Kathy T. sent us this message yesterday. It is messages like these that make us excited to get to work every day! Our response: Hi Kathy - thanks for reaching out. We can definitely help - in fact, Pamela started this company 30+ years ago primarily because she hated Accutane so much. We tend to find that people reach out to us at their wit's end, willing to try anything other than go on prescription medications. You can see from our testimonials that many client's have tried everything under the sun before they find us - and that we are able to prevent breakouts where other products cannot. There are 2 main reasons for this: 1/ we don't contain the oils and fillers that pretty much all other larger companies have to use. We are small batch retailers, meaning that we literally fill 20 bottles at a time and then ship them out within a day or two. Other products need the oils to stabilize their products for shelflives that are required to be 1-2 years. What this means for you, is that our active ingredients are much more potent - they don't have to fight through all the other ingredients to get into the skin. and 2/ we ask that our clients stay in touch. We ask they check in with us every 2 weeks initially so we can make sure that the products they ordered are the right products for their skin and that their skin is progressing at the right pace. This all said, can you please go ahead and fill out a quick questionnaire? Once we have that, an esthetician will reach out to you for a quick call. Hope this helps and please let me know if you have any other questions! . . . . . . #whywework #esthetician #clearskin #happyclients #accutane #prescriptionmedication #acne #acnetreatment #ninjaskincare #like #love #follow https://www.instagram.com/p/Bz8l1WFJwJ3/?igshid=nsopxf0ea31z

Flash Forward
*She's a sweet kid. Reminds me of myself around her age. Bursting with enthusiasm. But she just looks so damn nervous with me around.* "Is there anything I can get for you, Mr. Chan?" "A water would be perfect, if it's not too much trouble." I'm not thirsty. I just want to give her an excuse to leave. I've got enough nervous energy on my own. This is my first commencement speech. I'm not sure who in the advancement office thought it was a good idea. I'm not special. I'm not terribly important. I just make stuff. Funny how that happens. This whole thing is funny. I leaf through the speech, too jittery to actually process any of the words. The girl's back. "Are you ready, Mr. Chan?" "As I'll ever be." "Alright. We'll get started soon. Is there a certain way you'd like to be introduced?" *Good question, kid*. How do you summarize your life? What's important that I've done? How do I seem respectable without coming off as an asshole? "Well..." "Your office sent over a bio. Do you want to use it?" I can't help but smile. *The office bio*. What a piece of shit. The PR guys wrote that. All they cared about is how many companies I started, how much money we raised, the IPO. It's just marketing - work marketing. *CEO. Serial entrepreneur. Innovator. IPO.* You'd think I work 24 hours a day. Is that what I'm supposed to tell them? *"Hey grads, work yourself to the bone and you have the remote possibility of getting lucky and having a successful company!"*. Sure. "No thanks, I'll just write an intro on my own." This can't be that hard. I pick up a pad of paper, and start scribbling. *Ryan Chan is a...* Hmmm. *is a...* The lines are a million miles long. *is a serial entrepreneur* Read: Serially unemployed. *is an innovator* Read: Asshole. *is a dad* Gee whiz, how original! *is just a guy who makes stuff* Yeah, that'll do. keep it low key. All you needed was the starting prompt, right? The rest of the paragraph flows more easily. *Ryan Chan is just a guy who makes stuff. Starting his first company while an undergraduate at Brown University, he has helped launch several successful (and some not so successful) ventures since, ranging from mobile banking for under served populations to relationship management services. Following a string of successful exits which he attributes entirely to luck, Ryan is now focusing on developing entrepreneurship education, both within the US and abroad. An avid scuba diver, cyclist, and design hound, he resides in San Francisco with his wife, two children, and a very lazy dog.* Good enough. "Mr. Chan, you're on in 15 minutes." I didn't even realize she was still here. I hope I didn't do anything stupid. I hand her my notes. "What do you think?" "I didn't realize you went to Brown! I'll give this to your introductory speaker." She wanders off. A few moment later, I hear my name over the PA. "And now, speaking to you, the class of 2032, I present, Ryan Chan..." *Fin.* Epilogue --------------------------- I started writing this short in response to a prompt I got on a recent survey. It was one of those squishy self-help rags, but this question really got me. It asked: If you were to give a commencement speech in 20 years, how would they introduce you, and what advice would you give? Nothing like trying to imaging the future to get your ass into gear. If you want something to happen in 20 years, you have to start now. If you aren't following the advice you'd give someone else, you have to start now. Whatever it is, just go. Start now.

Why do we work?
Why do we spend 8 to 12 hours a day ‘working’? A huge chunk of our lives is taken up by this thing called ‘work’. What gets us up in the morning and what is it that gets us going? Are we working to pursue a specific goal? Or are we simply going through the motions to make a living?
We often don’t link the notion of meaning to our jobs. Today’s mainstream work culture can lead us to believe that security and financial stability takes precedence over work that is aligned with our aspirations and passions.
It’s natural we question what we do, but it’s not often we make changes to our work situation. Why is this? We feel comfortable, we are not sure what might be better, we can’t find the time to figure it out because we are ‘too busy’ with our jobs. So we do not make changes to where or even how we work.
The Internet has done wonderful things for transparency, in our small way we trying to contribute to the transparency and define what it means to go to ‘work’; either as a designer, or as a writer, in a small company in Brazil or in a large corporation in Sweden.
But, getting to WHY we do what we do still has a way to go. We, as humans, might not yet be conditioned to share ‘those’ kind of feelings in the context of conversations about work. At the same time we have, and you know as a reader of this newsletter, seen community members be very open about WHY they do what they do. We need more of that - on Somewhere and in the world in general.
