DEAR EDUCATIONALLY NEGLECTED HOMESCHOOLERS

I’ve gathered some resources and tips and tricks on self-educating after educational neglect. This is only what I did and what I know helped me. I’m about to graduate college with honors after having no education past the age of 8. I wouldn’t be here without the following. Everything is free, and at/well above the standard for education in the US.

The holy grail: Khan Academy. Nearly every course you could take is available here, in order and by grade level. Their open-source free courses rival some of the college classes I’ve taken. This is your most solid resource.

For inattentive types: Crash Course offers a variety of courses that are snappy, entertaining, and extremely rewarding. They work for my ADHD brain. They also have college prep advice, which is essential if you’re looking to go to higher education with no classroom experience.

To catch up on your reading: There are certain books that you may have read had you gone to school that you’ve missed out on. This list is the most well-rounded and can fill you in on both children’s books and classic novels that are essential or at least extremely helpful to be familiar with. You can find a majority of these easily at a local library (and some for free in PDF form online low key). There are a few higher level classics in here that I’d highly recommend. If it doesn’t work for you, I’d always recommend asking your local librarian.

*BE AWARE* The book list I recommend suggests you read Harry Potter books, and given their transphobic author you may or may not want to read them. If you choose to, I’d highly recommend buying the books secondhand or borrowing from a library to avoid financially supporting a living author with dangerous and damaging views.

TEST, TEST, TEST: Again, Khan Academy is your go-to for this. I don’t personally like standardized testing, but going through SAT and ACT courses was the best way I found to really reveal my gaps so that I could supplement.

Finally: As much as you can, enjoy the process. Education can be thrilling and teach you so much about yourself, and help shape your view of the world. It can get frustrating, but I’d like to encourage you that everyone can learn. No pace is the perfect pace, and your learning style is the right learning style for you. In teaching yourself, be patient, be kind, and indulge in the subjects you really enjoy without neglecting others. You are your teacher. Give yourself what others chose not to.

Let me tell you about my time in Party Mode tonight, because it was nice:

First, I enter to see only two people in the lobby. The two people are fighting each other in skillshot, and one side only has 50 points while the other person, a ribbon girl, is in the thousands and they keep landing hits on the poor person with 50. I was like ‘wow, this is wild yall’.

When the match was finished, the person that lost left the lobby, and so it was just me-- a lone silver Misango main-- and the Ribbon Girl. We did the ‘woop’s and the ‘whiwhi’s and the ‘eebeebee’s at each other, quickly gaining a friendship. 

Little did we know, this friendship would last throughout the rest of the night.

We managed to be the only two in the lobby for the next three matches, until two players joined (the guest and the host). The Ribbon Girl main and I were teamed-up against them in a tag battle. We ‘whiwhi’ed at each other happily, and in warning to the other players.

The beginning of the match was very one-sided. We were destroying them, until they lost connection. Ribbon Girl and I ‘whiwhi’ed each other in congratulations. When we left that game, four more people were in the lobby. Amongst them was a Kid Cobra main and a Sprintron main. 

Throughout the rest of the night, the Ribbon Girl and I were partners in 23 team-based battles.

skip forward a few battles. By the time one battle is exited, I start quietly ‘eebeebee’ing and eventually, the whole group of 8 that was present join-in. My then friends, the Kid Cobra, Springtron and Ribbon Girl, copied me exactly. We took turns doing this. 

The next battle I had with the Kid Cobra was on Twintelle’s stage. We ended-up both on the farthest ends of the stages, spamming blocks at each other and jumping from side-to-side. The game ended in a draw. When we exited the game, we were both happily ‘whiwhi’ing at each other, and the Ribbon Girl who hadn’t anyone to play with while we were fighting ‘whiwhi’d right back at us.

I tried to spam blocks when facing against my other friend, the Springtron. After ten straight seconds of them never moving in response, they threw a punch and we fought as we should.

A few matches later, a new Springtron main joins. This one was named Thomas, and the other 1234. We were put into two consecutive matches together. One against Hedlok, one fighting over Hedlok. At the end of the final hedlok battle with us three, we all ‘whiwhi’d at each other rapidly. Casper, the friendly Helix Main, showed up for a one-time event where he ended-up ‘whiwhi’ing with the Springton, Kid Cobra and Ribbon Girl mains alongside me. Truly a positive moment.

A few more full or half lobbies of friendship and ‘whiwhi’ing, and the Ribbon Girl, who had had a 123-match-streak, decided they would be off for the day (Since they were in Japan). They made a final ‘whi’ and left. I did so too, and I saw the Kid Cobra follow suit.

She was fortunate, then, to meet a kindred chaotic spirit: an adventurous young boy named Walter Fitzroy. The two were inseperable, and in their teenage years, they became mercenaries. Eventually this duo grew into the Cracked Talon — a powerful mercenary operation. It was here she earned her nom de guerre: Mad Maggie. But when rival warlord Sandringham Kelly signed a treaty with the Syndicate, Maggie's hopes for an independent Salvo were ruined, and Fuse abandoned her for the Games, leaving Maggie very mad indeed...

By sabotaging Fuse's entrance into the Apex Games, Maggie planned to expose how weak the Syndicate was, in hopes it would spark rebellion on Salvo. Fuse would assemble a team to take down Maggie... only for the pair to have a heart to heart where they came to accept each other's choices: Fuse will always follow the fun, and Maggie will always follow the cause.

It seemed as though Maggie fell to her death after that exchange... but she was apprehended by the Syndicate, and sentenced to fight to the death in the Apex Games. So she will: just not hers.
