Another thing that fucks me up about Thancred & Ryne's relationship through most of shb is that Thancred KNOWS hes messing up he KNOWS hes making tons of mistakes with how he deals with Ryne. He knows full well but doesn't do anything about it. He knows he should reassure her but he doesn't, and he probably doesn't even think he can. Because he knows it won't be completely genuine (and Thancred doesn't even know how to be genuine to begin with) and Ryne is too smart to not see that. And because Ryne already has such a low view of herself she'd never accept his words even if they WERE genuine. Because she still knows that Minfilia means more to him than she does.
And Ryne knows that he's fucking up the entire time too. She knows that he's stressed and grieving but she also thinks she knows his feelings better than she does. Ryne assumes a lot about Thancred, she fills in the blanks between everything he doesn't say or do, but she always fills them in negatively. To her, the default is ALWAYS going to be people wishing she was someone she wasn't, because that's all she's ever know (Vauthry saw her as just "the Oracle" and Ran'jit saw her as just another "Minfilia"). She knows Thancred knows she's not Minfilia, but she thinks he wishes she was (and she's not really wrong, but it's not correct either).
And Thancred is scared to say anything, because he doesn't want to decided her life for her, because he knows Ryne's life is her's to do with as she pleases, but in doing so he inadvertly pushes her towards the option no one really wants. Minfilia doesn't want to come back at Ryne's expense, Ryne doesn't want to just be "Minfilia" for eternity, and Thancred doesn't really want to lose Ryne either.
It's only as the final decision is at hand that Thancred really shows that he DOES care about her as an individual person. It's only after Ryne has already decided to take her life into her own hands that she gets to understand, just a bit, of how he really feels.
#AND ALSO like. ryne probably decided to stick around with him after he saved her#both because she feels indebted to him#and also bc she knows that while his treatment isnt ideal#its also much better than anything else shes know#ranjit kept her locked up in a cage completely by herself with maybe some books to pass the time#and hes harsh and literally does not care for her opinions or needs or anything#shes there as a memento. a memory of all the minfilias he saw die. and as a threat in need of imprisonment#ranjit never cared to teach her anything or tell her stories#but thancred did#thancred taught her how to protect and provide for herself#he told her stories about his friends and their adventures#he let her play when time allowed#he let her just#be#whenever it was possible#she probably thought this was all bc he saw her as minfilia#but she was too excited to be able to do stuff to let that stop her#if shed be just 'minfilia reborn' anyway#why not be one that at least got to have fun sometimes?#the one that could hunt and swim and cook#im so Normal about them#thancred waters#ryne waters#minfilia warde#final fantasy 14#final fantasy xiv#ff14#ffxiv#xander rambles#xander being insane about ryne

if your characters are heavily traumatized there should at least be a little bit of slapstick involved tbh
#Agnieszka talking about the abuse she faced when being imprisoned by the government#while Nanaue rips off the head of some goon and a ridiculously huge fountain of blood comes out of the guy’s throat#and nobody acknowledges it

also what happens to Malon after she's arrested????? (does she, perhaps, find smth out about her deceased husband 👀)
- hero-of-the-wolf
@hero-of-the-wolf
...
Malon was tossed into a holding cell without a word, and without so much as the hope of a trial or lawyer or anything of the sort.
She heard a distant laugh as the door was slammed behind her, and exhaled wearily as she sat up, brushing some dried blood from her cheek as she moved. The trip here hadn’t been long, but it had been one unpleasant moment after another, harsh shoves and sneers and glee at her arrest, and even a shock she’d gotten when a guard’s hand had wandered and she’d punched him.
Add that to the bruises she’d gotten from the fight earlier with Warriors, and most of her body ached.
Malon closed her eyes, thinking of her husband’s brother. Warriors had stayed beside her as long as he could after she’d been arrested, a hand on her arm until he'd been called away and had to leave. Despite the fact that they’d had to feign indifference and hatred towards one another the whole time, Malon had found his presence comforting. She’d missed him, and he reminded her of Time, and better days.
She only wished she could have spoken to him more. It didn’t take superpowers for her to see that he was barely holding it together.
“...Hello?”
Malon stilled, and raised her head, looking around the tiny cell.
It was essentially a stone box, small with no windows, a toilet in the corner, and two somewhat-cushioned benches by the walls that Malon supposed were meant to be beds. A girl who must have just been asleep was sitting up on one of them, holding her arm tight to her chest as she looked warily at Malon.
