HOME ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN FOR KITCHEN COUNTER-TOPS
Considering marble countertops? Discover everything you need to know about the popular surface before you start picking out slabs
When it comes to selecting kitchen countertops, marble remains the top choice for many homeowners. It’s no surprise that marble countertops and backsplashes are so popular—the material has been attracting fans for a millennium. “Marble is a natural material with a great variety, depending on which species you select and how it’s cut,” says Rahul Bhandari, the MD of Bhandari Marble Group behind. “It creates a lovely natural pattern, which you don’t get with a lot of artificial materials.
9 important tips for choosing a white marble slab
Things to Remember
Among marble options, white marble takes the cake. “You won’t find anything as white in nature as white marble,” adds Evan Nussbaum, a vice president at Stone Source in New York. “You just don’t get that color and kind of figuring in any other type of natural stone.” But marble is not a perfect product. While good-quality marbles, such as the world-famous products from Carrara, Italy, are dense and relatively nonporous—which makes them durable and stain-resistant—they also have weaknesses.
A non-foliated metamorphic rock, marble is generally composed of calcium carbonate (the same ingredient used in antacids such as Tums) or magnesium carbonate, which react to acids. An acidic kitchen liquid like lemon juice or vinegar can etch marble, leaving a dull, whitish mark where it has slightly eaten away the surface, even after the marble has been sealed.
But as long as you choose carefully, know what to expect, and care for white marble countertops, they can be a beautiful, functional choice for your kitchen design that lasts a lifetime. Ahead, we’ve rounded up expert tips on how to choose the perfect slab of marble—so if you’re on the market for marble countertops, keep reading!
1. If you’re concerned about stains, stick with white marble
Although many people automatically think of creamy, white stone when they think of marble, “there are hundreds of varieties,” says DC Bhandari, founder, and director of the India-based stone company Bhandari Marble Group, including types that are taupe, green, gold, red, and black. For marble kitchen countertops, however, Nussbaum generally recommends sticking with white marble. Because acid etching leaves a whitish mark, it is much more noticeable on colored marble than on white marble. “We put a thousand caveats on any dark marble or non-white marble being used for kitchen countertops,” he says, “but it’s a personal choice.”
While classic Italian white marbles like Calacatta and Statuario are generally excellent quality and a great kitchen idea, Nussbaum points out that equally high-quality marbles are available closer to home, including Vermont Danby and Colorado Yule.
2. Consider how the different marble slabs will come together
Every stone slab is slightly different, so it’s ideal to select the exact pieces of stone that will be used for your countertops. “There’s an art to marble—selecting the slabs and understanding where the veining is going to be located on the countertop,” says Rahul Bhandari. “You want to artfully place the markings so that it’s almost like a painting.”
At the same time, it’s important to consider how different pieces come together. “The longer the piece you can get without any seams, the better,” says Rahul Bhandari. “If you do have seams, it’s always nice to book-match the marble,” so adjacent pieces have a mirrored appearance.
3. Take veining patterns into account
Every quarry is different, but it’s possible to cut certain types of marble blocks two different ways to achieve unique veining patterns. Crosscut, or Fleury cut, results in stone slabs with “an open flowered pattern,” says Nussbaum, which looks fairly random and is ideal for book-matching. Vein cut, or stria to, slices the block the other way to achieve a linear, striped appearance.
“Designers have used both cuts to create some fantastic looks,” says DC Bhandari. “They may use a vein cut on the wall and cross cut on the floor.”
4. You can transform the look of marble with different finishes
“The whole stone industry has been going through a massive wave of technology, and it’s transforming the product,” says DC Bhandari, noting that there are now more ways than ever to finish stone, including different brushing and polishing techniques. An orange-peel-like texture is possible, he notes, which “might be called a leather, brushed, or river-wash finish.”
But the most popular choices remain polished, which looks glossy, or honed, which appears matte. For homeowners concerned about acid etching, Nussbaum recommends a honed finish. “On a polished finish, etching is going to turn it dull and be more visible,” he says. “With honed, you’re dulling an already dull finish, so it disguises it.”
5. Consider curving the edges of your marble Counter-top
Besides its natural beauty, there’s a reason marble has historically been so popular for sculpture: It’s easy to work with tools. Add modern computer numerical control milling machines to the equation and almost anything’s possible for kitchen decorating. There are countless edge profiles to choose from, but Rahul Bhandari prefers a simple eased edge, which takes the sharpness off a straight 90-degree corner. DC Bhandari points out that a bull’s nose, which has the profile of a half-circle, is also a timeless favorite and functional winner. “Hard stones like marble are brittle, so if you hit a 90-degree corner with something hard, it will chip,” he says. “With a curve, it’s highly unlikely that it’s going to chip.”
