So I just re-watched Civil War, and I still can’t understand Iron Man’s side of it.  Don’t get me wrong, I love Tony Stark, but this is the first time I couldn’t get behind him.
Let’s look at the time line of captain from the movies.  He gets this super serum and is finally strong and able bodied and the government wants him to sell bonds for the war.  Sure maybe that helped with war efforts but I suspect it was more to line pockets than anything, meanwhile the war rages on and Steve is just suppose to sit back and not do anything, because government’s orders.  Then his best friend’s life is on the line, as well as many other soldiers, and he can’t just sit back anymore.  So he gets into the war and he makes a huge difference, and only then because he went against the government. Steve wants to be sure he can have a say in where he goes, because he doesn’t want this to happen all over again.
Fast forward to when Steve comes out of the ice.  He wakes up just 2 weeks before everything that happens in the avengers movie. Almost every person he ever cared about is dead, he’s definitely not had enough time to adjust to modern tech.  He has no friends and no one has really reached out to help him during this time, but then he’s back on a mission helping the avengers.  He comes to find out that his own government is making weapons of mass destruction from the cube he went down into the ice to protect.  He has to get past that though, because alien invasion and all, but then it gets worse because his government sends a nuke towards Manhattan.  Here Iron Man saves the day and it all works out, but could you imagine them in control of the avengers?
Anyway back to the time line and you have Hydra back and trying to take over the world, they have managed to infiltrate shield and who knows where else, so it stands to reason that letting any governments control the avengers, could be opening them up to Hydra.
Now go to Age of Ultron, Iron Man built Ultron, so I guess I understand why he might want to be put in check, but honestly if he had just listened to the other Avengers, maybe talked to them about his plan, none of this would have even happened.
Now with Civil War, yes, they did some damage, and yes some innocent lives were probably lost, which is not what any of them want.  Still likely allot more death and carnage would have played out is they hadn’t intervened.  Now suddenly the government(s) ant them to sign the accords.  They want to have them all registered, anyone who ‘isn’t human’.  Which right there is dangerous thinking because how do they know that their basic human rights will continued to be guaranteed if they are registered as ‘not’ human.
Steve is the only one in the movie who is actually shown reading the accords they are just expected to sign the dotted line or be considered criminals.  Criminals with no right to a trial or a lawyer, locked away on a raft with no contact with the outside world, we will later find out. You know Wanda was in a straight jacket and they had to have found some way to keep her powers in check and considering how she looks when Tony is there, I don’t imagine it’s anything very ‘humane’.
Steve has so many reasons NOT to want to sign the accords.  If Tony knew anything about Steve, not Captain America, but Steve, then he would not have just expected him to sign on the dotted line.  Then Bucky comes into the picture.  Bucky who knows things about Steve like the fact that he used to put newspapers inside his shoes.  Bucky who knows Steve, who always knew Steve, and didn’t care to remember Captain America, but he remembered Steve Rodgers, that’s for sure.
Bucky who was lost 70+ years ago, but according to Natasha he had only been the Winter Soldier for about 50.  which means Bucky was fighting their mind control for DECADES.  Even if you aren’t a fan of Bucky, he’s a POW.  Was a POW for longer than anyone, and they messed with his head like Loki did with Clint.  Everyone seems fine with Clint, who killed men he probably knew.  Steve just lost the only other person in the world that knew him as that scrawny kid from Brooklyn, and he’s not going to lose Bucky too.  Either way he wasn’t likely to sign the accords, but of all the avengers only Natasha reached out to him.  If Tony was really friends with Steve he would have reached out, or at least I would hope he would.
Of course Tony was more than happy to blast Sam when his friend in the War Machine was down.  Sam was trying to save him just like Tony was, he hadn’t shot him, he had just avoided the blast from vision, but Tony blasted him like it was his fault. Didn’t even think twice about it. At no point did Tony offer input on how to help Bucky, and considering Tony used to be an arms dealer, you would think he would be the one wanting to give people second chances.
Then there is the reveal, and Tony learns that Bucky killed his parents, and this I can understand to some degree.  It might have been years ago but Tony still is having trouble with it, can’t reconcile it.  He just want’s to hurt the man who killed his mom, but that wasn’t Bucky Barnes.  No he might have had his face, but that was the Winter Soldier.
Tony is gone though, and he would have killed Bucky,  the only person who Steve has from before, and Tony doesn’t care.  He can’t see past his own grief.
I saw some people tried to make Captain and Bucky into villains, saying two against one, but Tony Stark is in a medal suit and is trying to KILL Bucky. They tried running, Steve tried distracting him so Bucky could get away and hopefully Tony could cool off, but Tony essentially trapped them both in there. Steve and Bucky are just trying to stop him, but’s he got the fire power, he’s got the rage, he’s in a metal suit.  Meanwhile Steve is feeling every hit taken, and maybe Bucky can’t feel his metal arm (I think he might if the way he acted was anything to go on) he can sure as hell feel the rest of his body getting beat.   Steve hasn’t looked this beat up probably since he was still that stupid kid from Brooklyn picking fights he probably couldn’t win.
It wasn’t until Steve realized that he probably wasn’t going to get Tony to see reason, that he realizes if he doesn’t stop him, Tony really will KILL Bucky, that Steve finally shows his ‘dark side’. That’s the first time Tony seems to see Steve, he looks shocked, like he can’t believe it.
The thing that really gets me though, is when Tony says Steve doesn’t deserve that shield.  That’s when I knew Tony was never Steve’s friend.  Tony may have grown up hearing about Captain America, maybe at one point he even idolized the man, and yeah he worked with him, but he never knew Steve.  Because Steve has always been about people, and if you think for one second that he would give up his best friend for a piece of metal then you don’t know Steve Rodgers.
Still in the end Steve holds out the olive branch with the burner phone, he reaches out to Tony.
The sad thing is I love Tony, I have been on his side most of the time, but not this time.  I really hope to see the two of them get past this, and maybe really become friends.
So Yeah I’m very much Team Cap.
