i’ve never been super into zukka, and i don’t usually read fanfic, so my explanation likely won’t hit all the points since i’m not familiar with them. also note that while i’m a poc, i am light skinned and japanese (similar ethnicity as zuko is implied to be).

that said, the biggest points here are firstly, the common z//utara trope of the fire monarch. secondly, the dynamic between the two and the archetypes (based on racist tropes) they are often written as.

the z//utara tropes. fire monarch tropes (fire lady katara/fire prince sokka) are bad because it makes a water tribe person, someone directly negatively impacted by the fire nation monarchy, part of the fn monarchy. it also comes with moving away from the water tribe and living full time in the fn. this means that these characters are made to abandon the culture they are, in canon, very connected to, which reeks of gentrification. it’s also plain insensitive to the pain that the fire nation has caused the water tribes... no water tribe person would want to live the rest of their life in the halls of the people who gave the orders to commit genocide against their people.

the dynamic/archetypes. the dynamic between sokka and zuko is generally that zuko is the fragile and highly targeted firelord in distress, and sokka is the strong, dependable warrior who protects him. this is racist on two fronts. sokka is a dark skinned moc. many darkskinned people, especially men, are stereotyped as strong, warriorlike, uncivilized, protectors. this is harmful because it suggests that men of color are dangerous, other, and violent. only portraying sokka as the protector encourages this harmful view of men of color. this ‘strong’ stereotype also leads to a disregard for the emotional and mental wellbeing of moc. it means that sokka’s feelings are often pushed down to make room for zuko’s. 

zuko is a light skinned asian man. light skinned asian men are often infantilized, and portraying zuko as a damsel in distress only fuels this stereotype. this happens to overlap with the fact that a considerable part of the fandom considers zuko to be neurodivergent/autistic coded, a group who are also constantly infantilized. when he isn’t infantilized, he is sexualized. he is a sixteen year old child from a children’s show, you should not be sexualizing him (either of them) at all.

not to mention the ‘top vs bottom’ dynamic that many people obsess over in queer pairings. disregarding the disgusting idea of sexualizing children, this also plays into the racist and homophobic dynamics: that the light skinned, feminine character plays the submissive role, and the dark skinned, masculine character plays the domineering role. queer men are not substitutes for already misogynistic heterosexual dynamics (submissive woman vs dominant man). they are not self inserts for heterosexual women (straight women imagining themselves as zuko, therefore deciding to feminize the bottom character). 

there are many more layers to this, i’m sure. but this is the most of it. dark skinned men of color are not violent, dominating protectors and deserve attention and care. light skinned men of color are not helpless, dumb babies, they deserve to be listened to and respected. queer stories are not for cishet women to insert themselves into. shipping two men does not make you a gay ally, educating yourself and supporting queer people does. white people/cishet women do not clown on this post. queer poc feel free to add.

the thing about that is like, if they dont identify as trans men then they're not trans men! the reason these labels exist isnt to categorize people based on how we see their experience, its for people to have the language to describe themselves!

i think a lot of yall get stuck on the idea of dysphoria being something that makes someone transgender, but thats not something i believe, so thats a large part of why an argument based in transmedicalism would fall flat on this subject... people have the right to self-identify, just like how there are trans people who dont medically transition, there are also cis people who do, and you cant force them to identify as transgender if thats not how they feel!

its def important that ppl within our community learn that as trans ppl we arent the only ppl who can have a complicated relationship with gender. i've mentioned it a couple times before, but there are a lot of factors at play with regard to someones gender + presentation + dysphoria + decision to medically transition! race, sexuality, and things of that nature can play a part in the way someone experiences these things... for ref, this post puts it well; even a cishet person of color can have a more complex relationship with gender than a white lgbt person, and some further explanation on that in a post here as well! like, for example, historically (yes, even within lgbt spaces and relationships) black women have been and continue to be treated as though they are more masculine than white women because of their race, and although that isnt exactly what you asked, thats why i say that peoples experiences in a gendered society vary, that can cause someone to have a different relationship with gender, something you or i may not be able to relate to

and really anyone can feel alienated from belonging to their assigned gender with those factors at play to influence it, and that doesnt always cause them to feel like they belong to another gender either. there are many lesbians who feel that their only ties to womanhood are through their sexuality and love of other women, its not uncommon for them to use pronouns other than she/her, or to go on testosterone, or to get top surgery, but at the end of the day they can still tell you explicitly that they do not identify as trans men, and it wouldnt make sense for someone to assign them that label.

you didnt mention it here, but to get it outta the way: the last thing i've seen argued is that women are using up & taking spots in line for life-saving resources that transmeds believe trans men should be entitled to... honestly i think its kind of batshit how the ppl saying this don't realize how stupid they sound by advocating for the medicalization of transness, having to jump through all these hoops for these treatments, then somehow placing the blame on other people looking for treatment. like, if you were a cancer patient needing chemo you wouldn't go around blaming other cancer patients as the reason you arent getting treatment, right? it makes no sense, and we should be talking about the issues with the way access to hrt and affirming surgeries are set up rather than prying into the personal lives of others to see who "really" needs it the most, yknow

More white people in the Agents of SHIELD fandom need to take more ownership of Grant Ward.  Here’s why.

When you look at Muslim communities and you look at radicalization and ISIS religious and community leaders have plans in place to reach out to at risk youth in their communities.  They actually work with anti-white radicalization in Europe combating nazi behavior.  

Fact.

Nazis are very real. They’re in power and they’re in the US government and throwing around the word as a descriptor is fine but using it to describe Brett Dalton and not making that explicitly clear is gross because it affects real people.

I propose however that Stand With Ward actually actively own that the guy is a nazi and there are thousands of at risk young men, possibly young women, and families who should be given an opportunity to see something better.

Minorities are being oppressed day to day in and out and they need to take care of themselves but they thrive and work together.  They know what oppression looks like. Grant Ward, Kylo Ren, Loki, Fandom has a history of problematic white men whose existence is excused purely because people either think they’re hot or they think they need to be pitied or people get angry and don’t think that they need to get involved when the concept of white radicalization and white terror comes up.  Whatever side of the argument you’re on, seeing them as human beings who have fallen and lost their way or seeing them as angry monsters, white people, we need to own them and we need to own their issues and their mistakes.

Face facts. If you’re anti-ward you need to own what he represents. There are DOZENS of organizations in the UK as well that promote this. If you hate grant ward take five minutes then come back and realize that there are probably five real Grant wards out there right now that you can actually HELP by donating to these organizations, getting out and marching, squashing their platform, and funding those people with balls of goddamn steel who own that they were a part of a hate group and are working to get others out.  Wasting your time harassing others for a fictional character and a fictional thing when there are real ways you could help people is fucking stupid. If you’re pissed about Nick Spencer volunteer and donate.  If you cut off the head two more will take it’s place but if you stab this shit in the heart then it’s gonna go away forever.

If you’re a Grant Ward fan don’t force your gross and creepy beliefs on other people, stop trying to beat a dead horse and let’s band together to do something GOOD to make this world a better place if we were that affected by this character.  I get what it’s like to want to pity the guy.  I’ve been there. I was abused. I was a rape victim. I was jailed and I fucking saw shit but coming out and seeing ward LOSE taught me two things. 1) there needs to be better representation for people who suffer from abuse and jail and it needs to encompass everyone not just cishet white dudes 2) I need to own that there but for the grace of god go I. Go we. Go ALL  of us.  Go every self-righteous white person who doesn’t feel connected and doesn’t have a solid family footing.

So take five minutes. Read about this. Acknowledge Ward’s a white terrorist but instead of just going about your day actually DO something about this because other communities.