To give thin ¾-inch stone the look of a thicker slab, Zaheer says it’s possible to use a mitre joint at the edge of the countertop to add a thicker face with an almost seamless appearance. “You can build up a really nice thick-looking piece without having to use a thick slab,” he says. It’s even possible to engrave the edge of a white marble countertop with a pattern of your choosing, says Cherrington, noting that Lapicida has developed marble tables featuring a carved brogue pattern on the edge in collaboration with designer Bethan Gray.
However, the best way to live with marble countertops may simply be to accept that they will patina over time. “If you’ve been to an old bakery or pizza shop and seen how white marble patinas, and like it,” says Brinda Somaya, “then it could be the perfect material for you.”
6. Call the marble facility ahead of your visit
“Call the slab marble facility in advance to inquire about whether they have marble slabs that meet the color, type, square footage, and dimensions you require,” suggests India-based interior designer Kapil Gupta. “Let them know when you’re coming and ask them to organize a tour points out the various slabs of marble they have. This will also allow the supplier to pull out their various slab marbles in advance so that when you arrive, they are taking you directly to the selections that meet your needs.”
7. Know the difference between cracks and fissures in your marble
Cracks are a sign that the marble has been dropped or improperly handled. Fissures, though, are entirely different. “A fissure differs from a crack in that it’s a naturally occurring feature in the stone and does not change the plane of the marble surface,” says Brinda Somaya. “You should be able to slide your nail across a fissure without it catching. Depending on the look you are trying to achieve, fissures may be acceptable—say, if you’re looking for a stone that will give you a more rustic look. Fissures don’t change the integrity of the stone; they are part of the stone’s character.”
8. Ask about the origin of the marble
“These days, white marble such as Calacatta and Statuario is currently in high demand. As such, some marble suppliers will call their white marble with veins Calacatta marble. But it won’t be authentic, rather just white stone with veins that originates from China or some other part of the world,” explains Shubham Gupta. “True Calacatta originates from mountain quarries in Carrara, Italy. The same is true for Statuario: True Statuario marble originates from Italy.”
9. Maintain your marble countertops by getting a sealed finish
Finishing marble countertops with a penetrating sealer is essential for long-term performance. Acids will still etch the surface, but if the countertop has a honed finish, an etched mark can usually be removed by scrubbing with a Comet paste using a Scotch-Brite pad, he says.
If it’s a polished surface, it will require different abrasives and technical skills to clean the marble, which might best be left to a professional. If the marble does get a stain, it can often be removed with an alkaline poultice that gradually pulls the offending material out of the stone as it dries. But any of these interventions will also strip the sealer, he notes, so it needs to be reapplied after the repair. “The good thing about marble is that you can always sand it down or polish it again,” says Hammed Ansari. “With a lot of other materials, once you damage it, you can’t do that

Arch House in Brooklyn, New York
Oct 20, 2020
Arch House in Brooklyn
Design Architects: Barker Associates Architecture Office
Location: Brooklyn, New York, United States, USA
The Arch House project is a triplex for a young couple who travel extensively for business and wanted the feeling of a quiet sanctuary for their new home.
They partnered with BDDW to provide furnishings throughout the house. The existing building is a relatively compact Anglo-Italianate townhouse circa 1860, and a three-story extension was added to expand the living space.
The house’s signature arched doorway and front window were the inspiration for much of the detailing for the renovated spaces. Arched openings connect the dining space to the foyer as well as to the kitchen through a butler’s pantry.
The generous kitchen spans the entire width of the house and is designed for socializing while cooking, with a large central marble island and extensive countertop space. The ceilings were raised on the parlor floor to visually and spatially open out the space toward the rear yard, which is framed by a full wall of steel doors and accessed from a rear deck. The centerpiece of the living room is a plaster fluted fireplace surround.
The existing wood stair and handrail were restored and the skylight above was replaced in the shape of an oval to match the geometry of the stairwell. The master suite occupies the second floor. A library and office with original moldings and fireplace overlook the street. The bedroom, a plaster, and marble master bath are sequestered through more arched openings via a raised passageway toward the rear. The bedroom opens onto a balcony through more steel doors. The third floor is configured as a level for children, guests, and caregivers.

Color Series: White Countertops
While black countertops are dramatic, white countertops provide a foundation for various design styles and make the illusion of space in Kitchen. Marble and Granite carries nearly thousand of white countertops varieties. Choose from natural stone like marble and granite or engineered stone like CaesarStone.
