There is a legend that is still told deep in the Forest of the Silver Moon: one of a Great and Terrible Warlord, with the ability to wield the flames of Taiyo no Jigoku, the Great God of Fire. Over 800 years ago, this Warlord- a Tidracorix who’s name has been lost to the sands of time- grew tired of seeing her people suffer under the talons of the ruling dragons, who controlled the Tidracorix population with an iron paw. She saw how her people languished, how they suffered through famine and poverty- and it angered her. She began giving passionate speeches from her perch atop the great Asahi tree, rallying support from not only her fellow Tidracorix, but even amongst the wyverns and lindwurms and, as her following grew, some of the higher ranking dragons.
One day, when the young rebellion leader was giving one of her impassioned speeches to the crowd below, a group of imperial guards sent by the Great Leader came to apprehend her for “disturbing the carefully constructed peace and brainwashing these loyal subjects with treasonous rhetoric”.
The young Tidracorix, fed up with the higher powers attempting to silence her and her people, famously responded by saying “If opening the eyes of your precious Leader to the plight of my people is disturbing your false peace, than I shall gladly continue to do so. If wanting to end the suffering of my family is treason, than I shall gladly bear the name of ‘Traitor’, for I will not turn a blind eye to the pain of others to spare myself their agony.”
The guards, I displeased by the young rebel’s response, proceeded to attack her and the watching crowd, inciting a massive riot throughout the small town. It was during this bloodbath that the young Tidracorix, cornered by 5 of the 20 imperial guards sent, suddenly burst into a massive ball of white fire that incinerated the five guards and some of the nearby buildings. The Great Nensho fire began, burning the entire town to the ground and taking over 250 lives. The young rebellion leader disappeared in the flames, and wasn’t seen again for almost 10 years.
Dissatisfied with the sudden disappearance of what he considered to be a powerful threat to his absolute control, the Great Leader sent out several hunting parties in an attempt to detain or kill this tidracorix. During that time, there was a growing sense of unrest amongst the peasant population, amongst the Tidracores and Lindworms and lesser Wyverns. While they may have lost their leader, her ideas still fueled the suppressed and frustrated peasant population, and rioting began to fill the streets.
The Great Leader, still desperate to hold on to his power, did his best to thwart the beginnings of a rebellion, which culminated in him sending out his army to the rebelling cities and towns to gather up all the leaders and philosophers for execution.
Exactly 10 years after the Great Nensho fire, the Great Leader held a massive execution in the capital city of Fuhai, in what would’ve been the end of the Taiyo no Ikari Rebellion. Most of the leaders of the rebellion, the most notable of which was the shadow wyvern Sakebi Karasu, were to be executed that day in town square, in a mass execution so large that some historians debate on whether or not it could be considered a massacre had it been finished. In fact, the Great Leader had seen it fit to have the entire kingdom watch, so momentous was this going to be.
However, before the executioners axe could claim it’s first victim, a massive ball of fire suddenly appeared in the sky above the city, with flames so fierce that it was said to have set some of the nearby trees on fire. Fearing that the wrath of the Gods was upon them, most of the crowd and even some of the imperial guard scattered, leaving the Great Leader to tremble upon his podium. As the ball of fire began to dissipate, the terrified monarch begged for the Gods to spare him his life, to know what he had done to offend them.
Only for the fire to disappear, revealing the fire tidracorix who had disappeared 10 years before. Furious at the Great Leader’s pitiful attempts to plea for his life, the fiery tidracore tore the Leader’s wings off, pouring molten gold into the wounds before finally tearing out his throat.
It was this horrific murder that began Ten no Ikari no Senso, or the War of Heaven’s Fury, which would last for 44 years and began the fall of the Ilahi empire. The Guretogoru army, which consisted mostly of the Great dragons, Greater Wyverns, and Hydras, fought viciously against the army of the Gold Sun, which consisted mostly of Tidracores, lindworms, lesser Wyverns, chimeras, and drakes. At the forefront of the two were the Great Leader’s eldest son, and the Great Fire Tidracore, who came to be known as Taiyo no Ikari.
As the war dragged on, Taiyo no Ikari became more and more vicious in her attacks, until even her closest advisors came to fear her destructive power. Her ideals, which had once been pure and good, became warped, as the once kindhearted leader descended into destructive madness.
Ikari’s growing bloodlust came to a point at the battle of Kogetaha, where in a fit of blind rage, the fiery tidracore burned the entire valley of Silver Leaf to the ground, including the small tidracore village of Tsukinoshimo. Apparently, the destruction was so horrific that some of Ikari’s own soldiers dropped dead from heart attacks, spurred on by terror. It was here that the fire tidracore finally went off the deep end, murdering anyone that she believed may be planning to betray her.
Eventually, it got to the point where all but her most loyal of followers, who came to be called the Kuraiyoru no Hono, defected out of fear. At this point, the Ten no Ikari no Senso had been going on for almost 40 years, scorching the land and decimating a large portion of the population, and everyone just wanted it to come to an end. But Ikari, lost in the senseless violence, refused.
Then, there was the final battle of Odayakana. According to legend, Ikari and her army of Kuraiyoru no Hono had obliterated the tired and weakened army of Guretogoru, leaving the valley bare and scorched. As Ikari’s army had prepared to celebrate, a single figure had appeared amongst the fire and blood, warning Ikari that if she continued down this path of senseless death, all that would await her was oblivion.
Furious that this apparent stranger would dare to oppose her, Ikari launched a massive volley of flames at the figure, hot enough to turn the stone below into magma. But when the fire finally disappeared, the figure was still standing, perfectly unharmed.
Outraged, Ikari launched herself at the figure, and the ensuing battle was so fierce that the sun, terrified of their wrath, hid himself behind the moon until it was over.
When the fires died and the ice melted, Ikari was nowhere to be seen. The mysterious figure, known in the legends simply as Permafrost, stood in the center of the massive crater that would later become Hinoyuki Lake, holding a small Ruby cut in the shape of a flame. Legend says that the mysterious being who had taken down the great Flame of Taiyo no Jigoku spent three days and three nights in the crater, mourning for the destruction of her once great home, before vanishing, never to be seen again.
Legend says that the great Ikari, the Flame of Taiyo no Jigoku, was sealed away in that Ruby flame for all eternity, so that her flames would never ravage the earth again. It is said the mysterious Permafrost also sealed herself away in a snowflake made of sapphire, to keep Ikari in check, and that both gemstones are hidden away deep in the caves below Mount Nisshoku so that they may stay trapped and unable to begin another war.
Legend also says that, just before disappearing for good, Permafrost uttered a single prophecy: When fire and ice tear the earth
When the sun and moon hide themselves in darkness
When the Onyx night is finally freed,
Diamond Thunder, quick and brave, shall light the shadows,
Reveal the truth,
And strike through the veil between life and death.
For 900 years, the world has been waiting with baited breath for the return of Ikari and Permafrost, for the all consuming darkness, for the Diamond thunder. Little do they know, however, that the Ruby fire and Sapphire snow have already been discovered....
