#whyfeminism? Feminism reinforces and promotes the power of choice for everyone. That kids have the right to be anything they choose to because gender should never define your career path. That women, irrespective of race, ethnicity or religion, have the power and right to choose the path of their own lives. That we have a right to make our own choices. That is feminism. #feminism #africanfeminism #genderequality #colouredafrica #CA https://www.instagram.com/p/Bp6DgUPgTEt/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1d117npaeuc04

#whyfeminism? The menace of Poverty. When poverty strikes, women and girls are the most affected groups. We need to liberate women, and men, from the shackles of poverty. We must provide them with the necessary tools to emancipate themselves and others. #whyfeminism? bell hooks says: Teaching women how to defend themselves against male rapists is not the same as working to change society so that men will not rape. Establishing houses for battered women does not change the psyche of the men who batter them, nor does it change the culture that promotes and condones their brutality... Denouncing housework as menial Labour does not restore to the woman houseworker the pride and dignity in her labor she is stripped of by patriarchal devaluation. _ Feminism is all these and more. To achieve #genderequality, we must help those who are already affected by situations of suppression, poverty and violence. At the same time, we must work hard to prevent the reoccurrence of those situations. Feminism is a reactionary movement to patriarchy. It is both curative and preventive. _ Spread the word. #feminism #africanfeminism #colouredafrica https://www.instagram.com/p/Bpj1n-PgHIL/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=riaipqat9pny

#whyfeminism? Women still have minimal representation in governments across all levels. In 2018. There are only about 20 female heads of government in the world with one in Africa in Mauritius, Ameenah Gurib-Fakim. Women are largely unrepresented in most parliaments in Africa, except for countries like Rwanda and South Africa. We need equal representation of women and men in governments across all levels. Politics must be inclusive of women, youth and marginalised groups. This is feminism. #feminism #africanfeminism #genderequality #morewomen #mauritius #rwanda #southafrica #colouredafrica https://www.instagram.com/p/BpRhkEXHFzX/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=urr5k13fnhr8

#whyfeminism? At least 200 million women and girls in 30 countries have undergone #FGM in different stages. Some have had the clitoris cut off, some the labia majora, some also the labia minora. Some women's vaginas are only small openings for urine and menstrual blood now due to this horrible practice. _ How did we start this? Society decided it was good to cut off parts of a girl's vagina to prevent her from being sexually loose, as she somehow was destined to be. _ With sensitisation and feminist movements to stop this practice, the rates of girls between 15-19 who are subjected to FGM in these countries where the practice is concentrated have dropped from 1 in 2 girls in 2000 to 1 in 3 girls in 2017. The lives of all these women and girls will never be the same. We need to do better for women and girls. #whyfeminism? African women are the largest labourers in the Agricultural sector, but are prevented from owning or inheriting land by patriarchal traditions. Globally, women are just 13 per cent of agricultural land holders. Laws and cultural practices are the inhibitors to women owning land in many parts of Africa. Inheritance laws, particularly the practice that denies women the right to inherit from their husbands and fathers. In these areas, women are still regarded as property themselves, inheritable under suppressive #widowhood practices. _ Feminism is relevant in changing the discourse in the most rural societies so that women can effectively participate in the agricultural sector by owning land and having equal status with men. #genderequality #kenya #Zimbabwe #zambia #feminism #colouredafrica https://www.instagram.com/p/Bo853cdH9Tv/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1xdvnsccuispt

#whyfeminism? This is 2018 and 48 percent of women worldwide cannot freely make decisions about their own health care, contraceptive use or sexual relations within marriage/unions. This is why marital rape is not recognised by the laws of many African countries. This is 2018 and in 18 countries, husbands can legally prevent their wives from working. _ Imagine that. These are the lives of women today. These are the facts to remember. These are the reasons why we must emancipate ourselves from the shackles of patriarchy. #genderequality #feminism #colouredafrica https://www.instagram.com/p/Bo7Ba2fnEjy/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=10hxd3zss1wa

#whyfeminism? We must solve the problem of rape by addressing the cause: rapists; who are protected by a system that seeks to control women's lives and bodies. #miniskirts do not cause rape no matter how much the 'Miniskirt Law' of #uganda tries to tell us so. We must protect the future so that there's an end to the #childrape epidemic scourging #southafrica and end the culture of silence that protects rapists in #Zimbabwe Men must no longer joke about raping women in #Kenya. We must end #genderbasedviolence and achieve #genderequality in #Africa #feminism #colouredafrica https://www.instagram.com/p/Bo4YyvMH7Bd/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1lgh09nnjx46z