For the whitest white, Crystal Glass offers Crystallized White and Milky White slabs in polished 2cm and 3cm grades. CaesarStone's Blizzard and Pure White quartz surfaces provide a small amount of variation within substance for subtle hints of gray and tan. Nougat and Eggshell are beautiful neutral colors that work well with cool and warm earth tones.
The distinctive patterns of marble create white countertops with a twist, including veins of gray, silver, and even greens and yellows. Supai and Guatemalan Danby provide fairly consistent color with little veining. In contrast, the dramatic patterns found within the Egeo Ondulato and Calcutta Original adds visual interest to your surfaces.
Granite provides similar variations among white varieties. Bethel White and London, White holds consistent color and is like blank slates for your kitchen or bath design. The exotic Golden Romano from UK streams tan, gold, and black through its white base.

Statuario Marble
Statuario marble is, without doubt, the most beautiful Marble available in the World. It is the epitome of style and elegance and has been utilized as a symbol of sophistication and status in interior design for centuries. We are often asked about Statuario marble by engineers, architects, interior designers, luxury builders, and end-users. We will discuss the traits of Statuario marble along with its most common uses in architecture:
Statuario marble contains heavy, bold gray veining mixed with thinner patterns. … Application: Statuario marble is an ideal stone for indoor applications such as kitchen countertops and backsplashes, bathroom vanities, and floor tiles.
What is Statuario Marble?
Statuario marble is a striking and exclusive bright white natural marble, its beautiful grey veining, and its rich, bold patterns. It is arguably the most white marble in the marble World. Statuario marble often contains heavy grey veining throughout with unique and beautiful patterns. Statuario marble from the mountain quarries of Statuario, above Carrara in Italy. We are one of the leading manufacturers, suppliers, and Exporter of the Statuario marble all around the world, and its limited availability, coupled with its high demand, make it a real statement in any home, villa, hotel, hospital, and residential or commercial projects.
Best Uses for Statuario Marble
Given its prestige status, Statuario marble is unsurprisingly commonly used as a focal point of any Building. Most of our clients use it for stunning Flooring, Elevation, Decoration and countertops, and backsplashes or as large floor tiles. Luxury bathrooms are equally good uses for Statuario marble as it’s the perfect material for a vanity area or even as eye-catching flooring. Statuario marble is not a good material for external projects. It’s equally popular with our hotel clients where it can be used as part of a statement reception area or boardroom, in 5-star hotels and can often be seen in religious buildings such as temples and churches. Statuario marble was the marble of choice for carving lavish statues and was the stone used for Michelangelo’s famous ‘David’ masterpiece.
Caring for Statuario Marble
Statuario marble must be properly maintained and cared for to ensure it keeps its stunning looks over time. Statuario Marble must be sealed before use. Spills should be wiped up quickly to prevent staining and regular cleaning is recommended. We will happily advise you on how to take care of your particular type of Statuario marble.

The intricate veining of our Statuario marble complements the minimalist features in this modern kitchen and Bathroom.
While Italy has always been known as the home of the world’s most beautiful marble, it has some competition these days. As it turns out, some of the most breath-taking, durable marble in the world is right in our back yard—in Vermont!
Vermont may be more recognized for maple syrup and cheese than fine natural stone and historically significant architecture, but the famous Danby Marble Quarry in Vermont’s Dorset Mountain has been producing amazing marble for over 100 years. It was the first marble quarry in the United States and it’s the largest underground marble quarry in the world! Established in the 1850s, the outside of the quarry looks the same today as it did back then. Inside, the quarry twists and turns over a mile-and-a-half deep.
The famous Danby Marble Quarry in Vermont’s Dorset Mountain has been producing amazing marble for over 100 years.
You’re likely wondering what makes Danby Marble so special. Marble is marble, right? Well, that’s not entirely true. Danby Marble is an exceptionally durable marble. It’s a very dense stone that is less likely to stain than other types of marble. Danby Marble has the lowest absorption rate of any kind of marble, ranging between .06 to .08 percent. By comparison, Bianco Carrara’s rate is .13 percent, Statuario is .15 percent and Arabescato Vagli and Calacatta Delicato are .17 percent and .18 percent, respectively. What this means is that Danby Marble is far less likely to absorb stain-causing substances that might cause permanent damage to the stone.
