A year. Another. A carefree summer over too soon. This autumn will come and go just the same, yet the September that dawns on the horizon carries a chill into your heart more befitting a harsh winter. You stand behind the counter as you did yesterday, and you will tomorrow. The clock on the wall counts down each second you let slip by. You promised not to think about it anymore. You liar. “Are you going to clean that one camera all day?” Cheng Xiaoshi jokes from the couch, otherwise engrossed in his phone. Your hands don’t stop moving. You have a retort on your lips, but you don’t hear it over the deafening clock. “Lu Guang, are you listening?” Irritation, confusion, concern. You need to speak up. Again, you miss your cue, and it brings Cheng Xiaoshi to your side, his face close to yours, his frown telling. “You’re burning up!” he shouts. The camera is yanked away, and the steady hands that march you towards the back contrast panicked babbling. You’re fine, you want to say. Everything is fine, one of you needs to hear it. You fall back against Cheng Xiaoshi’s chest, and the world goes dark.
