Glass Beams - Cover of Charanjit Singh - Raga Bhairav - Live 04. April 2024 at Silent Green Berlin
Musicpearls
I stumbled on this music video while kind of ruminating on the notion of what World Music might be. Glass Beams is an Australian band. Charanjit Singh was an Indian musician who had a wedding band . In 1982 he made a record in 1982 Synthesizing: Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat using the instrumentation which would later become associated with Acid House music. The record was a comercial failure, but was rediscovered in the current century.
Glass Beams is doing much more hear than "covering" Charanit Singh's composition. I am not sure what's more but quite sure there is more.
Popular Youtuber and music producer Rick Beato recently predicted that in the very near future they'll be hit AI songs. He thinks that such music will push musicians to make more complex and interesting music.
I think predicting the future is quite tricky, as things always seem to come together in unexpected ways.
The thing that popped into my mind was how music and drugs seem to intertwine in intersting ways. I have never used Iboga or Ibogaine, but I did listen to Iboga music one evening a while ago and came away with the imporessionthat the music is quite special. It's not hard to imagine it as complimentary to the drug experience.
Music is a healer. as people have long known. I no fan of AI really, but AI trained on music may reveal some of the healing potential in music. If that happens real musicians will expand on it.

Blog Post: Akali Dal’s Internal Strife: Blaming BJP and RSS Amidst Party Turmoil
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is embroiled in a heated internal conflict following its poor performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections in Punjab. The party, led by Sukhbir Singh Badal, is facing criticism from within, with factions accusing each other of conspiring with the BJP and RSS to undermine the party.
Divided Loyalties and Allegations
The SAD, traditionally a dominant force in Punjab politics, is now witnessing a fracture within its ranks. The party's internal rebellion has led to a complex situation where accusations of ties with the BJP and RSS are being hurled between factions.
The SAD’s leadership has pointed fingers at the rebel group, known as "Sudhar Lehar," alleging that their actions are part of a larger conspiracy orchestrated in Nagpur, the headquarters of the RSS. Balwinder Singh Bhunder, chairman of the SAD’s disciplinary committee, accused the rebels of conspiring with the BJP and RSS, aiming to weaken the party from within.
On June 30, the SAD expelled eight rebel leaders, including notable figures like Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and Bibi Jagir Kaur, who had been critical of Sukhbir Singh Badal’s leadership. These leaders had called for a change in the party’s top brass, citing dissatisfaction with the current leadership.
Rebels’ Counterarguments
In response, the Sudhar Lehar faction dismissed these accusations, arguing that the SAD’s leadership is using the BJP and RSS as scapegoats to avoid addressing their internal issues. Charanjit Singh Brar, one of the expelled leaders, contended that both factions have had interactions with the BJP over the years and questioned why the current allegations are being used to distract from the party’s internal problems.
The Sudhar Lehar faction noted that discussions about alliances with the BJP had been ongoing but were disrupted by the farmers’ protests, which began in February.
BJP’s Response
The state BJP has criticized the SAD for its inability to address its internal issues. BJP vice-president Subhash Verma accused the Sukhbir-led SAD of trying to divert attention from its failures by blaming others. According to Verma, the SAD’s attempts to deflect responsibility for its shortcomings are both absurd and ineffective.
Looking Ahead
As the SAD grapples with its internal strife, the blame game involving the BJP and RSS is unlikely to resolve the underlying issues within the party. With both factions continuing to clash, the future of the SAD remains uncertain as it struggles to regain its footing in Punjab politics.
For more updates on the SAD’s internal conflict and its implications for Punjab politics, stay tuned to our blog.

And when the above says 'progenitor,' it means it--this album was released in 1982, when the Roland TR-808 drum machine and TB-303 bass sequencer were both brand new technology.
If you aren't familiar with it, the 303 is...not intuitive to program
youtube
(should start around 12 minutes)
The 303 (and to some extent the 808) were adopted by late 80s electronic musicians because so many of the people who had bought them in the early 80s had very quickly decided they weren't worth the trouble--not only because of the difficulty in programming, but also because they just...didn't sound the way those people wanted their synths to sound in the early 80s--so they sold them. People continued not to want them, and eventually the people who would be most associated with acid house bought them just because they were so cheap.
