with shaky breaths, your tongue darts out to wet the dry planes of your lips— nervous building up as the pressure your teeth use to sink into the swell of your bottom lip. you shouldn’t be nervous. this is keigo, kei, the guy who sung songs about chicken wings and moved so fast his brain couldn’t catch up with his words. the guy who held you tight in his arms while you shook with fear, who stared at you warmly to calm your nerves on set.
keigo takami was the guy you’d fallen head over heels for.
you shift from under the blankets, the sight of your phone screen lighting up pulling you from your flurry of thoughts. the darkness of your room is brightened by keigo’s contact photo flashing before your eyes.
it was a picture of him that you’d taken on a lunch date one day— his golden avian eyes that held nothing but the sun were focused on the delicious meal in front of him, a small, earth shattering smile painting his sweet lips. you could look at the photo for hours; but choose to answer the call before your mind can get away from you.
“kei,” his name falls easily from your tongue, tasting of familiarity and comfort, as if it were the only name you were made to say. you could never get tired of saying it, hearing it. “i missed you...”
keigo chuckles from over the line, the sweet melody reminding you of the songbirds that play their tune for you every morning. sinking into your oversized sweater, you suppress the urge to squeal like a school girl and roll over into your sheets— even the simplest things about him have you reeling from the other end of the phone. “missed me? baby bird it’s only been a few hours since you last saw me,” his timbre voice fills the air in your room, resting in every inch and every corner— surrounding you as if he was right there with you. “what is it about me that you miss baby? is it my eyes? my voice? my touch? my...”
which each suggestion, his voice drops an octave, making your heart thump louder in your chest to the point that you’re afraid he might hear it. an embarrassed heat burns at the tips of your ears, flustered without him even being there with you. “keigo takami,” you scold him gently, knowing that if he could see, the smile that spreads across your lips would betray you. “don’t you dare go making me flustered, i’m trying to tell you something important!”
“i’m all ears baby bird.”
he falls quiet, nothing but the sound of ruffling sheets and static between you. you know what you want to say, you’d practiced every word for hours with eiji over the phone before; but now that you were face to face or rather— voice to voice— you couldn’t even think straight. your palms are sweating, heart rattling against your rib cage and now your throat is dry.
what can you say? what can you do? you don’t want to leave him hanging but you don’t know if you can form a proper sentence but it seems your mouth has a mind of its own; speaking before your thoughts can catch up with it.
“yn? baby?”
“keigo takami, i think i have feelings for you.”
you smack a hand over your mouth, just hard enough to send you flying back into your bed sheets and pillows. you had a whole speech prepared, a confession that could win oscars if you really wanted it to but of course, you’d gone and messed that up too.
the silence that crackles in the air causes your mind to race with anxiety, how much of a fool you’d look if keigo didn’t feel the same. after all, he was the hawks, a pro hero who was just as good as anyone out there. number two on the ranks and at the top of the game, he could have any girl, any guy, any person he desired. so why on earth would he choose you?
“you think, or you know?” the pro whispers into his device and you could almost hear the smirk entangled with his very tone. he’s teasing you. hawks was always one for jokes and humour; one thing you loved about him was his ability to keep any situation light hearted— but for a second you wished that he took the situation seriously.  fumbling with your fingers, you debate on whether or not you should ask keigo to forget you ever said anything, you could deal with the repercussions after drowning yourself in mina’s ice cream later, but keigo seems to have other plans. “i like you too baby bird, i know i do.” he mumbles as if he’s gone shy, now he’s the one waiting anxiously for your response.
you release a breath you hadn’t realised you were holding, clutching at your chest as fresh air fills your lungs. “that makes two of us then,” you hum warmly, feeling your body warm up at the idea of your favourite pro liking you back.
but keigo doesn’t stop there, it’s almost as if he’s gripping the phone tighter— desperate to convince you that you’re everything that he needs. “i have for some time now yn, i don’t know when or how it happened, but i’m glad it was you. your heart and your soul are kind, half of me doesn’t want to taint it but the other half of me is a selfish bastard,” the hero you’ve come to care for pauses, mulling over his next words in a way that has you sitting up to prepare yourself. “that selfish side of me, that half of me needs you, wants to make you happy. that’s if you’ll let me, songbird...”
you find yourself nodding over the phone and it takes a second for you to realise that keigo can’t see you. desperately you wipe at your eyes, cheeks stained with tears you hadn’t noticed were falling and heart feeling more full than it’s ever been.
you feel set free, cut from the restraints of your past love for bakugou— ready to make new ties with keigo.