The girl couldn’t have been older than Legend, though her face was worn in a similar way that made Malon’s heart pang. Her blonde hair was messy and was trying to hang in her face, but her indigo eyes were sharp in the artificial light, and watched Malon with a calculating look.
“Are you a super?” she asked bluntly, and Malon blinked, then smiled, easing up to her feet.
“Hello to you too. Yes I am, but with nothing that’ll get us out of here I’m afraid,” she answered, wincing as she walked over and sat on the opposite bench. “Is this room temporary? Or am I going to be here a while?”
“I don’t know. I’ve only been here for about a day,” the girl replied, holding her arm tighter to her chest. “And don’t worry about your powers being useful or not. They’re blocked in here.“
Malon hummed. “That’ll be hard to test, seeing as they’re animal related. But thank you for the warning.”
The girl nodded and messed with her hair, letting silence fall between them. Malon studied her again, trying to figure out if she really was the same age as Legend, and her heart ached at the reminder of her son. She hoped desperately that he and the boys had gotten away— by now they must be close to Sky’s, even if they were being cautious.
All of them except for Twilight.
A deeper pang of worry shot through her as she thought of her other son, and she bit her lip.
Oh Twi, please be okay...
Malon sucked in a slow breath, and gave the girl a gentle smile. “My name is Malon,” she said, in an effort to keep herself distracted from her worries. Being anxious about her family wouldn't make them any safer. “How about you?”
“...Zelda,” the girl said quietly, then shrugged. “Or Zel. Or Zellie. Or Fable.”
“Fable?”
Her mouth quirked up. “I know another Zelda, we did nicknames to make it easier. Somehow that was just what got picked. It’s what I tend to go by, honestly.”
Malon smiled. “I know how that goes. I have two sons named Link, and more Links beside that rarely go by their names. Long story,” she added at Fable’s confused look.
Fable sighed and leaned against the wall. “Well, I’ve got time.”
“I was hoping to use mine to somehow get out of here,” Malon said with a glance around, and Fable closed her eyes.
“You’re welcome to try, but I’ve had no luck. I’ve gotten food once while I’ve been here, and they threatened to shock me if I tried anything with the door open. Not that I could with this,” she huffed, gesturing to the arm she had cradled to her chest.
Malon looked closer, and realized that the arm was swollen and bruised, the skin an unpleasant mix of purples and bluish-greens.
“Are you okay?” Malon asked worriedly, and Fable shrugged one shoulder.
“It’s just a broken arm. It got hurt in the fight before they arrested me, and nobody’s done anything for it,” she said in a pointed voice at the doorway.
The door stayed silent.
Malon frowned, and carefully stood and approached Fable, sitting down beside her. “...May I?”
Fable hesitated, then slowly held out her arm, the limb shaking a bit. Malon took it with a gentle hand, and studied it, feeling cautiously along the skin. Fable winced, but Malon made sure to be careful, and after a couple minutes, was fairly sure that the break was near the middle of her forearm.
“It doesn’t seem like it’s too bad,” Malon said, gently releasing her arm. “It’s swollen, so maybe that’s why, but I couldn’t feel the actual break. It’ll set easily if it is one, but we should probably figure out a way to get a sling for you.”
Fable wrinkled her eyebrows at Malon like she couldn’t quite figure her out, but she nodded. And she didn’t try to stop Malon when she pulled off the apron she still had on (she wondered briefly what had ever happened to the bacon she’d been cooking), and worked on tying it around into a suitable sling.
“So... what happened to you?” Fable asked after a minute of Malon fiddling with fabric. “If you don't mind me asking. You said you're a super, but you're not even in uniform. What did you do to get thrown in here?”
“Me? Oh me and my family have been doing a lot under ol’ Dark’s nose for a while now, and everything finally caught up to us,” Malon sighed, figuring a true explanation would take too long. Wind and Four alone would probably make Fable think she was crazy. “They came after us at home after we tried to help somebody. My family that was at the house made it away, but my one son was on duty... I don’t know where he is.”
Malon breathed out a sigh she told herself wasn’t shaky, and cleared her throat.
“How about you? What did a nice girl like you do to get arrested?”
Fable blinked, and looked down at Malon's attempts to secure the sling, not speaking for a moment.