And this of course makes Charanjit Singh’s work even more impressive.
cool albums you should check out 02 | Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat by Charanjit Singh
youtube
genre: acid house, Indian classical
standout tracks: Raga Todi, Raga Madhuvanti, Raga Meghmalhar
Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat is Charanjit Singh’s disco interpretation of ten ragas (think of them as melodic units meant for improvisation in Indian classical music) - listeners familiar with Indian classical music will find the same scales and influences in this album, created on old-school Roland equipment (and listeners unfamiliar with these styles of music will find this album an excellent gateway into the genre).
The extended synthesizer playouts are gorgeous against the groovy basslines on this project - it’s pure bliss for fifty minutes. I’m slightly biased, but as an Indian, it’s really cool that this album is the progenitor of the acid house genre - a genre that led to Chicago house, French touch (e.g. Daft Punk), and a large part of modern EDM.

Of 4 technical universities in Punjab, two without permanent V-C
The four technical universities are I K Gujral Punjab Technical University (IKGPTU), Maharaja Ranjit Singh PTU (MRSPTU), Shaheed Bhagat Singh State University, Ferozepur, and Sardar Beant Singh State University, Gurdaspur
Punjab has four government technical universities out of which two have been running without a permanent vice-chancellor (V-C) for long. The two include the first and largest technical university in the state which has been waiting for a permanent V-C since August 2021. To make matters worse, it is even functioning without an officiating V-C for the past around four months.
I K Gujral Punjab Technical University (IKGPTU), which is the first technical university of the state set up in 1997 in Jalandhar and later shifted to its new campus in Kapurthala district on Jalandhar-Kapurthala road.
IKGPTU was divided into two parts and a new Maharaja Ranjit Singh PTU (MRSPTU), which was formerly known as MRS State Technical University located in Bathinda, was set up in 2015 and has jurisdiction over 11 districts of the Malwa region. The previous Congress government had upgraded two government engineering colleges as deemed technical universities in 2021 ahead of the 2022 Vidhan Sabha elections. Earlier both these colleges were affiliated with IKGPTU and these are now known as Shaheed Bhagat Singh State University, Ferozepur, and Sardar Beant Singh State University, Gurdaspur.
IKGPTU’s last permanent V-C, Dr Ajay Sharma, completed his tenure in August 2021 and since then no new permanent V-C has been appointed here. The university has around 280 colleges — including technical, management, pharmacy, hotel management, commerce, etc. — affiliated with it, apart from its campus classes in various streams. Dr Sharma’s tenure was also marred by controversies that included appointment of professors as deans which was cancelled later.
Since August 2021 to September 2022 five secretaries (Technical Education), including Ramesh Kumar, Raj Kamal Chaudhuri, Vikas Garg, Rahul Bhandhari and Nilkanth A Avhad, had been appointed as officiating V-Cs. All the IAS officers, who are becoming principal secretary of the Technical Education department, are being given the charge of officiating V-C, but currently ever since the new principal secretary of Technical Education joined around four months ago, the PTU officiating V-C charge was not given because of the internal politics of PTU officials and the tussle between Punjab government and state governor, said sources. Governor had asked the state government to give the charge of officiating V-C to the senior-most dean or professor.
In the previous Congress government the name of former dean Prof Siby Jhon, who is currently head of the civil engineering department in Punjab Engineering College (PEC), Chandigarh, was cleared for the post of PTU vice-chancellor and the file was sent to the governor also, but later the file was recalled during the tenure of former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi.
The present government had started the process of appointment of permanent V-C and a committee was formed to draw up a shortlist for the job, but that committee was dissolved. A new search committee was formed recently which will suggest names for the post of new V-C and then PTU may get one in the coming months, said sources.

IELTS Writing Mock Test by English Language Testing Agency (ELTA)
English Language Testing Agency (ELTA) is an India based academic service provider devoted to the dissemination of language literacy among the non-native learners of English. Its primary objective is to devise standardized and indigenous language assessment tests for all levels of English language learners. Aimed at sharpening writing skills through accurate and detailed evaluation of writing, IELTS Writing Mock Test, available at www.ieltsmoctest.com, is an endeavor to bring our age-old consultancy services on a viable online platform.
