[Vren] stepped into the Indigo Goblet with the expectation of finding a cheap room and a quiet drink. What he got was a shout of “You!” and every head in the taproom turned in his direction. A woman in leather armour bearing the mark of the town guard was barging her way towards him. She was tall and broad; pale and red-haired—the very essence of Inverein womanhood—and evidently furious. He palmed the hilt of the new sword at his hip. “Oh, just try it,” she said, flexing her fingers around her own weapon. “It won’t go as easy for you as it did last time.” Vren stared at her blankly. “I have no idea who you are.” She yanked down the collar of her shirt, exposing a scar that wrapped across her neck. “How about now?” A burning building, flames leaping into the night sky; what should have been a simple job gone catastrophically wrong thanks to Sorrow and his merry band of amateurs. Shadows inconsistent, spitting him out in all the wrong places, including right in front of a Willowtown guard. He hated colatteral damage—deaths he wasn’t even paid for, a waste of time adding nothing but risk—but there had been little choice. “You survived.” He was more annoyed than surprised. Everything about that night had been sloppy. “I survived,” she said.