“I fought back,” she said after a long minute of silence. “I just— I just hit my limit. I couldn’t take it anymore, what they’re doing, how they treat us...”
Fable’s voice wobbled.
“My... father died. And I know it wasn’t by natural causes, I found proof, but I couldn’t do anything with it. It was an official who’d had him killed, and I knew I had to keep acting like everything was fine like I didn’t know and I just... I snapped. It didn’t end well. Obviously.”
She swallowed thickly, and Malon, finished with the sling, gave her a gentle look.
“I’m sorry hon, that must’ve been awful,” Malon said softly, and Fable pulled her legs up to her chest.
“I've definitely had better days. At least I got to toss a few people into the harbor,” she murmured, then swallowed and looked away. “Do you... think your family is okay?”
“I hope so,” Malon replied softly. “Twi... Twilight— he’s my oldest— he’s tough, and his powers enhance his senses, so he should be okay. My youngest can turn invisible, and he has somewhere safe to go, and friends with him. I’m worried about them all, but... I trust their skills. I think they’ll be okay.” They'd better be okay.
I don't think I can lose anybody else.
Malon took a deep breath, and looked over at Fable, giving her a smile.
“And I’m not planning on sitting around here and waiting for them to rescue me,” she said firmly, and squeezed Fable’s shoulder. "Or see what sort of sentence or punishment either of us is going to get. I'm gonna to do my best to escape. You wanna work together and bust out of here?"
Fable looked at her in surprise, and hesitated, eyes scanning across her face.
Then her eyes hardened with determination.
“Yes. I don't want to stick around and see what they're going to do to us either. I'm in," she said with a deep breath, and Malon took her uninjured hand in hers, and shook it.
"In that case, we'd better get to work," she smiled, and Fable returned it. "What can you do, hon?"
And as Fable explained her powers, already looking less pale and defeated then she had when Malon had first been tossed in, Malon felt the hope that had started to dim in her heart flicker back to life.
#sorry no Time mention... this time#downfall iau#ask to tag#fic#lu fable#lu malon#writing from the floor#am i capable of writing fics with Fable without imprisoning her somehow? so far nope lol#i'll make it up to you someday sweetie#I'm feeling gross about my writing and life in general but this was finished#and i debated up and down but i decided to just post it anyway#i can always edit it more later#not sure if i'm happy with fable's character#but this is also and au au au version of her while she's in pain and having the worst week of her life so i think i can excuse it a bit

behold: my least favorite string of words in the entirety of Tears of the Kingdom.
#totk critical#totk#tloz#gerudos#when will my brain return from the imprisoning war....#I just stumbled upon it again doing research yesterday and....#there's so many layers as to why it aggravates me#that it's spoken from the perspective of a masked woman as to embody all gerudos while removing her own identity#in the context of her loyalty to rauru as well#that giving birth to a bad man makes you responsible for his actions (he's not a toddler anymore he's an adult ok)#or more metaphorically that your initial conflict with hyrule makes you Sinful and cursed and you must Feel Bad Now *shame shame*#that she's passing on that ageless guilt with no expiration date onto the shoulders of *a teenager* and it's considered GOOD???#(wind waker shaking crying right now)#ALL OF THAT to prop her up to swear her loyalty to the people planning to go murder their ancient king (sure he's a Bad but still???)#using some sort of weird ass original sin scenario that is arguably not any gerudo's fault but Ganondorf's#(or if it is then it's not shown so ???)#the vibes are so so so off I just really !!!!! don't like#this is stuff like this that makes me reject that it's a good story about alliances being formed in good faith#because this is just manipulative#maybe the alliance angle everyone's stronger together was the intention but the execution is another story entirely#gerudos never benefited from ganondorf's actions also#so it's not even a case of making reparations for the way you benefit from systemic oppression due to your ancestor's actions#gerudos won literally nothing in ganondorf's war#apparently he even subjugated them if they weren't on his side (like.... a king would.... not to excuse it but the double standard here)#so it just instrumentalizes the ageless sin of motherhood + suffering under a bad monarch billion of years ago for war#so uhhh.... yeah that's not... that's pretty bad imo#the gerudo girl could have went “hey girl this man used us and still hurt us to this day let's kick his ass once and for all”#and this would have been a different story entirely#a little cheap but not.... My thoughts/head cannons on Velvet and Veneer
On Veneer: I personally believe that Veneer’s sympathy stems from his goldfish he used to have. Here’s how I think it went down. Veneer, like any other little kid, probably begged his parents for a pet dog or something but his parents thought that was too much responsibility so they gave him a fish instead. Veneer might have been bitter about this, because c’mon now, that’s a boring fish and Veneer probably wanted his pet to be more entertaining (referring to his pet monkey). So he might have halfheartedly taken care of it and slowly over time he might have even grown a small bond with it but again, Veneer is a little kid and I doubt he did any research on how to properly take care of a fish (the fish probably lived in a small glass bowl with no enrichment) and of course, the fish dies despite Veneer now giving it slightly more attention. This makes Veneer guilty of course but he moves on because in the end of the day, it’s just a fish. Then much later on Floyd comes along, not in a glass bowl but similar, and this time his new ‘pet’ can actually talk to him. I personally see it as Veneer viewing Floyd as something akin to an entertaining talking hamster or something or the sort. So forming a bond with Floyd becomes a lot easier than his fish. And then Floyd begins to lose his color (much like how fish do when close to dying) and that same guilt begins to creep up on him, because internally wether he realizes or not, he sees his goldfish in Floyd, leading to him eventually helping out Floyd.
