SC grants a week’s parole to Rajiv Gandhi assassination convict AG Perarivalan

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday extended parole of AG Perarivalan, one of the convicts in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, by one week. The apex court also directed the Tamil Nadu government to provide police protection to him to enable him for getting medical check up in hospital. Earlier this month, Perarivalan was taken to a private hospital in Villupuram for a medical check-up, hospital sources said. He was treated as an outpatient and tests were performed as he is suffering from urological problems, the hospital sources said. Later, he was taken to another private hospital on Tiruchy Road for a general check-up. Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has told the Supreme Court that the Tamil Nadu governor has to take a call on the grant of remission to Rajiv Gandhi assassination convict AG Perarivalan, who is serving life sentence in the case. In its affidavit filed on November 20, the CBI said that Perarivalan is not the subject matter of further investigation carried out by the CBI-led Multi-Disciplinary Monitoring Agency (MDMA) which is conducting a probe on the ‘larger conspiracy’ aspect as per the mandate of Jain Commission report. The top court is hearing a plea of 46-year-old Perarivalan seeking suspension of his life sentence in the case till the MDMA probe is completed. (With inputs from agencies)