In the detailed Evaluation Report of your Academic or General Training Writing Task 1 and Task 2 which you will get from us, we will let you know all the things in your writing on the basis of which you are awarded bands in the actual IELTS Writing Test. These are as follows:
Whether your answer is relevant to and in harmony with the demand of the question? Whether it has an appealing beginning, a convincing middle loaded with supportive arguments and an all-inclusive conclusion? If not, then you will be given suggestions regarding what and where your writing lacks and what are the things that you should do to make that particular answer almost perfect.
Whether your writing is grammatically correct and your sentences have variety and spontaneous flow? If not, then you will be acquainted with the things that you need to do in order to make it error free and bring variety and spontaneity in it.
Whether the ideas in the Writing Tasks submitted by you are logically linked to each other in a cause and effect relationship and give the feeling of a unified discourse? If not, then you will be suggested regarding what needs to be done to bring coherence or unity of ideas in your writing.
Whether your sentences and paragraphs are arranged in a cohesive whole and give birth to a well-knit writing? If not, then you will be informed regarding the ways and means to bring cohesion in your writing.
And finally whether the words that you use are appropriate and relevant in the context? If not, suggestions will be given regarding the replacement of words, wherever necessary, to make your writing sound natural, varied and interesting.
WHY SELECT THIS TEST
This is the only dedicated platform for the detailed evaluation of IELTS Academic or General Training Writing Task 1 and Task 2 on the same pattern as is used in the real IELTS test. Our specialization in and focus on writing and only writing can be gauged from the fact that we limit ourselves only to the evaluation of writing tasks and do not try to be general by evaluating other language skills. Above all, our examiner is an authority in the teaching and evaluation of writing.
Here it needs to be understood that Listening and Reading are Receptive Skills, means you receive language in spoken or written form, you comprehend it and this level of comprehension or understanding can be evaluated by you on your own without any help of a specialized evaluator by the use of thousands of standardized tests available free of cost both online as well as offline.
However, Writing and Speaking being the Productive skills expect you to produce language and in order to evaluate the quality of this produced language you need a specialized evaluator who is well-equipped to tell you where you stand and what your strengths and weaknesses are. It is this necessity of a specialized and well-equipped evaluator of written language that we intend to fulfill. Our examiner, Dr. Charanjit Singh is a Ph.D in Media Language and Functional Linguistics. In his academic career of more than 15 years as an English Language Trainer and Evaluator, he has trained numerous IELTS and TOEFL trainers who are working in reputed IELTS and TOEFL training institutes. He has agreed to personally make a minute thread-bare analysis of General Training and Academic IELTS Writing Tasks 1 and 2 and provide a detailed feedback to all the participants of our IELTS Writing Mock Test.
And it is only the accurate and detailed feedback that you need to improve your writing. Undoubtedly, such a feedback can be received only from an expert human evaluator and not automatically from answer keys as is the case in Listening and Reading Tests. And that is why, you need to select this IELTS Writing Mock Test.
THREE-TIERED EVALUATION
And yet there is another reason to go for this mock test. The evaluation of the IELTS Writing Mock Test is three-tiered. Each of the two writing tasks submitted by a candidate is first evaluated by two different experts in the field. These experts send their evaluation reports to the Principal Evaluator. The Principal Evaluator, first of all, evaluates both the writing tasks independently and then goes through the evaluation reports of the experts that have been submitted to him. Finally, a detailed evaluation report is prepared in which corrections, comments, observations and suggestions made by all the three evaluators are incorporated and synthesized and it is this detailed report that is sent to the candidate at his or her registered e-mail. The advantage of this rigorous three-tiered evaluation is that it eliminates the possibility of even the slightest error of judgment and just by attempting a single IELTS Writing Mock Test a candidate can get the most detailed and accurate assessment of his or her writing and also suggestions to improve it. It is for this reason that a candidate has to wait for 4 days for the evaluation report. In no case and at no cost we can speedify this process. Expecting an evaluation report on your writing before the stipulated time means asking us to compromise on quality of evaluation. Kindly don’t say us for that.

