#will forever be amused by people’s tendency to scream bloody murder if you don’t like something from an artist#especially when it’s new#‘how dare you?! just go listen to the old stuff then!’#okay. I probably will. but that doesn’t mean it’s some sin to consume or have an opinion on the new stuff#or that you’re not a fan/too fixated on the old days#(when the artists themselves said they would be ‘pretending’ if they tried to carry on in certain ways)#I love Miles Davis#I also won’t listen to anything Miles Davis recorded after 1975#because it’s mostly crap#an opinion shared by plenty of musicians and critics and contemporaries etc#but even if I were the only one who thought that#it’s not ‘not being a fan’#it’s a choice to not automatically label something good (never mind brilliant or unique) because of who made it rather than its#objective quality#makes me miss music school#it’s a little sad that at that level scholars/musicians can have a discussion or even tear something apart without (for the most part)#being uncivil#but everyday musical discourse can be so mindless and fixated on loyalty