Marble from the Danby Quarry has played an important role in U.S. history, further adding to its appeal. Danby varieties have been used on some of the most famous structures in America such as the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, the United States Supreme Court, and Arlington National Amphitheatre in D.C., as well as the Massachusetts State House in Boston, the Beinecke Library at Yale, the Court of Appeals in Albany, and the Jacob Javits Federal Building exterior landscaping in New York City. Plus, since it’s quarried right here in the United States, purchasing Danby marble helps to support U.S. jobs and the local economy, not to mention the pride that comes with owning such a beautiful stone that’s “Made in the USA.”
The average block size of marble coming from the Carrara.
The most popular marble that comes from the Carrara quarry is Statuario marble. With soft grey and gold veins, it is a beautiful choice for elegant kitchen countertops or showers, vanities, and tub surrounds in the bath. While Statuario marble is most popular, it makes up less than ten percent of all the marble quarried in the mountain. Because so little is quarried, this causes a high demand for Statuario marble.
One of the oldest Statuario marble to come from the quarry is Carrara. White in color with a mix of white and grey in the background, this variety has a long history of use throughout the World. Examples of other varieties of marble from the Carrara quarry include:
Statuario veining with subtle hints of White in the background
Statuario White with Grey diagonal veins with a very white background.
Statuario marble Dramatic and stunning swirls of grey and white.
Statuario marble: Darker grey veins, often compared to Carrara marble.
Statuario marble to grey veins typically running diagonally or horizontally
Crystal Stratus Statuario marble with a touch of peach crystalline veins
And the newest color to come from the Statuario Quarry, Florentine parole will be available this summer. A deep purple-grey tone with the same durability as all the Statuario marble
If you’ve been considering Italian marble for your project, be sure to check out all of the options from Vermont before you make a final choice. Visit one of our factory outlet showroom locations where we can show you all the styles of Danby marble that are available. We can even show you how they compare to Italian varieties since we carry those too. Either way, you choose, your project is sure to bring you joy for decades—even centuries—to come!
What’s so great about Statuario marble?
Statue of David
Sculpted out of Statuario marble between 1501-1504, marble statue by Michelangelo’s “David” is a testament to the longevity of Statuario marble.
Q: We’re shopping for natural stone for our kitchen remodel. We like marble and were told that we “have to” go with Statuario marble. We’re just wondering why. What’s so great about Statuario marble? Is it better than other marble?
A: The most famous marble in the world indeed comes from Italy, specifically the Carrara region. This is where artists such as Michelangelo and Donatello used Statuario marble to create some of the world’s most treasured works of art that have withstood the test of time. Statuario marble is in high demand. It’s beautiful, durable, and brings with it a reputation for luxury. For this reason, many prefer authentic Italian marble.
Statuario marble is considered to be superior by many due to its purity, durability, and beautiful white color. The fact that many buildings, sculptures, and other works of art made centuries ago out of Statuario marble still exist today is considered a testament to its longevity.
Part of the reason for the purity and durability of Statuario marble is the way it was formed. Statuario Marble is crystallized limestone. When limestone a sedimentary rock is met with high temperature and great pressure, large crystals form and bind together to create marble a metamorphic rock. The intense heat destroys most of the impurities once found in the stone. Left behind are large sections of white marble with varied colored veins running through it. The color and boldness of the veins vary with the amount and type of minerals that are present in the limestone. This naturally varies based on the location of the marble, making every marble slab unique.
Another reason that Statuario marble is thought to be superior comes simply from the rich stone working heritage of Italy. They were the first to streamline and perfect quarrying methods still used today. We have set very high standards for quality control and do everything with precision. We are still thought of as some of the most skilled cutters and carvers in the stone world today.
Let’s look at Statuario marble, for example. Since it comes from only one quarry in the world located in Tuscany, it’s in very high demand. This makes the price of Statuario marble higher than other marble types on the market. But be aware that since this marble is rare, it is also often duplicated, without the end-users knowledge.
Sometimes slabs will be cut and tagged as “Statuario” when they may have been quarried in countries like China or Vietnam, then shipped to Italy for cutting and exported to the world for distribution. The term “Carrara marble” should mean that the marble was quarried from Italy’s Carrara region, not just that it was cut there. So, when you’re shopping, be sure you ask a lot of questions to confirm that you’re getting what you’re paying for.
Here at Bhandari Marble World, we have a very large selection of Italian marble in stock. Our experienced team of stone professionals can show you the differences between authentic Italian marble and other choices. And you can rely on us to always be forthcoming and specific about where your marble was quarried.
That being said, there are some other very beautiful marble choices from other areas. For example, did you know that the marble used to build the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. was made from gorgeous white marble quarried in Colorado (Calacatta Lincoln)? So, while the Italian variety is beautiful, strong, and luxurious, it’s not the “only” option.