Tldr: Veneer feels guilty about killing his pet goldfish so he makes up for it by helping Floyd.
On Velvet: People need to stop making her out to be this sadistic abusive monster. She’s literally just a bratty teen diva, and arguably, also suffering from addiction from not only the fame going to her head but also actual addiction lowkey. Like, I can’t be the only one that noticed how agitated and on edge she sounded before giving herself a few doses of essence and her voice immediately going soft and relaxed. Additionally, just because she’s the stronger voice out of the two twins doesn’t mean she’s abusive to Veneer, y’all need to chill with that. Speaking of loud voices, I’m also seeing the theory that Veneer actually has talent but acts like he doesn’t to keep his sister happy, and like, I get it, considering his speaking va and his singing va are the same and he doesn’t dose himself as much as Velvet, but I think that’s simply because he doesn’t NEED his voice to be as strong as Velvet’s, he’s just the backing vocals, so of course he’s not gonna dose himself as much as her. Lastly, Velvet is a good sister to Veneer and I say this on the basis that Velvet was happy to perform with her brother at all times. She could have done a solo career and hogged all the fame and glory for herself but she didn’t. The fact that Veneer actually sassed Velvet back in two scenes (“Our parents were dentists 🙄” “Why do I have to do it 🤨” tells me that he’s not afraid of to talk back to her like some of you are making him seem out to be). Velvet loves her brother obviously, but being famous, being remembered forever, that was her DREAM, not Veneer’s, so of course she went a little aggressive with it towards the end.
Tldr: Velvet is actually a good sister and a normal teen girl acting her age.
#Trolls 3#trolls band together#velvet and veneer#trolls velvet#trolls veneer#my thoughts#they love each other#but also angst between them is good too#what sister hasn’t called her brother an idiot once in her life 🙄#Let Velvet live a little jeez#At least she wasn’t the one to comment multiple times on how cute the trolls looked while imprisoned#“They’re kinda cute banging on the walls begging to go home - Veneer

Not Katakuri being happy the man who defeated him escaped successfully
That smileeeee
Also his reasoning behind hiding his mouth being to protect Brûlée and his siblings after she got hurt, and not just a result of bullying was so sweet
I have to imagine the Charlotte sibs were pretty close when it was only the first 10 or so
Brulee already knowing Katakuri isn’t some perfect noble brother who never lies down and knows he’s also the type of man to respect an opponent who could defeat him so soundly and be happy they got away shows that
#one piece#also we need to give that Flampe bitch a good smacking#the audacity of that girl for shading Katakuri that hard for no good reason#Brulee should imprison her in the mirror world for a while to think about what she’s done#manga#anime#whole cake island#Charlotte katakuri#Charlotte brûlée

DF: Hey so you guys know how once upon a time I had mentioned that I would be writing an LBD centric prequel to Blue and Violet in an author's note in one of the last chapters of Colours?
It's definitely still happening if some of you were waiting for it!!! It's just, I haven't been working on it lately (^~^;)ゞ. Actually, I've barely worked on it at all. Technically, I am more than a third way through writing it because it's only a three chaptered fic (well, that's the plan as of 'right now') and I have the outline of the whole thing pretty set in stone (aka, I know exactly what's going to happen).
