you werenât the only one with secrets.
You looked up at the sound of a car nearing, a black car approaching the two of you. Checking your phone you held it up. âThatâs my ride.â
But you only managed one step towards it before Jay pulled you back, his hand wrapped around your lower arm. You gazed at it, confused and startled by his reaction and he loosened his grip, his hand falling to his side after a moment.
âYou know the guy?â, he asked, pointing to the man that was sitting behind the wheel, an impatient expression on his face.
Slowly you shook your head, your eyes flickering between the car and Jay. âBut heâs my ride. See-â you held up your phone to him, but Jay paid it little attention.
âYeah, no, youâre not climbing into that carâ, he stated, his voice firm but not unfriendly. âWait, what?â
Surprised you watched Jay walk towards the car, waiting for the driver to pull down the window before leaning in. You couldnât hear what was said, only watched the two speak for a minute.
Their conversation ended with Jay handing the man money, before walking back towards you as the car sped away in the darkness.
âWhat the hell was that?â, you asked as Jay came to stand beside you again, his body just as relaxed as before. âYouâre new in Chicago, right?â You didnât say anything, knowing it was a question he didnât expect an answer to.
âYou should not be climbing into a car with a stranger. And not in the dark.â
Your head spun as you tried to process what he was implying. âIt was just an uber! Everyone does that around here.â
You sounded clueless and defensive, shocked about the sudden change of events. Jay eyed you. âWell, then take it from me to never do that again. At least not alone. Chicagoâs not a good place, especially for women, trust me on that one.â
You didnât know what to say, blinking at him as the impact of it sank in. What if Jay hadnât stepped outside? You doubted anything would have happened, but what if he was right and you had been reckless? Naive?
âSo how am I supposed to get around the city then? Because driving in this traffic is madness.â
For the first time since your interruption Jay smiled again. âYou can just ask me. I am much cheaper anyway. And on top you will get to see my face.â
You rolled your eyes over his confidence. âNow thatâs a deal I canât declineâ, you muttered, fighting the grin that threatened to spread over your face and failing. Damn it.
âBut for real, what am I supposed to do? I canât just call you all the time I want to go somewhere.â
âIt wouldnât be a problem if we went together.â
Your eyes widened as you almost choked on the air. âYou mean a date?â
Jay shrugged, his eyes not meeting yours for only a second. âYou can pay me back for saving your ass twice.â
âTwice?â
âGetting into that car for one and saving you from freezing here on the street by driving you home.â
Smooth. You couldnât help the laugh that escaped you. âDoes that work with every woman youâre trying to impress?â
Jay shrugged, fiddling for something in his pocket before pulling out his car keys. You watched a car light up at the other side of the street, following Jay towards it.
âI wouldnât know. And who says Iâm trying to impress you?â
âMaybe because of this whole Iâm-a-cop-and-Iâm-so-tough-thing.â
Now it was Jayâs turn to chuckle. âThatâs not just a thing. So, what are you saying?â
Oh. You bit your lip, considering the thought of going on a date with Jay. Hadnât you just recently decided not to date and focus on yourself for a while?
But you couldnât deny you wanted to say yes. To spend more time around him and enjoy the feeling of ease he gave you.
âMaybe.â
You said it with a teasing smile, scared Jay might take your answer in a bad way, but he sent you a confident grin. âI can work with that.â

Okay, it doesn't make sense because in two or three chapters they make it clear that Will has no idea about being trans, but I don't care okay?? I am him, he is me

Honestly i hc Will as a transmasc bc I'm one and i kin him so..