“i want you too kei, more than anything.”
hawks lets out a contented sigh from his end, mumbling sweet words to you not long after. “then you can bet your ass i’m taking you on a date as soon as we’re both free, i’m gonna show you how much i care about you. how much i desire you, baby bird.”
the rest of the night is spent full of giggles and blushes and teases, keigo’s words burning a smile into your cheeks. eventually, he sends you to bed with the promise of a kiss as soon as he sees you next, hanging up the phone shortly after.
plugging in your phone, you situate yourself amongst your pillows, ready to sleep with a smile on your face— when your phone lights up with a tweet notification from none other than the bird man himself.
‘sleep well, my baby bird, dream of me.’
it reads and despite the likes and retweet that flood the poor tweet, you know keigo wrote it especially for you. adding it to your bookmarks, before sending one of your own and drifting off to sleep.
‘goodnight bird boy, see you in my dreams.’

1,3,5,6,7,11,22 & 23 for the Return asks!
1.Romance - What was the first MCR song you remember hearing?
Helena. I spent my childhood in a town where most of everyone had their side hustle to pay bills and some neighbors played in bands. Grew up singing songs I didn’t know the titles of until I was granted internet access and could finally look things up and get into them. shout out to the lads who would not stop singing she will be loved and so i know the lyrics but didn’t even know it was by maroon 5 until like, sophomore high school
3.Vampires Will Never Hurt You- Favorite MCR aesthetics?
Oh god, the red smears around the eyes and then the eyeliner. Red undershirts and black jackets. I perfected that red-smear-eyeliner look that Gee had for Revenge. I already look like I never have enough sleep, but at least with the make up it looks like it’s on purpose kdjfhssf
5. Our Lady of Sorrows- Has MCR influenced any of your spiritual practices?
I don’t think so, really, although the entire BP album does make the idea of death a little more comforting than scary.
6. Headfirst for Halos- Which MCR song makes you the happiest?
Oh, that’s a hard one. But if I had to choose one song that makes me go batshit, it would be I’m Not Okay. That ‘trust me’ makes me laugh every time.
7. Skylines and Turnstiles- Which song do you associate with a major life event or period in your life?
FAMOUS LAST WORDS. A couple of years back, I was in a tough time and I was not in a good place. I tend to sing whenever I’m frustrated since it gets a bit of energy out but for a long time, I didn’t really hear anything I was singing or feeling it, and then I said the words ‘I am not afraid to keep on living, I am not afraid to walk this world alone’ and just froze and sat up straight, shocked like someone had taken a fish and slapped me in the face with it and went, “Wait a second......HE’S FUCKIN RIGHT”. That song single-handedly pulled me out the muck and had me recite to myself that yeah, I’m gonna keep going. Faked it til’ I made it.
11. Demolition Lovers- Do you believe in ride or die romance?
Listen, I wrote This Is Love. I’ve read and seen Good Omens. Abso-fucking-lutely.
22. It’s Not a Fashion Statement, It’s a Deathwish- What’s the most outrageous clothing item you want to own?
That one red riding hood-inspired cloak that was really huge and flowing. I think it was for a fashion show, but I want to own that and walk around town in it every 3 am.
23. Cemetery Drive- Describe a paranormal experience you’ve had
Hm, that’s a hard one since I lean more on the skeptic end of the scale even if I am open to the idea of the paranormal. I was in a division meet once and we had to travel and we stayed at this old school. My friends went out to get food, and because I got sick in the middle of this trip, I stayed behind and was the only one in the room. I was drawing on some eggs my friends had bought earlier than morning because I was bored, saw someone in pajamas pass by me and go into the dressing room. Thought it was my classmate. I called out and asked her why she was back early. No response, thought she didn’t hear me, decided to wait until she came out.
She did not. In fact, she wasn’t even in the room. Friends came back an hour later from the store. I got super confused, told them what happened, and they all grabbed me and told me we should stay out the room. We did, but we still had to sleep there in the evening bc we didn’t have a choice lmao.