The first chapter of it is... Actually, it's already done! Pretty terrible draft but not something some quick editing can't fix! But me being me, I don't particularly like to publish chapters unless I have some more chapters in the backlog to be published the following week (to uphold a consistent schedule). Hence, why I'm able to keep up the weekly update schedule!
However, I... Genuinely don't know how long it is going to take me to write the other two chapters. Because my brain is not good at multitasking. So, since my main focus is on Winter Mornings, Summer Nights (WMSN), this ask blog, and my life outside of the internet, it's hard to find time and energy to actually... Write the prequel I've been wanting to write for ages. A piece of work that I really wanted to share before WMSN came out because it's actually meant to be read after Colours (despite literally being a prequel. But it contains so many spoilers for the timeline beyond it because ITS LBD'S POV) but lmao it is what it is.
HOWEVER: If you are all willing to endure the very unreliable production of the prequel (it literally could take me months to dish out the second chapter), I could publish the first chapter for it! Just so you guys can like, I don't know, consume it.
Um, do bear in mind though, I might not end up following the results of this poll. Because I don't know, I'm a little silly I guess (or just incredibly unreliable lmao). But I will take the results from this into consideration! Ultimately, I will try to do what I feel like is best for you guys and the series (and my own sanity too I guess).
So, this is more of an update post than anything else. To tell you guys that I'm working on the thing, I swear XDDD!!! But if you guys really want to see some of it now, I am willing to share what I currently have :DDD.
#blue and violet#while I could be bold and say that technically everything before Colours is basically prequel stuff-#-because technically Colours is actually THE MAIN FIC- its where all the shit goes down and all the stuff I had been building up to#the LBD prequel predates the time period of TQFTSK#before she was imprisoned#because haha I really do want to explore her character more and give her more depth to who she is in the Blue and Violet story#I want to write her thoughts and feelings and her logic and OUGHHWBSOFBSIF I love her so much

Generally love how Apple White keeps going on about her happily ever after and how Raven is so important to it due to what Raven does and even says she needs her, but never once does she consider what Raven's ending will be, because guess then that means Apple's views on legacy and happily ever afters and who gets them would be shattered instantly.
#like i cant fully say if apple could see from where she stood on the stage while raven signed#but like ravens destiny literally showed apple evicting raven from the castle and being made homeless and then finally imprisoned#like apple really be expecting raven to sign to that shit#at least in books apple says our story and such with raven#webisobes her makes it all about her

Spent overnight in the ER with my grandma and since it was last minute all I had to wear was my dirty Shadowheart shirt I wore to a Halloween event the night before. And while we were in the waiting room this dorky-looking guy about my age sitting across from me glanced up from his Switch at one point, caught sight of said shirt and did like a real life pog face. Then nudged his gf and she did the same thing. Heartwarming: this miserable goth is bringing cheer to local emergency rooms
#my grandmother is ok…for the moment (she’s 96 so who knows)#she has dementia so as the night wore on she started freaking out that we were imprisoning her somewhere#she also told the doctor that all her daughters are dead while my mom was standing right next to her#then when my mom pointed that out she said ‘You’re my daughter?’#😔

"There's a bond that exists between mother and child --
Ah, but then again...how would you know?"
~"After All" from Ever After (musical)
x~x~x~x
Tristan Cromwell never knew his mother. She’d died bringing him into the world. Even so, he’d heard all about her from his father, Blaise, from the time he was very small. An objective witness of the young woman’s life, however, could’ve noted a few discrepancies.
“That’s Marianne. That’s your mother.” “That’s your mother there, on the right. She was the youngest in her family, same as you and me.”
Marianne Fudge-Cromwell was actually the second youngest. Her youngest brother Frederick is a Squib, living alone happily in Suffolk with a Saint Bernard named George.
“…I was sure to mention to your great-uncle Cornelius how much you've grown -- how much you resemble your mother…”
If one were to simply describe Tristan and Marianne, then they would think they looked very alike. They both had dark hair, slender builds, delicate features, and long-fingered hands. If Marianne’s uncle Cornelius Fudge had ever actually met Tristan, however, he wouldn’t have thought they resembled each other much at all — his youngest niece had never been as gaunt and pale as her son. However thin she may have been, Marianne had always had youthful chubbiness in her face, and however porcelain her skin may have been, her cheeks were always pink and sweet. She was also quite small at 5'6", while Tristan was tall and gangling. As an adult the boy even ended up an inch taller than his own father. On top of all this, the stiff, proud way Tristan held himself mirrored his father Blaise completely. Marianne had always been the sort to keep her shoulders and head down and generally make herself seem even smaller than she was.
