I for some reason desperately need an arcane Derry girls au !!!!! Because can you imagine how fun the shenanigans would be like who would be who yk. I’ve kinda shimmied who and who and this is what I have so far (very debatable and opinions are welcome)

Caitlyn - James

(because the British ofc and caitlyn would be the one to move over for whatever reason and be sorta the outsider to the group the way James is but like slowly integrate. I hc she stays with Jayce as her parents deal with shit overseas or sum since they’ve know each other long time yk)

Vi - Erin

(I love the idea that vi is passionate about books and English and all that kinda like Erin and she’s just a girl living life with all her cringe and worries also James x Erin 😈)

Jinx - orlagh

(self explanatory ish ig also cuz the cousins/sisters thing but something about jinx giving orlagh just scratches at my brain but they obv wouldn’t be acting the exact same way (also the dynamic with James/caitlyn would be hella funny)

For more characters I’m doing this in reverse in the way that I’m not looking at what character from arcane is who from Derry girls. I’m looking at the Derry girls cast and saying hmm you kinda remind me of this person in arcane or this character would be funny in your shoes.

Now the group r all close friends and the setting is defo extremely diff since its no longer an all girls school unless… hold up what if mylo and claggor go to the all boys school yk the one they have trips with in some episodes (I think I need a rewatch but anywho) and they are friends outside of school. I’m getting ahead of myself now but if we just make it a public school then that solves yet takes from the comedy of some things but aaaareereghhh whatever we move on

The caitvi would be so sweet yet funny because nothing in this is entirely or at all cannon compliant to the Derry girls verse or plot or whatever

What brought this on was me thinking of that one girl who was hella religious thirsting over that one lad being like (oh god here he is talking bout his dead mother and here I am imagining he’s unbuttoning my shirt or whatever the quote is) and I was like wait hold up hold up

Catholic useless lesbian caitlyn thirsting over vi who’s just as much of a useless lesbian but at some point I was like make them Derry girls verse and I was sold like YESSS I’m a genius (I haven’t slept in two weeks someone send help)

But I do imagine the group being very chaotic yet sweet in that Derry girls charm of theirs yk and just doing fuck all shenanigans.

It's sorta a modern AU but not at the same time, i'll put a cut here because its long and i ramble

It's not a Forced project to bring Arthur back like with Gray but the alternate name i use for this AU in my notes is "The Once and Future King" so...

History repeating itself sorta thing but without the doomed narrative (unless.) (Haha just kidding...) (...unle--)

The "pendragon|orkney" family does exist (as in mom(igraine)(she's alive), dad(uther)(he left them), morgan and lot, and nephews and nieces (morgan lost a bet to 5 year old arturia and had to name her kids after the knights) and more arthuriana characters are scattered around too, but they dont have an importance to the HGW part of the AU, with the exception of a few

They still call her Arturia (TECHNICALLY they call her Arthuria, because i love that name and no one will take it from me) because the few years that Uther was with them, he called Arturia "Arthur" because he wanted a boy and he couldnt cope (theres the History repeats itself motif and also misogynistic men like that still exist), so Morgan used Arthur*ia* as a nickname, and it stuck

This is where i will confess that im thinking of using a different name for Arturia, i already Kinda do in my notes. As in legal name (thinking of Aurlyn, which is similar but different enough). I would be doing the same with some of the Orkney siblings whose names would not be as common in the modern world or too obvious a reference, while still being named after the knights (Gareth would stay as Gareth cuz thats literally still a mormal name people use, but a name like Agravain or Mordred arent as common, ig. Or Gawain. And Gaheris. Actually only Gareth has a mormal fcking name)

ALSO mordred is Morgan and Lot's kid in this. No weird cloning in my modern AU. Genetics from the pendragon hit hard tho, they still look like Arturia

Actually idk what else to say rn, theres some more stuff but its escaping my mind, so little random stuff

Arturia's family has little to no mage relation currently, but they still have mage blood and sht

Also Merlin manipulated Morgan(modern) using her literal dreams, into freeing him from Avalon and he used to that hang out with little kid Arturia at the park (everyone hates him/chases him away)

The reason why Cath Palug is there is because this AU follows the F/SN timeline, which is a timeline in which Chaldeas never formed. Therefore, Fou never learned to love people, teehee. He only learned to hate Merlin and King Arthur (?)