For the uninitiated the composer of the music on this record is also a master craftsman who throughout the 1980s combined his off-the-wall ideas and sky high expectations using craft, experimental technology and a trusted team of participants to help concoct some truly bizarre local produce in mass quantity without compromise. Ilaiyaraaja, known to his family as Gnanadesikan, and to many of his zillion strong fan base as Isaignani (meaning musical genius in Tamil) represents the epitome of a nostalgic national treasure especially for a single solo composer in the Tamil micro music industry. His euphoric electrified music of the 70s and 80s (and beyond) captures every essence of joy and jubilation and is still used in celebration as much as it is celebrated in its own right. Ilaiyaraaja, a man of humble physical stature, sparsely equipped with a self-sufficient studio of compact electronic devices literally COMMANDS celebration with his single handed symphonies. Defying any fair comparisons in the Western world (besides inadequate parallels to Joe Meek and Jean-Pierre Massiera) it is also virtually impossible to find similar electronic mavericks in the East. Imagine a mixture between Turkey’s Ilhan Mimaroglu and the acidic synthesiser ragas of Charanjit Singh and you're still left short of the songs. Essentially, Ilaiyaraaja is to the local Kollywood film industry what RD Burman/Bappi Lahiri or M.Ashraf/Tafo are to Bollywood and Lollywood but then remember that Ilaiyaraaja is a one-man band, with a single vision and zero competition. This compilation reveals more tasty treats from Finders Keepers ongoing obsession with The Crown Prince Of Tamil Pop - focusing on his growth in the mid-1980s as a confident young composer adding freak pop fuel to the flickering flame of Kodambakkam's Kollywood film industry, while embracing domestic synthesiser technology and fusing the power of elec- tro and synth pop to his Carnatic canon.

Day 9 - 9th June 1984.
Following the executions of surviving pilgrims within the Gurdwara complex, the remaining survivors are rounded up, detained by the army forces and charged as terrorists:
"379 of the alleged ‘most dangerous terrorists’ were forced to sign a common confessional statement and thereafter served a common charge sheet that they were all Bhindranwale’s closest associates and comrades-in-arms engaged in waging war against the state... The evidence collected established beyond doubt that none of the Jodhpur detainees we succeeded in profiling are ‘terrorists’ but rather all of them are completely innocent, ordinary persons, whose only crime was that they had all gone to or were coming from the Golden Temple as devotees or pilgrims visiting the Golden Temple for the Gurpurab on June 3, 1984 or farmers gone to the Temple to deliver village donations of grain to the S.G.P.C. or students gone to pay obeisance at their holiest religious shrine, the Harmandir Sahib." ~ Citizens for Democracy; Report to the Nation: Oppression in Punjab, Bombay, 1985.
These detainees were detained for up to 5 years, before in the face of worldwide condemnation and protest they were finally released.
An article that was published in India Today (30/9/84) details the most vulnerable of the "suspected terrorists" arrested in June 1984 and detained in maximum security prisons:
"These were the other victims of Operation Bluestar, little children, some only two years old, who got rounded up. Since then, 39 children have been languishing in two Ludhiana jails. The youngest of these children, Jasbir Kaur, is only two years old, her sister Charanjit Kaur is four, and her brothers, Harinder and Balwinder, are six and twelve. There is four-year old Rinku whose father died during the army operation and whose mother has been missing since. Like the rest of the 'infant terrorists', Rinku had to go through gruelling interrogation. When asked where his mother was he replied, "I don't know". Asked where his father was, he said, "Killed with a gun". Why his stomach was so big; "Because I eat clay". Their ordeal began in early June when they were picked up around the Temple and packed into camps in Amritsar and Jalandhar. Two central agencies, the Central Bureau of lnvestigation (CBI) and the Intelligence Bureau (IB) began their questioning. There were long, intimidating sessions. The children cried and begged to be sent home. But it went on for days. Their little finger prints were taken and IB sleuths set about verifying their bonafides. One interrogating officer admitted that officials were not moved by the children's cries."
The following quote is from an Indian Army circular which was distributed in June 1984, proving that all practicing Sikhs were considered terrorists and were targeted by the Indian government:
"Some of our innocent countrymen were administered an oath in the name of religion to support extremists and actively participated in the act of terrorism. These people wear a miniature kirpan round their neck and are called "Amritdharis". They have to be subdued to achieve the final aim of restoring peace in the country. Any knowledge of the "Amritdharis" who are dangerous people and pledged to commit murder, arson and acts of terrorism should be immediately brought to the notice of the authorities. These people may appear harmless from outside but they are basically committed to terrorism."
The government orders the shooting of unarmed protesters in New Delhi, Sri Nagar (Kashmir) and Panjab.
Some firing still continues within the Sri Darbar Sahib complex.