“You’ll be staying inside where it’s safe. Now take your workbook and go sit in your mother’s armchair. She loved reading by that window; I daresay you will as well.”
Marianne placed her reading chair in that spot because the window neighbored her real favorite place at Cromwell Manor: the garden. Blaise had encouraged her to read indoors more while she was pregnant out of concern for her health, so this was the best way she could keep an eye on her white rose bushes while staying indoors.
“Of course your mother loved music. She had a beautiful singing voice…like a songbird in May. And she was proud of it — she would only ever share it with the most deserving. And she only ever sang duets with me.”
Marianne was so deathly shy that she only sang for people she felt comfortable with. The first time Blaise heard her sing, it was because he’d overheard her when she thought she was alone, tending to some flowers. On the flip side, Marianne was incredibly fond of Blaise’s voice, when they were first courting — she even in some letters rambled romantically about his heavenly Tenor serenades.
“You have no other ‘grandfather,’ son. Your mother’s parents passed when she was quite little — even younger than you.”
This is one of the few things Blaise told Tristan that is entirely true. Marianne and her sisters were largely passed around to various family members, including their uncle Cornelius and his wife, when they were not away at Hogwarts. Poor Frederick was shunted to the side, left mainly in the custody of their grandparents when outside of Muggle grade school and then kind of cut loose after graduating. Perhaps this is why Marianne was so desperate for some sort of stability and comfort…
“Your mother’s sisters grew…distant, after your mother’s death. They stopped coming to see you, not long after you were born. Quite frankly, I’d say you’re better off without them in your life.”
Emma and Elizabeth Fudge had never liked Blaise, even when their sister Marianne was most charmed by him. This was in part due to the age and therefore maturity difference between them and Marianne -- Elizabeth had been seven when Marianne was born, and Emma had already started at Hogwarts by the time their brother Frederick was born a year later. They stopped coming to see Tristan because it required them to make arrangements with Blaise ahead of time to come to the Cromwell Manor. And considering Blaise thought the two women would be a bad influence on his son, since they would inevitably try to “challenge his parenting,” he gave them almost no openings to come and visit. Eventually the two witches sadly gave up trying.
“There would be no point in me marrying again. Marianne was my other half and soulmate, and her final gift to me was you, my son and heir. I would not disgrace her memory by marrying a second time.”
Marianne married Blaise after just turning 18, while he was 37. Blaise had not married sooner because he’d been too picky about potential matches, so he'd only started actively searching after his father Charles finally put his foot down and demanded that Blaise marry and produce an heir. Blaise selected Marianne in large part because of her innocence, which made him want to “protect” her from the evils of the world and treat her like his own precious treasure to cherish and keep under lock and key. At first Marianne was enthralled by this, loving the idea of a wealthy man who would provide for her, care for her, and be completely loyal and devoted to her. Plus his dashing good looks was a plus. These favorable points of Blaise's soured in Marianne’s mind, though, after she became pregnant with Tristan right after her and Blaise's honeymoon.
"Your mother was in very poor health long before she gave birth to you. She stayed alive just long enough to make sure she saw your face, even if it was just the once."
Disregarding the usual childhood illnesses of Black Cat Flu and the like, Marianne's health had been fine prior to moving to the Cromwell estate. The decline really seemed to come about after her move and the suffocating isolation that ensued from it. She began to eat less, even while having to eat for two, and she often ate superficially, leaning more on salty, sugary things that could offer her some small bit of cheer, far more than anything that would give her any real strength. Over time the stress of dealing with Blaise's obsessive control and flashes of rage took its toll as well. Marianne's high blood pressure, when combined with her young age, was ultimately what helped contribute to the excessive bleeding that accompanied Tristan's birth and led to Marianne's death. However much Blaise may have seen how unhappy and unwell his wife was and however much he may have truly wanted to help, the only way he'd ever learned how to love someone else was through micromanagement and possessiveness. And so the more he tried to love Marianne, the more he only served to hurt her.