Technology gives us a glimpse into the animal mind, but do we want to know?
What would animals tell us if they could?
Image: mashable/Ambar Del Moral
When you see an orangutan play a projected video game you have some thoughts: “Animals, they’re just like us!” and “How long till she’s playing Halo?”
It’s hard not to compare the reactions of animals interacting with digital technology to our own. We might even imagine starting a cross-species conversation, given some time and software updates. But, if we could use technology to enable animals to really talk to us, would your cat’s first sentence be flattering? Probably not.
SEE ALSO: Why drones are a game-changer for animal research
A study at the Melbourne Zoo exposed six orangutans to interactive projections using an Xbox One and its Kinect motion controller. They could choose from games like “burst,” in which they touched moving dots to explode them into a circle of color, and “paint,” in which they could select colors and draw.
The researchers wanted to explore new ways the zoo could enrich the lives of the primates by supplying them with cognitive challenges, but observers could not resist thinking a dialogue was opening up.
Sarah Webber, a PhD candidate with the Microsoft Research Center for SocialNUI at the University of Melbourne, worked on the project. As well as investigating the animals’ responses, the team asked zoo visitors for their thoughts.
“What was really interesting was people started talking about what the animals were thinking, how the animals were feeling, whether they were enjoying it or not, whether it was good for them,” she explained. “‘I think he’s thinking this. I think he’s trying to play. I think he’s trying to chose a different colour.'”
In other words, we can’t help it. “When we watch animals, we’re trying to figure them out. We’re trying to think ‘how similar is this animal to me?'” she said.
Giving animals digital technology is new but not uncommon. Tablets have captivated penguins in California and a Dutch zoo is trying out a “Tinder for orangutans,” but there are technologies that more explicitly allow animals to “talk,” after a fashion.
Wired wrote about a computerized vest that allows a diabetic’s assistance dog to pull a mechanical lever in an emergency, generating an audio message: “My handler needs you to come with me.”
The next step is obvious: Figuring ways for animals to send us messages even more specific, eventually leading to genuine verbal communication. But before we bolt headfirst into this future, we should should ask if we’re ready to have a real two-way conversation with the animals we tame, keep captive or breed to eat. As Wired‘s Clive Thompson pointed out, “we might not always like what they have to say.”
If they could talk to us, it would not necessarily be pleasant, suggested Siobhan O’Sullivan, a senior lecturer in social policy at Sydney University who writes about animal welfare.
O’Sullivan pointed out that when it comes to animal life, we’re typically dealing with one of two types: Wildlife and captive animals, whether for agriculture or pets.
“The kind of animals we’re probably going to be speaking to are the animals we hold captive, and in more cases than not, their lives are probably not that wonderful,” she speculated. “I think they would report having quite an unpleasant life in many ways.”
The orangutan project successfully stirred empathy for the animals among visitors.
“If we had the capacity to ask them if they like to be in such a confined space, I think they’d say no. But I also think dumb logic actually points us to that conclusion anyway.”
And if we do open those channels of communication, say with our pet dogs, that could the first domino in a long line: Do we need to afford them more rights? Do we need to start thinking about animal privacy?
We’re a long way from that, O’Sullivan said. “The amount of communication we’re likely to achieve will be such a basic level that I can’t imagine there would be any reason … to think we’re necessarily invading the animal’s privacy,” she added. “We keep animals in zoos and watch their every move that’s terribly invasive I can’t think this would be any more problematic.”
Ultimately, the orangutan experiment was about their welfare rather than setting up a conversation. For Webber, the orangutan project successfully stirred empathy for the animals among visitors an important goal for the zoo and its mission of conservation. If visitors got the message thanks to their unstoppable inclination to anthropomorphize every penguin with a tablet, that’s no bad thing.
But even Webber thinks there’s more we can get out of our interactions with animals, and technology could help. “There’s an important role for technology to play in mediating that interaction, and helping us understand the impacts we’re having whether it’s on our cat or dog in our home, or a population of wild bandicoots in a national park,” she said.
“What do the animals want? What do they show us when we give them this technology?”
Just don’t expect any compliments from the orangutans.