Also theres a modern Guinevere, tho her name is literally just Gwen, and Arturia and her met during high school Time but they werent Actually classmates (think like, tournaments or trips to other school/places). I called her "arturia's high school crush" in the tags of a previous ask but they are still friends and talk a lot

hey so this is kind of a specific question and idk if you'll know how to answer it, or even what the question is but yeah. this is gonna be long so buckle up

so i'm a big time scorbus shipper (the pairing of scorpius malfoy and albus potter) and i have been for years (like years.) plus the cursed child isn't a real thing and it can't hurt me and bowling ball didn't even ever write these characters but i fell in love with the ship and it was the first thing that got me into shipping and fandom in general.

now since i've read probably every piece of scorbus fanfiction and have day dreamed hundreds of hours of fanfic of my own, the characters are more mine then anyone else's (i'm not saying they are my characters, i just mean that i took the vague hint of characterization bowel movement gave us and over years have adapted and changed them to be who they are now) so the characters i think of are different then the characters we were shown in cannon, because i've taken little parts of the characters in fanfics and slowly pieced them together to create the whole characters they are to me now.

i also haven't set them in the harry potter/ hogwarts world in years, because i didn't like it very much and much preferred just the characters (i find the concepts and world building somewhat annoying and because we really don't know how the magical world works, it's hard to make the info we have work with a story. plus i absolutely hate how much it mucks up the family dynamics because they aren't really your siblings that much if you only see them in the summer from 11-17 years old and it makes the relationships with their parents weird because they aren't doing much parenting.) so over the years i've slowly changed things to fit with the real world in a way that makes sense. draco was just a childhood bully, harry isn't famous, scorpius' family weren't death eaters, ect.

I've basically chipped away the surrounding areas of cannon until i extracted just the characters remained and then polished and sanded them into who they are today. (i also somewhat got rid of some of the characters because they weren't very interesting to me, they didn't fit the story, i didn't have a unique characteristic for them {ex: teddy because i have james as the older brother character, and some of ginny's siblings because 6 uncles was just to many to make interesting and different from each other (i kept percy and ron, then sort of mixed fred's characteristics and bill's to make a different bit similarish third brother)) and i also added characters based on lack of information (we know basically nothing about scorpius' mother so i've just had to make up whatever to fit with the story (i gave him an uncle an aunt and two cousins because having no cousins, aunts or uncles seemed sorta weird and unreasonable) so not just them, but their families are different and changed to what makes sense with my story.

i guess the question is, if they aren't really the same characters anymore, and they are not in the same setting (and there isn't a plot to plagiarize), at what point are they mine and just have the same names? i might just change their names to close sounding names but that's also hard because i'll have to reprogram my brain to the new names. ig when are they far enough removed from the original that it becomes it's own thing?

This is actually how a bunch of people transition from writing for fandom into writing their own original work so you don't need to worry about it being confusing :D

Really, I think there's two major pieces. The first, and possibly the influencial is that you're writing in what is functionally an au. From what I can tell, that's what's started happening anyway, which is pretty neat. The other thing is making characters your own. You actually don't have to do as much as you'd think once you're already writing for AU since once characters have different backstories, they can actually have fairly similar personality since that's basically a lot of what character tropes feed into. Of course, their backstories will feed into how they act, so you will necesarily need to change some things, but how much you need to change is small enough that once you think you've changed it enough, you probably have.

I would be careful about names. Especially since the names that were chosen are fairly distinctive and unique, making only tiny changes will be pretty obvious (especially if you're not doing a ton the characterization). If possible, I would change the names enough that there's really no obvious connection between the original and your own work.

I think if you get some beta readers who are also from the fandom and don't tell them specifically what it's based off of, and they don't put the pieces together you should be fine. It's not really a requirement, but if you're worried about it, it's an option.

I guess tl;dr is changing the names and putting the characters into an AU is pretty much necessary, but as long as you feel like you've made the characters your own, you should be fine.