"Your mother was an angel long before she left us." "I will not hear you complain a moment longer. I never complained, when my father told me to stay at home, and your mother likewise minded me. She knew her duty to me and to this family, and so do you." “Your mother was a saint, Tristan. Don’t you dare let anyone ever insinuate otherwise.”
Oh, far from it. Marianne was a rather stupid and immature person, quite truthfully. She'd never had great marks at Hogwarts, not just because of her distinctly average magical talent, but because of her flightiness about studying and her tendency to tune out in class when her stuffy old professors didn't maintain her interest. She'd had little intellectual curiosity aside from superficial homely matters, such as maintaining a garden or embroidery. Her favorite aspect of Hogwarts weren't the spells or classes or group activities, but instead the way everything was cooked and cleaned for her, so she could focus on other (and, to her view, more important) things. She'd been rather lonely growing up, since her sisters had been so much older than her, so she never became versed in making friends or reading people overall. She was even a bit eccentric, giving all of her flowers names and talking to them the way many people would their pets. She'd named the Fanged Geranium in the Hufflepuff commonroom Audrey.
Most of all, though, Marianne was naive. She never could've predicted just how many strings would be attached to Blaise's love, nor how quickly they would tangle around her and leave her feeling helpless, isolated, and depressed in this place that should've been a home, but now felt more like a prison. She'd made excuses for Blaise to her family while they were courting with the thought that any of his rougher edges would smooth themselves out once they were married, but soon it became clear they never would. If she'd lived longer, it's not improbable that Marianne might've turned to the bottle or some other method of escaping her worries. Had she not been so trapped inside the Cromwell estate, perhaps she might've tried having an affair while her husband was out, just as something to cheer her up. Maybe that affair could've led her to another man who would've "rescued" her from this marriage she'd so hastily agreed to. Maybe she could've taken her son with her. Maybe she wouldn't have -- after all, Blaise and the rest of the Cromwells wouldn't have rested until they'd gotten him back. She didn't know how good of a mother she'd even be anyway -- maybe her son would be better off at least being provided for. Or maybe he'd be better off with some other family, living a normal, happy life somewhere else -- with one of her sisters, hell, maybe even her brother! Frederick had always been a natural with younger children. Honestly, it's doubtful Marianne had ever thought that far ahead, considering she'd given up any real hope of finding anything better.
Perhaps this is why Marianne didn't stay behind as a ghost, even after dying so young and tragically. If she hadn't gone on when she did, she would've been stuck haunting the prison that was Cromwell Manor for the remainder of her days. At least if she had to go...when she finally saw her son again, it would be in freedom.
"Fafa...did Mama love me too?" "Yes, my son. With all her heart, son."
The other rare thing Blaise told Tristan that was completely true.
#hphm#hogwarts mystery#my writing#fanfiction#tristan cromwell#marianne cromwell#blaise cromwell#marianne's character theme is 100% heart of stone from six the musical and that song did jumpstart me wanting to write this#but I ultimately picked this song to accompany this drabble because it felt more bittersweet#definitely want to try to draw something with these two at some point though#but yeah sadly marianne didn't live long enough for tristan to really 'take after her' that much#and he's kind of messed-up in his own ways -- I mean this is the kid that had a dog skeleton in his room named Funny Bone growing up#but at the same time blaise treated him like a bird in a cage much like how he treated marianne while she was alive#and so as much as he resembles blaise he at least silently knows that blaise's way of loving someone involves imprisonment#rather than trust and respect#that self-awareness really could help tristan break the cycle of abuse started by charles someday

#seeing people comparing dream’s relationship with hob to the one he has with lucienne. lmao. lmfao#lucienne and dream have been at each other’s sides for billions of years#lucienne has an access to and clarity with dream that is rivaled only by that of dream’s own siblings#she took care of the dreaming—the extension of dream’s being—while he was imprisoned#she’s the first person who touches him in over a hundred years and do you see the way dream held onto her?#the way he lights up when he looks at her?#the way he entrusts so much to her?#okay let’s say be generous and say hob and dream meets for two to three hours each century#that’s a maximum of 18 hours total they’ve spent with each other#that’s less than one *day*#hob doesn’t even know dream’s NAME.#the relationships dream has with hob and with lucienne are hardly comparable in my opinion#in my humble opinion#sunbreak screams about hob gadling
