“Why do you…do that? The prayer. I don’t get it.”

George blinks himself alive, and Matty looks at him expectantly.

“What? I wasn’t…listening.” He looks like he’s really trying not to fall back asleep, and his voice sounds too far back in his mouth. “Sorry.”

“Don’t be. I was speaking of saying grace – why do it?”

George’s eyes go a little bit dead for a second, and then come back, and he says, “I just think I should thank Him for my food. He, you know, blessed us with,” he coughs, open mouthed then embarrassedly close mouthed, “the food we’re given, so, like, I just think it’s the right thing to thank God for it.”

Matty nods. He knows where George is coming from, and for some reason, he’s quite willing to know more. Maybe it’s the twenty something minutes more sun he’s been getting recently that’s making him so open to it, or maybe it’s just because he feels bad about George being sick, but regardless, he’s already asked, and George has already answered.

“Why not…the people who got the food, like, the people who sell you it?”

George just sort of shrugs. “I mention the hands that prepare it, that…that applies to them.”

Matty shrugs back, noncommittal, and eats.

Meals eaten in silence are usually uncomfortable and tense, but when it’s George that Matty’s eating with, he finds that, despite how awkward George is anyway, they eat comfortably. Neither speak, and neither try to avoid the fact that the other is quiet.

He’s trying to remember what the words are, or think of whether he even knows them at all, but they don’t come. He’d, some earlier time in his life, said it every day before all three meals, and written it down in so many places, just in case he forgot, that he still finds them now. It stopped a while ago. He finishes his food.
